Austyn, One Daughter of Flame

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tezira turned from the view- port sized screen and slammed her fist down on a nearby console.

“ No!” she shouted. Turning to the tech crew she said through clenched teeth, “ Turn the simulator off.”

One by one the pilot trainees stepped out of their sim cockpits.

“ How many of you thought that was better?” she asked.

A few hands popped up.

“ Well, you thought wrong!” she shouted, her voice reverberating through the large room. “ If this was a real battle you were flying in instead of a simulator, planetary defense would have slaughtered you by now. Your formations are too loose, and your evading is half- hearted. “ She cocked her head and smiled sarcastically. “ Have any of you ever flown in a real battle?”

The pilots looked at the ground.

“ I didn’t think so.” She said. “ In a real battle, there’s no such thing as ‘good’. There’s dead and alive. Computers don’t run a real battle. In a real battle, you might have to fly against Jedi. Do you want the excuse that you were ‘good’ on your death marker?!”

Silence reigned for a moment.

“ No!” her eyes flashed. “ Now get back in those simulators and fly like it’s real. We’re going to redo this until we finish with all pilots active. By the way,” she smiled sweetly, “ if that means staying in there past lunch, too bad.”

Groans echoed this remark, but after a pointed look from Tezira, they quieted and climbed back into the sim cockpits.

“ Alright,” she said to the tech crew, “ run it again.”

The program was run and rerun several times more.
Tezira’s commlink buzzed.

“ Tezira.” She answered.

“ Tezira, I need to see you. Come to my office immediately.”

Tezira groaned inwardly as she clicked off the commlink.

“ Keep rerunning it until I get back.” She told the tech crew as she walked out the door.

She growled. Kintar may have hired her to run his army and act as a bodyguard, but he was chiefly hindering the training process.

As well as her own plans.

“ Our plans have changed.” Kintar told her a few moments later.

“ What do you mean?” Tezira asked coldly.

“ We are changing targets. After our initial attack on Corulag, we’ll leave immediately for Coruscant and take the New Republic by surprise.”

Tezira frowned. “ You better hope your men learn a lot faster from now on than they have been, because they’ll never be ready to stage an attack on the base café, let alone the Capital, at the rate they’re going.”

Kintar smiled. “ Oh, surely, they aren’t that slow. You just expect too much.”

Tezira cocked an eyebrow. “ Every time they run the simulator the whole way through, they finish with a fourth of the fleet they started with. And trust me, if that’s the way they do against a computer, you won’t have armada to speak of the first time you try it on Coruscant’s planetary defense.”

Kintar frowned. “ Fine. Use whatever methods, incentives, or punishments you see necessary. I want this army ready to strike Coruscant in a two standard weeks.”

“ If it is possible, it will be done.” She looked at him thoughtfully. “ By the way, the ground troops I asked for are…”

Cold filled Tezira like it would an airless room at Kintar's strange smile.

“ It is nearly finished.” He stated simply.

“ I want it ready to be trained by next week,” she ordered. “ And they must be excellent in either marksmanship or hand to hand combat. Understood?” She looked at him.

“ Of course.” Kintar answered smoothly, though silently he was wondering if he could pull it off.

Tezira stalked back to the sim room more determined than ever to the pilots trained.

“ Master Tezira,” one of the sim techs called, “three times while you were gone, they beat the program without losing a single pilot.”

Tezira didn’t allow the shock she felt to show.

“ Really?” she said slowly, as if it didn’t matter. “ Run it again, now.”

As the program ran, Tezira watched the screen, her eyes narrowing. The fighters flew like completely different pilots. The formations were tight, and their maneuvering gave her a headache just watching. Sure enough, they finished the run without one immobilization.

When they reran it, the same thing happened.

“ Good.” She said coolly. “ Prepare your fighters. We’re going to Corulag.”

Karina Sorusc frowned as she stood up from where she was working on the control panel of her ship. The aft pitch- control had short- circuited on her way home from a supply run, and she had not been able to fly smoothly since.

The object of her scrutiny, a large freighter, was landing at the docking pad a cross the bay. The ID marks had been sanded off, a sure sign that it had been stolen. Karina’s father had been a security officer, and she had learned to spot a suspicious character before he did anything.

Catching the eye of one of her fellow mechanics, she nodded slightly towards the freighter.

The man, Les Gindi, raised his eyebrows and nodded slowly. Nonchalantly, so as not to draw the attention of the docking crew that was getting off the freighter, he walked towards one of the security officers standing near the custom’s check- point.

Karina went back to her work and popped the control switch back onto the board.

“ Jaryk,” she said to her nine-year-old son, “ Go get my lube oil and anti-wear adhesive.”

Jaryk jumped down from he was sitting on one of the repair- scaffold lifts and grabbed a tube of lubricant and a roll of electrical tape off the table on the other side of the ship.

Karina smiled at him and ruffled his hair.

“Where’s Rika?” She asked taking the stuff from him.

Jaryk pointed to where his two- year- old sister lay sleeping on the rolling bench that allowed mechanics to slide underneath small ships or the low undercarriage of larger ones.

Karina rolled her eyes and turned back to the control panel. Carefully, after carrying it into the cockpit, she reattached the cables to their ports and gingerly set the panel back in its correct place.

She looked through the cockpit view- port down into the bay, frowning at the absent security guards.

“ Jaryk,” she called, suddenly apprehensive, “ get Rika; we’re going for a ride.”

Skipping most procedures, she shot out of Corulag’s atmosphere.

She frowned as she layed in a jump to the Kathol sector.

Two huge fighter carriers, three, vast Imperial issue Star Destroyers, including a command ship, and several corvettes sat just inside a major entry vector.

“ Rika, tighten up,” she commanded, “ Jaryk, boost our for- shields and warm up the turbo- lasers.”

Jaryk undid his crash- webbing and moved to the front of the cockpit.

He turned a few knobs and flicked a switch.

“ Done.” He said.

“ Strap in up here.” She told him. “ And keep an eye on the threat board.” She looked up at the fleet blocking her escape vector.

“ We’ll just hope they’re friendly.” She murmured.

Tezira stood on the bridge watching the small scout ship fly toward them, thinking.

“ Should I deploy a flight team to intercept it?” her bridge officer asked.

“ No,” she decided, “ we’re too far to jam any transmissions it might send out. Safer to appear neutral.”

“ Yes, Admiral.” The officer nodded to one of his subordinating crew who gave the stand- by command.

“ All star-destroyers stand by for fire.’ She added.

The officer echoed her orders into a comm channel between the star destroyers.

“ Have the fleet stand by for mobilization and combat. When we pick up the Shadow Queen ’s signal, fire on my mark.”

She waited. Silence permeated the room as crew scrambled to their stations.

Karina narrowed her eyes watching the immobile fleet in front of her for the slightest sign that they were going to ambush her.

They didn’t.

“ I guess they’re either friendly or at least neutral.” She said reluctantly, an unidentified fear still nagging her. Something was not…

“ Strap back in, Jaryk.” She said finally.

Jaryk sat down in his seat next to Rika and pulled his crash webbing over his head and buckled it.

Karina pulled the hammer, suddenly crying out even as the stars streaked into the lines of hyperspace.

“ Admiral, we are picking up the Queen ’s signal.”

“ On my mark.” she repeated, “ One, two, mark!”

All three star destroyers fired their lasers simultaneously.

“ Deploy fighters!” She commanded.

Planetary Defense fighters swarmed the space over Corulag.

Tezira watched as her fighter squadron took out ship after ship while the star destroyers pummeled the small planet with laser fire.

“ Admiral, the enemies’ defense fleet is destroyed.”

She narrowed her eyes.” How many fighters did we lose?”

“ One, Admiral: the pilot went EV and survived.”

“ Recover the pilot and his ship. We’ll repair it on the way to Coruscant.” She noticed signs of the planet’s core collapsing.
“ Call all fighters back to sector eleven, now.”

The Flight Commander repeated the order into the open comm channel.

“ Prepare for hyperspace. On my mark, one…”

Officers ran to various positions as they readied the fleet for hyperspace, feeding the coordinates to each ship.

“ Two…”

The fighters all closed their s-foils and formed travel formation. The recovery corvette pulled back into one of the freighters, just before Corulag exploded in a fountain of superheated gas and magma.

“ Mark!”

_______***_________***_________***___________

Tezira sat on her ship, in orbit around Coruscant, planning the invasion when her commlink buzzed. She frowned and picked it up.

Who could that be? She wondered.

She clicked it on. “ Tezira here.”

“ Ahh, Tezira. So nice to speak to you.” She heard Kintar’s voice and fought the urge to retch.

“ What do you want?” She growled.

“ You shouldn’t speak that way to your leading officer.”
“ Probably not.” She retorted, loading her voice with sarcasm.

“ It’s concerning your invasion of Coruscant. Tomorrow night there is a senatorial ball, and Khreth thinks we should attend.”

“ Who is ‘we’?” she demanded.

“ Why, you and me, of course.” Kintar purred.

Not exactly. She thought. “ Minor glitch in that plot,” she said with saccharine sweetness. “ We’re not senators.” Please don’t tell me this guy’s stupid enough to think New Republic security is not going care.

“ Actually, I will be posing as a Dellatian senator."

“ And I ?”

“ You’ll be posing as my lovely personal aide.”

Oh, joy. she gagged.

“ Is there a problem, Tezira ?” Kintar asked cooly
.
She grimaced. “ We don’t even look Dellatian, and it’s obvious security is going to know you’re not the well loved senator, for one. I could name several others."

“ Not to worry. I can craft a disguise with the Force for both of us.”

I’m sure you could. “I’ll do my own disguise, thank you very much. Just send a holo of what I’m supposed to look like, and I’ll do the rest.”

“ Very well. I’ll see you tomorrow night.” And with that, he clicked off the channel. Tezira smiled coldly at the dead commlink, flicking her hand, shadows swirling up to veil it . If only you knew the plans I had for you.

Once the quiet moon of Yavin 4 had been unknown to galaxy, save those who lived there. Exar Kun and the Rebellion had changed all that. The temples that had once given the Massassi people a place to worship now served to house the students of the Jedi Academy.

The majority of the classes for the Academy were held in the Great Temple, the larger of the two main temples. During the war with the Yuzhan Vong, most of the above ground structure had been destroyed, but the subterranean levels had remained completely undiscovered and intact. Since the end of the war, the damaged portion had been partially restored, and crews were still working on it. It would probably be some time before the very upper levels would be back to their pre-war condition.

An orange clad figure ran through the main corridor of the first above-ground level, flashing past several curious young students.

“Oh, I hate being late!” Tahiri Veila said in frustration, hitting the call button on the turbolift control panel.

“Come on, come on!” she urged, bouncing up and down. She looked at her chronometer nervously and winced. She was definitely late, standard time or not. How two hours had passed unnoticed was beyond her.

The turbolift pinged as its doors opened. Several emerging students stared at her oddly as she dove past them into the turbolift and hit the sublevel two icon.

Maybe I can slip in quietly and no one will notice I’m late.

“Yeah, sure, Tahiri.” She muttered to herself. “When ysalamari sing.” She shook her head. “Master Skywalker is going to fry me.” She moaned.

She walked out of the turbolift almost before the doors had finished opening and ran to the door to her class. She shut her eyes for a moment, murmuring a prayer for invisibility, took a deep breath, and eased the door open.

Her physics professor, Jedi Kien D’ar, had his back turned when she entered the room. A couple of her classmates turned to look at her, but Tahiri knew they were the ones with the most sensitive peripheral perceptions.

She tiptoed to her desk and slipped into her seat.

“Miss Veila, can you give me the answer to problem twelve?”

Tahiri froze, frantically trying to see around her professor to see the board.

“No, Miss Veila, the question was on the homework. And since that question is so difficult, then answer this one. Why are you late? Again?” he raised his eyebrows questioningly.

“Would you believe Master Skkywalker assigned cafeteria cleanup today?” she replied, pouring as much smug certainty into her words as she could muster. Maybe with Kien’s limited force perception, he wouldn’t be able to ascertain the truth.

Kien looked amused. “Quite frankly, Miss Veila…NO.”

A few chuckles and snickers floated through the room. Tahiri saw her friend, Zekk, trying to hide his grin. She didn’t even want to look at Jacen Solo, who stood beside the door with a small smile.

“I’m sorry, Kien, I was working on an experiment.” She explained quietly.

D’ar’s eyes twinkled “Modifying your speederbike, you mean.” He corrected.

“Same difference.” Tahiri muttered to herself.

“Well, I wish I could let it go, Miss Veila , but I’m afraid this time I must inform Master Skywalker. Perhaps it will not be necessary to issue any consequences if this is the last time you are late.”

“Huh, not with the Luke and Mara I know.” She mumbled, but nodded.

D’ar smiled knowingly.

“Alright, on to problem thirteen…”

Luke Skywalker sat in his room thinking. He looked out the viewport at the gardens where some of the students liked to meditate or, in the case of the younger students, play games of seek-and-find.

His wife, Mara, and their niece, Jaina, sat on one of the stone benches, talking. Since the day Corulag had been attacked and destroyed, Jaina had not been herself. Pretty understandable when she had seen enough fighting to last several lifetimes. Jaina had already lost many friends and family members in the war with the Yuzhan Vong, and the chance that she might lose anyone else was one that made her put walls around herself in effort to survive another emotional blow.

Luke worried about his sister and her family. As a former Princess and Chief- of- State, Leia had inevitably placed more publicity on her husband and children than was healthy. Being one of the few Force-strong in the early days after the Empire hadn’t helped either.

Luke’s son, Ben, who was now two, toddled across the clearing between the various trees and shrubs to his mother and cousin.

Mara smiled at her son, but it was Jaina who picked him up and hugged him. He was one of the few people Jaina still let her walls down for.

Ben was chattering away to her about something, and she was listening intently, nodding every so often.

Luke watched as Mare eyed her niece oddly and said something.

He could almost hear the words.
“You need kids of your own.”

Jaina nodded absentmindedly before she caught herself, and blushed.

Mara laughed.

Ben, confused as to why all the attention was suddenly diverted from him but not offended enough to move, popped his thumb into his mouth and leaned up against Jaina.

Jaina said something quietly that Luke did not catch.

Mara shook her head, smiling slightly.

“Don’t wait forever.”
Her somber words echoed in Luke’s mind.

He suddenly wished he knew what Jaina had said.

His commlink interrupted his moment of quiet.

“Skywalker.” He said.

“Master Skywalker, sir, I’m sorry to bother you, but there’s a small freighter orbiting, and it wishes to land.”

“Very well. Tell them they can land. I will take a few people and meet them in the hangar bay.”

“Yes, sir.”

Luke set his commlink down and sighed. So much for solitude.

“You’re not very good at eavesdropping, you know.” Mara muttered dryly to him a few minutes later as they walked to the Academy’s hangar bay, where they would meet Kirana Ti, Corran Horn and Raynar Thul. Jaina, much to her dislike at not being invited, had stayed in Luke and Mara’s complex with Ben.

“What do you mean?” Luke asked.

“Give it up, Skywalker, that farm-boy innocence just runs too deep.” She said affectionately.

Luke sighed. “Ok, how did I give myself away?”

She looked at him. “An undeniable sense of curiosity, with maybe underlining guilt at spying, filled my awareness as I was talking to Jaina. Try getting a better grip on your feelings next time.”

“Yes, Master Jade.” Luke answered, feigning meekness.

“Oh, come on Skywalker.” Mara growled slightly, though Luke could detect a smile tugging at her lips.

When they got to the docking bay, the freighter had just landed. Small was an understatement; the ship was not more than shuttle size.

The Jedi formed themselves into a loose triangle, Luke at the front, with Mara directly behind him on the right.

The hatch opened, and a brunette woman climbed out. Luke started to cross the room to her, when he saw her helping someone out.

Mara immediately stepped around him and walked over to the woman and her two children.

Luke watched his wife talk to woman for several minutes.

Laughter rippled through the remaining Jedi.

“Looks like there’s been a change of command.” Someone joked.

“Whose giving orders now, Master Skywalker?” someone else, Raynar , Luke thought, said.

“If I could get her to take complete control, I would gladly hand the command over to her.” Luke said, shaking his head. He walked over towards Mara.

“Luke,” Mara’s face was dark and troubled, “this is Karina Sorusc. She’s from Corulag.”

Luke bent his head.

“ I’m sorry of the tragedy that has befallen your home.” He said quietly.

“ Thank you.” She answered just as softly. “I actually came to ask if my children could be trained.”

Luke nodded. “If you don’t mind staying for a few days, we’ll test your children and see if they’re ready.”

“That is all I can ask.” Karina answered.

Leia grinned at Han. He hated dressing formally for these parties. Every time, he’d balk until the day of, and then make sure she never forgot what a pain-in-the-neck these socials were to him. He was at the moment waiting for them to be introduced and seated, so he could loosen his tie. Leia knew he would have taken his dinner jacket off if she hadn’t warned him already.

“…Princess Leia Organa Solo, and her husband, General Han Solo.”

Han pushed off the wall, took her arm, and walked purposefully through the double doors to the Grand Auditorium, the very room in which they had been married.

Pausing to shake hands with the dignitaries, Han pasted on a half-smile.

“How nice to finally meet you, General Solo.” The main speaker, a senator Han had never even heard of before, said, flashing a brief, saccharine smile.

Leia glared at Han when he merely nodded.

“ Sorry, sweetheart, but I’m still not used to the insincerity of your politician buddies.” He said as they sat down.

Leia frowned. “My politician buddies?”

Han shrugged. “The invitation was addressed to you, not me.”

Leia expelled an exasperated sigh, the one she usually used when the children weren’t listening. “That’s because I’m the ex-senator/Chief-of-State, and you’re the ex-general.”

Han gave her a lopsided grin. “ I’ll remember that the next time you complain about my not caring about all those protocol codes. I’m a smuggler at heart, Highness-ness. In fact, you should side with the chief- of -state on those new trading restrictions, so I can go back to my old job.” Han twirled a tumbler on his forefinger.

“ Fat chance, laser-brains.” She muttered as one of the servitors began to set out the food.

Han wrinkled his nose in disgust as the pungent aroma of boiled rocshare fish wafted across the room.

“ Whatever happened to good old Correllian style khrepit steaks?” Then he looked around the room and saw that most of the senators were fish eaters by nature.

His attention was suddenly drawn to the dais as the chief of state, Cal Omas ,stepped up to the raised platform and the projection speaker.

“ Honorable senators of the Galactic Alliance. I greet you in a time of peace. Our wars with the Yuzhan Vong are over. However, we must not let our guard slacken, but take advantage of this rest to rebuild the worlds and lives destroyed by the Yuzhan Vong. It is also during this time that we should take the measures to protect our galaxy from such unopposed terror in the future by repairing our fleet and renewing our bonds of alliance. The small planets of Corulag and Yabro have yet to express their loyalties. I wish to put forth a movement to send a diplomatic team to these worlds.” Omas paused for a moment and surveyed the room. “ I wish to recognize former-Chief-of-State Organa Solo.” Omas finished and stepped down.

Han started when Leia stood and walked purposefully toward the platform.

“ I have news that came to me via Jedi Master Mara Jade Skywalker. According to an eye-witness, Corulag has been destroyed.” She paused, and horrified whispers filled the auditorium.

Han glanced over at Cal Omas and saw the dread written on her face.

Leia took a deep breath and went on.

“ This time of peace can sometimes be the most dangerous time we face. Aimless political bickering can drive us apart and make us our own enemies. But our time of peace may be about to end. Should Corulag’s demise indeed be the result of an act of senseless terror, and not a tragic, but natural occurrence, we must join together and fight this unseen enemy. The value of new allies rises in the face of conflict. I support the chief of state’s movement to send a diplomatic team to Yabro.” She stepped back and nodded to her captive audience.

Tezira eased the door to the central planetary defense room and slipped inside. It had been one test of her skills to find out where the place was, but with a little pulling the right male strings…

She smiled to herself at the thing Coruscant called security. Like holding up a blaster in the face of a Noghri. Completely ineffectual.

She crossed the room to a console and slid an ID card into the slot. A search screen popped up, and she tapped a few keys before hitting the ENTER command.

The computer clicked and whirred for a moment as it searched. Tezira sighed and tapped her nails against the console impatiently as she waited. Finally, the file she was looking for appeared.

She leaned forward to peer at the screen. After a few moments of studying the measurements she looked down at the keyboard and tapped a few commands. The screen altered slightly, but she disabled the file and duplicated the on-screen settings to the originals.

She blinked as she closed the file and pulled up the Central defense files. A scowl pulled at her forehead as a box popped up informing her a security code must be entered to match the ID card. She turned the card over to check the backside.

True to common practice, the code was hand-written on the back. She shook her head ruefully and typed out the code.

The file opened, and she narrowed her eyes. It took only a few moments to see it was the information she needed, and she pushed a datacard into the copying port.

The computer spit the card out when it was done, and she erased the file’s user memory, effectively wiping away all trace of her presence.

She turned and scanned the room quickly before turning to leave, brushing her shoulder against the doorjamb as she slipped out completely unnoticed.

Several minutes later, the Senators were still giving concurring speeches as dessert was being served. Between taking huge bites of marbled-cream cake, tugging at his collar, and dodging discreet kicks from Leia, Han surveyed the room.

“Gee, Princess, who’s that over there?” Han pointed, drawing stares from nearby tables. Leia smacked his hand down.

“ Don’t point! And I don’t know who that is. Probably some Senator’s aid. If you had listened at all during the introductions instead of trying to sneak your necktie off, you’d know yourself.” She craned her neck. A young human woman with waist-length black hair wearing a stunning green dress was seated with a dark young Senator wearing a maroon suite.

“Hmm.” Leia mused. “I’ve never seen her before. Or that senator she’s with.” She turned to Han. “Quit staring and finish your dessert. It’s almost time for the dance.”

“Wow. Just when I thought you were the only beautiful senator left.” He gave her that corky, lopsided grin.
Leia suppressed a smile. “She can’t be a senator. She’s too young. And it looks like she’s taken already. Too bad. I guess you’re stuck with me.”

Han tried to look hurt. “ Hey, nothing wrong with looking. I already got the most beautiful girl in the galaxy. Besides, she looks about Jacen’s age; he can’t stay single forever, ya know.”

“Han! Jacen’s only twenty-one!”

“Well, he’s not gonna stay twenty-one for the rest of his life.’

Leia gave an exasperated sigh. “Let’s go dance. Listed. They’re playing my favorite Alderaanian triplette.” She pulled him to his feet. “C’mon.”

Han groaned. “ There’s a reason it’s called the trip -lette, ya know.”

After a few minutes, however, he began to get the hang of it and grinned.

“Well, your worship, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say this was kinda fun.”

They paused while Leia greeted a large, birdlike senator who complimented their dancing.

Leia nudged Han and hoped he remembered all the coaching she’d given him about returning compliments.

She was horrified, however, when Han said nicely, “ That’s a nice beak you’re wearing. Is it new?”

But the senator just laughed. “Your pet is so funny!” she told Leia.

Leia smiled sweetly. “I know.”

Han just sputtered.

“Nice ship.” Mara complimented, running her hands along the surface as Karina worked on her right repulsorlift.

“Thanks.” Karina said, pulling out two charred wires and grimacing. “My husband gave it to me.”

“Did he escape Corulag?” Mara asked, dreading the answer.

“No,” Karina replied, “he died a year and a half ago.” She clipped one of the wires.

”I’m sorry.” Mara said.

Karina silently clipped the other wire.

“Jaryk looks a lot like him.” She said finally, clasping the fusion torch around the two wires and soldering them together.

“What was he like?” Mara asked, leaning against the side of the ship.

Karina thought for a moment. “Quiet. Calm. Compassionate, but firm.” She smiled. “The first time I saw him, I wondered how a man who looked so dignified and just got to be in the Underworld.”

“Underworld?” Mara asked curiously.

“Yes. The Underworld is what people called Corulag’s slave market. I was kidnapped when I was almost nineteen and taken to Corulag, center for one of the largest black markets for slaves in the galaxy. Geryn just happened to walk in as I was being auctioned off. He saved me from being bought by Magow, one of the cruelest men this universe had ever fostered.” She pushed the resoldered wire back into the mass of power cables.

Mara watched her. “Did you ever think about escaping?”

Karina shrugged. “Once. I learned pretty fast that while slavery isn’t legal on Corulag, it’s pretty much accepted. Besides, I had no way to get home, and no family to go home to.”

“When did you marry him?”

Karina slid out from under her ship. “About two and a half years after he bought me. He taught me to fly about every ship available on Corulag, and I helped him on his supply run. The day after my twenty-first birthday, he gave me this.” She lifted up a crescent-shaped pendant with foreign writing engraved on it. “It’s in the old tongue which is sacred to the Corulagians. It means that I am free, and anyone who harms me commits a crime against the Maker.” She dropped it back underneath her tunic. “My children each have one, too.”

Mara smiled. “It sounds like your husband was a great man.”

Karina nodded. “He wasn’t perfect, but I could not have asked for a more caring, thoughtful, understanding Master or husband.” She thought for a moment. “Many people disapproved of our marriage because he was almost thirteen years older than I was; and while he may not have been the most passionate man, and he may have been much like a father to me, I can not imagine having been married to someone else.”

Her eyes were distant. She blinked. “How did you meet your husband?”

Mara shook her head. “I was on a mission to kill him.”

Karina stared at her. “Seriously?”

Mara grinned. “Seriously. I tried several times to fulfill my goal, but each time it was more convenient to have him alive. Eventually I got used to having him around.”

Karina cocked her head incredulously. “So you married him?”

“Well, I guess I knew the force had more in store for us than
friends. He asked, and trust me,” she rolled her
eyes, “ Skywalkers have a stubborn streak in them. I knew he wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer.”

Karina shook her head. “Much more remarkable than Geryn
and I.”

“Maybe. But your life together was quieter at least.”

“Yeah.”

“But as much as it may sound weird, I wouldn’t trade my hectic, endless-responsibility- filled years with Luke for a million quiet ones.”

“I perfectly understand.”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Leia Organa Solo, a Skywalker by birth, but choosing to keep the name of the only family she had ever known, sat in her private lounge talking to Wedge Antilles via holocomm.

“ No, Leia, I promise am not purposefully delaying the process; I swear upon my Correllian blood.”

Leia nodded. “ I do not doubt your word, General, but I do not see the reasoning behind the delay. It is senseless to hold out on such an opportunity. This stinks of senate interference.”

“ I agree.” He nodded. “ Unfortunately, politics has a major part in this process. You have to have the Senate issue a political sanction policy, or we’re going to have the same problems we went through with the Yuzhan Vong all over again”

“ True,” she answered, “but many of the Jedi are eager to see this program begin.”

“ Especially Jaina?” Wedge guessed with a grin.

“ Of course especially Jaina.” Leia laughed, rolling her eyes. “That girl is definitely Han’s child.”

Wedge cocked his head thoughtfully. “ Oh, I think she gets a lot of it from the Skywalker side.”

Leia narrowed her eyes. “ Wedge Antilles, are you calling me stubborn?”

Wedge shrugged. “ If that’s how you take it…”

“You always were too outspoken for your own good.” She muttered

“Well, Princess Leia, if you don’t think me rude in saying so, you always have been—”

Suddenly, the holocomm’s screen went dark.

“ General?” Leia said curiously. “ General!” A siren went off somewhere in the palace.

Leia stood quickly as the door slid open.

“ Lady Vader,” Meewahl, her Noghri bodyguard mewled. “ You must come with me.” She gestured with one webbed hand at the viewport. “The city is under attack!”

I can't believe this. I'm down to begging, something i said i'd never do. COME ON PEOPLE!! Make my day and reply to this!!!
READ ON, my great audience of NOONE. cry

--------------------------------------------

Jaina Solo strode through the halls of the Jedi temple in search of her aunt. She knew Mara would probably be in either the hangar bay working on her ship or in the complex where she and her husband lived.

“Hey, Zekk.” She called to one of her friends.

Zekk looked up to see who was talking to him and smiled.

“Hey, Jaina.” He replied. “Where you off to?”

“To find Aunt Mara. I'm going to see if she wants to do some sims.”

“If she doesn't, come find me.”

“Will do.” Jaina called over her shoulder.

“Jaina.” She heard Kyp's voice and groaned inwardly. While Kyp was a friend of hers, he tended to be somewhat overbearing in his efforts to keep her from making the same mistakes he had in his training.

She turned. “What, Kyp?”

He walked toward her. “Have you seen your uncle lately?”

'”Oh, now I'm a walking directory, am I?” she asked playfully.

Kyp looked at her. “You know very well that I am only asking because he is your uncle.”

Jaina grinned. “Yeah, I know. I'm just trying to give you a hard time. See it as my duty as your commanding officer.”

She smiled sweetly, having effectively reminded him that he was still under her command in the Twin Suns squadron.

Kyp didn't seem to notice. “ Oh, that reminds me. This was at the comm office.” He handed her a piece of flimsiplast with a message scribbled on it.

She read it quickly. “Are you sure this is real?” she asked, looking up.

Kyp nodded. “The comm officer said it came directly from General Antilles.”

Jaina grinned.

“I got to go, Kyp. Wanna tell the Twin Suns a mandatory meeting tomorrow at 1400?”

Kyp smiled and bent over in a low, sweeping bow. “To hear is to obey, Great One.”

Jaina practically ran the rest of the way to the Skywalker complex.

“Hold it right there, Jaina Solo.” Her aunt warned when she burst through the door. “I can see that you've got something on your mind, but I'm going to make you wait until you answered some questions.”

Jaina froze, her gaze involuntarily straying to the blonde girl sitting in the corner of the room.

Tahiri gave her an undecipherable look.

Oh, not good. Jaina thought.

“ Why were you late to dueling today?” her aunt demanded, folding her arms across her chest. “And if your wondering, I got the full confession from Tahiri, so the question is mostly rhetorical.”

Jaina groaned. One of the downsides of being the niece of the famous Master Skywalker was that there was no such thing as getting away with something. You might as well have worn a sign around your neck saying what you had done that day, because they were going to find out anyway.

“I'm sorry, Aunt Mara, we were flying the simulators, and I just didn't look at my chronometer.”

Mara seemed unconvinced. “Uh-huh. Mind telling me why your chronometer always seems to work when your running timed calisthenics, but never when your doing sims?”

Jaina didn't say anything, but she heard Tahiri snickering.

Mara turned. “I wouldn't be laughing if I were you.” She cautioned. “Just because I' m talking to Jaina at this point in time, do not think you are off the hook. As soon as Luke gets back from his conference, we're going to have a lengthily discussion about responsibility.”

Tahiri abruptly stopped laughing.

A wail arose from the back room where Ben was sleeping. With a sigh, Mara turned and walked away. Jaina breathed a sigh of relief, and glared at Tahiri.

The blonde girl made a what-was-I -supposed-to -do gesture.

She was onto us , she mouthed.

So? Jaina mouthed back, you're the best liar of us all.
Tahiri shrugged. I tried, but you can't lie to her. She knows everything.

Mara walked back into the room with Ben in her arms. Both girls froze.

I see what you mean, Jaina mimed back when her aunt had turned her back.

“All right, Jaina,” Mara said finally, “what was it you wanted to tell me?”

Jaina frowned. She hadn't expected her aunt to let her off that easily.

Well, I'm not going to complain.
"The bill passed. It's going to the senate. General Antilles wanted the Twin Suns to be recognized along with the Rogues.”

“Hold on. Back up. You mean the bill to recognize some politically sanctioned fighter squadrons?”

“Right.”

“ And Wedge wants to recognize the Twin Suns as one of the sanctioned squadrons.”

“Right. We leave for Coruscant in two days. Can you come?”

Mara nodded. “Luke has a meeting with some Senator or another, and we're all going.” She looked at Tahiri. “ Well, some of us might be staying to catch up on some lagging studies.”

Tahiri sank lower into her seat.

“ Oh, Jaina, I want you to meet a friend.” Mara gestured at the door. Jaina turned to see a young woman standing in the doorway. “ Jaina, this is Karina Sorusc.”

The woman nodded. “Nice to meet you.” She looked at Mara. “Is this a bad time?”

Mara smiled. “Not at all. I've just been getting onto a couple of unruly kids.” She grinned at Tahiri.

Tahiri reddened.

Karina smiled. “Oh, I see. I have to hound Jaryk every once in a while. Probably late for school, right?”

Tahiri's jaw dropped.

Mara and Karina both laughed.

“Hey, Aunt Mara, I was going to go do some sims, do you want to come?” Jaina asked.

Mara shook her head. “Sorry, Jaina, but I have to pack.” She looked at Karina. “Luke suddenly seems to think that his appearance matters.” She said dryly. “After all the years I've been trying to get him to lose the wise old Jedi look, he finally decides to wear regular clothes again on his own.”

“Tahiri?” Jaina asked.

The girl brightened. “Sure!” She jumped up, and followed Jaina.

“Oh, no you don't.” Mara called. “Young lady, if you plan on going to Coruscant with us, you must have all your history done and your bag packed by this evening.”

Tahiri groaned and looked apologetically at Jaina.

“ You going to the sims?” Karina asked.

Jaina nodded.

“You mind if I come?”

Jaina shrugged. “Not at all.”

Karina nodded. “ You wanna go now?”

“Sure.”

With a goodbye to Mara, the two young women were on their way.

“So what is your reason for coming to the Academy?” Jaina asked as they walked.

“My husband suspected a glimmer of Force-sensitivity in my son, and then such signs have been manifesting themselves in my daughter lately. I decided to come here and see if Master Skywalker could test them.”

Jaina looked interested. “ Is there a history of Force-talent in your family?”

Karina smiled. “ In my family? No. But my husband's family had several Jedi before the Empire.”

Jaina nodded. “ My mother's side of the gene pool has a fair amount of the Force talent, but my father's genealogy has no record of ever fostering any Jedi.”

Karina looked thoughtful. “Has that been strange? Having a mother who probably has more Force-potential than probably half your uncle's students combined, and a father…”

“Who doesn't know one end of a lightsaber from the other?” Jaina finished.

“Yeah.”

Jaina shrugged. “ Not really. I guess I'm used to it.” They entered the room that held all the simulators. “ Group attack or one on one?”

“ One on one.”

Jaina shrugged. “ Whatever you say.” She climbed into the simulator nearest to her. If Mara had been present, she would have warned Karina to stay away from the solo attack setting, and not to let Jaina choose which simulator she wanted.

Jaina grinned. This was going to be more fun than she had thought.

She pulled her headset on. “How many kills?”

“Quick and easy death.”

Jaina hit the settings and calibrated the controls.

She glanced at what would have been the viewport of an x-wing, but was the visual screen on a simulator.

Karina's fighter appeared onscreen.

“Quick and easy kill? Ok.” She spun the x-wing in a barrel roll as the other fighter got on her tail. When the other fighter was sufficiently entangled in trying to copy the move, she jerked the yoke to pull her own out of the roll and put it into a smuggler's loop, firing as she did.

But Karina's fighter had disappeared from her visual scope.

“What the-?” she cried a tiny millisecond before the walls of the sim cockpit vibrated to show that her opponent had been awarded a kill.

Ok, maybe this won't be as easy as I thought.
She grimaced and hit the reset button.

Once again, Karina ended up on the chasing side, a fact that caused Jaina to make a face.

Well, I'm not making the same mistake this time.
She vowed. Instead of going into a barrel roll, she flew straight and waited for Karina to start firing. If she could get her to use all of her fire power, then she get behind her to earn a kill.
She wasn't going to try another smuggler's roll until her opponent was relatively helpless.

She instinctively threw the yoke to the side to evade the stutter fire that was coming dangerously close to her left wing, grinning as she did.

She watched the visual screen for a moment before repeating the maneuver easily.

Her danger sense only managed a brief warning before her sim rattled again.

“One more!” Karina crowed.

Jaina's jaw dropped. “How many times have you been down here before?”

“Never.”

“You're kidding me.” Jaina said in disbelief.

“I'm not.” Karina answered cheerfully. “Sorry to disappoint you.”

Jaina smacked the power button. “C'mon.”

“What about the game?”

“Forget the game. I've got Twin Suns business to attend to.”

“Huh?”

“Ever flown in a politically sanctioned squadron before?”

“No.”

“Well, now is the time to learn.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Do you, Miss Solo, understand the implications of your squadron being politically sanctioned?”

Jaina nodded to the senator addressing her. “I believe so, sir.”

“You will still receive some government issued materiel and salary to distribute among your pilots, though not as much as a Galactic Alliance Military Squadron would. You will be given an assignment, however, you will be allowed to turn it down.” The senator shifted in his chair. “The accountability segment in the agreement is the most confusing, so I ask you to pay careful attention at this point.”

Jaina nodded, with a subtle glance at Winter Celchu. With Winter’s holographic memory, Jaina could always go back and ask her former caretaker to repeat what had been said.

“You will be directly responsible and accountable to a Galactic Alliance Military figure. You will not be a part of the Chief of State’s military policies, and therefore not conformed to the political decisions made by this body. If the Galactic Alliance is engaged in a war, you will be called upon to serve, but the tactical details of your own squadron’s engagements with both other allied forces, and the enemy is up to your discretion. However, if your assigned military advisor submits a report stating he personally believes you to be negligent or aggressive in personal vendettas, this body will review your recent behavior and decide if your place on the sanctioned list should be revoked. Is that clear?’

Jaina nodded. “Perfectly so.”

The senator nodded. “Then if you will please sign this document,” he gestured to a manila sheet on the desk in front of the dais, “the act will take effect immediately.”

Jaina stepped up onto the lower platform, followed by Colonel Jagged Fel.

She signed the appopriateline with growing excitement as Jag looked on as a witness.

“Thank you, Major Solo. May I congratulate you on your new status.”

Jaina nodded. “Thank you, Senator.”

“You will report to General Antilles from this moment forward.”

Jaina turned slightly to see Wedge standing off to the side.

“Major.” He nodded.

“General.” She was almost shaking.

“Dismissed.” He saluted.

Jaina returned the salute before turning to lead her pilots out of the audience chamber, the grin she’d been holding back for the entire session now splitting her face.

She paused when she felt the ground trembling beneath her feet. She looked at Jag to find him frowning at her.

“You feel that?” she asked him

He nodded slowly.

By now, the rest of the squadron had stopped, waiting for their leaders.

“What are you—” one pilot started to ask.

“Shhh.” Kyp hushed him.

It was then Jaina heard the low rumble.

Karina’s eyes had widened.

“Something’s—” Jaina began.

She was cut off by a loud ripping noise and looked up.
Jag shoved her out of the way of a falling chunk of duracrete.

Sirens suddenly began to blare around them.

“The city’s under attack.” Kyp noted.

Jaina pulled herself back up. “ Get to the fighter bay.” She ordered.

"Major..." the pained expression on Karina's face was easily understood.

"Go." Jaina nodded. "I'll be right behind you."

The unspoken question was clear on Jag’s face.

“Her children are with my family. ” She explained to him. “When we're sure they’re fine, we’ll come.”

Jag nodded and squeezed her hand. “Be careful.”

Jacen Solo ran as fast as he could through the corridors of the Imperial Palace, dodging frantic citizens carrying their valuables as they attempted to find someplace safer than their homes.

His ears rang from the incessant alarms that echoed throughout the palace as he hurried to the war room.

He pressed his right forefinger to the bioscanner and turned before the door had hissed open.

He strode into the room purposefully. The area had been transformed from its dormant state to the epitome of activity. People rushed everywhere, from the strategy computer to the tactical display, to the command centers.

“Jacen!” His mother called from across the room.

Jacen saw her and walked over to her.

She was dressed in a white combat suite and had her hair in the old style she had loved during the days of the Rebellion.

“What is our current battle status?” he asked.

Leia looked grim. “Not good. All of our ships are experiencing severe magnetic repulsion near the troposphere.”

Jacen frowned. “Is the energy shield still up?”

“ That’s what it appears to be, but the shield techs swear it failed about an hour ago.”

Jacen thought for a moment. “ Have you heard from Jaina?”

Leia shook her head. “ No. The communications satellites are all down. Only short-range commlinks are working.”

Jacen nodded.

Leia stared at the tactical display in silence. “It isn’t going to matter where your sister is if we can’t figure out how to defend Coruscant more effectively.”

Jacen stood silently. He looked down at the security access computer in silence.

“Access shield controls.” He ordered the computer.

A new page popped up, but it had an access code requirement.

“ Authorization: Alderaan2229Dathmir2633JJA.” Leia said quietly.

“Authorization accepted.”

Jacen peered at the unlocked page. Nothing appeared tampered with, but to be sure, he reached out with the Force and tried to see the controls as they should be.

He opened his eyes and shook his head. “ I can’t sense anything wrong with the controls. That’s not the problem.” he frowned.“ I don’t—“

He froze.

“Access data. Keyword: ROTS.”

“Several matches found. Specify.”

“Remote Operational Transitory Shielding”

“Two files found.”

“Access file one.”

A datafile appeared on the screen. Jacen studied it soberly. Finally he pulled a datacard out of his pocket.

“ Copy info onto datacard.”

“Authorization code required.”

Jacen looked at his mother.

“ Authorization: Alderaan2229Dathmir2633JJA.” Leia repeated the code.

Jacen took the datacard the computer spit out distastefully a moment later.

“I need to get this to the chief of state.” He said, turning to leave the war room.

Leia frowned. “Jacen, what is ROTS?”

“ Something Aunt Mara once told me about. Remote Operational Transitory Shielding. One of our scientists created it during the Clone War revolts, when everyone was under suspicion of being a traitor. It allows a unit to generate an energy shield from an off-world location. Because the consumers didn’t want to make it common knowledge which planets were using ROTS units, they were small units with one-size-fits-all controls. The shield could be expanded or contracted to the size of the planet.” He paused for a moment. “ They’re using our own technology against us.”

“You think they’re using a ROTS unit to confine us to the planet surface.”

Jacen was motionless for a moment before nodding. “ I think so. I’m not sure. I need to get this to chief-of-state Omas so his security can analyze it.”

Leia was quiet as she stared at the tactics board, watching as ships were obliterated against an unseen wall.

“Go.”

OK. I started to read it but my computer is being mean so before I get kicked off again I just wanted to say you're doing a great job. I'm really enjoying your stories. One thing I learned is never give up and don't worry about what others think. If you think it's good then it's good but if you think it's bad you'll never see it as anything else. Sorry just a little free advice.

Jaina Solo raced through the various levels of the Imperial Palace, weaving through piles of junk discarded by Coruscant’s citizens in the mass exodus. Other than the occasional technician, security officer and military personnel, the long marble hallways were fairly empty.

Most of the turbolifts had the indecency to have malfunctioned at such a inopportune time, so she took the stairs.

She unclipped her commlink from her belt.

“Mom, are you there?” she asked as she turned it on.

The only reply was static.
She winced, thinking of the woman running beside her and she must feel.

She frowned and switched the channel.

“Jacen?” Static. “Jag?” Static. “Dad?” Static.

With a sigh of frustration, she clipped it back to her belt.

She pushed open the door that led to the fighter bay level.

“Jaina!” she heard a voice call her name and turned.

Jag was running toward her, his flight helmet under one arm.

“Jag!” she replied in relief. “ I tried to reach you on the commlink, but all I got was static.”

“ The satellites are down.” Jag explained as he pulled the hangar door open, motioning Jaina in.

“Sticks!” somebody yelled. “It’s about time you got here! I was about to pull rank and command the Twin Suns myself.”

“Sure you were, Piggy. You can’t even decide what to eat for breakfast, let alone how to command a squadron.” Jaina said sarcastically as she made a force-assisted leap into the cockpit of her x-wing.

“Cappie,” she called to her droid, “ we ready to fly?”

ALL SYSTEMS GO.

“ Good.” She flipped the auxiliary control switch. “ Jag, you have green yet?”

“Yes.” He hesitated for a minute. “Did you find your family?”

“What do you think?” She tried to make her voice light as she finished her system adjustments and switched to Twin Sun ’s comm channel. “Twin Suns check in.”

“Twin Suns two, ready to hunt!”

“Twin Suns Three, all systems go.”

Jaina had to grin. Predictable as ever.

“Twin Suns Four, ready ‘n’ rarin’ to go!”

“Twin Suns Five, let’s rock!”

“Twin Suns Six, my x-wing is hoppin’!”

“Twin Suns Seven, right behind you, leader!”

“Twin Suns Eight, ready!”

“Twin Suns Nine, the Dragon in me is alive and smokin’!”

Jaina grinned. Dreke often earned the nickname “Dragon” for his enthusiasm and name. She keyed her mike. “All right, Twin Suns , let’s get ready to dance!”

A beep let her know there was a message on her datascreen.

ALTHOUGH THE EXPRESSION “DANCE” IS A LOOSE TERM TO DESCRIBE A DEFENSIVE ENGAGEMENT, IT IS WITHIN MY PROGRAMMING TO UNDERSTAND YOUR MEANING AND AGREE. LET’S ROLL!

Jaina just stared at the screen. Maybe it was time to wipe that droid’s memory. When he started substituting clichés for programmed logic, it was all downhill from there.

“Anyway,” she said slowly, “ like I said, move out!”

A chorus of cheers and concurring whoops rang through the comm system.

Jaina activated her repulsorlifts and led her squadron out of the hangar.

“Form up, Suns, it may up to us.” Jaina said cheerfully.

“No kidding.” Kyp said sarcastically. The skies were literally empty.

“ Well, what are we yackin’ for?”

“Yeah!” Twins Suns Eight, 19-year-old Dameon Sel, shouted. “Let them fear the name of the Two Suns!”

Twin Suns ! For goodness sake, Dameon, if you’re going to be so enthusiastic, at least get the name right!”

“Oh. Right.”

“Neg the commclutter, Twin Suns.” Jaina warned.

“As ordered, leader.”

Jaina swung her x-wing around the spire of an unusually high building.

Twin Suns leader , this is control base. Other fighters reporting heavy magnetic repulsion from .9 and on.. Extreme caution advised.”

Jaina switched her comm channel to base frequency. “Leader to base. I got no scope reading, but will do as advised. Leader out.” She switched the channel back to the squadron.

Twin Suns , this is leader, watch for shield repulsion at +.9.”

“Uh, leader how is it that we have enemy fighters swarming the area, but the shield is still up?”

“Not sure, Seven. Ask the techs when we get back. But at least then, when we finish with these guys, it will be over.”

“Right! Quit jabbering and go smash some a-wings!”

“Eight.” Jaina said reproachfully.

“Oh. Right.” Dameon replied meekly.

“ Shielding trios: split up!” Jaina ordered.

The squadron split into groups of two or three and headed after separate targets.

“Kyp, let’s go. C’mon, Jag, try to keep up!” she teased.

“ If you take the moment to glance out your cockpit viewport, you’ll see that it is I that is leading and you who are following.” Jag said.

Jaina’s eyes flew to her forward viewport just in time to see Jag’s clawfighter’s wings dip in greeting.

“Cute, Jag. Real cute.” She muttered.

She heard a chuckle. “Well, Jaina,” Kyp’s voice was amused, “occasionally you ask for it.”

Jaina growled in irritation. “Bite your tongue, Kyp. Just bite your tongue.”

“Approaching first target.” Jag said matter of factly.

Jaina turned her attention to her attention to her display.

Two a-wings were attempting to flee, dumping titanium bombs on Coruscant’s surface. She clenched her teeth and boosted her speed.

She reached out to Kyp through the force and felt him connect with her.

She wasn’t sure which a-wing they were firing at until her finger was already squeezing the trigger.

The two shots ripped through the fuselage a couple hundredths of a second apart, followed by Jag’s less than a second later.

Jaina coolly watched the burning fighter spiral out of control and plummet to the planet surface.

“One down, one to go.”

Before she could reach out to Kyp, she felt the connection become real again. Her finger tensed, and their shots reduced the second fighter to another hulk of falling rubble.

Jaina swung her x-wing around and headed toward the center of the city.

“C’mon. We’re not finished yet.”

I thought it was good. I can see that I need to read more about the kids of Luke and Leia. I sure am missing something by not keeping up with my EU need to get more of the NJO books and others. Thats how good this story is.

NEW POST!!!!!! Enjoy!!
---------------------------------------------

Jacen watched the tactical display, knowing one of the little gold blips zipping all over the screen was his sister.
“Jacen!” his mother called.
Jacen looked up. Leia gestured for him to come.
He stood and crossed the room quickly.
“You delivered the datacard to the chief of state?” she asked quietly.
Jacen nodded. “He has several code and encryption officers looking for an operation code now.”
Leia shook her head. “ I hope they can crack something more complex than a binary code.” She muttered.
Jacen smiled. “Well, I saw Ghent in there, so I think they’ll be fine.”
Leia nodded, then sobered. “We’ve pinpointed the command ship. Do you think there is any way you can search the Admiral?”
Jacen blinked. He had not thought of that possibility.
“I don’t know.” He said slowly. “I could try, but I don’t know if I can reach that far…”
Leia tried to keep the hopeful look off her face. “Try. Please.”
Jacen stared at the blip on his display a moment before closing his eyes and concentrating on the far away ship.
He sensed a sea of fear and uncertainty, but amid all the doubts, one point of utter calm and confidence stood out.
That’s him. He realized. The cool hard determination and emotionless satisfaction were going to be difficult wall to get through.
He stretched out even further, drawing on the force in his surroundings.
And gasped.

_____________

Tezira stood an the bridge of her command ship, the Aurora, watching her newly trained fleet wreak havoc in the New Republic fleet. The ROTS was working beautifully. The New Republic was probably frantic trying to figure out how someone else was controlling their shield. Actually, a team of infiltrators had disabled the shield a couple days before. Because the shield techs only used external sensors to monitor shield readings, they had picked up the magnetic repulsion from ROTS unit and the computer showed that the shield was working fine.
By using the ROTS unit, she could control the traffic coming in or out of Coruscant, crating an effective blockade.
“Admiral. A transmission from the Nova.” One of her communications crew told her.
“Five inches sub-eyelevel display.” She commanded. She enjoyed looking down on her officers.
A moment later, one of her captains materialized into a floating holo.
“Admiral,” he oozed, “your magnificent strategy has been wondrous—”
“Get to the point, Gestad.” She interrupted.
His nervousness surfaced for a moment, before the emotionless demeanor befitting a captain resumed. “Requesting permission to launch a platoon for the planet surface.”
She opened her mouth to speak—
And was nearly knocked off her feet by a wave of emotion.
She felt that she was sinking, with no idea as to which way was up. Not that she cared; she could float, suspended in the warm, golden liquid forever and never need a breath. Warm arms encircled her, holding her close. Light glittered through the water and shone on her face, the glow chasing away all darkness from her. She was going to suffocate; she had to get out. But with every second, she became more attached to the sense. It felt so— right. She saw something out of the corner of her eye and reached for it.
Just as the connection was broken.
She bent over, breathing heavily, a lonely ache filling her, consuming her. It was impossible. There was no way it could be. She had felt that connection a long time ago…
She had watched Drayken die, see the look of pain and pleading in his eyes. Stared numbly as his murderers poked and prodded his lifeless body.
But if he were dead, where was that sensation from? He was the only one she had ever the connection with. What if…
She broke off that thought quickly. There was no way he was still alive.
“Ready the infiltrator.” She ordered a concerned but fearful looking guard nearby.
“Admiral?” he asked incredulously.
“ Do not question me.” She snapped coldly.
The guard ran off to do as he asked.
“Captain.” She said turning back to the holo. “You are now in charge of the fleet. I want every vessel to report unharmed when I return.”
“Yes, Admiral.” He said, inclining his head respectfully.
She turned back to the wide viewport, her mind once again calm. A stray thought fluttered through her head.
Drayken is alive. A voice whispered.
If he is, I will find him. She
vowed.

---------------------------------------------

Jacen walked quickly towards the speeder garage. After the ordeal of trying to gain a mental advantage over the Admiral, his mother had suggested that he take a break from the schematics computers. He figured helping with the evacuation efforts was not the break she had meant, but it bothered him to be idle, and he wasn’t all that exhausted.
“Jacen!” a voice called out.
He turned to see a hooded figure moving quickly toward him. He frowned, vaguely recognizing the voice, but not the being that went with it.
The figure stopped beside him and pulled back the hood that had concealed her features.
“Tenel Ka!” he exclaimed when he saw her face. “I thought you were off planet.”
She smiled soberly and began walking slowly. “No. We were delayed and were told that all civilian aircraft has been banned until further notice. In the mean time, we’re setting up an evac center.”
Jacen walked beside her. “ I imagine Isan is unhappy about the whole deal.”
Tenel Ka nodded. “He is. But He can do little about it. Besides, he is not half as livid as Ta’a Chume.”
Jacen nodded in understanding. “ Has she caused much trouble?”
Tenel Ka smiled. “Other than threatening to usurp my authority as Queen Mother, reinstate the powers to herself ‘for emergency reasons’ and withdraw our alliance to the New Republic, no.”
“Ah. Aha.”
Tenel Ka looked at him. “Since what time have you begun to pick up on my speech habits?”
Jacen grinned sheepishly. “I’m not sure.”
“Well, I do not mind, but it is not you.”
They turned the corner to the garage. Jacen accessed the door with his security code.
“Hop in.” Jacen said, quickly selecting a six-man speeder.
Tenel Ka did just that, agilely jumping over the side of the speeder and landing in the front passenger seat.
Jacen just looked at her as he opened the door on his side and slowly climbed in.
“What parts of the city are being evacuated?” he asked as they whipped through the streets.
High-upper and lower-middle levels.”
“Which also means the lower levels the authorities don’t know about.” He surmised. “Hang on.” He nearly flipped the speeder over looping under the lower-middle level street.
“Do you remember when we used to come down here with your sister and Zekk?” Tenel Ka asked as they traversed through the lower levels of the city.
Jacen slowed slightly. “The times, yeah. The streets and buildings, no.”
“My point exactly. Slow down before you take us to the north pole.”
Jacen pretended to be hurt. “Hey, I’m not that bad about directions.”
“This is not a fact.” Tenel Ka said smugly. “ Turn here.”
Jacen attempted a turn so tight he had trouble not making a fool of himself.
“ This good?” he asked tightly.
Tenel Ka had already jumped out of the speeder and entered one of the buildings.
Jacen climbed out and went into a different one.
When his eyes had adjusted to the dim light, he realized that no matter how many times he came down here, the people’s tenacity always astounded him. Coruscant’s lower levels had been primarily abandoned about the time of the civil wars during the Clone Wars. However, some of the city’s poorest habitants chose to live in clusters in some of the more livable areas.
One of the clusters was housed in the building he now stood in. Most of the privacy walls had been knocked down to form a large common living are. Belongings were in piles against walls in family groups. Tiny food-prep units that appeared to have been cobbled together from cannibalized parts.
Wary-looking people in ragged, mismatched clothing stared at him. A couple of the men had stood up, their hands on their vibroblades or blasters. A woman with short, stringy hair stood close to him, wariness plain in her eyes as she tried to soothe the baby in her arms.
“Emergency has issued as evacuation order for all the lower and middle levels.” He said calmly, using the Force to make himself heard in the furthest parts of the room. “ You have five minutes to get anything you carry and be out of the building.”
Surprisingly, no one argued.
Jacen met Tenel Ka in the plaza between the buildings.
“I think most of them can walk to the center. Maybe those who can’t will be able to fit in the speeder.”
Tenel Ka nodded. “I do not think they are that determined to remain.”
The two crowds began to file out of the buildings and intermingle.
“If you can walk or you have your own speeder, many of the cruisers in the Ambassadorial ship yards are being turned into evac centers. If you can’t walk and you don’t have another mode of transportation, come get into the speeder.’
A couple of people had land speeders or bikes, and shared them as best they could. Jacen was rounding up stragglers when a ship flashed overhead.
“ That was not a New Republic fighter.” Tenel Ka noted quietly.
Jacen nodded. “Better hurry.”
“Fact.”
A man helping the woman with the baby came up to them.
“Tira here insists on walking,” he said jerking his thumb towards the girl, “but she’s got a bad ankle.”
“ I’ve gotten through worse.” She shot back.
Jacen looked down at her feet. One was in an inflatable splint like you got out of a med kit.
“I think it would be in your best interest to ride.” Jacen said slowly.
When he saw her eyes flash, he switched approaches. “It’s cold. Your baby will be more comfortable if you ride.”
The girl began to protest, then her demeanor softened. “Alright. As long as I’m not taking anybody else’s seat.”
Jacen smiled. “Don’t worry. I promise you won’t have—”
A blaster shot zinged by his head and ricocheted off the close buildings. He heard screams as the evacuees scrambled for cover.
Jacen whirled, his lightsaber already ignited in his hands. A part of his mind was aware that Tenel Ka had unclipped her own, and stood beside him, her amethyst blade blazing.
Jacen worked hard to deflect the barrage of bolts from the unseen enemy. He noticed that very few of the shots came anywhere near him. Most of them were directed at Tenel Ka or the evacuees.
“Go,” he told Tenel Ka as he worked his way over to cover her. Tenel Ka looked at up at him.
“No, Jacen, I—”
“Just go.” Jacen repeated, his eyes on the source of the blasterfire.
Tenel Ka realized that there was no use arguing. She turned and ran to the speeder.

Tezira saw the redheaded woman run to the speeder and smiled. It would be much easier to take the boy if he was alone, though he had proved himself quite adept at fighting in a disadvantaged ratio.
“Don’t kill him.” She ordered the few troops she had brought with her. “You only need to discourage the others from helping him.”
She watched as the boy blocked the shots with ease, dropping onto one knee to avoid the ones that were harder to block and pivoting his hand to deflect the ones coming straight at him. She knew he was not Drayken. His hair and eyes were too dark, and he had obviously been trained as a Jedi since a very young age, something Drayken had never had the opportunity to do.
Still, he intrigued her. There was just something about him…
“Set your weapons for stun.” She ordered.
