	Fluctuations of Fate 2 – Changed Circumstances By jedishellyskywalker Jaina Solo sat in the pilot’s seat of the Millennium Falcon , her father’s beloved ship. Her legs were tucked up beneath her as she gazed out at the blurred lines of hyperspace visible through the cockpit viewport. Jaina felt serene as she sat there. Everything always seemed so simple at times like this, when it was just her at the controls of a ship, and open space. Jaina was more at peace at that moment than she had been for weeks. “Not able to sleep again, sis?” came a voice from the entrance to the cockpit. Jaina smiled at her twin brother as he sank noiselessly into the co-pilot’s chair at her side. Jacen had obviously just awoken; he was still clad in sleep pants and t-shirt, and his hair was a mussed mess. Concern could be seen clearly in Jacen’s chocolate-brown eyes as he intently studied his sister. “Something like that,” Jaina said quietly in response to Jacen’s question. “I sent Dad to get some rest, he could do with it. Besides, I just feel so…so restless, you know?” Jacen nodded. “I know. You miss him, don’t you? It’s like a black hole inside of you. I can feel it. That’s why you’re not sleeping or eating properly.” Jaina closed her eyes for a moment as a lump rose up in her throat. She nodded. “I know it’s stupid,” she began, “I mean, during the war Jag and I were apart more often than not, and sure, I missed him then, but now… I dunno, Jace. It’s different somehow.” Jacen extended his arm, resting a hand on his twin’s shoulder. “How long has it been?” he asked her. “5 weeks, 3 days and about…” Jaina’s eyes flashed to the chrono on her wrist, “8 hours. But it’s not as if I’m counting or anything!” she finished, a touch of the Solo humour shining through her melancholy. Unable to think of a suitable reply to this, Jacen just smiled sympathetically. He wished with all his heart and soul that he could do something to alleviate Jaina’s heartache, but Jacen knew that this matter was beyond him. Since Jagged Fel’s departure for Csilla, the Chiss homeworld, Jaina hadn’t been acting at all like her usual self. To Jacen, Jaina seemed constantly unsettled. This wasn’t the first occasion upon which he had found her awake when she should have been sleeping. Jaina needed rest, as was shown by the pallor of her skin and the dark circles under her eyes. Jacen was starting to worry about her, but acknowledged that Jaina’s troubles were outside his field of expertise. The twins and their parents had spent the past month in the Corporate Sector, along with Luke and Mara Skywalker, and their small son, Ben. Now, they were all headed for the planet of Ossus, where it was planned to re-establish the Jedi Temple that had been lost on Yavin 4 during the recent Vong war. Jacen wasn’t sure where the Force would take him from Ossus, and he was fairly sure that Jaina was equally undecided about her future. Doubtlessly, only time would tell. ***** “I know it doesn’t look like it now, but this was once a stronghold of the Jedi Knights of old,” Luke Skywalker explained to the Solos as they followed their native Ysanna guide from the makeshift landing field where both the Millennium Falcon and the Jade Shadow had set down. “There has to be so much knowledge here in the ruins of the Jedi library, just waiting to be discovered!” Mara nodded in agreement, then spoke to her son, who was squirming in her arms. “It’s okay, Ben. Settle down. We’ll be at the camp soon, and then we’ll see Kam and Tionne again.” Jaina smiled at the grin that blossomed on her cousin’s face at this. For much of the time since his birth, Ben Skywalker had been entrusted to the care of Jedi Master Kam Solusar and his silver-haired wife, Tionne. Although the couple had taken wonderful care of Ben, Jaina knew that leaving the boy with them had been indescribably difficult for Luke and Mara to bear. “We will be at the camp soon, right?” asked Han Solo. “I mean, this forest is picturesque an’ all, but we’ve had a long journey.” “Yes, it’s not far now,” assured their guide. “Very soon we shall reach your camp and you shall see what progress has been made.” The Ysanna was right. Within 10 minutes the group had reached a broad field just beyond the boundaries of the forest. There were several large, single-storied prefabricated buildings, as well as a greater number of smaller prefabs. There were also lots of small tents scattered throughout the field. After indicating the closest of the large prefabs their guide departed, leaving the Solos and Skywalkers to announce themselves. “Welcome, welcome!” cried Kam, when he opened the door. “Please, won’t you come inside?” They all followed him as he led the way down a corridor into a large room. None of them noticed the sparseness of the chamber they had just entered, what with all the reunions taking place. At the sight of the tall, slender human woman rising from her seat, Ben wriggled out of Mara’s grip and ran over to Tionne, a huge smile on his face. Through the Force all the Jedi present could feel the small boy’s joy at being reunited with his carer once more. Tionne swept Ben up into her arms with practised ease. “My, haven’t you grown!?!” Tionne exclaimed. “I know. It’s incredible how big and strong he’s getting,” Mara said. Tionne’s gaze moved from Ben to take in the adult arrivals. “Oh, I’m sorry!” she said at once, lowering Ben to the ground. “What kind of hostess am I? Welcome all of you. Please, make yourselves comfortable.” They all sat down on the assortment of mismatched chairs that were arranged in a loose circle in the far corner of the room. Over the course of the next hour or so, Kam and his wife gave them a full report on how the reconstruction of the temple was progressing. The team responsible for the work was a mix of Jedi and Galactic Federation of Free Alliances personnel, all of whom were working together on the project. Kam explained that many of the GFFA group had been soldiers during the war, and it was a welcome respite for them to be building things, instead of blowing them up. Jaina could understand those sentiments very well indeed. After almost 5 years of war she too felt the urge to help create a legacy of peace. Once they had finished bringing the others up to date, the Solusars showed the Skywalkers and Solos to the two adjacent small prefabs that would be their temporary homes on Ossus. “We’ll leave you all to get settled in,” Tionne said to the Solos, then withdrew. The Solo family’s new Ossus residence was not large, so it took less than 5 minutes to fully explore it. The prefab consisted of 2 bedrooms, each scarcely spacious enough to fit a pair of bunks; a small living room with a built-in kitchenette; and an even tinier refresher. It wasn’t much, but it was plenty to satisfy the Solos. Han and Leia decided to rest for a few hours, but the twins elected to take a walk around the camp instead. Exiting the prefab, they were just in time to see Ben Skywalker come scampering out of the adjacent building. With a couple of long strides Jacen was at his cousin’s side and swept the boy up into his arms. “And just where do you think you’re going, young man?” Jacen asked him, fixing Ben with a mock-strict glare. Ben just giggled and squirmed to be put back on his feet. Jacen tightened his grip as Luke stuck his head out the door of his quarters. Seeing that Ben was safely in capable hands, his face lost its worried expression and the Jedi Master sighed in relief. “Thanks Jacen," Luke said, preparing to relieve his nephew of his burden. “This young demon decided that he wanted to go and explore, I think!” Jaina smiled, glancing at her twin. “Jace and I had the same idea, Uncle Luke.” “We can take Ben with us on our walk if you’d like,” Jacen offered. “How does that sound?” Luke asked his son. Ben clapped his hands in delight. “I think that’s a yes.” Jaina said laughingly. Luke chuckled. “I think so too. Well, I know Mara and I wouldn’t mind a while to ourselves. It would be nice if you could take Ben off our hands for a bit, if you don’t mind, naturally.” “’Course we don’t mind!” Jacen said immediately. “Yeah,” Jaina put in. “We’ve got the best part of two years’ worth of babysitting duties to catch up on.” Luke grinned boyishly. “You’d do well to be careful, Jaina Solo. I might just take you at your word! Now Ben, you be good for your cousins, or else there’ll be no more going walkies, all right?” Ben nodded. “’Kay,” he said seriously, blue eyes wide. “Well in that case, have fun!” Luke said brightly, turning to head back into the prefab. “Thanks again you two. I’ll do the same for you anytime I’m needed.” “That’ll be quite a while yet, Uncle!” Jaina said, laughing blithely. “Walkies now?” Ben asked hopefully. “Yes, walkies now,” Jacen replied, lowering his cousin to the ground. Jaina took Ben’s left hand and Jacen took his right. 	Great start! Always glad to see well written post-NJo fics. Keep me on the PM list! I want to follow this all the way through. Good beginning, although I wish the Jacen Jaina scene could have been a touch longer-you had something good going there. Also, I think Ben has had a great and in character effect on his parents, whcih is another plus. Great job! -----signature----- God is great, the Lord of all. 	Thanks a mill guys! As always, your feedback is very much appreciated! I'm glad you thought my characterisation of Ben was okay. With kids, I'm never 100% sure whether I make the sound too young/old for their age. As for the Jaina/Jacen scene, perhaps I should have made it slightly longer. (Who knows, I might do a rewrite eventually?!?) The reason I left it the length I did is because I didn't want to start off the story with too much angst, because let me warn you all; This fic basically consists of angst, drama, tears and mush.
