With the split of the boards, I really have no more excuses to wait to post this. I'm going to get the rewrite up before I start with the sequel. If you read it the first time, read it again. Lots of things have changed, lots of things have been added, and (in my opinion anyway) v2 is just
better
all around.
The first rays of dawn penetrated the window, lightening the room. Jag opened his eyes and turned his head slightly to watch Jaina. She was snuggled under the comfortable blankets, pressed up against his body, her chest rising and falling with her regular breathing. He gently played with her hair.
Jaina stirred, opening her eyes and shifting her position to look up at him. "Good morning," she mumbled, still half asleep
"Good morning," he replied, kissing the top of her head.
"This is nice," she said. "I like waking up with you."
"It's a good way to start the day," Jag agreed.
A loud, piercing alarm suddenly blared through the speakers over the head. Jaina broke away from Jag, and they began pulling on clothing and boots, picking up their helmets and running for the hanger.
Jaina streaked up into the atmosphere, staying tight near Jag's clawcraft, surveying the battle raging over her head.
"Looks like this was more than a drill," Jag said. "You sure you're up for this?" Jaina ignored him, choosing instead to hail the rest of the squadron.
"Hey, Twin Suns! It looks like you mortals could use some divine intervention." She punctuated the remark by cleanly shooting a skip off Kyp's back.
Jag settled in just ahead of Kyp and Jaina's side by side X-wings. Their shield trio charged a half-dozen coralskippers, picking them off with the Force-linked firing Kyp and Jaina had been practicing. Maybe the Vong were starting to expect that, because these skips were doing a pretty good job of evading the shots. Jaina gritted her teeth as a plasma burst came too close for comfort. She jerked out of the way, then circled back to hit the skip that had just been shooting at her. It disappeared it a ball of fire before she could hit the trigger.
"Thanks, Jag."
"Be careful," he replied. "They want you, remember? Why do you think so many of them are coming after just the three of us?"
A new burst of skips came at them then, as if to accent his warning. It seemed like a whole squadron had been launched in their direction. Kyp and Jag immediately got to work, placing Jaina between them. As the plasma shots kept coming, Kyp instinctively pulled Jaina into a Force link, leaving Jag on his own to predict the actions of both his enemies and his wingmates. And he did an impressive job of it, at first. Soon it was just too much to handle. Though all three of the Twin Suns leaders gave a valiant effort, the skips kept coming. It seemed like there were two ready for every one they shot down. The dovin basels sucked in the majority of their shots, and the defensive screen had them pretty well blocked in.
Kyp saw Jag's clawcraft cut in front of Jaina's X-wing, it's already overtaxed shields failing under the barrage of hits designed to disable the other flier. Without shields and without the Force, Jag still managed to knock out an impressive number of enemy fighters. Jaina took out a few of her own, but for the most part she stayed on the inside of the clawcraft's defensive maneuvers. Obviously Jag had reminded her that the survival of the galaxy was pretty much riding on her ability to stay out of Vong hands.
Jaina tore away from Kyp's X-wing and headed toward Jag's clawcraft, hoping to clear away some of the skips on it's tail. She aimed, fired... one down. She shifted, aimed at the other, fired at it, but not before it got a good lock on the already damaged clawcraft. The plasma chewed through it's engine plating, setting off a brilliant explosion. Jaina felt Jag's life disappear in an explosion in the Force, one that seemed just as sudden, bright, and final.
To Kyp, it seemed like slow motion when the plasma ate through the relatively thin layer of metal protecting the clawcraft's engine. The next shot hit the engine itself, igniting it and consuming the ship in a matter of seconds. He was close enough to feel the explosion, and the incredibly different explosion in the Force that was now all too familiar. Jaina's immediate reaction nearly sent him spiraling out of control. The cold wave of shock, fear, anger, and the horribly empty void of grief washed over him.

Kyp regained his composure as Jaina realized what she was doing and put up a wall around her feelings. She accelerated toward the incoming skips, sending violent bursts of quad-linked fire in efficient, killing blows. Kyp followed her, then flipped his com to their private channel. He might not be able to feel her directly, but he was pretty sure he knew what was driving her sudden attack.
"I think we should go back to base," he told her. "You're in no condition to fly."
"I can fly just fine!" Jaina replied, sending another shot toward the Vong fleet.
"The hell you can!" Kyp retorted. "You are very emotionally messed up right now."
"So are you!" she retorted. "And our forces up here need all the help they can get." She pointed out the rest of the special ops sqauds, all noticably smaller. "We're still in the middle of a battle here, didn't you notice?"
"Of course I noticed. I also know that you have had to deal with too much loss, too much stress, to have any possibility of flying safely. I don't want to lose you, too. If I have to lock a tractor beam on you to get you down to the docking bay, I will."
Jaina ignored him for a long moment, knowing he was right, but entirely too reluctant to admit it. "Damn you, Durron," she muttered, heading for base on the planet below.
______________________________________________________________________________
Kyp came in right behind Jaina as she landed her X-wing in the docking bay. The two of them disembarked. "You should get some rest," he told her. She shook her head.
"There'll be a debriefing. Wedge won't accept that an attack this strong was a random occurence. He'll want us to start working strategies."
"I don't think it's fair for you to put this much stress on yourself." Jaina glared at him.
"Go to hell, Kyp. I'm not giving up my squadron."
"I'm not trying to take advantage of you - "
"Shut up," Jaina snapped, pushing open the door of the briefing room. She took a seat and settled in to wait for the rest of the pilots to return to the ground.
______________________________________________________________________________
"Damn it!" General Wedge Antilles yelled, pounding his fist on the conference room table. "What the hell happened there?" They'd lost too many people in this sudden and strong all-out offensive on what was supposed to be a secure Insiders cell. He'd long ago learned that in order to stop himself from having an emotional breakdown every time one of his people died, he instead had to throw himself into finding a way to get back at the enemy. His Jedi friends had told him on more than one occasion that vengence was probably not the best emotion with which to head his life, but it was one he was used to and knew how to deal with.
He took a deep breath, counted to ten, and locked eyes with each of the people in the room with him. He saw in each of their gazes the same thing he was feeling - confusion, anger, grief, but mostly a cold strength, a deep desire to make those responsible for the deaths of their friends pay. This was something they'd done too many times.
Danni raised a hand tenatively, and Wedge nodded to her. "I think that one or more people on this base are feeding information to the Vong," she said. "We just moved here a few days ago, and we were very secure doing it. I think it's unlikely that they got our location any other way." Wedge nodded again.
"That's my thought, too. Intelligence is working on finding the leak. In the mean time, I think some of our special ops squadrons need to come up with some contingency plans so we don't get caught by surprise again. Any ideas, Jaina?"
She shook her head. "I'm announcing my resignation. Leadership of Twin Suns Squadron belongs to Kyp." She hesitated just a fraction of a second before adding, "I can't do this anymore." Wedge held her gaze a moment longer, giving her the option of changing her mind, then nodded., turning to address the rest of the room.
"I'm sorry to have to do this to you again, but we're going to have to move."
______________________________________________________________________________
Jaina neatly packed her things into a duffle bag. She took a deep breath when she was done, fighting back tears. The last time she'd been in this room, it had been with Jag, and now...
Everything around her reminded her that Jag wasn't here, would never be here again. He'd never again wrap his strong arms around her in that hug that made her feel safer than she'd ever felt before, never again whisper in her ear that she had changed his life, that before her he hadn't even been sure that love was real, not just something you heard about in stories.
A knock startled her, followed by Kyp's voice. "I know you're in there!" he yelled. "I know you can hear me! I don't know what's going on with you. You can't back out on Twin Suns! Not now! We need you, Jaina!" He raised his hand to pound on the door again, when it suddenly opened. "What the hell's wrong with you? This squadron was supposed to be your life."
"I guess not anymore." Kyp pushed his way into the room, shutting the door behind him. He pulled Jaina to the couch, and sat down with her.
"I know Jag's death hit you hard. You need time to grieve, but..."
"It's not just Jag," Jaina bluntly interupted. Kyp looked up, momentarily startled.
"What do you mean?"
"I thought you were supposed to be a damn Jedi," Jaina shot back. "Figure it out."
Startled, Kyp reached out into the Force, feeling the turmoil of Jaina's emotions clearly radiating. He felt a new life, small but strong, and he realized... The goddess was pregnant. And Jag was gone.
______________________________________________________________________________
"Can I come in?" Jaina looked up. She had left her door open because she wanted the air to flow in. Mara was now standing in the doorway.
"I guess so."
"Jaina, you can't shut everyone out again."
"Look what happens when I let someone get close to me. I thought... I thought I'd be the one to die first, I didn't want to hurt anyone, I couldn't make anyone feel like I'm feeling now. I know it's so selfish of me, Mara, to be mad at him for dying and leaving me alone, but..." She couldn't finish. The tears were flowing freely now. The weight of everything had come crashing down. Losing Anakin, then Jag, this baby she wasn't ready for...
Mara held her niece. "This isn't the kind of galaxy you want to bring a child into, is it?"
Jaina shook her head. "I don't... I can't raise this baby without Jag. I can't do anything. I can barely convince myself to keep living." Mara gripped Jaina's shoulders, looked into her eyes.
"Listen to me. Your life is worth living. Your daughter deserves a life, deserves a mother. I know you are going through hell. I've been there. I know that moving forward won't be easy, but I promise you it will be worth it. And I will walk with you every step of the way. So how about it?" Jaina nodded.
"Thanks."
______________________________________________________________________________
Jaina had finally taken her mother's advice and taken leave. No longer in command of a squadron, and not particularly wanting to hang around on a military base, she'd taken her X-wing off in the opposite direction during the relocation. Her parents had thrown themselves into the New Rebellion project, and Luke and Mara spent the majority of their time putting together the finer details of the proposed new Jedi Council. At their suggestion, she headed for Shelter, the safe haven inside the Maw black hole cluster, to spend some time with her infant cousin Ben and the younger Jedi students.

RE: Ready Or Not Rewrite (A Post Rebel Stand J/J and J/TK story. It's better this time. Read it.)
I really have too short of an attention span to write a story that's more than three posts long, as I only seem to be able to write 2 or 3 pages at a time. But for those patient enough to put up with me, here's what I have of Chapter 3.
Ready or Not Chapter 3: Shelter
Jaina was already tired from the hours upon hours spent in her X-wing's cramped cockpit, with only intermittent naps and "conversations" with her astromech to interrupt the tedium of hyperspace. But now was no time to be falling asleep. As the nav computer beeped it's countdown, she reached for the lever and pulled it at just the right second, allowing the starlines to disappear, replaced with twinkling stars a safe distance from the Maw cluster. Reaching the safe zone in the center of the deadly anomaly would take all her concentration.
She took a deep breath, allowing herself to focus, feeling the Force flowing around her and through her. She was still a little scared to tap very much of her Jedi ability, scared of drowning in the dark side. But like a cautious child wading in the shallows of a pool, she allowed herself to get reacquainted with her power, little by little. Another reason to spend some time with the Jedi Academy students, Luke had told her. Maybe seeing the Force from a perspective other then that of a starfighter squadron commander would be helpful.
Taking a final calming breath, she dove into the Maw, letting the Force and her pilot's intuition guide her through the twists and turns of the narrow safe path surrounded on all sides by deadly black holes. Finally, the convoluted trail opened up into a clearing, in the middle of which loomed Shelter, which looked more like a contraption built with a giant child's toys than a school. But that's what it was: the Jedi Academy. Obviously not the one she remembered, the pyramid temple hidden among the jungles of Yavin 4, where she'd grown up and grown into her talents. But this space station was a shelter from the storm just as much as the old Academy, just like the Jedi Temple of the Old Republic. She shivered as she thought about the destruction of those former havens. Like Coruscant itself, the Jedi were a light in the heart of darkness, eventually they too would be swallowed up. She shook her head, clearing the thought from her mind. She clicked her comm on and hailed the station.
"Welcome, Jaina," Tionne responded. "We've been expecting you." Jaina nodded, though Tionne couldn't see her.
"It's been a long time," she agreed. She followed Tionne's directions into the docking bay. Shelter didn't have any real shields, because the black hole cluster was the best shield around, and they were building from spare parts anyway, so they didn't exactly have the money for any state of the art defense system.
Jaina landed her X-wing smoothly and locked it up, taking her astromech out for awhile, letting the droid roll along behind her as she wandered around the station. There was no welcoming committee waiting to greet her. Everyone was busy, and she felt a little uncomfortable, like she didn't belong. She roamed the hallways aimlessly, running her hand along the walls. Memories flooded her mind without her calling them up, and she looked around without really seeing.
"Jaina?" She turned to see a blonde-haired ten year old girl.
"Hey, Syal."
"Daddy said you were coming. We got a room ready for you. I can show you where it is." Jaina nodded.
"Thanks." She followed Syal, the pain of Jag's death still raw. Wedge Antilles' daughter was Jag's cousin, and though they hadn't exactly been close, and Jaina hadn't seen the girl more than a handful of times, they were still family, connected by Jag's blood, which still flowed through the child inside her.
"Where is everybody?" Jaina asked. Syal shrugged.
"They're all busy. Learning Jedi stuff. I take regular classes with the other kids in the morning, like history and math, but I can't do all the mind tricks." So like Jaina, Syal didn't really belong here, but she didn't seem to mind. Jaina let her talk, not really listening. "So in the afternoon I help out in the kitchens or the comm. center. There's always stuff to do. I'm learning how to fly the shuttle. Sometimes I go to the Jedi classes, too, with my friends. Myri's best friends with Jysella Horn, so I hang with them a lot. Tionne and Kam are really nice. They said you can help teach the classes, if you want. Or you can use the practice rooms whenever you want, too." She paused, stopping in front of a door which to Jaina looked identical to all the others they'd passed. She really should have paid more attention to where they were going. "Here's your room," Syal announced, pushing the door open to reveal a small chamber containing a bed, dresser, and desk. Another door on the far wall led to a small 'fresher. Jaina smiled, remembering her old room at the old Jedi Academy on Yavin 4, cluttered with machine parts and tools.
"Thanks Syal. Do you think I could get something to eat?" The girl nodded.
"The mess is straight down the hall. I can take you there." Jaina shook her head.
"No, I'll find it. I want to get cleaned up first." She set her bag down on her bed and instructed her astromech to wait in her quarters, on standby. The droid complied, and Jaina dismissed Syal and headed for the 'fresher.
After a quick shower and a change of clothes, Jaina felt refreshed enough to go in search of food. She walked down the halls, which were crowded now with young children of all species, implying that classes were over for the day. It didn't take long to get to the mess, only a few doors down the hall from Jaina's quarters.
She wasn't the only one there, either. Several groups of sentinents, of varying species and ages, clustered together, ingesting whatever satisfied their craving.
"Jaina! Over here!" Kam Solusar waved her over. She made her way to his table. An infant in a high chair babbled and waved at her.
"Hey Ben," she greeted her nephew, picking him up. "Do you remember me?"
"Of course he does," Kam told her. "He sees your picture every day." Jaina gave Kam a hesitant smile.
"I'm sorry I couldn't meet you earlier," Kam said. "You arrived right in the middle of our afternoon classes."
"It's alright. Syal Antilles found me and showed me my room." Kam smiled.
"I thought she might. She and her sister doing a marvelous job of adapting to life here, but I think they feel a little left out sometimes."
"Wedge misses them. He tries not to show it but..." she didn't finish the sentence, instead letting it linger. The sentiment could apply to so many. She didn't think there was anyone in the galaxy who wasn't missing someone because of the war. Kam seemed to agree.
"I think we'll all be grateful when this is over," he said simply. In Jaina's arms, Ben gurgled and waved his little arms.
I found a map to buried treasure
And even if we come home empty-handed,
We'll still have our stories, battle scars,
pirate ships and wounded hearts,
broken bonds and all the best of friendships
(Lyrics are from "so long, astoria" by The Ataris)
