The Armageddon Inheritance

Colin MacIntyre swore.

“Tamman,” he snapped at the tactical officer, “how long does it take you for a hypermissile lock on those damn things?”

“I’m working sir,” Tamman replied, working on the physical console and through his neural link. “But it’s hard for the computer to lock on to something so small and fast.”

Suddenly, Nergal heaved like a shipwrecked galleon as what could only be a gravitonic warhead – the deadly black hole missiles that could crush even the toughest armour like paper – detonated a scant thousand kilometres from her aft quarter, ripping away two of Nergal’s unfired hypertubes.

“I will deal with this Colin,” a new voice said through the mindlink, and a heartbeat later the enemy vessels vanished in flares of light as antimatter warheads slashed home.

“Thanks Dahak,” Colin replied, then willed open another channel. “Jiltanith, how’s our patient?”

“None the worse, your pathetic excuse for piloting non-withstanding,” Jiltanith replied harshly.

“Fine ‘Tanni,” Colin said, confused as to how she could be so reasonable at some times and completely harsh at others. “Dahak, get the main med-bay ready. Jiltanith has a patient, and we need to give him the works.”

The works was Battle Fleet slang for full Imperium enhancements, something rarely given unless needed.

***********************************************************

Darkness.

That was all Anakin Solo could see or feel.

His actions at Mrykr, drawing every particle of force energy he could summon into himself, had shorn Anakin of the tenuous link to the Force, stripping him of powers he’d wielded for longer than he could remember.

And, Anakin thought dryly, it seems to have blinded me as well.

Something soft connected with his cheek, and next second he could see again.

“Are you all right? Is there any side-effects from the surgery I should know about?” a faintly accented female voice inquired.

“Well, aside from the fact that I’d appreciate it if you turned the lights down, no there isn’t anything that I can think of,” Anakin replied.

“Dahak,” the woman said, “dim lighting to fifty percent of normal in main infirmary.”

The lights dimmed, and Anakin found himself able to see normally again.

“Why can’t I see properly?” Anakin asked, “And who are you?”

“I’m Jiltanith, lieutenant commander, Battle Fleet. And as to your eyes, they were very badly burnt when I found you,” the woman – no, Jiltanith, Anakin corrected himself – said, picking a needle up and injecting him with something that dulled the renewed pain at various points on his body. “Even Imperial bio-technics have their limits, and I had to replace your eyes; the damage was too severe for anything to fix. What I just injected you with was a supplement to the bio-technic’s inbuilt painkillers.”

Someone else entered the infirmary, a young man only slightly older than Anakin, with close-cut blonde hair and intense green eyes.

“’Tanni, how is he?” the man said. “Oh yes, lieutenant, I’m Colin MacIntyre, Captain, Dahak, Hull Number One-Seven-Seven-Two-Nine-One. I apologise for dragging you here and drafting you into the Fleet, but it was that or leave you to die.”

Anakin nodded, still confused from waking up out of a near-death state.

“He is, and will be for the foreseeable future, fine,” Jiltanith said, checking the diagnostic panel attached to the IC bed. “I suggest we get the breifing done.”

“Alright,” Colin replied, helping Anakin up. “We’ll get you a uniform lieutenant Solo, and then we can meet the rest of Dahak’s command staff.”

Glad to see you like it _3MD.

BTW, if anyone wants any info on some of the tech, asking is all that's needed.

Here's chapter two. Sorry if it's a bit short though:

The Armageddon Inheritance chapter two

“Let me get this straight,” Anakin said, “you saved me from dying – which I’m very grateful for – and repaired my body, as well as improving it – which I’m again grateful for. And I’m apparently an officer aboard a moon-sized battle station who says he can vaporise a planet several times over, and you’re telling me it is supposedly a defensive weapon? Forgive me for being a bit sceptical.”

“I understand,” Colin replied. “I had a hard time believing what Dahak told me when I was first brought onboard. Still, I’ve seen the results of an Achuultani attack, and they’re coming again, and if the data Dahak’s received from the monitoring stations is correct then the biggest Achuultani invasion yet is headed our way.”

“We need to get to Birhat and find out why the fleet hasn’t responded yet,” Jiltanith said, “because if the Achuultani are as potent as records indicate, then one Utu-class planetoid won’t be enough. Battle fleet must be alerted.”

“It’s agreed then,” Colin stated, “Dahak, set course for the Bia system, maximum burn. Run it up to the iota bands.”

“Yes Colin,” Dahak replied.

The assembled officers left, leaving Colin and Jiltanith in the breifing room.

“How is he?” Colin asked, “Off the record of course.”

“We’re lucky he knows what his name is,” Jiltanith replied. “His long term memory centres were fried when whatever happened to him happened. I could reconstruct them, if the damage wasn’t so bad, but everything considered, I’ll do more damage trying to fix what’s wrong.”

***********************************************************

“Well this is just brilliant,” Colin muttered as the readouts for the Bia system appeared on the holo-tank. There was a lot of wreckage scattered about, although not around Birhat; instead it was around one of the larger planets.

According to Mother, there had been a major battle here less than two days ago, which explained the massive thermal signatures around the former combat zone.

In space, thermal energy didn’t bleed very fast, so it was possible for a wreck to stay warm for weeks on end.

“Mother,” he said, “what was the name of this system before it was lost?”

“Coruscant.” The computer replied, in her singsong contralto.

Tech notes -

Personal weaponry and armour:

Grav guns: Light grav guns are sidearms for an Imperial, but shoulder-fired rifles for a Terra-born or other unenhanced beings. Heavy grav guns are Imperial rifles, and SAWs (Squad Automatic Weapons) for Terra-born. Grav weapons use gravitic impeller coils to accelerate darts comprised of super-hard materials (and in the case of penetrator darts, a core of material denser than depleted uranium) to hypersonic speeds.

Energy guns: Smaller versions of the gravitonic disrupters used on starships, energy guns use a gravitic shear to break apart material on the molecular level. This is invariably fatal to the target, and extremely messy. It's impossible for a Terra-born to carry a normal energy gun, but special cut-down ones exist.

Warp rifle: Warp weapons prodce a translation field which drops the target into hyperspace, where, without the protection afforded by a drive field, it will be destroyed by the energy surges present.

Plasma grenades: Plasma grenades are only used if the commander gving the orders has no concern for the real-estate. Producing a super-hot gas equal in temperature to the core of a sun, plasma grenades ae capable of demolishing most fortifcations.

Warp grenades: Create a ten meter across translation field, with similar effects to the warp rifle.

Nuclear grenades: Matter/antimatter bombs with a yield in the low megaton range, nuclear grenades are weapons of last resort.

Combat armour: A power suit capable of withstanding sustained fire from energy rifles and light grav guns, combat armour relies more on stealth and suppressor fields than actual armour to protect it's wearer.

Armour suits: Jump-suit like body armour, standard Imperial gear is much less effective than combat armour but still capable of providing moderate light grav gun fire.

Jump gear: A backpack that allows for leaps of over a mile, or three hundred meter up jumps.

I'll be typing up the starship tech notes later. wink
