My personal disclaimer: The last section is probably a bit rough, but after endless editing everything sort of becomes a blur. This also got a bit longer than origianlly intended, blame A/T for that lol! My thanks to Tahi for editing the first two sections of this story.

THE OLD WAYS

Anakin Solo stepped out of his ship, the No Krakana, and stretched his aching muscles in the fresh air of Endor. Standing in the shadows off to his right side Kohvrekhar, Anakin’s Noghri bodyguard, kept a sharp eye on the forest around them. Behind him the Yuuzhan Vong Shamed Ones Hruck Rapuung and Kreig Carr were pleased to finally be free of the No Krakana, and in Endor’s more natural environment.

Rapuung and Carr were both members of Anakin’s Shamed Ones honor guard and pledged to die for him if need be. Needless to say, Anakin was not the least bit comfortable with this arrangement, but there was nothing to be done about it. Only his mother’s words on the subject of his honor guard had eased his troubled mind. Leia Solo had now lived for decades with Noghri guards and their unwavering devotion to her and her family. Anakin’s mother had told him that these situations, while at times awkward, were more for the guardians than the guarded. The Shamed Ones needed a way to express their gratitude to Anakin for all that he had done for them, and all that he represented. To insist that they should not watch over him would only serve to distress them, and would likely prove futile.

"Take this gesture of respect and admiration with humility, Anakin. The Shamed Ones, like the Noghri and Chewie before them, will not be dissuaded so you might as well learn to live with it." Leia’s words to her youngest son had allowed him to move past his guilt and except his new and constant companions.

"There will be blood spilled in these woods soon, I can feel it." Kreig Carr’s voice was tinged with anticipation as he spoke to Anakin. The former warrior turned Shamed One, roughly rubbed the Plasma Eel wrapped around his right wrist.

Anakin allowed a small chuckle as he turned to face his friend, and guard. "I’d thought that the Force still eluded you, Kreig? Yet now you bring me news that you can feel battle approaching?" He raised a dark questioning eyebrow in the Yuuzhan Vong’s direction as he spoke.

"I did not intend to give that impression, Great One. It was merely a warrior’s instinct at work." Kreig’s deadpan response hinted at mild annoyance.

"I meant no disrespect Kreig Carr, in point of fact I agree with your assessment of our situation. I wish it were not so, but it would seem that battle is in our future. It’s a rare occurrence when the Force calls me any place where a purely diplomatic solution is required. I have always had little skill in, and even less patience for diplomacy than other Jedi." Anakin paused, smiled, and then continued. "I suppose I’m a bit of a throwback of sorts, a Jedi of the old ways you might say."

"You are of the old ways, much like those we came here seeking, Great One." Hruck Rapuung’s words hit home, snapping Anakin’s thoughts back to the task before him.

"The irony of it all is not lost on me, Hruck Rapuung. However, my ways while traditional are still peaceful, unlike those we came here looking for."

"Your point is well made, Great One." Hruck considered himself a warrior and philosopher, but decided now was not the time to push for further debate.

"Forgive me, Great One, but I had thought you considered yourself a new kind of Jeedai?" Kreig Carr cocked his head to the side as he awaited Anakin’s response.

Anakin glanced down at his belt, and the lightsaber that hung on it. The Lambent crystal inside his blade had indeed made Anakin a new kind of Jedi, but... "I am new in my construction but old in my methods, Kreig Carr. I think that is perhaps the best way I can think of to explain my meaning."

If Vua Rapuung could see me now. Anakin shook his head as he considered the path his life had taken, and the company he now kept.

"I see." Thankfully, Kreig Carr did not inquire more and allowed the matter to drop.

"We should be on the move, my Lord. Our presence will soon be detected if we remain here much longer."

"The little killer is right, Great One." Hruck Rapuung glanced at Kohvrekhar, who had just spoken, then back to Anakin.

Anakin nodded his ascent, and then began to lead the foursome deeper into the forest of Endor.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Kneeling on a patch of muddy ground, Anakin inspected the lifeless body of a native Ewok. Shifting his gaze from the body in front of him, Anakin scanned the clearing in which he now found himself. At least a dozen Ewoks were strewn about, and all had clearly suffered very painful deaths. Anakin briefly thanked the Force that he had decided to forgo his usual Jedi robes on this particular mission, as it seemed he would be in need of more protection. Dressed in a simple, brown armored jumpsuit like the one he had worn to Myrkr, Anakin felt better prepared to face the challenges ahead.

"So, they are indeed here, Great One." Kreig Carr’s statement received only a slight nod from Anakin in response.

"Does this mean that our hunt may begin at last, my Lord?" Even without using the Force, Anakin could sense the Noghri’s natural yearnings stirring within him.

"I’m afraid so, Kohvrekhar. The renegades do seem to be here, and they’ve taken innocent lives."

"They will not be able to do so for much longer, Great One," Hruck Rapuung snarled, flexing his left arm as he admired the Amphistaff wrapped around it.

Anakin stood up quickly his face set in a deadly serious expression. "We are here to put an end to renegade hostility, the method by which we do that has yet to be decided upon. If there is any chance to reason with these rogues then that’s what we’ll do, understood?" Anakin allowed his stern gaze to fall briefly on each of his three companions.

Silence was the only reply Anakin received from his comrades, and it satisfied him. Idly, he wondered if perhaps he had been spending just a tad too much time with his older brother of late. Pushing the thought aside with a brief chuckle, Anakin lead the small group still deeper into the forest.

Half an hour later, Anakin’s group came upon what they had all been dreading since the discovery of the Ewok remains. Sitting high above them in the trees were the remnants of an Ewok village, a village that was now being Vong-formed. Where once there had been primitive huts made of wood and other simple materials, now stood brightly colored masses of Yorik coral. Through his electro-binoculars, Anakin could make out a number of Ewok’s with coral implants milling about the shaped village. Sensing a rapidly approaching presence, Anakin lowered his binoculars and turned to face his companions.

A moment later a small bundle of brown fur emerged from the foliage next to them. The coral implant in the side of the creature’s head was a sad reminder of what the ‘old ways’ meant to some. Before Anakin could react, Hruck Rapuung snatched the little creature up in both of his large hands. A sickening snap echoed through the woods as Rapuung twisted the Ewok’s head - as one might the cap on a bottle of Lomin ale. Anakin winced and briefly averted his gaze as the limp body of the enslaved Ewok dropped to the forest floor.

"It will never again be a slave to the old ways." Hruck Rapuung spoke in an even and self-assured tone.

Anakin briefly considered mentioning that the poor creature might well have desired to study its options a bit further before deciding on that particular course, but thought better of it. "Not exactly how I’d choose to be freed from slavery, but I can see your point, Hruck Rapuung."

"Is it not now one with your Force, Great One?" As he had before when asking a question, Kreig Carr inclined his head slightly.

The question posed quite the dilemma, as the Jedi had stated many times over that joining the Force was in fact the highest form of freedom. Having neither the time nor the words to counter that particular argument, Anakin moved on. "We’ll need to get a closer look before deciding what to do here."

"Perhaps that task should fall to me, My Lord?" Kohvrekhar, like all Noghri, was a master of stealth and infiltration.

Anakin’s brow furrowed in thought as he contemplated his next move, and Kohvrekhar’s suggestion. "Alright, Kohvrekhar. Remember, stick to the shadows and as the old saying goes - be quick but don’t hurry."

Kohvrekhar nodded his understanding, and then silently slipped into the brush and disappeared.

Time passed slowly for Anakin, Hruck Rapuung and Kreig Carr, but pass it did. Roughly an hour later, Kohvrekhar emerged from the brush gasping for breath.

"Are you alright, Kohvrekhar?" Anakin’s voice was thick with worry at the sight of Kohvrekhar’s frantic appearance.

"The scar... the Yuuzhan Vong have this place well fortified, My Lord. I was not able to discover the identity of the enemy commander, but..." Kohvrekhar’s words trailed off, but Anakin could feel a deep sadness radiating from his Noghri friend.

Anakin placed a comforting hand on Kohvrekhar’s right shoulder as he spoke. "But what, Kohvrekhar? What is it that’s troubling you? You found something, unexpected, something out of place?" Anakin searched for the right words to unlock the Noghri’s revelation, whatever it was to be.

"Basbakahn...Basbakahn is here, now, in this place. The Yuuzhan Vong have...have enslaved him, My Lord."

Anakin knew that his mother’s former Noghri guard, Basbakahn, and his own guard, Kohvrekhar, had never met in person, but the story was well known. Basbakahn been captured on Duro as he fought to protect the life of Anakin’s mother, Leia Organa Solo. "Are you sure it’s him, Kohvrekhar?"

"I have met many of his clan brothers since joining you, My Lord, and their scent is strong on him." Kohvrekhar’s words were filled with sorrow and rage as he answered his Master.

"I’m sorry, Kohvrekhar, there has been too much of this kind of tragedy since the Yuuzhan Vong first began their invasion."

"That is true, Great One. But the little killer can rest assured that those responsible for this shameful act will know retribution." Hruck Rapuung’s voice was a low growl when he spoke, a growl that signified his own thirst for battle.

The elder of Anakin’s two Shamed guards by nearly a dozen years, Hruck Rapuung’s eyes danced at his ability to label the acts of those once believed superior to him as ‘shameful.’ Anakin was a bit taken aback by the vicious gleam he could clearly see in Hruck’s eyes. Considered by Anakin to be the more even-tempered of his guards, Hruck's expression made it clear to all that, though older and wiser, he was no less of a warrior than Kreig Carr.

"Basbakahn was a proud Noghri warrior. His vengeance will come in the form my blade alone." Kohvrekhar growled back his retort in the direction of both Hruck Rapuung and Kreig Carr, as he fingered the hilt of his Noghri blade.

Anakin did not need the Force to sense the rapidly rising tension between the two proud, and at times bloodthirsty, species. He had hoped that by this point, nearly a year into his return, he would have learned how to handle these situations better. It had been ten months since his return and in all that time his two Yuuzhan Vong and one Noghri guard had seldom, if ever, left his side. Anakin almost laughed at the realization that his family, who were some of the most self-sufficient people in the galaxy, had nevertheless amassed a rather large collection of bodyguards. His parents had not only two Noghri guards to contend with, but since the war had ended, not one but two Wookiee companions. Shaking his head, Anakin set his face in a solemn expression before addressing the situation before him.

"I know how much all of you wish to avenge the wrongs of the past, but we have a job to do here. As a Jedi I can’t, and won’t, condone revenge, even if I understand the desire for it...even if I desire it myself," Anakin paused and a lopsided grin appeared on his face before he continued. "Besides, if these renegades are truly intent on keeping to the old ways you won’t have to go seeking revenge, it will find you."

His lopsided grin and conspiratorial demeanor seemed to have the desired effect on his more bloodthirsty companions. Relief washed over Anakin as he watched the posture of both Kohvrekhar and the two Yuuzhan Vong visibly relax. It was not a perfect solution that Anakin had found, but for the time being it was good enough. However, if the Yuuzhan Vong renegades could be convinced to end their aggression peacefully... Anakin’s thoughts trailed off at this point. He would deal with his companions' frustration when and if, it became necessary to do so.

"There is a path through the thicker woods that leads up to the enemy camp. I believe it was not used often by the natives, and has so far remained undiscovered by the renegades. I can lead the way if you are ready to proceed, My Lord?" Relieved that Kohvrekhar’s voice had returned to its professional tone Anakin nodded his agreement, and the foursome set off once again.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

"Sith! Does everything a Solo chooses to get involved in have to turn out like a Tatooine podrace?" Anakin Solo grumbled as Thud bugs came at him from all sides. The purple blade of his lightsaber flashing in wide, defensive arcs, Anakin could feel sweat beading on his forehead. Much more of this and he, and his companions, would be done for. "I guess this is what grandfather would call 'aggressive negotiations,'" Anakin mused aloud.

"I do not believe they are attempting negotiations, Great One." Kreig Carr's deadpan response would have made Anakin chuckle were not the situation so dire.

"I agree with Kreig, Great One, they're intentions seem most hostile," Hruck Rapuung added.

Anakin shook his head at the clearly missed joke as he continued to fend off Thud, and now Razor bug attacks.

It had been half a standard hour since Kohvrekhar had first lead the foursome into the Ewok village, and things had not gone well. How exactly their presence had been detected, Anakin had no clue. But they had been set upon shortly after entering the Ewok's treetop village. Initially, Anakin had tried to lead the renegade Yuuzhan Vong warriors away from the others, but whoever was in charge here was crafty.

Anakin had known that once he was recognized, which too his mild surprise had been almost instantly, he would be the warriors' focus. Using that fact to his advantage, Anakin had split from his three bodyguards, drawing a large contingent of warriors away from his friends. Swinging from vine to vine, he had lead the renegade warriors on a dazzling chase through the Vong-formed village. Soon, however, whoever was leading the renegades had recalled their forces and set about the task of hunting, Kohvrekhar, Hruck, and Kreig. He had desperately wanted to take advantage of his lack of pursuers then by seizing the opportunity to seek out however was leading this uprising. If he could've found the individual responsible, all of this would be over by now. However, the Force had told him that his friends didn't have that kind of time, if he'd abandoned them, even briefly, they would've died.

Now Anakin found himself in the position he disliked most; he was boxed in. True, he had returned in time to save his friends, but now they were backed into a corner, or to be accurate, a hut. The large hut was one of the few Ewok structures that still maintained its original design and materials. Anakin surmised that this hut had, at one time, been a tribal meeting place of some sort.

The sound of metal clashing against metal caused Anakin to briefly avert his gaze from the hut's entrance. Farther inside the hut the lone member of the enemy forces who had found his way inside was battling furiously with Kohvrekhar. Noghri blades met, retreated, then met again as Kohvrekhar and the enslaved Noghri, Basbakahn, battled. He allowed his gaze to travel further to where Kreig and Hruck where working to breach the hut's back wall. He could easily slice open the wall himself with his lightsaber, but then who would keep the warriors at bay? The two Shamed Ones didn't have the skill to deflect Thud and Razor bugs, and didn't possess the armor to absorb much in the way of damage.

"Anytime you're ready would be astral with me, guys," Anakin shouted back to the pair of Shamed Ones.

"The native construction is most substantial, Great One," Hruck Rapuung shot back.

"Wonderful," Anakin snorted as he turned his full attention back to defending the hut's entrance. The fact that he had been able to keep up his defense even while his gaze had been averted stood as a testament to his concentration and remarkable skills with a lightsaber.

All at once the barrage of Thud and Razor bugs stopped, and the sea of warriors parted slowly before his eyes. Anakin's eyes focused on an emerging figure at the back of the pack of renegade warriors. He wore a hooded cape over his Vonduum crab armor, which was a shiny black- in many ways he resembled none other than Darth Vader.

No, Anakin thought, it couldn't be! He was dead, wasn't he? You were dead, or at least believed to be once, another voice in his mind taunted. The sound of someone gasping for breath caused him to turn his gaze from the black-clad figure. Behind him, Kohvrekhar's blade had found it's mark- slicing open Basbakahn's throat. The wounded Noghri lay gasping on the ground for a split second before Kohvrekhar's blade descended on him, ending his enslavement.

By the time Anakin turned back to the warriors, the black-clad figure had vanished from his sight. In his place stood six, short, armorless, bulky warriors wielding larger than normal Amphistaffs. "Slayers," Anakin growled. He knew that not even he could hold off six such powerful warriors by himself, not even long enough for the others to escape, he thought miserably.

"We're nearly through the wall, Great One," Kreig Carr announced proudly.

"Forget it, you two, we're out of time. Ready yourselves, all of you, there are Slayers among them." Anakin's words brought the world of his three companions into crystal clear focus. They couldn't hold off Slayers and regular warriors and still have time to cover an escape, not if they wanted to all get out. They knew that Anakin would settle for nothing less than safety for all.

His purple blade held in a frontal defensive position, Anakin stepped outside the hut. Better to fight on open ground then in the confining hut, he thought. Thankfully the other warriors seemed content to watch and wait for the Slayers to finish the fight. A moment later, Anakin was joined outside by Hruck, Kreig, and Kohvrekhar.

The Slayers began their advance with slow, deliberate steps. For his part, Anakin kept his group stationary. "Save your strength, let them come to us," he said quietly, so as not to be overheard by the advancing warriors.

The lead Slayer had just about reached Anakin when a flash of blue momentarily blinded the young Jedi. When his vision cleared, his eyes went wide with shock as he looked down to see the Slayers lifeless body on the ground before him. The feel of the warriors severed head making contact with his boot brought Anakin back to the moment. His head snapped up just in time for his eyes to catch sight of the flying blue blade return to its owner's waiting hand.

"I could be wrong, but I don't think my niece likes you boys playing so rough with her husband." Seated with her legs dangling over the edge of the roof of a nearby hut; Mara Jade Skywalker was barely able to contain her smile as she appraised the stunned expressions of the various Yuuzhan Vong warriors.

"Ya, I usually like to save that stuff for myself," Tahiri replied while wearing a rather adult grin. At this, Mara burst out laughing, while Anakin, himself stunned, managed to blush a deep crimson.

When he recovered himself, Anakin added, "not that it isn't great to see you two, but um we're still a little outnumbered here."

Tahiri and Mara shared an exasperated glance, then, to Anakin's shock, Tahiri deactivated her saber and replaced it on her belt. "You know, I should just leave him like this," Tahiri said to Mara in an annoyed tone.

Mara paused before responding, her head half turned behind her, but why Anakin couldn't tell. "You're right of course," Mara began, still not looking at either Tahiri or Anakin. "Don't you think so, Tahiri?" Now Mara was looking down at her niece.

"Hmm," was all Tahiri said in reply.

"I said you agree," Mara began again. When Tahiri turned her gaze from Anakin back to Mara, the older woman continued. " You agree don't you; his lack of faith is disturbing?"

"Absolutely," Tahiri affirmed without hesitation.

The previously stunned Vong warriors found the banter irritating, and several began to quickly advance on Anakin's small group. However, no sooner had they taken their first steps towards Anakin then they were cut down by a hail of blaster fire. The other warriors, and Anakin's group, quickly searched for the source of the blaster fire.

Slowly emerging from various locations in the surrounding trees were camouflaged members of the Alliance military, most of them human. Anakin shook his head- he should have guessed. Off to Anakin's right side, a loud Wookie roar erupted, and he turned accordingly. Standing with a group of eight soldiers was a tall, very broad shouldered, black-furred Wookie who was all too familiar to Anakin- General Shorbecca.

Adorned in traditional Wookie battle armor that covered much of his massive chest and broad shoulders, General Shorbecca was a sight to behold. His name, translated in basic to "fierce defender," and it fit him well.

Anakin could feel Tahiri's eyes on him and turned towards her mumbling a simple, "oh."

Soon enough, the renegade Yuuzhan Vong population of Endor was rounded up and placed under arrest by General Shorbecca's forces. Still, even though things had ended with far less violence than Anakin had expected, he felt more than a little uneasy. The Force was whispering to him, sending waves of warning his way. Something dark was looming- he could feel it.

"What's the matter, Dummy? We did good here today, don't you agree? I mean we stopped the renegades, everyone's safe, and only a handful of Yuuzhan Vong were killed- not a bad day's work if you ask me." Tahiri paused to wrap her arms around Anakin from behind, but surprisingly he pulled away.

"Tahiri," Anakin began only to be cut off by his startled, and slightly offended wife.

"What is with you, Anakin? You're not actually miffed that Mara and I showed up here, are you? If I have a vision of my husband in danger again do you expect me to just ignore it so you can preserve your hero-boy reputation?"

"No, of course not, Tahiri. It's nothing like that at all, it's just...did Shorbecca's men find the camp Commander?"

"What's left of him; he committed suicide rather than submit to arrest by the Alliance- coward."

Anakin let out a breath he hadn't realized he had been holding, but he still had to be sure. "Dark, hooded cape, shiny, black armor?"

"What? No, nothing like that. Why? He was Just your typical mid-level warrior, but all the other warriors identified him as their Commander. He controlled this group alright, no doubt about it, and yes, the Force does tell me that."

Anakin smiled and before Tahiri could react, he swooped in for a kiss. It was a long, passionate kiss that effectively scattered all Tahiri's previous thoughts. When their lungs finally ran out of oxygen, Anakin pulled away leaving Tahiri blinking and trembling before him.

Placing a callused hand on her soft cheek, Anakin spoke gently. "I guess everything that happened just overloaded my circuits a bit. Anyway, I'm going to collect myself for a minute. Why don't you go find Shorbecca; tell him to break out whatever toxic alcoholic substance he's got stashed away this time. I'll be along in a minute and the three of us will catch up, oh and Aunt Mara too of course."

"All right, hero-boy, and maybe later we'll see if we can find an unoccupied hut." She gave Anakin her most seductive smile. "After all, you know what primitive living does to the Yuuzhan Vong in me."

Anakin smiled and bid her to leave him, adding, "I won't be long," as he watched her retreating form. Turning around, Anakin rested his hands on the wooden railing and stared out at the now orange sky. Night was falling on Endor, and the frown that had reappeared on Anakin's face was evidence that despite how he had just been acting, he felt darkness was on the horizon of more than just the Sanctuary moon.

THE END.

Marvellous OCs as usual, JD. It's good to see Kohkrevhar again. You write the characters so well in both dialogue and mannerisms. happy

Of course it was good to see Anakin as leader, and the ending was great. happy

Oh my! As you know, I'm a big fan of your OC's and characterization in general, so that's quite flattering. Thank you very much. grin

Of course it was good to see Anakin as leader, and the ending was great.

It's tricky trying to write Anakin post-SBS as there isn't much to go on. Even in SBS he's not exactly the best leader until he's almost dead. cry I liked the ending too, it was one of those scenes that just wrote itself.

Wow! I really like this one! Unlike many long stories, this had a constant, easy flow, with not too much action, and the right bit of romance. The paragraphs were perfect in length, but I don't want to analyze the darn thing to death, so I'll say what I said before:I loved it! grin

How did I miss this?

Only his mother’s words on the subject of his honor guard had eased his troubled mind. Leia Solo had now lived for decades with Noghri guards and their unwavering devotion to her and her family. Anakin’s mother had told him that these situations, while at times awkward, were more for the guardians than the guarded. The Shamed Ones needed a way to express their gratitude to Anakin for all that he had done for them, and all that he represented. To insist that they should not watch over him would only serve to distress them, and would likely prove futile.

Good comparison, and very true. Refusing help can be insultng sometimes.

"I suppose I’m a bit of a throwback of sorts, a Jedi of the old ways you might say."

Interesting thinking I'd never given that much thought...

Anakin inspected the lifeless body of a native Ewok.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO cry

Idly, he wondered if perhaps he had been spending just a tad too much time with his older brother of late.

tongue

Through his electro-binoculars, Anakin could make out a number of Ewok’s with coral implants milling about the shaped village. Sensing a rapidly approaching presence, Anakin lowered his binoculars and turned to face his companions

Why? cry Why the Ewoks? Why not the Gungans?

He wore a hooded cape over his Vonduum crab armor, which was a shiny black- in many ways he resembled none other than Darth Vader.

shock

"I could be wrong, but I don't think my niece likes you boys playing so rough with her husband." Seated with her legs dangling over the edge of the roof of a nearby hut; Mara Jade Skywalker was barely able to contain her smile as she appraised the stunned expressions of the various Yuuzhan Vong warriors.
"Ya, I usually like to save that stuff for myself," Tahiri replied while wearing a rather adult grin. At this, Mara burst out laughing, while Anakin, himself stunned, managed to blush a deep crimson.

cool All right! Reinforcements are here, and they're the best ones wink

- General Shorbecca.

I like the way you bring the same OC's in grin

Anakin smiled and before Tahiri could react, he swooped in for a kiss. It was a long, passionate kiss that effectively scattered all Tahiri's previous thoughts. When their lungs finally ran out of oxygen, Anakin pulled away leaving Tahiri blinking and trembling before him.

Awww love

"All right, hero-boy, and maybe later we'll see if we can find an unoccupied hut." She gave Anakin her most seductive smile. "After all, you know what primitive living does to the Yuuzhan Vong in me."

Great post. Very dark, especially seeing all the dead and enslaved Ewoks, but I loved the way Mara and Tahiri came to the rescue. I really enjoyed this story, nice work, JDH3 happy

Awesome story! The OC's were interesting, and I'm very curious about this Vader-ish looking person. Tahiri's and Mara's entrance seemed like something they would do. laugh

Wow, thank you very much. blush Yeah, the dead Ewoks certainly equal darkness. cry But all ended pretty well, save for Anakin’s thoughts at the end...

dancing That’s very nice of you to say, thanks! happy Glad Tahiri and Mara seemed natural as that was my favorite scene of the ‘fic.
