Hi! This is my first fanfic...
Title: Shadows of the Unknown
Author: Valin_Halcyon
Timeframe: About 5 years after TUF
Characters: Valin Horn, Wyn Fel, OCs
Genre: Action, Drama
Summary: Valin Horn is sent to the Unknown Regions to investigate Sith sightings
********************
Valin was stunned.
Stunned by her beautiful eyes, by the way they radiated joy, by their dark brown hue.
Stunned by her delicate laugh, by her vibrant voice, by her lively tone.
“Well, are you gonna ask her?” asked Marak.
Valin was jolted out of his thoughts. “Uh… only if you ask someone”
“Yeah, right,” Marak said, grinning. “C’mon, she’s not gonna say no.”
“I don’t know… her brother would kill me. Maybe literally,” Valin said, glancing nervously in Jagged’s direction.
“C’mon. You could use the force to push him away…”
“He’d have to shoot me first. But all right.” Valin sighed and moved towards her.
Get psyched
, he thought to himself.
I’ve taken on five to one odds before… this shouldn’t be hard. But then again, what use did a loyal son of Corellia have for odds
? Valin took a deep breath and smiled.
“Will you dance with me?”
Startled, Wyn Fel turned around. Her glass flew from her hand towards Valin’s head.
With practiced ease, Valin grabbed the glass just before it hit his face. “I’m so sorry,” Wyn gushed. “Did I hit you?”
“No, it’s alright,” laughed Valin. “I get that kind of thing often, though it’s usually a vibroblade.”
“Still, I should have been more careful,” Wyn said. Grinning sheepishly, she extended her hand. “Wyn Fel.”
“Valin Horn,” Valin said, taking her hand.
“You’re in my brother’s squadron, aren’t you? If he sees you, he’ll probably shoot you immediately.” Laughing at Valin’s crestfallen face, she said, “But I’ll still dance with you.” She motioned to the dance floor. “Shall we?”
“I’d love to!” Valin chuckled. “Just don’t tell you brother!”
“Don’t worry,” said Wyn, moving closer to Valin as a Corellian waltz started.
The two dancers matched the slow cadence. “You know, this is the first time I’ve danced with a boy in the same room as Jag without him noticing. Usually by now he’d have seen me and pulled me over after the song.”
Valin grinned sheepishly. “I might have a little to do with that…” he whispered.
“How?” Wyn questioned, her mouth disconcertingly close to Valin’s ear.
Valin pulled back slightly. “The Horn family has a proud tradition of being able to influence minds….”
“Oh.” Wyn pulled him closer.
Valin and Wyn soon became engrossed in the music, not noticing or caring that it had changed to a quicker dance of Chandrila. Valin asked Wyn, “So, does your brother allow you to have any boyfriends?”
Wyn giggled. “Of course not. But there was one boy I liked the moment I set my eyes on him…” she trailed off.
“Who?” Valin asked. “Jacen Solo?” The boy in question was dancing a few meters away with Tenel Ka.
“No,” she said. “You.”
She leaned forward slightly, pulling Valin closer. Valin felt himself tense, waiting for her lips to descend upon his.
His romantic thoughts were interrupted by a tap on his shoulder.
Jagged Fel was furious.
His first punch caught Valin in the jaw, and Wyn squealed in fright. Valin saw the second punch before it started and sidestepped out of the way.
“You-sithin’-JEDI!” Fel growled. “What right do you have to meddle with my sister’s mind?”
Valin knew that Jagged wouldn’t listen to reason, so he projected an image of him running to the right into Jagged’s head and melded into the crowd.
So much for a first impression
, thought Valin.

Starlan: Thanks!
Jes: Right now!
TheCrazyRodian: Thanks as well!
Here it is:
Green lasers flashed passed Valin’s cockpit, intersecting a few meters in front of him. He dove, putting his craft into a slow spin.
“Hang on Whistler. It’s gonna get hot!” Valin yelled as Whistler blatted harshly. “Yes, I’ll get him off our backs. Cut power to port engines on my mark.”
Another pair of lasers hit his shields as Valin switched to proton torpedoes. “Three, two, one, mark!” he yelled as he put all his laser power to his engines. The sudden maneuver caused his X-wing to turn sharply, pressing him against his seat as his inertial compensator struggled to make up for the sudden maneuver.
The TIE Defender that had been pursuing him was now coming head to head. Valin felt its pilot make the split second decision to break off to port. He smiled grimly and launched the two warheads where he knew the pilot was going to be.
The TIE pilot realized his mistake, but it was too late. The torpedoes blasted through his shields and vaporized the top wing pylon as well as a considerable portion of the cockpit. “Wooohooo!” Valin whooped. “I guess you owe me a drink, Marak.”
The cockpit seal hissed, and light entered the simulator canopy. Valin unbuckled himself and leapt out nimbly. He also released the lock on the astromech socket, inciting a victorious whistle from the droid.
Across the room, Marak exited the TIE simulator. “Best of three?” he inquired, grinning.
“You wish.” Valin wiped his hand across his sweaty brow. “Where to?”
“Let’s go to DownTime, or whatever the Ackbar’s equivalent is,” Valin answered.
“Fine with me. Just don’t order anything too expensive, because I only have a few credits to spare,” Marak cautioned.
The two friends walked towards the pilot lounge. “Don’t worry. I’ll just get an Alderaanian Ale,” joked Valin.
Marak glared back with mock indignation. “You do that and I’ll just have to shoot you. Not that it would do any good,” he mused.
Valin laughed, but abruptly stopped. “Sithspawn!” he muttered.
“What is it?”
“It’s Fel,” Valin hissed. “Here, get behind the bulkhead.”
Jagged Fel was deep in conversation with Jaina Solo. “I’m telling you, he must have influenced her mind, because there’s no way she would like some stuck up guy like Valin…”
“Valin’s not stuck up! He’s changed in the two years since you flew with him!”
“Yeah right. What could happen in two years that would totally change a person?”
“How about losing half of your squadron in an ambush?” There was a moment of silence, in which Fel struggled to think of something to say.
“Well, let’s just drop the subject,” Fel finally said.
“All right. But don’t think I’m finished with you…”
“I’m not finished with you either…”
Valin heard a sound, muffled by the bulkhead, and whispered to Marak to follow him. As Valin passed Fel, he saw that he was too busy to notice the two Jedi pilots. “For once, I’m glad I can’t see,” Marak whispered in disgust.
“I really need that drink,” Valin said as they headed towards the tapcaf.
“Oh no you don’t. That mess was not your fault!” Marak exclaimed.
“But I should have sensed those Dark Jedi…”
“Enough! It was not your fault. In fact, you’re the one who saved me and half the squadron after those brights jumped us, so don’t start feeling bad.” Marak paused at the tapcaf’s entrance. “Cheer up, okay Valin? It won’t do you much good to blame yourself for something that isn’t your fault.”
They entered the brightly lit tapcaf, heading for the bar. The air was abuzz with voices, from human to Chiss to Twi’lek. In one corner, there was a sabacc game going on, while at another table two engineers were looking at a scale model of the
Ackbar
and prodding at different points on the MC-90B’s hull.
The barkeeper was a portly human wearing a dull colored tunic. “What can I get for you gentlemen?” he inquired.
“Two Corellian ales, please.” Marak took a few carefully folded crednotes out from his pocket as the bartender brought the two drinks.
“Thanks,” Valin said numbly. He downed half of it in one gulp, sputtering as the fiery liquid burned his throat.
“Valin? Is that you?”
“Wyn?” Valin turned around quickly, his amber drink swirling in its glass. Marak promptly muttered something about “going to the ‘fresher” and vacated the seat next to Valin, which Wyn promptly took.
“What’s the matter? Surprised to see me?” Wyn asked, grinning.
“Of course! I thought your brother would never let you off Csilla, let alone join the CEDF!”
“Well, mom helped me sneak off to the academy, and after that the best he could do was make sure that I was in his squadron.”
“Has Jag always been
that
overprotective? Did you even get let out of the house when you were on Csilla?” Valin asked, draining his glass.
“He’s just looking out for me!” Wyn exclaimed, her eyes narrowing.
“Sorry. I’ve not had that great of a day so far, and part of it concerns your brother…”
“Oh.” Wyn’s tone was subdued. “Was it about me?”
“Partially. Jag called me stuck up and said that you would never truly fall for someone like me, and then Jaina said something that brought back some really bad memories.” Valin sighed. “I hope that I haven’t ruined your day,” he concluded lamely, turning to face Wyn.
“Oh no, you haven’t.” Wyn snuggled closer. “In fact, seeing you was the highlight of my day.” Wyn leaned forward to kiss Valin.
At that moment, Jagged Fel walked up to the bar.
“Wyn!” he yelled, causing the various patrons to turn and look at him. The assorted Chiss shook their heads, knowing what was going on.
Startled, Wyn pulled back just as her brother yanked her off her seat. “You and I are going to have a little talk,” he growled. “And you,” Jag snarled at Valin, “better not even
look
at her again.”
The silence left by Fel’s sudden departure was soon replaced by the familiar sound of a tapcaf, the incident forgotten.
Forgotten by all but one.

Good start Mr. Valin...poor Valin, Jag would be a tough brother to have to contend with for his sister. Cute how protective he is of her though. Now Valin should be thinking to himself how he would feel if Jag sought after Jysella...
Though I guess that would be considerably worse, considering the age difference, and Corran would be scary...

Well, I said I'd read your fic, so here I am.
Great job! I'm not familiar with the characters, except for maybe Jag (NJO = plague. I avoid it), but they're definitely entertaining so far.
Love the big brother complex. It's very entertaining.
Keep up the great work!

Jaya: Thanks!
Padawan Lunetta: Great idea, except for the age difference. Then again, if Kyp can go after jaina...
Jesina Dreis: Oya!
talkingbannana: Thanks! The only characters that I have mentioned from NJO are Jag, Wyn and Valin.
I'll try to finish another part by Monday.

Not bad for a first timer!
Okay I noticed your oh so subtle hint in Jesina -land about this so here I am to harrass you as well (I know I said I don't bite but I DO review- writers beware....
)
I think you might be trying to cram a bit too much into a few to little lines. No..... don't go overboard and put the whole darn novel in one chapter but you may want to flesh it out a bit. Some of us a wee bit lost.... *OOOOO OOOOO ME!!!! *** Is there something I should have read before this? Who is Marak? I kinda like him but...... I don't know who he is.....
Other than that...... good job! Keep Corran.....er sorry Valin goin strong and I'll keep reading.
Okay, ya got me, I'll keep reading anyway....

See.....no biting........ yet...........
