Title: Second Chance
Author: Jags_Scoundrel
Timeframe: post-NJO
Characters: Jagged Fel, Jaina Solo
Keywords: J/J
Summary: Jaina and Jag haven't seen each other in six years. Not since he was assigned back to the Unknown Regions at the end of the war. Now their paths have crossed again, and they have some things to work out...
Notes: This is the winning entry from the recent Jaina/Jag Challenge. While I was writing it a few flashback scenes came to mind, so I decided to (hopefully!) turn this into a series of vignettes. The usual disclaimers apply . . .

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

What am I doing here?

As Jagged Fel stared down at the half-finished mug of ale that he cradled in his hands, he wondered if he was referring to the fact that he was sitting in a tapcaf on Denon - or that he was in the Known Regions at all. He realized as he took another swig of his drink that a desire to ponder the latter was what had driven him to the tapcaf closest to the spaceport.

After the war with the Yuuzhan Vong, he had been recalled to Csilla to prepare for his assignment as CEDF Liaison to the newly formed Galactic Alliance. He had only just returned home when the first attack had been reported. The Hoytarians, a race inhabiting a far corner of the Unknown Regions, which had harassed the Chiss long before Jag was born and had been thought put down, had instead been patiently rebuilding their forces for an all-out assault. The Ruling Families had quickly abandoned any plans of establishing ties with the rest of the galaxy, and the CEDF had reassigned Jag to command a squadron once again.

The realization that he might not see Jaina Solo ever again had shaken him to the core of his very soul. He had actually considered deserting the Chiss to return to Jaina, but after recalling his doubts about Jaina’s true feelings for him after their last meeting, Jag had ultimately thrust the notion aside. He would not abandon his duty for a slight whisper of hope. It dawned on him that duty was the answer to the question of why he had come back to the Known Regions. The same sense of duty that had kept him away for six years is what had brought him back, no matter how unwilling he was to face the possibilities that his extended absence may have created.

After years of fierce fighting, the Chiss had emerged victorious. Eventually, the Ruling Families had decided to try once again to become a member of the greater galactic community, and once again Jag had been appointed Liaison to the Galactic Alliance. He regarded his new assignment with much less enthusiasm than he had the first time; the nature of his job increased the chance that he might cross paths with Jaina, and the prospect filled him with a sensation to which he was quite unaccustomed.

Jagged Fel was scared.

By throwing himself tirelessly into his duties of command, he had been able to push his feelings for Jaina aside and had not allowed himself the time to examine them. He feared that seeing her again would release all of the feelings and dreams that he had fought so hard to keep locked away. Logically, he knew that after six years with no indication that he would ever return that Jaina had probably given up on their relationship, but his heart desperately clung to the faint hope that there was still a chance. To have that hope - and his heart - shatter into a million pieces by seeing with his own eyes that she had moved on without him would cause a pain that Jag did not know if he could bear.

“Ktah,” he muttered in frustration as he tried to will the thought away.

Suddenly tired of his painful self-examination, he drained the remaining contents of his mug in two large gulps. As he placed the empty glass on the table in front of him, a slight movement near the entrance caught his eye. Jag glanced up to observe a couple walking arm-in-arm into the tapcaf, and his eyes widened fractionally in shocked recognition.

* * * * * * *

Jaina stopped outside the door to the tapcaf and turned to face her companion. “I realize that this place might not be up to your usual standards.”

“Sweetheart, I’ve been in some of the worst places the galaxy has to offer. This can’t be that bad.”

She smirked and said, “I know. I meant that this place is probably much nicer than you’re used to.”

Han Solo scowled at her. “You sure know how to hurt a guy, you know? I get this kind of treatment from your mother all the time - remind me again why I wanted to subject myself to this kind of abuse from my daughter.”

Jaina smiled sweetly. “Because you love me, you missed me, and you just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to catch up over a couple of Whyren’s Reserves – my treat.”

“Guilty as charged,” he said as a genuine smile spread across his face.

It was nice to see that smile again. During the war, what was left of her family had been ripped apart, and there was a time that Jaina had doubted that any of them would ever have a reason to smile. Although they did not see each other very often, her family was now closer than ever. After years of trying, she had also come to terms with most things in her life . . . except for the gaping hole in her heart where Jagged Fel once was.

Six years ago, when they had said their good-byes on that snow-covered landing field on Zonoma Sekot, she had no idea that it would be the last time that she would see him. The irony of it all was almost too much; she had pushed Jag away to discover what exactly she wanted from her life, only to find that she wanted Jag to be a part of that life. Well, there’s no chance of that now. After six years, she would be foolish to think that Jag would ever return.

“Jaina, are you okay?”

Han’s concerned voice dragged her out of her silent reverie. “Hmm? Oh, I’m fine, Dad,” she answered distractedly.

Han folded his arms across his chest. “Now, I thought you had more sense than to try to lie to your old man. You’re thinking about Fel, aren’t you?”

She glanced up at him, shocked that her thoughts could be that transparent to him. “When did you start reading minds?” she asked, frowning slightly.

“Hey, I may not have the Force, but I do have a brain. I know how you felt about that kid, I know you haven’t heard from him in a long time . . . and I know that look. So, you want to talk about it?”

“With you?” she asked dubiously.

“I might just surprise you,” he said gently.

Jaina smiled. “Okay, Dad. Let’s go,” she said as she linked arms with him.

They walked through the doorway and stopped just inside the entrance. Jaina began scanning the room for an empty table – and froze when her gaze locked with a pair of hauntingly familiar eyes. Jag? To confirm that her eyes weren’t deceiving her, she reached out through the Force and immediately touched his luminous presence.

She felt her father’s hand gently touch her shoulder as he said, “I think I’ll take a rain check on those Whyren’s; you two need to catch up a little more than we do.”

“Dad, you don’t have to leave,” she said as she looked back up at him.

He shrugged. “Who said anything about leaving? I’ll be sitting right over there with my blaster trained right between Fel’s eyes. If he even thinks about hurting you, I’ll just shoot him.”

“Dad!” she protested and smacked his arm with an open palm.

He thrust his palms upward and feigned a look of innocence. “Hey! I promise to set it for ‘stun.’”

“Dad,” she growled threateningly through gritted teeth.

Han’s mouth curved into a lopsided smile. “Just kidding, sweetheart,” he said before pulling her into a quick hug. “Your mother and I will be on the Falcon if you need us,” he said quietly.

“Thanks, Dad,” she whispered.

Before he turned to leave, Han stepped back and offered Jag a quick grin and a lazy salute, which Jag crisply returned with a wry upward curl to the left side of his mouth. As she heard her father’s footsteps fade into the background, Jaina watched the subtle smile fade from Jag’s face as his gaze shifted back to her. She reached out to him again through the Force, but the only impression that she could perceive was his struggle to wrestle a wild tangle of emotions under control. Even as she tried to reassure herself that there were a number of reasons why Jag would feel conflicted at seeing her after all of this time, Jaina could not help but wonder if Jag had found someone else, and an icy knot twisted in her stomach at the thought.

As she slowly made her way over to stand across from him, Jaina fought the urge to fling her arms around him and weep for joy for no other reason than the fact that he was alive, for the fear that the true reason that she had not seen or heard from him was that he had been killed had taunted her subconsciously. She stood there for a long moment trying to think of something to say, but each line that popped into her head sounded even more inadequate and ridiculous than the one before.

A faint smile touched Jag’s lips. “Jaina Solo – speechless. I never thought I would see the day.”

She folded her arms across her chest as she felt a familiar burst of irritation. “Well, I see that your dry wit hasn’t changed in six years.”

His smile carried up to his eyes as he responded, “And neither has your reaction to my teasing.”

Jaina could not stop the smile that blossomed on her face. “Is this seat taken?” she asked, motioning to the seat beside him.

“Not at all. Please, sit down.”

“So, what brings you here?” she asked as she sat on the chair beside him, hoping the question didn’t sound as stupid as she imagined.

“I am finally starting my duties as CEDF Liaison to the Galactic Alliance – after a slight six year delay,” he said with a wry grimace.

Jaina nodded somberly. “Wedge told me about your unexpected change of plans.”

Regret shone in his eyes. “I’m sorry that I did not contact you directly. As it was, I had to resort to some thoroughly ‘Rebel’ tactics to even get a message out to my uncle and ask that he relay the information to you.”

“’Rebel’ tactics?” she repeated then laughed. “It sounds like someone got a bit corrupted by all of the years spent with us here in the known part of the galaxy.”

“I suppose so,” he said with a little laugh that sounded almost wistful to Jaina.

She tried again to probe his feelings through the Force, but she could only get a vague sense of a feeling seeping out from behind his barriers. Hesitancy? Unease? It was hard to find a name for it because it was such an unfamiliar feeling coming from Jag.

“So, how are things with you?” he finally asked, breaking the silence. “The last time that I saw you, your life was a bit . . . unsettled.”

She smiled. “I’ve managed to get a handle on who I am and where I’m going. I’ve been able to reconcile my role as a Jedi with my duties to the military – I’m Rogue Leader now, by the way,” she said and Jag nodded as if impressed. “There’s just one problem,” she began and her smile disappeared. “There’s a certain pilot that I miss having in my life. I sent him away six years ago and he’s probably built a life of his own by now.”

He looked at her intently for what seemed like forever as she waited for his reply. “Jaina, that pilot never was able to get on with his life without you.”

Jaina let out a breath she had not even realized that she had been holding. She reached out and grasped one of his hands with hers, smiling from the almost electric warmth that quickly raced from her hand and up her arm to spread throughout her body. “It looks like we’ve been given a second chance. Do you think we can get it right this time?”

Jag dropped his gaze to the table. “I don’t know,” he said quietly.

Jaina’s heart plummeted to somewhere around her toes; that wasn’t the answer she was expecting. Maybe she had assumed too much. “Oh,” she said as she quickly withdrew her hand.

He glanced back up at her with a look of uncertainty that she had not seen since he had taken her to that deserted conference room on Borleias many years ago. “I mean that I want to. It’s just . . .” he paused, apparently struggling with the admission, “If I allow myself to believe that we have a chance, only to have my hopes dashed a second time – I don’t know if I could survive that. If you still have any doubts at all, I’m not sure that I am willing to take the chance.”

Finally, Jaina understood the defenses that he had in place now, and her heart broke at the realization of how much pain she had caused him. She reached out with one hand to gently touch her fingertips to his cheek, and he closed his eyes, almost flinching from the touch. “I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know what my life is like without you in it . . . and I know that I don’t want to live that way if I don’t have to. It won’t be easy, but I promise you that I’m committed to doing what it takes to make this work. Jag, I love you.”

Jag’s eyes snapped open at her last words, and the emotions that he had guarded so carefully washed over her through the Force like a torrent bursting through a weakened dam. “And I love you, Jaina,” he said softly, but with conviction, before leaning forward to kiss her.

Their lips had only touched briefly when Jaina pulled back, surprised. “Jag, we’re not exactly alone here,” she gently reminded him.

“I have waited six years for this – I could care less if we had a million spectators,” he whispered in a voice tight with emotion before pulling her close and kissing her again.

grin I don't know what I like more about that - the real sense that this is still the Han Solo we first met in a bar in ANH, the real sense that Han Solo has learned to care, and isn't ashamed to show it... or the implication that maybe Han thinks that a blaster just ain't enough to deal with Jag... tongue

The awkwardness and tenderness in the J/J dialogue...! grin

“I’m sorry that I did not contact you directly. As it was, I had to resort to some thoroughly ‘Rebel’ tactics to even get a message out to my uncle and ask that he relay the information to you.”

“It looks like we’ve been given a second chance. Do you think we can get it right this time?”

Oh. I really like the way you avoided the inevitable "I love you" / "I know" exchange here... and I like the way that it's implied so intensely without being spoken at all even better!

Glad that came across right! happy

Did you do this deliberately? The effortless sense that this is someone who's been speaking, thinking and living Chiss for six solid years?

I was all set to type my usual denial then I realized that, in a sense, I did do that deliberately. In trying to portray Jag’s character correctly, I try to convey that he is someone who, with a relatively brief exception, has been speaking, thinking and living Chiss his whole life. I blush at the notion that you think I’ve done it so well. blush

Oh. I really like the way you avoided the inevitable "I love you" / "I know" exchange here... and I like the way that it's implied so intensely without being spoken at all even better!

Thanks again. happy I don’t trust myself to use "I love you" / "I know" literally, and now that I think about it, I didn’t even consciously have that in my mind when I wrote that.

Yippee! grin grin love dancing

And cue sweeping John Williams music!

The rest of the viggies (however many I end up with) will follow this same format: a brief scene with J/J to tie it to the story and set up the flashback, followed by the flashback itself. Here we go . . .

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

They had come back to Jaina’s apartment with the intention of starting to catch up on the events of the last six years of their lives, but had instead found themselves simply sitting side-by-side on her sofa, his arm around her shoulders and her head resting on his chest, both quietly lost in their own thoughts.

“Speechless again,” Jag murmured softly. “Twice in one day; it must be a record.”

Jaina was not sure why the gentle jab did not irritate her this time. Maybe it was the way her whole body tingled from the way his breath tickled her scalp. Or maybe it was just the fact that she was so content at this moment that nothing could bother her. Either way, she snuggled a little deeper into his embrace and draped her arm across his abdomen.

“Six years,” she said with a sigh. “I’m not even sure where to begin.”

“In my case, there is not much to tell.”

She craned her head to look up at him, eyeing him dubiously. “Oh, I seriously doubt that.” Gently, she pushed herself upright. “Why don’t you start with when you returned to Csilla? It must have been nice to see your family again.”

Jag smiled. “It was,” he said and then his smile quickly faded. “However, it wasn’t quite the reunion that I had expected.” He paused thoughtfully then amended that statement. “No. It wasn’t the reunion that I had pictured – but it was what I should have expected.”

* * * * * * * *

A fresh coating of snow crunched beneath his booted feet as Jag stepped away from the speeder. He shielded his eyes from the glare as he surveyed the grand house and surrounding landscape of his parents’ estate. It was hard to think of it as home. He had only had a chance to visit a few times since they had moved here, and the last time had been years ago. Drawing in a deep breath of the frosty air, Jag readjusted the strap of his flight bag on his shoulder and began walking toward the front steps.

The front door burst open the moment he placed his foot on the top step. “Jagged!” his mother cried as she quickly closed the distance between them. He had to brace himself for impact as best he could to keep them both from tumbling down the stairs as Syal threw her arms around him and hugged him fiercely.

He hugged her back, swallowing hard to try to alleviate the sudden, stinging dryness in his throat. “I missed you, Mother,” he said in a voice that sounded entirely too high and hoarse, and he swallowed again.

She lifted her head from his shoulder and smiled at him, tears glistening in her eyes. Touching a hand to his cheek, she said, “I missed you too, Jagged.”

It struck him how cold her touch felt, so he pushed her away to arms’ length and glanced down to note that she was certainly not dressed for the weather. “What are you doing, Mother?” he asked in disbelief. “It’s too cold to be out here without wearing a coat,” he said as he set his bag down and began removing his jacket.

“And how many times did I have to tell you that when you were little?” she asked with a smile as he draped his jacket around her shoulders.

“Too many times to count – which is why you should know better,” he admonished as he picked up his bag and ushered her inside.

“Wynssa, your brother is home,” Syal called out as Jag shut the door behind them.

“Jag!” he heard his sister squeal from somewhere near the top of the stairs. He blinked in disbelief as he watched her bounding down the steps; somehow while he had been away, the gangly little girl that he remembered had begun to blossom into a beautiful young woman.

Wyn skidded to a halt at the bottom of the stairs and planted her hands on her hips as she took one look at their mother wearing Jag’s jacket. She looked at Jag knowingly. “She couldn’t wait for you to get in the front door, could she?”

The left side of his mouth curled up into a slight smile. “Are you surprised?” he asked.

“Nope,” she said, grinning, before launching herself into his arms. “I missed you, big brother,” she murmured into his shoulder as she hugged him tightly.

“I missed you, too, Wyn,” he said as he returned the embrace. After a moment, he lightly gripped her by the shoulders and stepped back to appraise her as he said, “Let me take a look at you.” He glanced back at their mother with a sly, teasing grin on his face. “It appears as if you and Father will be dealing with a parade of potential suitors at your door any day now.”

“Oh, Jag, stop it,” Wyn said, rolling her eyes and lightly smacking his arm. “Besides,” she began coyly, “I wouldn’t be interested in anyone around here anyway.”

“Oh really?” he asked and arched one eyebrow, intrigued by the apparently forthcoming admission.

“Really. There isn’t a guy on Csilla, or probably anywhere else in the galaxy, for that matter, that could compare to Jacen!”

Jag stared back, uncharacteristically dumbstruck, at his sister. “Jacen,” he repeated. “Jacen Solo?” He had heard a brief recount of what had transpired on Csilla when Jacen and the Skywalkers had come in their search for Zonoma Sekot, but he had no idea that Jacen had left such an impression on his little sister.

“Well, of course, silly. How many other Jacens’ do I know?” Wyn asked, looking at him like he had just asked her the most stupid question she had ever heard.

Her expression then changed to one of girlish awe and her words tumbled out in an excited rush. “Oh, Jag, you should have seen him; he was amazing! That creep Aabe was going to kill me, but then Jacen stepped out of nowhere and told him to let me go. Suddenly, Aabe and Irolia were shooting and Jacen was knocking the bolts away with his lightsaber as he charged toward us. Aabe shoved me in Jacen’s way and tried to escape, but Jacen used the Force and closed the carriage doors and Aabe crashed into them. His weapon skidded across the floor to me and I picked it up, but I didn’t need it because Jacen totally had him cornered. He was so amazing! Did I mention that he’s really cute, too? I can see why you’re so sweet on his sister.”

Jag winced inwardly. His thoughts drifted to Jaina often enough of their own accord; they certainly did not need any additional prompting. “I’m insulted,” he said, hoping to change the subject now that she had finally paused to take a breath. “I have only been home a few minutes, and it seems that I’ve already been forgotten.”

“Get used to it, Jag,” their mother said as she removed his jacket from around her shoulders and proceeded to hang it up. “Jacen Solo has been a frequent topic of conversation ever since she met him”

“Mom,” Wyn complained, “you make it sound like he’s all I ever talk about.”

“That’s because he is,” Syal countered, amusement gleaming in her eyes.

Wyn made a little exasperated noise then turned her attention back to him. “Speaking of the Solos, Jag,” she began, apparently trying to shift the focus of the teasing onto him, “how come you didn’t bring your girlfriend with you to visit? Were you embarrassed to have her meet us?”

Jag felt as if he had been sucker-punched in the gut; that far exceeded the boundary of good-natured sibling teasing. He turned on his sister, his eyes wide with barely controlled ire, and he opened his mouth to tell her so, in no uncertain terms, when his mother gently touched his arm and stopped his tirade before it even began.

“Jagged,” she said gently, “she didn’t know that you had requested permission to bring Jaina with you and that she chose not to come.”

Wyn’s eyes grew wide, like rounded moons. “Oh, Jag. I’m so sorry.”

Pity, he thought in disgust. That was the last thing that he wanted right now. “It’s okay, Wyn,” he mumbled half-heartedly, just so she would stop looking at him like that. “Where is everyone else?” he asked, hoping to steer the conversation onto a more comfortable vector.

The way that his mother’s face fell told him that he had not succeeded. “Your father was called away just after you notified us that you were on your way. He wouldn’t tell me what was so urgent.”

“It must be big,” Wyn piped in. “Cem was here, too, but he just left a few hours ago. His squadron was put on alert and he had to cut his leave short.”

Jag furrowed his brows in concern. “Do you have any idea what is going on?” he asked his mother.

“No,” she admitted simply, but her face betrayed her unspoken concerns. Jag felt a brief stab of pain through his heart at the haunted look in her eyes. He imagined that her fear for his own safety had caused that look many times while he had been away.

As usual, the rare glimpse of his mother’s true feelings did not last long. The woman once known as Wynssa Starflare transformed with practiced ease from concerned wife and mother to happily doting mother with just a smile. She gently smoothed an imagined wrinkle from the shoulder of Jag’s flightsuit and said lightly, “You must be tired from your trip, dear. Let me show you to your room.” Without another word, she turned and gracefully began ascending the staircase.

With a heavy heart, Jag picked up his flight bag and followed his mother. It seemed that little had changed during his time away.

The next one might take a bit longer to finish up. sad All I’ve got right now is a vague idea and a couple of paragraphs written. I’ll get it done as soon as I can.

I read this in the challenge thread and loved it. Now you are adding to it? Awesome!
I'm sure Jag must have wanted to tell Wyn to shut-up about Jacen Solo. LOL

I loved seeing J/J cuddling and talking on her sofa. Very sweet.
There is more?
