Welcome, my poor readers.
Title
: Epistles to a Master
Author(s)
: ithesock/Princess_Arulmozhi
Timeframe
: JA - but very AU. Obi-Wan is six years old. And Xanatos - isn't evil. Not much, anyway. And Council-Members can take padawans. Yep.
Characters
: Qui-Gon Jinn, Xanatos DeCrion, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Genre
: Er...Nonsense?
Summary
: A series of letters between a master and two padawans.
Notes
: Another fit of madness. I've always wanted to do a 'letter series
- so here you are. Also, I wanted a break from angst. And I wanted to write Xanatos, all deliciously suave. 'DeCrion' - the name - belongs to obi_ew, I think.
Here goes nothing...

***********************BEGIN ENCRYPTED MESSAGE****************************
Qui-Gon,
This is to tell you that we’ve reached P’abar safely—though I cannot help mentioning that the Class III accommodations on board the
CRS Arriedne
were pathetic. Star-Cruisers these days have degenerated into nothing—despite my best efforts to steer them towards something approaching dignity. However, I am a Jedi Knight and will learn to bear my miseries with equanimity. The Ambassadors welcomed us, and thankfully, seem to have a better idea of comfort than Star-cruiser captains. Possibly, they are overwhelmed by memories of my excellent manners and gift for mediation, and are supremely thankful for having nudged them into peace and prosperity. Either way, I am now marginally more comfortable. I truly wish you could have shared this little mission with us. It would have made an excellent break from your usual musty duties. Not to mention broadening your perceptions regarding the fine line that divides creature comforts and luxury.
I trust you’re now feeling better than your remarkably cheery self when we left, two days ago.
Nothing more to add, except that preparations are underway for a magnificent feast two floors below, in our honour. The Royal Guards are already upon us. Therefore, I end this missive…
Your former padawan,
Now noble and outstanding Knight,
Xanatos De Crion.
Message-Addition1
: Your young padawan is doing well too, I might add. A quiet one. How he ever came to be your apprentice is something that passes my comprehension. A case of ‘
opposites-attract
’?
Message-Addition 2
: Strange name, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Plebeian, I might add. Parents these days are remarkably devoid of aesthetic sense. My own name now, is an excellent example of class combined with aristocratic grace…
The Guards call. Will await your reply—if you’re strong to give one, that is.

********************BEGIN ENCRYPTED MESSAGE********************
My former padawan,
I direct your way-ward attention to the date and time of my message to you, calling your notice to the fact that I am
a.
Not quite so degenerate in body as you would wish to assume
b.
Not in such a foul mood that I would refuse to answer your
solicitous
message (note the emphasis).
c.
Not so pre-occupied with my illness that I would forget about my apprentice. The poison entered my system, to be sure—but I may point out to you that the Temple Healers are a remarkably talented team…and my constitution, as they say, is legendary. It would take more than a tube full of irritating
Elnaria tebula
to send me into the Force.
Having said that…I am glad that you received a warm welcome at P’abar—an event which, if my memory isn’t too faulty, may have a great deal to do with my frequent missions to that system, with you in tow—they are, in all probability, treating you as my representative, so to speak. Give my regards to Ambassador Ma’kaar, his wife, and three children (two are girls, and the third is a boy.). Also enquire if the Harvest was a good one, as he informed me a few months ago that there had been a catastrophe regarding the
wheit
crop in his sector. I promised him that I would send a delegation of Agri-Corp Workers to see to it.
I will make no mention of degenerate Star-Cruisers, as I am all too aware that you probably performed the rest of your long journey to P’abar by means of one of your star-ships belonging to Offworld—a habit, it seems, that I haven’t been able to break you out of. A fact that you’ve rather conveniently neglected to mention.
A Jedi craves not luxury, my young apprentice. The Council will not take very kindly to such use of family possessions, I might add.
I’m glad that Obi-Wan is quiet and well-behaved—and I will pass over your obvious, and unnecessary contempt of it. He is what a Jedi padawan should be—calm, well-trained, and obedient to his elders. Even you, it appears. I am proud of him.
I’m not certain, however, that you’ve gauged him very well. Two days are not enough to take the measure of any person. Your perceptions might need some…calibration, I think.
However, I would like you to remember that despite his status, he is merely six years old, and needs some care. He recovered from a rather severe attack of Chalactan fever two months ago, and I am still concerned about its after-effects—although the Healers have assured me that he has made a full recovery. Make sure that he is given the full course of nutrients I have included along with my instruction to you—and that he does not exert himself too much. Remember that I consented to his leaving with you only because the mission in question is a very routine one—at the first sign of anything untoward, you are to send him back to Coruscant.
I hope I have made this very clear.
Message Addition1
: Senior Padawan Ar’ghian wishes to thank you for having corrected his sabre-techniques. I told him that I would convey his message—I also told him that I would think better of you if you would not take advantage of other padawans to impress upon me forcibly, that you are capable of helping others out.
Message Addition2
: Junior Padawan S’enetta appears to be—ah—smitten by your…charms. I have taken steps to clear her mind of such fancies. You will not mind, I’m sure.
Ever your
Master
,
Qui-Gon Jinn.

Dere Massster,

Night Xantos seys you have the conzutasion of a rankor, but Im still wurried. i hope the vommitting has stopped. Yu looked veri sick. Plese writt to me that yu are alrite.
P’abar is a small but flourishing planet, one of four planets that make up the Se’ecuran System, situated in the Inner Core of the Galaxy. P’abar enjoys a salubrious climate, and is well-known for its rich deposits of Bronzium and Zindium, both used in large quantities across the Galaxy. Because of this, and its geographical location, the Trade federation took great interest in its commerce, and in the year 18097, a treaty was signed
Tat is all I cud find about P’abar Mastter. Yu told me to lern about new plnets ansd systems, and I am lerning. Nite Xantos is teaching me many new tings. He taugt me to dizzmantel service-droids yexterday. The serviz droid tripped over Ambazedor Ma’kaar. Ambazedor Ma’kaar fell on his Nose. Tere was juice evrwhere.

I loved it so far. The sniping and subtle jabs of those two were wonderful, showing that they have enough affection for each other that they are comfortable with the comments. It is rather sweet that Xan took Obi-Wan with him on the mission while Qui-Gon is recovering. I can imagine what kind of training he is doing with a 6 year old.
Qui-Gon on the Council, I don't think the Jedi will ever recover.
Oh, the speeling of ur yong Obi is perft.

Oh, this is really wonderful! I love the dynamics between the three. Qui concerned for Obi and Obi concerned for Qui, and Xanatos sniffing at them both. Obi-Wan's message was so cute! I like this a lot. Can't wait to read more!

Master!
This is wonderful! So cute!
I love it Master!
Not to mention, that I really like your Xani. He's all not evil and really kinda cool.
Qui-Gon was sick? And it's just like Obi to be so caring... even if his spelling does need some work! But he's all little and uber cute, so we can forgive him that!
~smiles~
Another master piece in the making Master, and I really simply can't wait for more!
Please please please more soon please Master!

Princess Arulmozhi,
that was a wonderfully funny post.
I nearly missed reading it because I forgot that
ithesock
is your sock. But the word "epistles" caught my attention, and I'm very glad that it did.
I had to look up the word "plebeian" afterwards (and refer back to the dictionary for it's spelling right now).
6 years old!! On a mission? No wonder Qui is so full of instructions to Xan. And I liked how he had more instructions for Xan about how to behave:
Also enquire if the Harvest was a good one....
, and his explanation that:
(two are girls, and the third is a boy.)
I loved the second message from 'Xanatos'. My first thought was that Xan was drunk and so he lost the ability to spell. And the excerpt about the planet that Obi included threw me. I thought that Xan had taken over the message.
I look forward to more.

Qui-Gon,
You are your usual morose self, I hope.
As you are doubtless aware by now, I allowed your little padawan access to my—ah—
message
account. (Although I must admit that the possibilities of a ‘massage’ account are infinitely pleasing, even if slightly inappropriate. I must inquire further into it…). I must also initiate him into the facilities offered by message accounts regarding writing skills—but more of that later.
Since your irrepressible apprentice has seen fit to inform you what I mentioned about your constitution, I may as well tell you that I meant it as a compliment. Rancors are ferocious beasts, if remarkably infuriating…but I digress.
I have no intention of enquiring about Ambassador Ma’kaar’s crop-harvest whatsoever—I am a Jedi Knight, not a protocol droid that is fluent in six million languages, with an irritating accent, to boot. I write this, because your esteemed friend needed no gently worded questions from me—he took it upon himself to talk my ear off about P’abar’s climate, mineral deposits, ores, platforms, workers, mines and everything else that would suit the taste of Master Yoda, probably. (I know that you revere the Green
grelbe
, but I do
not
.) Thank you kindly for taking the time to inform me that if two of the Ambassador’s children were girls, the other
must
be a boy. How
very
illuminating. Had you not seen fit to inform me of such a possibility, I doubt that I would have known it.
I will have you know, however, that he has had no word from the Agri-Corps division (I’m rather inclined to be relieved at this: the Agri-Corps Workers sustain enough boredom as it is; Ambazed—er—Ambassador Ma’kaar might reduce them to an exhausted puddle.)
I am not cut out for prim and proper negotiation procedures, I think.
I sometimes wonder how they tolerate your larger-than-life presence in that exalted Council of theirs. Do they see fit to argue with your every statement (I do not ask, you will notice, if
you
argue with
them
—that is a given), or does Master Windu glare at you with one of his Dark Side looks?
I still have some difficulty believing that you were asked to be one of
them
. Had I not seen your woebegone face last week, I would have discredited the story altogether. Plainly—and not for the first time—the Council was out of its wits.
That, in case your sense of humour (it is doubtful if you do possess one, as I never saw any evidence of it during my apprenticeship years) has departed for the unknowns, was intended as a joke. Jokes induce laughter in humans. Supposedly.
Has the green
grelbe
given up on its gimer stick, or are padawans still afflicted with broken shin-bones? If I still retain much of my grace, poise and style, it is a mercy of the Telosian Goddess of Beauty and the super-excellent Crion genes—nothing to do with
that one’s
disciplining methods.
I shall abolish gimer sticks when I ascend to the Council. They are lethal weapons and have no place in the Order.
I begin to think that the epithet ‘Quiet One’, would not really apply to the remarkably unquiet Kenobi. Today I have been asked, and made to answer the following questions:
1.
Why are planets round? (
Square planets aren’t easy to navigate
.)
2.
Are there angels in the moons of Iego? (
There’re angels everywhere, little one
…)
3.
What are angels? (
Outrageously flirting Royal Maidens
.)
4.
How do ships fly (
He should have gone to the Engineering Corps
.)
5.
Why is my light-sabre blue? (
Well, that one was rather easy
.)
6.
Why is it hot when you try to touch an
ascdelyne
torch? (
What? Where
?)
7.
Why is Ambassador Ma’kaar’s blood yellow? (
Perhaps I shouldn’t have mentioned that one.
)
8.
Unmentionable Question.
9.
Could not understand, as the whelp was half-asleep.
10.
Something about green-soups, I believe. Was he visiting the ship’s galley? Or has he been treated to Yoda’s infamous creations?
11.
Fell asleep, so heard nothing.
Why you must needs choose a whelp barely six years old—and much too curious for his own, or anyone else’s good—is beyond me. You chose me when I was
eleven
. Surely I was much more talented, graceful and intelligent than
him
?
A slightly disgruntled, but nevertheless magnificent
Xanatos DeCrion.
Message Addition1
: I make no mention of Service Droids and Ambassadors with broken noses. Accidents will occur, and are—as awful as it is to admit—even beyond my enormous powers.
Message Addition2
: Could not procure the
Geractrixa
nutrient that you had indicated—fed the whelp some
fracticenium
, instead. Ship’s healer assured me that there would no be side-effects.

Xanatos,
As I am feeling reasonably sure that you have been afflicted with this disease—have been afflicted with it for years, if I must confess the truth—I now ask you to examine yourself deeply, and find some way to treat yourself of this terrible illness. Its symptoms, from what I gleaned, are as follows:
1.
An irritating tendency to describe oneself in superlatives.
2.
Equally irritating tendency to look down on fellow-beings.
3.
Far too attentive to self’s opinions, as against others’.
4.
Unwillingness to submit to orders
5.
Impossible to live with, in general.
6.
Assumes intelligence equal to that of Council members when there is evidence of none.
7.
Considers accented protocol droids fluent in six million languages beneath his notice (although I’m inclined to concur with you in this respect—but I’m a Council-Member.)
8.
Is commonly referred to by his master, as ‘
that brat’
.
I’m quite certain that almost all of the above symptoms have exhibited themselves in you, at one time or the other. My sadly afflicted former padawan, I must ask you to see a healer at once, and do what you will to cure yourself. And thereby let my mind rest in peace.
Your unconcern regarding my health gratifies me. I am recovering—if not too speedily—at a reasonable pace. There was brief confusion for a while, in which it was suspected that the tube-full of poison was not, in fact, poison—but one of Master Yoda’s swamp stews. This was corrected soon—as Healer Alcar agrees with me that Master Yoda’s stew would have killed me at once, rather than leave me room for recovery.
Master Windu’s Vapaad glares are powerless against me—even while arguing about re-opening the ‘No Attachment’ Issue. I am not allowed to reveal much about Council Discussions, however—therefore, I will explain it in more detail in another message.
Regarding your flattering conviction that the Council must have been witless to appoint me as one of their own—I am rather inclined to view it in the opposite manner.
Your ascent to the exalted Council, however, will truly indicate symptoms of madness.
As to why I chose Obi-Wan at this ridiculously young age, when many of his clan-mates are still building blocks using the Force in the Crèche…I have my reasons.
Reason one, obviously, is that he is remarkably strong in the Force—a gleaming beacon of brightness among others his own age. His abilities and aptitudes are already showing signs of exceeding what is normal. Even during your apprenticeship, I began to feel that beginning apprenticeship at a much younger age than what is the norm now is beneficial—the master-padawan bond is that much stronger; trust and obedience are established that much sooner. Individual attention can work wonders. I have begun discussing re-consideration of the cut-off age for initiates to be sent to the Agri-Corps as well.
As for Obi-Wan…I felt a bond with him—a Force-willed bond, if you will. I cannot say why or how this happened…the fact remains that it exists. It was a simple matter to complete the connection. The Living Force urged me to do so, and I have not regretted it since.
There is another reason…but of this, later.
Patience is a lesson you are yet to learn in full, my haughty apprentice. Your padawan brother will teach you very well, I think. Do not take this as a Force-sent opportunity to scorch him with
Ascdelyne
torches, however—or I will be very seriously displeased. (Keep them out of his reach—he has a liking for ‘bright things’.)
Angels do not exist. Not one has come to deliver me from the travails of arrogant former padawans—therefore I refuse to believe in them.
I don’t want to know about how you came by the knowledge of Ambassador Ma’kaar’s blood-colour. What I don’t know, will not hurt me. Please make sure, however, that you teach Obi-Wan about Service-droids without injuring sentient beings. This is neither the time nor place for Inter-Galactic Incidents Due To A Broken Nose.
Still
your Master,
Qui-Gon Jinn.
Message Addition1
: Xani, don’t—I repeat,
don’t

My dear padawan,
I am pleased to hear that you are enjoying your stay with Knight Xanatos. I am much better now, little one, and my stomach no longer ‘rumbles’. Do not be afraid. Remember that worry, fear and anger lead us away from the Light.
I am also happy to know that you are learning about new planets. Ask Knight Xanatos about anything you wish to know—but after he finishes talking with the Ambassador, and not during his talks. You must observe, and listen to him. That is the best way to learn. I hope, also, that you have been meditating every day.
Do not, I repeat, do not touch
ascdelyne
torches. You will get burnt, if you handle it without proper guidance.
Angels do exist, little one. Every kind thought, every act of mercy is the work of an angel. They may have different names—but their spirit is one. Always believe in them.
Do not eat green soups—you know that they upset you. While I will not ask you to swallow medicines all the time, you must be careful about what you eat. Your health is very important.
Write to me more—your messages are a delight to me.
Your Master,
Qui-Gon.
Message Addition1
: Initiates Bant and Garen wish to ask after you. Initiate Reeft was eating a large grey flat-cake when I last saw him—so I do not know.

RE: Epistles to a Master (JA, AU, Qui/Xanatos/Obi) - *2nd Update*
I loved this. Qui-Gon and Xani exchanging snipes at each other, I can just hear Xan's thoughts dripping with distain as he types in his message but also with affection for his crazed former Master. And Qui-Gon, I can just see him causing the Council no end of problems.
He admonishments about Xan's lack of inquiry after his health was classic. Qui-Gon's message to Obi-Wan was so wonderful - his tone would match that appropriate for a 6 year old's eyes. Encouraging him to ask Xan questions was hilarious - devious Qui!
The speeling continues to delight. I think you've gotten it down perfectly.
Great job. Am now curious as to what other reason Qui-Gon picked Obi as his Padawan. You put that in a single sentence - usually that means it's important????

RE: Epistles to a Master (JA, AU, Qui/Xanatos/Obi) - *2nd Update*
Ah, this cheered me up quite nicely this morning. I needed to smile.
I don't know much about Xanatos's character (having not read any JA books), but I love the dynamic relationship between him and Qui-Gon. Their messages reveal so much about themselves and about how they feel about each other. Excellent job.
I've always thought that writing a story based entirely on correspondence would be quite a challenge -- you present it wonderfully. I am in awe.
I gaf my claok to a babi drakon. Im sorri, but it was cOld. May I haf anoter? The babi was called ‘BOga.’
My favorite part. It's just too darn cute!
Can't wait for more!

Oh
fantastic
story so far! You have six year olds down perfectly. I love how Obi's "missage" is so ...um... disjointed-to him it probably seems to flow quite naturally but to any adult--oh what a precious message! *Snort* Out of the mouths of babes... Xanatos you had better watch what you do/say in front of Obi because it will eventually get back to Qui-Gon...
I love this!
