I took the idea of a first day and gave it an interesting spin. In my fic (apologies in advance for length, I got a bit carried away) my OC Sabyne is returning to Dantooine for the first time in five years. If it seems a bit rough, it's because it's from her viewpoint. In her opinion, it's better to say what needs to be said than to be eloquent and hide details. Enjoy!!
(
EDIT
: I updated my fic, so I'm updating my thread.)
*****************
“Dantooine…” I tense as I hear Bastila say the name. It isn’t something I can help; anymore it’s more of a reflex. Every time I hear the name of the planet that is home to the Jedi Academy, I catch myself. I get
really
tense, however, when someone mentions Coruscant and the High Jedi Council.
“It seems a lifetime since I last set foot on her surface, though in reality it’s only been a few months…” At this point, I have to leave the
Ebon Hawk
’s cockpit, lest she hear me laughing. A few months?? Ha! It’s been nearly
five years
since I was last on Dantooine! Five years in which I was supposed to forget having any association with the Jedi. Five years of my life, permanently changed, all because the High Council did not believe me.
I look around the ship’s main hold, but I find that I’m alone. After our ordeal on Taris, the rest of my companions are probably resting. Sleep has been difficult for me these past months for whatever reason. Not since I was captured on Corellia, and held for interrogation by one Carth Onasi, have I dreaded sleep this much.
Hearing footsteps, I look up from where I stand. Sometimes I wonder if the Force allows me to see the future, as Carth walks by on his way to the men’s quarters. He gives me a confident grin, which I return with a salutatory nod and smile. “Going to get some rest?” I ask. The old discord we once shared has all but evaporated, leaving us with a mutual, if not slightly uneasy, respect for one another.
He nods. “Yeah. With what we all just went through, we all could use it. The ship’s on Autopilot, so we shouldn’t run into any trouble before reaching Dantooine.”
He looks around, as though searching for someone. “Have you seen Mission?” he asks.
I shake my head. “Not since we took off, though I imagine she’s taking Taris’ destruction harder than any of us.”
We share an understanding look. The Twi’lek girl had grown on both of us, and seeing her grieve for her home was difficult to take.
I take this instant to study Carth, my eyes taking in every detail of his face that they can. I remember how he had announced in our hideout in Taris’ Upper City that he would be watching both Raiyne and myself, that he didn’t trust us after how Admiral Karath betrayed him. As we talked about it later, Raiyne didn’t seem to mind Carth’s lack of trust, but I bristled over it. After all, I always believed that, when one’s part of a team, you have to learn to trust the others, regardless of past circumstances or issues. I guess I still have a lot to learn about working with others if I’m
that
naïve.
I must be staring at him too intently, for he clears his throat. “Are…are you all right, Sabyne?” he asks.
I quickly gather my thoughts and nod. “Yes…yes I am.” I say. “I was just lost in thought, as always.” I flash a smile that is supposed to be reassuring. At least, I hope it is. “I should let you get some rest. Sleep well, Carth”
He shoots me another handsome smile in return. He certainly knows how to turn on the charm when it befits him. “All right. Sleep well yourself, beautiful.” He replies before disappearing around the corner leading to the men’s barracks.
Beautiful
. Whether he means it or not, I like the way it sounds. I may not be particularly feminine, but somehow a compliment like that is enough to shake me somewhat. I guess I’m not too different from Tierslae after all. Being a diplomat, my sister is used to the fawning and flattery bestowed upon her by men who seek her influence. Yet she knows it’s nothing more than a game to them, that their words are meant to charm and claim, not to promise.
Bastila walks by on her way to the women’s quarters, and though I pretend not to see her, I can feel the scathing heat of the glance she sends me. I have never been particularly fond of her; have always thought that, for a Jedi, she was too proud of her “abilities”. She may excel in Battle Meditation, but that fails to make up for her lacking in other areas of training.
She likes me even less for always besting her in lightsaber training. I still smile at the memory of our last saber duel, remembering how I bested her double-bladed saber with my one single blade, though I did not wholly escape unscathed. I touch the spot just in front of my right ear where her saber had nicked me. Though not a bad wound, the blood that trickled from it made it seem like I was bleeding to death. The scowl she wore when Master Zhar declared me the victor warned me she would not forget such humiliation. I returned it with a glare of my own, telling her that she had best hone her lightsaber skills, as her Battle Meditation would not aid her in defeating me.
I think I hear her say something to me, but when I look up again, she has already gone. I shrug. No harm, no worry.
I sit in one of the seats in the main hold of the ship. So many memories of Dantooine. Too many, in fact. I remember how happy I was training to be a Jedi. I took everything I had and threw it into making myself a better person, and in turn, a better Jedi. Even stodgy Master Vrook was grudgingly pleased with me. He was the one who introduced me to Revan. Revan was a decent guy, a couple years older than me, yet he never acted self-important the way many Padawans did. I was proud to call him a friend. He in turn introduced me to Malak, a tall, quiet young man with eyes as gray as the skies of Leria Kerlsil during the rainy season. His gaze was often so intent as to make me uneasy, but I tolerated his presence.
Then, the Mandalorians attacked. I heard whispers in the Academy halls that the Jedi Council forbade any Jedi from aiding the Republic. I could tell Revan was not happy.
“The Republic is in danger, and those old fools would have us sit on our hands and do nothing while the Mandalorians destroy it!” he would rail to me.
Then came that fateful day. I was meditating by the river near the Grove when Revan approached. He wore his usual calm expression, but I sensed a difference in his demeanor. Everything about him, even down to how he walked, seemed to convey some newfound power.
I patted the grass next to me, and he obliged, sitting with his legs crossed. “I have good news, Sabyne.” He said in his usual calm tone. “Malak and I will be joining the Republic to drive away the Mandalorians.”
I was so surprised at his statement I could only stare at him. As far as I could tell, I wasn’t so sure it was good news. Join the war? After the Council forbade it? Hearing this did not prepare me for what he would ask next.
“Join with us, Sabyne.” He said, shifting to his knees so he was eye-level with me. “Come with and help cleanse the galaxy of the Mandalorian scourge. So many others are rallying to our cause. Come, and help save the Republic!”
I tried not to tense at his words. I may not be a full-blooded Mandalorian, but hearing the cruel words he directed at them hurt for some reason.
I raised my chin. “Even after the Council forbade us from getting involved, you still choose to fight?” I asked, my voice cold. “Have you learned nothing of what it means to be a Jedi, Revan?”
“But…but we could save the Republic…” He started to say, but I cut him off.
“Is the Republic in such dire straits that it must require the assistance of the Jedi?” I asked, raising an eyebrow questioningly. “The Council gave us an order not to interfere in this fight, and we were instructed not to violate it.”
“But…”
I shook my head. “The Council must have a valid reason for not permitting us to join. Why else would they have forbidden it? Remember your training, Revan. Remember not to give in to your emotions; for no matter how much you desire to help, giving in can only lead to the sort of passions that can lead to the Dark Side.”
He turned away abruptly, brushing loose grass blades from his pants as he stood up. “I see I was wasting my time to think you would join us.” He said stiffly. “And I thought you would understand better.” Turning his back on me, he left as quickly as he had come.
I couldn’t help but sigh. It was not the kind of goodbye I was expecting from such a good friend.
After Revan and Malak had left, I thought nothing more of our conversation until three months later, when I was approached by two Padawans.
“Sabyne. Master Vrook wishes to speak with you.”
Had I known what was going to happen, I would have better prepared myself. He told me the High Council had heard accusations that I was a spy for the Dark Side. After that point, I was too shocked to remember the rest of his words until he mentioned “expulsion”.
“I…I’m sorry?” I asked hesitantly.
“I said the Council is recommending expelling you based upon these charges.” Came Master Vrook’s cold response. It seemed even he believed what he heard. “I will travel with you to Coruscant to answer these charges. If you are found guilty, you will be forced to surrender your lightsaber and you will not be permitted to return to this Academy…”
*****
I feel someone shaking my shoulder. Realizing I must have fallen asleep, I awaken to see Bastila standing over me. “I have spoken to the Council. They request an audience with you.” She said.
“All right, what’s going on, Bastila?” Carth demands. “First Raiyne, now Sabyne. What’s with the secrets? Why do they want to see
her
now?”
“I’m afraid this is something she will have to tell you.” Bastila replied. “I am not in a position to tell you.”
I stand and stretch, wiping sleep from my eyes. “Once I know what they want, I’ll fill you in, Carth.” I tell him. Though he still looks unhappy, he nods his understanding.
*****
As I walk toward the Council chambers, I remember my trial at the Jedi Temple, if it can even be called a ‘trial’. It seemed more like an inquisition, with several of the highest-ranking Masters urging me to confess to my crimes, though I had not committed them. It seemed as though they would show mercy -possibly even acquit me- if I confessed, even if my confession were false. In the end, I refused their bait, and was subsequently found guilty.
I smile an ironic smile. It is ironic because the guilty verdict was not unanimous. I never did find out who voted for my guilt and who voted for my innocence, but I sensed that several of the Council members did not believe I could be a Sith.
I remember precious little of what happened after I left the Temple. Master Vrook himself kept a slight distance between us as we left the High Council, as though he believed any perceived Dark Side taint might infect him merely by touching me. Even though I was trapped in a shocked daze, I hazily remember him walking me to the entrance of the Temple, stopping only long enough to take my saber before reentering the building, leaving me standing alone outside. Night had begun to fall, and I remember shivering as I stood in the chilly air, totally shocked by what had just taken place.
It’s only a memory, yes. But it’s still one that causes tears to come to my eyes. I had witnessed cruelty, but had never been subjected to it like that. Being a Jedi had been my life, and it was taken away from me with little more than a flick of the wrist and a silent exit. Were I any weaker, I might have cracked under the weight of the sorrow that filled me.
But now isn’t the time to revisit sad memories. I have reached the door to the Council. I reach out my hand and slowly open the door; all the while steeling myself against whatever revelations had remained secret all these years.
*****
I walk into the Council chambers, hearing the door close behind me.
“Ah, you are finally here, Sabyne.” I smile a bit as I hear Master Zhar’s friendly voice.
I stand before the Council members: Masters Zhar, Vandar, Vrook, and Dorak. “Masters.” I say respectfully, nodding a brief greeting. I lock gazes with Master Vrook, who looks away before speaking.
“I must say,” he begins. “It is next to impossible to find you when you desire not to be found. Am I correct?”
“Yes, Master Vrook.” I reply. “I felt the Council had no need to find me…”
“No need?” Vrook sounds incredulous. “Had we no need, we would not have searched for you for four years!”
Now
this
I am not expecting. Why in the name of the Force would the Council be seeking an exiled Jedi? Was it to apologize? Or to punish me further?
Seeing my confused expression, Vandar explains. “Shortly after you were expelled from the Order, several members of the High Council were replaced due to charges of corruption. They were accused of being bribed by key Senators on Coruscant in exchange for supporting the Jedi involvement with the Mandalorian War.”
I feel my eyes widen in shock. “Jedi Masters? Falling to such a simple form of corruption?” I ask. “It’s difficult to believe.”
Master Dorak nods. “Indeed. It appears those involved began to believe that the Jedi should aid in the Wars, and they felt any who did not share their opinion should be dealt with harshly. It is a travesty that you were one to face the brunt of their converted fanaticism.”
I take a deep breath, willing myself to remain calm. “What made them target me?” I ask before realization dawns on me. The rumors and accusations that led to my expulsion may not have been started by those Council members, but I feel they perpetuated them, hoping they could influence the rest of the Council by allowing the rumors to continue unchecked.
Master Dorak shakes his head regrettably before resuming. “When the new Council was in place, I personally appealed your case to them. After hearing of the dubious nature of the accusations, they unanimously agreed to reinstate you into the Order.” He hands me a small bundle wrapped in silver cloth. I feel a sense of elation as I unwrap it and hold my lightsaber in my hands once again, its weight familiar in my hands as though I had never lost it.
“Welcome back, Sabyne.” Master Zhar says. “Or should I say, welcome back
Padawan
Sabyne.”
I look up at the Council, my eyes widened noticeably in my surprise. “I…I am honored, Masters.” I whisper. “Honored to be back amongst your ranks.”
