Title:
The Lady Wore Black
Timeframe:
NJO –
Dark Journey
AU
Characters:
Jagged Fel, Jaina Solo, (w./ Kyp, Tenel Ka)
Genre:
song fic
Summary:
One interpretation of what might have happened if Ta'a Chume hadn't interrupted Jag and Jaina
Notes:
I really tried to ignore this twisted little plot bunny because I didn’t think that I could pull it off . . . but the darn thing just wouldn’t go away until I tried it. Hopefully I was able to make it at least somewhat believable. Anyway, the song is
The Lady Wore Black
by Queensryche, and with apologies for playing in Elaine Cunningham’s little corner of the flanneled one’s sandbox . . . here it is. (Oh, and get comfy: it’s kinda long.)
The Lady Wore Black
They emerged into the empty hallway, hand-in-hand; the sound of music now muted as the door clicked shut behind them. Jaina giggled as she twirled to face Jag, her hand still firmly clasped in his.
"Which way, milady?" he inquired, grinning so widely he thought he must look like a fair-haired fool . . . and, to his surprise, that thought didn't bother him. Too many unfamiliar yet wonderful emotions were swelling up inside to care about anything else.
"I hear that the trophy room is at the end of this hall," she whispered conspiratorially before turning and sprinting down the hallway as fast as her confining dress and high heels would allow, tugging Jag along behind her.
“I think this is it,” Jaina said as she stopped in front of the door at the end of the hallway.
Jag opened the door then bowed deeply, one hand sweeping toward the threshold. “Ladies first.”
“Why, thank you, Colonel Fel,” she said as she curtsied then stepped through the doorway.
Jag shook his head in amusement then followed her inside. Gently, he closed the door then slowly turned around. All conscious thought fled his mind and even the involuntary reflex to breathe failed him for a few thundering heartbeats at the sight before him. Jaina stood a few steps into the room, bathed in the soft glow of a swath of moonlight that streamed in through the large windows, giving her an almost ethereal glow.
Without even consciously thinking about what he was doing, Jag closed the distance between them. He placed his hands on her waist and pulled her against him as she slipped her arms around his neck. Time seemed to move in slow motion as he bent his head down to touch his lips to hers in the most exquisite kiss he could have ever have imagined.
Abruptly, Jaina pulled back, and in the dim light Jag could see a look of cold fury in her eyes. As his mind whirled trying to fathom what he could have possibly done wrong, the door burst open and the lights came up to full illumination, blinding him momentarily.
"Durron, what in the Corellian Hells do you think you're doing?" Jaina growled out through gritted teeth as she disentangled herself from Jag's embrace.
Jag spun around; his eyes were adjusted enough to the harsh light to see Kyp standing in the doorway with his arms folded across his chest, his eyes roaming suggestively up and down Jaina's body.
"I could ask you the same thing, but it's blatantly obvious what
you're
doing," he said sarcastically.
A spike of anger shot through Jag and he took a step forward only to be stayed by Jaina's hand grasping his arm.
"Jag, don't. He's not worth it." She let go of his arm and turned her attention back to Kyp. "I'll ask you again, Kyp. What are you doing?"
He arched an eyebrow. "Don't you have somewhere to be right now?"
Jaina linked her arm though Jag's. "Yes I do. Right here."
"Try again. Your brother's funeral," Kyp said pointedly.
Shocked, Jag glanced down at Jaina. It was surprising enough to him that she would choose not to lean on her family at a time like this; the notion that she would try to avoid her brother's memorial service was incomprehensible.
Her fury had vanished instantly, replaced instead with an infinite sadness. Jaina looked up at him and asked quietly, "Will you go with me?"
"Of course," Jag replied without hesitating.
On a lonely walk this morning
A light mist in the air
Dark clouds laughing at me in silence
Casting shadows through my hair
The early morning mist gave a fuzzy, almost dream-like quality to the landscape as Jag walked through a wooded park. Sleep had been elusive last night. He hoped that a long walk would help him clear his thoughts before taking his squadron on patrol later this morning.
He had always prided himself on his carefully calculated approach to any situation. Every word, every action was meticulously thought out; every consequence was carefully analyzed. Jag found little in his behavior last night that could be described in such a manner. It troubled him that, somehow in the span of one evening, one woman had led him to abandon such an integral facet of his reality.
But then, not every woman was Jaina Solo.
His physical attraction to her was obvious and undeniable. He must have replayed their kiss in his mind a thousand times, savoring every minute detail. It was the events of the rest of the evening, however, that kept him awake and sent him out into the misty, overcast morning searching for answers. After escorting her to her brother’s funeral and watching her struggle to keep her grief locked up where no one could see, Jag began to realize that his feelings for Jaina ran much deeper than he thought possible.
Reaching the edge of a clearing, he stumbled to a stop.
In the distance I saw a woman
Dressed in black with eyes of gray
She wore her pain like a shackled spirit
Eternal life was her debt to pay
Jaina sat on a bench with her hands folded in her lap; her gaze was directed up at the steely gray clouds overhead, but he suspected that her thoughts were much further away. In a stark contrast to the stunning red gown that she wore last evening, she was now clothed in a simple black tunic and pants. Jag wore the color often, even when not in uniform, but somehow on Jaina it looked . . . his mind groped for the right word.
Unsettling
, he decided.
As he began walking again, he ran through a number of things to say to her, summarily rejecting each one in turn. When he reached his destination, he opted for sitting silently beside her, hoping that would be enough to convey his concern and willingness to help while allowing her to grieve in her own way.
She sat for a long moment never showing any outward sign that acknowledged his presence, but Jag knew that she was well aware that he was there. He wished there were some way that he could help free her from her self-made prison. He knew firsthand the desire to be alone with your grief, but he also knew the release of being able to share it with someone who cared.
As if she had picked up on his thoughts, Jaina turned her head to look directly at him. The gray clouds hovering overhead were reflected in the tears that shimmered in her eyes. As if the wall she had built around her emotions had developed a crack, those tears began spilling down her cheeks. Jag took that as a cue to draw her into his embrace, and he could feel warm moisture of her tears soaking into the thin material of his shirt.
“They’re gone, but I’m still here,” she murmured into his chest.
He knew the feeling all too well, and it shattered his heart into a million pieces to think that she had to experience it. Any resistance he had left to his feelings for Jaina evaporated in that instant. Jag knew that he would do anything to take away her pain.
The lady wore black
It's the sign of all prisoners' lives
The lady wore black
I see the years through the tears in her eyes
The lady wore black
Her mystic power calls to me
The lady wore black
Jag walked up the ramp of the Yuuzhan Vong frigate, where he was told he would find Jaina, his pace slowing with each successive step until he reached the top. He lightly trailed the fingers of one hand across the rough surface, amazed that this ship, which looked and felt more like an asteroid, was actually
alive
. Shaking his head to snap himself out of his reverie, he cautiously tapped on the hull.
After a moment, Jaina burst into the doorway, her annoyance at being interrupted clearly evidenced by her dark scowl. When she recognized the source of her interruption, her expression softened. "Oh. Hi, Jag. What brings you by?"
"I came to see how you were doing."
She smiled playfully at him. "Checking up on me?"
He felt a small smile tug at the corners of his mouth. "Something like that."
Jaina paused briefly, appearing to consider how to answer him. For just a moment, tears glistened in her eyes. She blinked, and, as if she had slammed down a hatch to lock her pain away, they were gone. "I'm fine. You said earlier that you were going to try to recruit some more pilots for your squadron after patrols this morning. How is that coming?”
Jag noted her quick evasion, but decided not to push. “I was able two find two more pilots today.”
“Sounds like you’ll have that squadron filled out in no time.”
An idea popped into his mind, and Jag acted on it immediately. “There are still a few slots open. I would be honored if a pilot of your skills were to join Vanguard Squadron.”
That elicited a small smile from Jaina. “Thank you for the offer," she paused to pat the hull of the frigate, “but I’m a little busy making a few adjustments to this baby.”
“I see,” he said, careful not to let his disappointment show.
Jaina lightly touched a hand to his arm. "Actually, I'm glad you stopped by. I've been working on some plans, and I could use your expertise. Would you help me?"
There was a troubling light behind her eyes that made Jag wonder if there was more to her seemingly innocent request. The harder he tried to discern what it was, the faster his thoughts dribbled away from him like trying to clutch water in his fist. He frowned in puzzlement, trying to remember what he was questioning. Jaina had asked for his help; what was there to question?
“Of course,” he answered.
Taking him completely by surprise, Jaina wrapped her arms around his neck and pushed up on her tiptoes to capture his lips in a soft kiss that made his head swim.
"What was that for?" Jag asked when he finally found his voice.
She smiled sweetly, but there was a mischievous gleam in her eyes. "That was just my way of saying thank you."
The wind's song whispered a warning
Telling me to beware
Of the quiet shadowed woman and
Her sadness I would share
After he had finished working on his clawcraft, Jag wiped his hands with a rag and then began gathering up his tools. Hearing footsteps approaching, he glanced up and was surprised to find the Hapan Princess walking toward him. He quickly set the rag and tools back down then executed a crisp, formal bow. “Good evening, Your Highness.”
“Good evening, Colonel Fel, but please, call me Tenel Ka.”
“Of course, Tenel Ka. You wish to speak with me?”
She nodded somberly. “I have noticed that you have been spending a considerable amount of time with Jaina of late. I was hoping that you might be able to give me some insight to her current state of mind. I am concerned for her.”
“She has suffered an incredible loss,” Jag agreed.
Her eyes narrowed. “Fact. But that is not what concerns me.”
Jag’s brows furrowed in puzzlement. “I do not understand.”
Tenel Ka paused for a moment, choosing her words carefully. “Ever since returning from Myrkr, Jaina has been closing herself off from everyone. I cannot perceive what direction her thoughts are taking. Feelings such as anger and a desire for vengeance are very dangerous for a Jedi.”
Jag responded quickly, “Jaina has not closed herself off from me, and I can assure you, her thoughts and actions do not fit your description.”
She studied him for a long moment before speaking. “Perhaps I am already too late. If Jaina is traveling down the path that I fear, you will only see what she allows you to see. Nothing more.”
We sat for sometime together in silence
Never speaking in words
Of all the thoughts she spoke with her eyes
And I listened remembering all I heard
Jag awoke with a start, inhaling sharply. Disoriented from making the abrupt transition from the disturbing vision in his dream to reality, he sat up straight in his seat and quickly glanced about, trying to get his bearings. The familiar swirl of hyperspace was the first thing he noticed. He was not in his clawcraft, however; instead he found himself in the copilot’s seat of a Hapan light freighter.
“Jag, are you okay?”
He snapped his head toward the sound of Jaina’s voice. She sat in the pilot’s seat looking at him with concern. Flicking his gaze quickly to the back of the passenger cabin, he saw Lowbacca eagerly working on some small device and Tenel Ka quietly reading information on a datapad. He finally remembered that they were on their way back to Hapes after spending a few days on Gallinore to meet with scientists there.
“Jag?”
He glanced back at Jaina. “Sorry. Bad dream,” he offered.
It was just a dream, wasn’t it?
He had envisioned himself stuffing a man’s almost lifeless body into one of the storage compartments in the hold while Jaina looked on in chillingly satisfied approval. It had seemed so real, though. Jag had the insane urge to check the storage hold just to banish the ridiculous notion from his thoughts.
He noticed that the concerned look on Jaina’s face had changed to one of mild annoyance, as if some little detail was not working out to plan. Jag searched her eyes, trying to fathom her change in mood, hoping to find reassurance to calm his disturbed thoughts.
If Jaina is traveling down the path that I fear, you will only see what she allows you to see. Nothing more
. He glanced quickly at Tenel Ka as her words from a few days ago came back to him.
Jag looked back at Jaina, and immediately he was transfixed by her eyes. Strangely, they were completely black, as if her pupils were dilated to their fullest extent. He felt like he had fallen into those dark pools, and his thoughts seemed to bubble away from him like air from his lungs as he drowned in them.
“Jag, are you awake?” she asked.
Jag blinked once. It seemed like an odd question, but he could not find anything in his short-term memory but the blissful nothingness of sleep. "Yes, I am now. Sorry.”
A strangely satisfied smile spread across her face.
The lady wore black
It's the sign of all prisoners' lives
The lady wore black
I see the years through the tears in her eyes
The lady wore black
Her mystic power calls to me
The lady wore black
“
Colonel
Fel!”
Jag froze in mid stride, scowling as he noted the sarcasm in Kyp’s voice calling out to him from behind. He waited for a few heartbeats, until he was sure his face was once again a calm, emotionless mask, before slowly turning around.
“What exactly do you think you’re doing?” Kyp asked as he stalked the last few steps between himself and Jag.
“I was walking down this corridor, when you interrupted me.”
“Can the comedy, Fel,” Kyp snapped. “You’re sending up pilots in ships that give off the
Trickster’s
signal. That’s practically a suicide mission!”
“I am not obligated to explain our reasoning to you,
Master
Durron,” Jag said, adding a little sarcastic emphasis of his own.
Kyp’s eyes widened with sudden understanding. “
Our
reasoning,” he echoed softly. “I had no idea that Jaina had gone this far; that she would do this to
you
, of all people.”
Jag’s eyes narrowed. “What do you think she is doing to me?”
“Can’t you see that she is using you?”
Kyp couldn’t possibly understand. He hadn’t been there the times when Jaina had opened up to him; he hadn’t seen the tears shimmering in her eyes that acted as a portal to her wounded soul. “She is not using me,” Jag answered coolly. “Anything that I have done to help her, I have done willingly and gladly.”
Kyp laughed derisively. “Okay, I can see I’m wasting my time here. But let me leave you with a parting thought, and see if you can wrap your mind around this: that innocent, wounded young woman that you are hopelessly in love with is
Darth Vader’s granddaughter
. And she has all the potential to make her grandpa proud.”
The words she spoke were of forgotten lives
And of all knowledge gained
Memories I had but didn't know why
With a smile she explained
Having finished his power-down checklist, Jag slowly removed his helmet, placed it behind his seat, then briefly closed his eyes and let out a long, drawn-out breath. A horrible realization had come to him in the midst of the fight, and he had forced himself to push it from his thoughts until the battle was over. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Jaina approaching his clawcraft. With a growing sense of dread, he unfastened his harness, popped open the canopy, then leapt gracefully to the hangar floor.
Jaina flung her arms around his neck and squeezed tightly. “We did it,” she murmured as she trailed kisses along his neck.
Repulsed, Jag pried himself out of her embrace and took a step backward. He met her astonished stare with a cold, hard gaze. “You killed him,” he accused.
“What are you talking about?”
“Kyp.”
She sighed distractedly and glanced away. “That was a disappointing loss. He could have been such a powerful ally.” Jaina turned her attention back to Jag, a predatory smile creeping across her face. “But I did no such thing. He willingly sacrificed himself to save me. Isn’t it amazing just how far some people will go to help me?”
Her words chilled Jag to the bone. “What do you mean by that?” he asked hoarsely, already surmising the answer.
Still smiling wickedly, Jaina proceeded to tell him in great detail everything he had done for her.
I should have listened to the wind's cold warning
And walked the other way
She touched my soul and now I bear her sentence
But for her love I gladly pay
Jag felt nauseous. Words Tenel Ka and Kyp had spoken earlier echoed over and over in his head, mocking him . . .
you will only see what she allows you to see . . .can’t you see that she is using you
. . . Jag looked at Jaina, his eyes wide in horror. What had happened to the woman he had fallen in love with?
Involuntarily, he took a step backward from her. Jaina closed the distance between them once again, her eyes solidly locked onto his. His thoughts became muddled, so he closed his eyes, hoping that would help him retain his focus. It didn’t work. He couldn't think; it felt like his brain was suffocating. Desperately, he tried to pierce the thick fog surrounding his thoughts. The effort caused pain to knife through his skull, and Jag clutched his head in his hands as he cried out in agony.
What is she
doing
to me?
Dropping his hands to his sides and gasping for breath, he looked at Jaina, his eyes pleading for her to make it stop. Her dark eyes cut through to him like a bright light in the darkest night; her soft, full lips beckoned him, promising a safe haven from the storm. Like a drowning man grabbing a lifeline, Jag crushed her body to his and devoured her lips in a needy, urgent kiss. The physical pain and mental confusion drained away as he immersed himself in the pure bliss of their embrace. He would give his very soul to stay in that moment forever.
The lady wore black
It's the sign of all prisoners' lives
The lady wore black
I see the years through the tears in her eyes
The lady wore black
Her mystic power calls to me
The lady wore black
Her love can set me free
Jaina finally broke off the kiss and pulled back just far enough to gaze deep into his eyes. Maybe it was the way the light reflected off of the watery sheen of tears that had suddenly appeared, but for a moment her eyes seemed to be the brandy-brown color he thought he remembered they used to be.
"Jag, please don't fight this," she said softly as she gently trailed her fingertip along his jaw line, “With or without you,” down his neck, “I will have my vengeance,” then across his throat, "I will do what I must . . . please, don't make me make that choice."
Jag blinked in surprise, not at the implied threat, but at the fact that it didn't matter to him. Jaina made it sound like he had a choice in the matter, but Jag now realized that wasn't true; to walk away from her now would be like trying to stop breathing. His destiny was forever entwined with hers and he was powerless to change it.
He leaned down and joined his lips with hers in an act of final surrender, drawing on her strength as he accepted his fate.

Wow...this was like being in a fever. I didn't know what was Jag's dreams or what was his reality, you used this technique very well! Poor Jag, he never could resist Jaina.
Great fic!

Very different in tone from what you've posted before, but the same superb cadence and flow to your writing - it reads

well, the mood was almost tangible, and I loved the subtle, hinted sense of where Jag and Jaya's characters were... and Kyp and TK, for that matter.
No punches pulled, either. Love is blind, and Colonel Jagged Fel is blindly in love with Darth Vader's granddaughter... who remains quietly
human
in a way that defies easy answers...
I'm really not sure what else to say. Except that it was worth the wait...

At least one. I was almost finished with that story I've been working on for months now when this little plot bunny interrupted me. Hopefully I'll get the three scenes I have left to finish done soon.

AH!
That's scary to think that could have happened.
...
And she has all the potential to make her grandpa proud.”
That line sums up the whole thing very well. Its definitely a creepy thought. I'll admit I was curious what would have happened if they found the trophy room... and now I'm sort of glad they didn't.
Nice job.

It's the story that the Han/Jag scene is a part of.

The funny thing is that I sort of backed into it. The lyrics gave me this idea of Jag being pulled in by a Dark Jaina, then the more I thought about it, I could see things snowballing from that point.
Nice job.
Thanks!

True. But in his defense, there was also a whole lot of mind twisting and memory wiping on Jaina's part that helped him along.
A different DJ angle, and I loved it!
Great job,
Scoundrel.
Thank you so much,

I mean it!
[re-reads 'fic to check]
Yep. I mean it.
Top-notch 'fic!
Thanks again! (Still blushing . . .
)
Um, err... no... I'll just... ah, waffle a bit, until I think of something that's actually worth saying...
"

Mwahahaha!
Whetted my apetite for seeing how
Parallels

Working on it!

RE: The Lady Wore Black (DJ AU, J/J song fic)
Taking him completely by surprise, Jaina wrapped her arms around his neck and pushed up on her tiptoes to capture his lips in a soft kiss that made his head swim.
"What was that for?" Jag asked when he finally found his voice.
She smiled sweetly, but there was a mischievous gleam in her eyes. "That was just my way of saying thank you."
Sweet innocent kiss.
And then...
I never imagined Jag as a bad boy.
Very deep, intense J/J long viggie.

I don't think he ever imagined it, either.
Very deep, intense J/J long viggie.
Thank you!

Anything DJ is good by me
Dark or not!
Jag!
How bold!
But then, not every woman was Jaina Solo.
Well said
but somehow on Jaina it looked . . . his mind groped for the right word. Unsettling, he decided.
I liked that part
He knew the feeling all too well, and it shattered his heart into a million pieces to think that she had to experience it. Any resistance he had left to his feelings for Jaina evaporated in that instant. Jag knew that he would do anything to take away her pain.
Uhoh! Not good!
Dark Jag here we come
Repulsed, Jag pried himself out of her embrace and took a step backward. He met her astonished stare with a cold, hard gaze. “You killed him,” he accused.
“What are you talking about?”
“Kyp.”
OMG!
That was a disappointing loss. He could have been such a powerful ally.
Okay understatement of the century.
Isn’t it amazing just how far some people will go to help me?
Um yes it is. Bad Jaina.
He would give his very soul to stay in that moment forever.
It's amazing what some people will do for love - even Jag.
Nice songfic
