"Welcome to Mon Calamari, Majesty. We are pleased that you could join us for the Celebration."
Queen Mother Tenel Ka returned Chief of State Cal Omas's deferential bow with a slight nod and mentally wondered again at the changes in the galaxy. Six years ago she was a young Jedi warrior, satisfied with her role in life, content to fight for others and defend her friends. Now, at the end of the brutal war with the Yuuzhan Vong, she was the head of the strongest system of planets in the galaxy, so important that the chief of state of the Galactic Federation gave her precedence as they walked into the Gathering Dome.
"Please enjoy the hospitality that Mon Calamari has to offer," Cal directed the queen mother's attention to the immense selection of delicacies spread on one long table that ran the length of the brightly lit room. "The ceremony will begin at sunset."
Once again, the she nodded to the statesman and then purposefully walked to the food table. She was not hungry but experience had taught the young woman that if she appeared engaged in some activity there was less of a chance that some irritating diplomat would approach her.
"This food scans safe, Majesty," Alkimra, one of the queen mother's bodyguards, announced.
The young woman glanced around the large auditorium as she took a bite of a red pastry shaped like a fish. The dome was huge, easily larger than any auditorium on Hapes, with a large stage at one end and a mosaic collection of carvings running up the four walls to finish at the edge of the transparent dome which gave a clear view of the full moon beginning to rise in the sky. Scattered around the room were the people considered to have most contributed to the fighting in this last war and Tenel Ka recognized many of them. Some were Jedi she had trained with, others were politicians she had spoken with as the new queen mother, and some were beings she had once considered friends.
A small rustle of Alkimra's clothing alerted Tenel Ka to her bodyguard's shifted attention. A man dressed in a dull brown jumpsuit approached the Queen Mother from her left and Tenel Ka felt her body tense as she recognized the man, a former friend, her former best friend.
"Your Highness," Jacen greeted the young woman. "It is good to see you."
"And you," Tenel Ka replied, suddenly hating the war anew for causing so many changes and losses. There was a time when the young warrior would not consider a future without her closest friend Jacen but now this young man whom Jacen had become was a stranger to her.
"Have you seen the mosaic? Every known creature in the galaxy is carved into the wall, even ewoks and a bantha."
Tenel Ka's lips twitched as she remembered her old Jacen who loved animals. Many times he had lost one of his pets, creating havoc at the Academy.
"I am headed to a planet called Pralre at the edge of known space tomorrow. There have been reports of a group of beings that use the Force for unusual activities," Jacen turned and faced the mosaic that the queen mother was studying. "If I discover a new creature I will have to take a picture and bring it back here for the wall."
The female Jedi Knight closed her eyes for a moment and willed the picture of the old Jacen away. He was gone and would not come back, "I wish you well on your journey."
The man smiled, an expression so familiar yet so changed, and stepped away from the Queen.
Tenel Ka took another bite of something in her bowl and successfully pushed back her pain. She had already spent too much time during the war considering the past and the future that should have been.
"People are like islands," a crusty voice spoke from the queen mother's right.
Tenel Ka jumped, shocked that someone could get so close to her without her noticing.
"Do you see?" an elderly calamarian female stared down into the queen mother's eyes.
Tenel Ka shook her head.
"Ah, you are yet young though not untried." the older female paused as a speeder flew noisily over the dome. "Sentient beings are like islands, living their lives alone for their own goals. However, sometimes, we cannot be what we are meant to be unless we are connected to other beings, other islands. Consider the Great Chain, have you heard of it?"
Tenel Ka remembered that there was a group of islands on the southernmost point of Mon Calamari but it took her a moment to remember the islands' history, "They are islands in the south, considered one of the best places in the galaxy to live."
"But each island alone cannot exist. The islands depend on each other for resources unique to each one of them." She sighed, "Throughout life we build bridges to connect ourselves to others but sometimes the climate, and our resources change, and we no longer use those bridges. It is sad but inevitable."
Tenel Ka glanced across the room at Jacen, talking to his sister. "Should we then destroy those bridges?"
The calamarian smiled, "But we never know when the climate will shift again, causing us to need the islands we have forgotten about." She patted Tenel Ka's arm and turned away. "The climate changes, the future changes, but we must always build new bridges to stand beside the old ones."
Tenel Ka watched the woman leave and then turned toward the twins. This Jacen Solo was a stranger to her but maybe someday, in the future, they would have a chance to build a new bridge together.

Poor Tenal Ka. I think she's the one I cried for most at the end of the NJO. She's all alone. It was like they killed her without killing her.

This was an amazing portrayal of these two. They don't seem to show up much in fanfiction. Great work.

Where have all the J/TK pieces gone lately? *scratches head*
Fantastic work, Kettch!
. I loved the talk of islands and bridges. Do you think you should include codes (i.e. Tenel Ka, Jacen Solo) in the subject title?

*happy coo*
Oh my.... Goddess... Tis amazing!!
It was just... just.... hmm....
"Sentient beings are like islands, living their lives alone for their own goals. However, sometimes, we cannot be what we are meant to be unless we are connected to other beings, other islands. Consider the Great Chain, have you heard of it?"
This woman is very smart....
Listen to her Tenel Ka!! She speaks the truth!!
Tenel Ka remembered that there was a group of islands on the southernmost point of Mon Calamari but it took her a moment to remember the islands' history, "They are islands in the south, considered one of the best places in the galaxy to live."
People living and working in harmony makes a paradise?.... I suppose it would... Even if it was in a perfectly in-hospitable place...
"But each island alone cannot exist. The islands depend on each other for resources unique to each one of them." She sighed, "Throughout life we build bridges to connect ourselves to others but sometimes the climate, and our resources change, and we no longer use those bridges. It is sad but inevitable."
*sigh* *sniffles* Jacen you idiot!....
Tenel Ka? Please don't go fall in love with someone else.... *whimper*
Tenel Ka watched the woman leave and then turned toward the twins. This Jacen Solo was a stranger to her but maybe someday, in the future, they would have a chance to build a new bridge together.
Aww!!....
Happy sweet-almost-mush!! It was so wonderful Goddess!! Thank you!! *bows at your feet*

I loved the connection of islands and bridges. That was really great, especially her internal thoughts about change and loss. Beautiful.

um... you might want to put TK/J in the title unless you mean this is going to be a Tahiri/Jacen fic *dodges objects being thrown* or a Tahiri/Jag fic *people slow the volly, but objects are still thrown* I'm just saying!!!! *dives behind a rock for cover and puts up a force shield* Jeezz people, relax.

VaderLVR64
Thank you.
I'm glad you liked the ending. I personally hope the official authors explore the TK/J relationship more with the upcoming post-NJO books.
407wDawn
It was like they killed her without killing her.
True. It was as if they thought, hmm... "we're already killing so many characters, what can we do that's almost like death but worse.
BTW, welcome to the boards; I do not believe that I have seen you around before.
AnakinsHeir
Thanks so much.
I am glad you liked it. I started another story with TK and how she accepts Jacen's return but with the plethera of plot bunnies that attacked me at the same time I did not finish it. Maybe I will someday.
Amidala_Skywalker
Fantastic work, Kettch!
Thanks.
And, I don't know where the stories have gone. Oh, and thanks for reminding me about the title; I was rushing and completely forgot.
Agent_Jaid
Thank you very much for the lovely words.
I really hope that the official authors explore their relationship in the post-NJO books but who knows? They did not mention that Tenel Ka is a main character but--regardless of what the NJO authors did--you can't have Jacen's future void of Tenel Ka.
-Tenel-Ka-
Thanks.
I am glad you loved it. :)
red_rose_knight
Thanks. :) It's hard to portray the depths of Tenel Ka's feelings since she's not much of a talkative, vocally expressive person. In that regard she's the opposite of pre-vong Tahiri. Hmmm... I wonder what would happen if Tahiri and Tenel Ka were forced to spend a lot of time together, just the two of them? *Kettch uses very large blow torch to destroy plot bunny*. :)
Fireyforce
lol! Thanks. :) Like the title now? [face_mischievous]
