Title: Betrayals
Timeframe: post-NJO
Characters: Jagged Fel, Jaina Solo, Dejhira Blue
Summary: On assignment to investigate the disappearance of a Chiss Intelligence Operative, Jag encounters much more than he ever bargained for.
Notes: Well, after months and months of dragging each sentence kicking and screaming out of my skull . . . here is my first attempt at a longer ‘fic. The Han/Jag viggie I’ve posted previously is the first scene. If you’ve already read it and don’t want to read it again, just skip to the next scene break; the only change that I’ve made to it was giving Han one more line of dialogue near the end. The usual disclaimers apply – Dejhira is mine, everything else belongs to GL, etc . . . Okay, I’m done babbling now . . . here we go!

Dramatis Personae

Dejhira Blue; Colonel (female human)
Kyp Durron; Jedi Master (male human)
Jagged Fel; Chiss Liaison to the Galactic Alliance (male human)
Dif Scaur; former Director of the NRI (male human)
Han Solo; Captain, Millienium Falcon (male human)
Jaina Solo; Jedi Knight; Rogue Leader (female human)
Leia Organa Solo; former NR diplomat (female human)

Betrayals

A small smile crept across Jagged Fel’s face as he spotted the Millennium Falcon across the hangar. So it is true; Han and Leia are here, he thought. His smile grew wider with every stride that brought him closer to the ship. The thought of even the tiniest connection to Jaina, even something as simple as a conversation with her parents, lifted Jag’s spirits. He missed her terribly. Jag mentally chuckled; that was understating things by a wide margin. He had hoped that over the years, their long separations would be easier to bear. They weren’t.

Following an educated hunch, Jag bypassed the main entry and instead began walking around the perimeter of the ship. It wasn’t long before he spotted a pair of legs dangling out of an access panel. Relatively sure his approach was not noticed, Jag leaned against the hull near the panel and said loudly, “I see the old girl is as temperamental as ever.”

Jag was rewarded with the sound of a loud thump, followed by a cry of pain and a vehement string of Corellian curses.

Han Solo shot out onto the floor with a look on his face that implied that he was about to deal whomever had just startled him a slow and torturous death. His gaze only softened somewhat when he recognized his intended target. “You know, kid, I’ve killed men for less,” he growled, pointing an accusing finger in Jag’s direction.

One corner of Jag’s mouth turned up in a slight smile. Years ago, he would have bristled at being referred to as a kid, but now he knew Han well enough to discern the affection and respect that lay underneath the term. “Hello, Han.”

“Hi, Jag. Brushing up on your diplomatic skills?” he asked sarcastically, rubbing the sore spot on the back of his head.

Jag grinned to himself. He certainly didn’t have a reputation for being a jokester, but sometimes Han provided such an easy target, even he couldn’t resist. “I am truly sorry. Please accept my humble apologies for my appalling behavior,” he said, affecting a stiff, formal bow.

Han rolled his eyes. “Please. Turn it off, Your Diplomatness, I just ate.”

This time, Jag could not contain his laughter. “Sorry,” he finally said with sincerity. “Where is Leia?” he asked.

“Shopping. Can you believe she asked me if I wanted to go along?” he asked in a tone of voice that conveyed his distaste of the thought.

“I can’t believe that you refused such a tempting invitation.”

Han’s eyes narrowed. “You’re a real comedian today, Fel. Let me guess, for your next trick, you’ve got my daughter hiding around the corner to surprise me.”

Jag’s face fell. “No. Jaina’s not with me.”

“Ouch. It seems I’ve hit a sore spot. How long has it been?”

“Seven months, three weeks, and two days. Not that I’ve been counting,” Jag deadpanned.

“Ah, the perils of being in love with the Sword of the Jedi. You have my sympathy, kid.”

“May I ask a personal question?” Jag asked, unsure how Han would respond to the direction the conversation was about to take.

Han looked at him skeptically at first, but then replied with a shrug, “Sure, kid. I may or may not answer it, but fire away.”

“In different conversations over the years, Jaina has given me some details about your relationship with Leia. I can’t help but notice some parallels with my relationship with Jaina. I received the impression that there was a period of years before you were married, where you were separated from Leia for long periods of time, and during that time, you might have questioned Leia’s involvement in the relationship.”

Han rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “Parallels you say . . . It sounds like you’re describing your take on your relationship with my daughter exactly.”

“Perhaps,” Jag replied simply.

“I don’t recall hearing a question in there.”

“My question is this:” Jag’s eyes searched Han’s, as if he could find the answer before he asked the question, “how did you survive it?”

A soft chuckle escaped Han’s lips, then he returned to Jag’s earnest gaze, asking softly, “It’s killing you inside, isn’t it?”

“Yes.” All of the confusion, frustration, loneliness, and pain that he felt came pouring forth from that one softly spoken word. A part of Jag couldn’t believe he was actually having this conversation with Jaina’s father, but another part of him needed to confide in someone who might have some idea what he was going through.

Han paused for a moment as if searching for something to say. Then his gruff façade began to return, and he said, “Look, kid, if you’re looking for reassurance, you really should be talking to Leia. She’s much better at all that ‘Jaina really loves you’ stuff.”

“No, that’s not it,” Jag said, shaking his head. “I mean, how did you get through each day not knowing how long it would be before you saw the woman you loved? Wondering if the future you longed for with her would ever come to pass?” Again, Jag was amazed at how he had just bared his soul to Han Solo.

Apparently, Han was just as amazed, and the expression on his face softened, as he spoke. “I didn’t have a choice. I just did,” he said simply. “I couldn’t stop loving Leia if I had tried. All I could do was hope that eventually she would see things my way.”

Jag’s pale green eyes twinkled faintly with amusement as he looked at Han skeptically and said, “That doesn’t sound quite like the Han Solo that I have heard so much about.”

“Well . . . maybe I might have kidnapped Leia and hoped that I could get her to see things my way,” he said sheepishly. “Not that I’m suggesting that you kidnap my daughter!” he added hastily.

Jag laughed in spite of himself and said, “No, I don’t think that approach would go very far with Jaina.”

“To be honest, it wouldn’t have worked with Leia, either. If our usual knack for drawing trouble hadn’t kicked in and Leia didn’t think I was going to die; marching right into a suicide mission to spare innocent lives – not that I’m suggesting you try that tactic, either!” he exclaimed, pointing a finger at Jag. Han paused for a moment and added, “There’s not a man in this galaxy that’s good enough for my daughter - but you’re as close as there’s ever gonna be. We’d like to keep you around.”

“Thank you,” Jag said softly.

“Hang in there, Jag. Jaina is stubborn, but she’s not stupid.”

Jag smiled and said, “Just like her father.”

Han returned the smile, then let it fade into a traditional smirk. He slapped Jag soundly on the back and said, “Come on, kid; let’s get a drink. If Leia catches us in this touchy-feely bonding moment, I’ll never hear the end of it.”

* * * * * * * *

Jaina Solo waited as the other eleven X-wings of Rogue Squadron disappeared one-by-one before activating her hyperdrive. As she had done far too many times to count in her lifetime, she watched as the stars around her stretched into lines then resolved into the familiar swirl of hyperspace. The Rogues were starting the first of many jumps to return to Mon Calamari.

Jaina wondered if Jag would be there when they returned. Fate had intervened to keep them apart for over seven months; when Jaina had been back on Mon Cal Jag had been away on assignment, and vice versa. The more she thought about it, though, there were a few times that she probably could have made more of an effort to join him. No, she told herself firmly, that’s just silly. That makes it sound like I’m avoiding Jag, and I’m not . . . am I?

No
, she decided, shaking her head. Why would I avoid him when I miss him so much? She missed the way his icy green eyes would subtly light up whenever he saw her, she missed the gentle press of his lips to hers when he kissed her tenderly, and she missed the firm press of his body against hers when he kissed her passionately. Mostly, she missed being able to lie quietly in his arms with her head resting on his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. Jaina didn't want to miss him that much; it complicated things. It would be so much easier if she could just enjoy the time that she spent with Jag without finding herself longing for him when they were apart.

Without really meaning to, Jaina thought back to the last time she had seen Jag. He had been recuperating from injuries he had received from an explosion in a botched assassination attempt on another ambassador. She couldn't recall the details of the incident because, at the time, they didn't matter to her. Once Jaina had been told that Jag had been injured, and she had been assured that Jag had not been the intended target and that the perpetrators had been caught, all she had cared about was going to him. She shuddered and an icy knot twisted in her stomach as the memory of Jag floating peacefully in a bacta tank flashed through her mind. As she slipped a gloved hand underneath her visor to rub at a phantom itch above her right eyebrow, she wondered why seeing him like that had bothered her so much then, and apparently still bothered her now. Although his injuries had been serious enough to warrant a lengthy stay in a bacta tank, they had not been life threatening.

Jaina frowned; this sudden introspection was turning out to be really uncomfortable. Sighing, she closed her eyes and allowed herself to float in the currents of the Force, hoping to relax and clear her thoughts of the disturbing paths that they had been traveling. Slowly, complete blackness began to resolve into an image of what looked to be a living room that she did not recognize.

After a moment, instead of just viewing the image, Jaina found herself standing in the middle of the room itself. A sense of warmth and love seemed to fill the room and wrap around her like a comforting blanket. Where am I? She looked around for anything that could help her answer that question.

Across the room, she spotted a collection of framed holos on a small end table. Curious, she walked over to the table and carefully picked up a smaller holo in a simple frame. Two young boys grinned back at her; one she guessed to be around six years old, the other she thought might be a couple of years younger. Jaina looked closely at the younger boy and smiled. With dark hair and pale green eyes, he looked exactly how she would picture Jag at that age. She glanced back at the older boy. He had the same dark hair and similar facial features, but with brown eyes instead of green. Is that Davin? She really had no idea what he had looked like; Jag had only talked briefly about his older brother a couple of times. Even now, he found it as hard to talk about his brother and his younger sister, Cherith, both of whom had died in battle far too young, as she had talking about her younger brother, Anakin, who also was lost far too soon. She gently placed the holo back on the table, trying to veer her thoughts back to trying to figure out where this vision had placed her. Could this be Jag’s childhood home? She frowned in confusion. Why would the Force bring her here?

A gust of unusually cool air brushed against the back of her neck, sending a chill down her spine. Jaina glanced about in surprise and confusion, wondering from where the sudden breeze could have come. Her gaze was drawn down to a holo in a large, ornate frame. She picked it up, and the first thing that she noticed was Jag, breathtakingly handsome in his full dress uniform. He was turned slightly to one side, and her eyes traveled down to where his arm was wrapped around the waist of a woman wearing . . . a wedding dress? Her gaze shot up to see the identity of Jag’s wife, and she gasped in shock. The woman’s head was already gone and the rest of her image was rapidly dissolving in front of Jaina’s eyes.

She quickly looked back at the first holo she had picked up, and was stunned to find only an empty frame. Thinking that maybe she was looking at the wrong frame, Jaina vainly scanned the others on the table, only to find that they were empty as well. As she shivered violently, she wondered if it was because of her growing sense of dread or simply from how incredibly cold the room was becoming. She glanced around, trying to find the source of the cold air, and was horrified to discover that the entire room was beginning to dissolve into blackness.

“Jaina . . .”

Even though the voice was so faint that it seemed to be coming from a great distance away, she recognized it instantly. “Jag?” she called out tentatively.

“Please help me . . .”

His voice sounded weak and pained to her. “Jag, where are you?” she cried, her heart pounding furiously. She looked down at the holo that she still held in her hands and watched in horror as Jag’s image began to dissolve away. “No!” she screamed, closing her eyes and clutching the frame to her chest, as if that could somehow keep him from going away.

Suddenly, she was holding nothing and the floor fell away. She opened her eyes to find that she was free falling through an endless void. Her mouth opened to scream, but she could not seem to fill her lungs.

“Jaina . . . help me . . .”

Jaina’s eyes flew open and she jerked against her harness, drawing in a sharp breath. Her eyes darted around the cockpit and her breath came in ragged gasps as she desperately tried to shake off the disturbing vision.

Leaning back in his chair, Dif Scaur studied the patterns of shadows that the harsh overhead lighting painted onto the rough-hewn rock walls. He could have had the walls finished in the same smooth, sterile white as the rest of the complex, but he chose to let them as they were. The irregularities seemed more suited to his moods.

In the distance, he could hear the precisely measured click of booted feet coming closer. He waited until the sound stopped in front of his desk to slowly swivel around in his chair. Eyes so pale blue they were almost devoid of color slowly glanced up to meet glowing red ones.

“Report?” he asked simply.

“All test results have come in exactly as we have anticipated. We are ready for the next phase."

Scaur tented his fingers together. “Excellent. I will make arrangements to provide you with the-” he paused a moment to allow a small smile to cross his thin lips, “-material you need.”

After exchanging curt nods, Scaur swiveled in his chair to once again face the wall, listening to the meticulous click of boots on smooth stone fade from the room. Alone once again, he allowed a larger, satisfied smile to creep onto his face. Everything was proceeding exactly to plan.

After all of these years patiently biding his time, it would not be much longer now . . .

*Gasp of horror*

Scoundrel, I'm happy you finally got around to updating, but this seems a little...extreme. I thought this story was gonna be one of the few well-written "sappy" stories - but you've changed it around and it now has "dark undertones"! OH NO! Mysterious Plots! Disturbing visions! I gotta get Thrawn over here, he's gonna love it! I'll see ya later...

Dif Scaur, Dif Scaur... he is... who?

Nice Han/Jag conversation on the paraellels between their courtships.

Disturbing vision for Jaina with Jag disappearing from her sight.

Dif Scaur is the New Republic Intelligence Head responsible for the development of the anti-Yuuzhan Vong bioweapon Alpha Red. Since this was developed in conjunction with the Chiss that could explain the guy with the glowing red eyes. Since this was rendered obsolete, rather than being a war winning weapon, by the actions of the Jedi (first Vegere in neutralising the first batch and then the others in finding Nomona Sekot and ending the war) he might have a grudge over them “stealing his victory”

That was my thought too . . . mischief

JAGSGURL15: HEY! that waasss awesome! dying for more!

An unnamed source wink told me you were working on a fic - and I nearly missed it yesterday! shock

Great start! The Han/Jag banter was just as excellent on the second read. I especially liked Jag squirming inside at having this particular conversation with Han. Hee hee! mischief

Jaina's vision was very creepy, and very well done. Sure sets a dark tone to start the story - which is good, because I like dark, angsty stories. cool

One quick question - is Dejhira Blue a new OC for this story? I thought I've read all your other stuff (lurking, probably blush ) and her name didn't seem familiar.

Looking forward to more! grin
