Okay, so this is the first fanfic for me that I've taken seriously, so please be nice to me...
Title: the Color of a Lightsaber
Author(s): Me!
Characters: Nona Cad (original character), Luke Skywalker (eventually) and various Jedi Academy folk, as well as references to Obi-wan
Fic Type: Drama, some romance
Time Period: about 5 years before NJO
Intellectual property of Nona_Cad, and LucasFilms. Yay Star Wars!
Disclaimer: Lucasfilms owns everything except Nona Cad, other than that, they own me.
Beginnings (pt 1)
White. Nothing was visible for miles except a blinding white hue; the sun reflecting on the sand, the dried bones of the dead, off the small bits of metal that had surfaced, perhaps thousands of years old. Nothing was moving, no creature dared to venture out in this environment, for fear of dehydration or attracting unwanted attention to itself. Only the foolish tried their luck when the White Sea of Tantoonie was like this.
It was the largest stretch of desert between shelters, which on this world meant canyons or mountains. Nona Cad rested in a cave in a mountain on the most northern portion of the White Sea. It was only a few hours after day break, and yet it was already too hot to venture out for very long. She knew that had to wait for nighttime before she could dare traveling across the Sea to see who she came for. If he was still alive.
Nona leaned back against the stone wall, it was surprisingly cool to the touch. There was nothing really she could do but wait for nightfall. Sleep was always a possibility, but she didn't necessarily trust this harsh environment, not being a native.
No
, she thought lazily,
this is certainly nothing like Maenave
.
It was strange for her to think of Maenave as her home, considering how much she had hated it when she had been there. This might have been more because Nona hated her parents, hated how they had controlled her life all the way up until she had left. She had promised herself as a small child that she would never shelter and hide her children the way her parents had.
That is to say, she had promised herself that until a few months ago. That was why she was even on this god-forsaken rock, and was searching for a man that was probably long dead. Now, she'd be lucky if she'd even be make it to the age of looking for a husband. Like most small girls, and especially since she was secluded in her father's mansion, she had been dreaming and planning for it for years. Now, it was gone.
Nona slid down the wall and hit the ground with a small thud. The floor of the cave wasn't too dusty, so her black pants did not get too soiled.
Why do I even care if my clothes get dirty?
She thought to herself with a grimace.
I'm in the middle of a backwards world, and I care about how I look!?
She looked down at her all black clothing, and realized how stupid she was to wear such dark clothing for an adventure through the furnace.
She reached over to her small day pack, and rummaged through it. She hadn't brought many personal belongings, most of the space was taken up by food and water. There was one thing, however, that she only dared to bring out here because she knew she was alone. It was almost certain death if she was caught with it.
Nona brought out the lightsaber and held it in her hand. It didn't look so dangerous in its present condition, just a cold cylinder with some leather wrapped on one end for a grip, and a small button to activate it. The danger wasn't necessarily in the weapon, but more in what would happen to someone carrying, the implications. She knew that the Empire had been dead for a few years by this point, but being secluded on Maenave, she had no idea what the galactic climate was towards Jedi, or even the artifacts of Jedi.
She thought of asking the freight pilot that she had hitched a ride with, but he had been less than cordial, and she didn't know his allegiance. Besides, how could she truly trust someone she just met with such sensitive information? She didn't want to die because of some old piece of metal that had belonged to her ancestors, and had been only passed on to her through default.
It was because of this damn lightsaber that she was on her own personal quest to find a certain man, whom she was told lived on Tantoonie at one point. Obi-wan Kenobi. She hadn't even ever ignited the weapon, and already it had destroyed her life. And if Obi-wan wasn't here, she didn't know what she would do.
The longer she stared at the lightsaber, however, the more curious she became. Finally, Nona gave into the pressure, and pressed the button, hoping it wouldn't short-circuit and kill her. Instantly, a light purple blade shot from the hilt, and the entire cave was cast in purple light. She gave it a few thrusts and swings, testing the balance.
Instantly in her mind Nona could see a Dark Jedi approaching her. She raised the lightsaber to meet the attacker's red blade, and as their lightsabers went to the right, she spun and kicked the man in the chest. As he fell back, she kicked his lightsaber out of his hand and stabbed down. He screamed and then died. It was reasons like this that Nona was known as a powerful Jedi.
Shaking her head, she looked down at the lightsaber in her hands.
Why am I having these childish thoughts
, she scolded to herself.
I'm no Jedi, and have no intention of ever being one.
She would find this Obi-wan, give him the lightsaber and be on her merry way. Back in Maenave, starting a family.
You must seek out Obi-wan Kenobi. He will tell you what to do from here.
The voice of Nona's father came floating back to her.
Keep this lightsaber concealed, for there are people that would kill for even possessing one.
Her father was always over-reacting, but knew he was right this time. Being virtually isolated on Maenave, and even more so at her father's mansion, Nona was in no way prepared for the larger galaxy.
Why did Father ever let me leave the house?
As much as Nona hated the thought, it still came. All of her childhood she had been planning how to leave home and be on her own for once, but now that she was here, the only thing she wished for was the comfortable sheets of her bed. Her mother would tuck her in, and leave some hot spiced tea on the bedside table. Instead, she sat on cool, hard rock covered in a thin layer of dust. Alone.
The cave suddenly seem smaller than it had a few minutes before. Even though it was still hotter than what Nona was used to, she shivered and wrapped her cloak around her shoulders.
Why am I being so childish,
she thought, shaking her head.
This is what I've always wanted, and all I want is Mother, and home.
She took out a small nutrient bar from her pack, and ate it slowly.
Some adventurer I am.[i/]
Nona looked out of the opening of the cave, to see the light was slowly fading. Night was coming, and quick. She had read a [i]Traveler's Guide to Tantoonie
on the flight here, and read that nightfall sometimes could be more dangerous than the day. At night was when all the creatures came out, when all living things competed for space in the relative cool before the next day. She would have to be extra careful.
At least I have this lightsaber,
she though, as she stood up and put the pack on one shoulder. She clipped the weapon to her belt, and brushed the dust off her pants. She realized how ridiculous she must have looked, considering that she was going to be traveling across sand anyways, but stubbornly kept brushing herself until she thought she looked acceptable.
As the twin suns set, she stepped out of the cave and into the larger world of Tantoonie. Her beat-up, recently purchased landspeeder still sat ready to take her wherever she desired.
I suppose I am as ready as I will ever be.
Nona didn't look forward to the journey across the White Sea, but she had no choice. She had no home now.

RE: Beginnings
Your descriptions are very good; they sucked me in right away.
A suggestion: you might attract more readers if you put a little more information in the title of the thread (like characters involved, cannon or alternate universe tale, genre - action, romance, etc) so people can look at the title on the fanfic page and see "Oh, this is a (fill in the blank) type fanfic". You've definately got a good start.

*******************************************************
Nona rubbed her eyes tiredly, trying to clear out the blurriness. She had been flying her landspeeder for three hours and still hadn't reached the end of the White Sea. At least she had run into any trouble, like those Tuscany Raiders, or whatever they were called, that she had heard about at the spaceport. She knew, however, that she would be in trouble even without monsters attacking if she didn't get some sleep soon.
It was completely dark by this point, and she had to run the rist of turning on the lightspeeder lights to see anything at all. Luckily, the navigational system seemed to be just about the only thing really worked like it was supposed to, and she could easily see that she was on the right path.
Now if I could just avoid any run ins with monsters,
she thought to herself, looking around nervously.
After a few more minutes of traveling in the dark, Nona glanced down at the nav computer and noticed that she would be at the edge of the White Sea within a few more minutes, which meant she was only about an hour from where Obi-wan Kenobi supposedly lived. It seemed like she was going to make it one piece after all.
As if summoned by that thought, suddenly a blaster shot zoomed out from the dark and struck the right side of her speeder. Nona gave out a mild curse as she struggled to regain control of the vehicle.
Where had that shot come from?
Another shot zoomed past her head as if to answer her thought, which was quickly followed by another.
I need to find shelter and quick,
Nona thought desperately as the nav computer started beeping incessantly to say the speeder was losing power. Suddenly the engine gave out and the speeder went hard into the ground, throwing Nona from the vehicle. Either by miracle, or by repressed instincts, she rolled as she hit the ground and ended up standing, lightsaber in hand.
She looked down surprised at the lightsaber in her hand, and then up at the approaching creatures. It was still too dark to be able to distinguish them, but they were in the shape of men.
Humans don't make that sound,
she thought as the creatures let out screams and grunts. They were approaching quickly, and clearly didn't look like they wanted to negotiate. Nona realized her one option.
She touched the button on the lightsaber, and instantly the purple blade erupted from the hilt. The entire area was cast in eerie purple light, and the creatures visibly hesitated, before letting out inhuman screams and running at Nona on full speed. As the creatures ran at her, she could see them raising strange sticks, or poles, above their heads.
Just as quickly as the monsters were approaching, Nona could feel her stomach climbing up to her throat. She had been so sure of using the lightsaber, but now she was too scared to even move. All she could do was watch as what was certainly her death come closer and clower.
Just as the first creature reached her, something in Nona snapped. She moved almost by instinct, ducking down and swiping upwards with her lightsaber in a horizontal stroke. It gave out a surprised grunt, and then the two halves of the corpse fell behind Nona. The other creatures, almost reaching her, stopped in fear. Even though their faces were covered by strange masks, she could tell that they were in absolute fear and awe of the weapon she held in her hand.
Nona wasn't quite sure if they would still attack, since they seemed to be stuck in fear, so she slowly advanced them, waving the lightsaber dangerously. When she was within ten feet of the monsters, they turned and fled into the darkness. She stared after where they had ran off into, hoping that no more decided to show up.
When she was finally certain that the creatures wouldn't come back for another visit, she turned her attention to her broken landspeeder, using her lightsaber as light. A quick survey of the speeder told her everything she needed to know, and it was doubtful that she'd be able to fix the damage by herself, let alone continue traveling in it. Just to be certain, however, Nona decided to try and turn it on.
After turning the ignition a few times, with little success, she sat down heavily on the sand, sending up a cloud of dust that caused her to cough.
This is useless,
she thought, despair welling up inside her stomach.
Now I'm going to die out in this wasteland.
She turned off the lightsaber, and was instantly entombed in darkness. It took a bit for her eyes to adjust, but finally she was able to see slightly and looked up into the stars.
They're so beautiful.
All her life she had been wishing to be out amongst the stars, traveling and adventuring.
I got my wish, didn't I?
As she thought this, dispair was slowly replaced by determination.
No, I will
not
die out in this backwards joke of a planet. I will survive this.
As if this guaranteed her safety, Nona stood up and looked at her broken land speeder again. She knew it was unlikely that she would be able to fix it, but trying for a little while was a better alternative than trying to walk the remaining distance. She sat down in the pilot's seat, and tried the ignition. As the engine turned over, and gave a sound very similar to those monsters she had encountered, she desperately thought of everything her father had tried to teach of mechanics.
Desperation seemed to be creeping up slowly in her, when suddenly she was filled with instead a very stable calm. It was as if every concern the she had went away, and Nona instinctively directed this odd calm within her into the landspeeder. For an instant in the back of her head, she thought this was crazy, but this quickly was replaced by acceptance.
Nona could see the insides of the landspeeder clearly, and every part of it stretched out before on a two dimensional grid. Although she knew that the landspeeder was no more alive than a rock, she could almost hear it calling out to her, communicating to her through the calm that resided inside her. For a moment she began to wonder what was happening to her, but it soon went away and was replaced by an ocean of calm inside her.
She quizzically looked at the grid that stood before her eyes, trying to make sense of what the bits of metal were trying to tell her. Nona decided to
reach
out to the metal bits through her mind, but she wasn't quite sure what she was doing. She felt a connection made, and suddenly voices flooded clearly into her mind.
“The stabilizer, the stabilizer, the stabilizer,” the voices kept incessantly repeating.
“What's wrong with the stabilizer?” Nona asked, confused as to what the voices wanted her to do.
“You must reconnect it to the main drive shaft,” was the haunting answer. Nona was confused. She knew that they must be telling the truth, but she had no idea how to connect the stabilizer to the drive shaft.
Even if I did, I don't have the tools.
The voices answered her, but this time it was directly inside her skull, ringing loud and clear.
You must use the Force.
As if hit by the truth, she knew what to do. Nona didn't know how she knew, just that she did. Reaching out through the calm inside her, she touched the spot on the grid she knew to be the stabilizer, and connected it somehow to the driveshaft. Instantly, she could see the parts rebuilding, like a plant growing. Soon it was connected and completely rebuilt, and she could tell that it was fixed.
Just as quickly as it had all happened, she found herself to be back in the pilot seat of the landspeeder, once again in the middle of the darkness on a desert planet. Nona looked around confused, but nothing had really changed, and there was no danger in the area.
Was that a dream? Or am I going crazy...
There was only way to be completely sure, so she tried the ignition. Much to her surprise, the landspeeder immediately started up, and even seemed to be running far better than it had before the attack.
What just happened to me?
was the only thought Nona had in her head, but she decided to not doubt it, and started traveling again towards Obi-wan's hut.
Less than an hour she was at the edge of the White sea, with tall, brown moutains towering over her. In the east the twin suns were starting to rise. How long was in that dream? Nona tried not to dwell to much on those thoughts, however, she needed to get to the hut soon before the suns rose too high. The nav computer gave an estimate of just under ten minutes to her destination.
It was the shortest ten minutes of her life, but when Nona finally arrived at the hut, she was sweating and nearly drank all of her water in her flask.
Couldn't have cut this any closer if I wanted to,
she thought with a grimace as she turned off the landspeeder. Picking up her daypack, and clipping the lightsaber back on her belt, she entered the hut.
“Hello?” She called out, and was greeted by a small echo and then silence.
Her heart sank as she realized that hut was empty.

I'm glad she made to Obi's place
but sad for her since it's empty.

I'm an idiot and I just realized something. You're in the FanForce of Phoenix? I'll probably start going to meetings soon, since I'm moving to Scottsdale from Flagstaff in May. Off tangent, I know, but there you go!
And thanks for the compliments!

RE: The Color of a Lightsaber (a slightly canon tale with original characters, adventure/romance!)
Finally got around to the next part, been busy alot lately.
* * * *
“Hey, honey! Another drink over here!”
Nona turned around to see a half drunk alien waving his empty glass, sneering in her direction. The others at his table laughed and slapped the table, giving her the image of a table full of children.
“Just one?” She asked, not bothering to take the loathing out of her voice. ”At this point I'd think you would just want me to put a tube down your throat. Would that be direct enough for you?” Nona it was dangerous to bait the customer, especially considering somehow this cantina had gained the reputation as the most infamous in Mos Eisley.
“Are you being fresh with me, sugar?” The grotesque alien stood up, drawing his blaster and leveling it at her. A putrid smell rolled off him, almost like a cloud, and there seemed to be almost parasite like tentacles. In the past few months that Nona had worked at this cantina she'd seen all aliens but this one was hands down the worst.
“Me? Of course not.” She tried her sweetest smile and hoped it worked. He was still sneering at her, so she ventured another comment. “Another drink on the house?”
That seemed to do that trick, as it always did. It cut a little bit from her already meager earnings but if it helped her stay alive it was more than worth it in her book. More than once she had considered bringing in her lightsaber to the cantina and teaching some of the more barbaric patrons a lesson or two. That pipe dream never made it past wishes and hopes, Nona knew she was no where near skilled enough to even take on one of these natural brutes.
It was rare for Nona to even take out the lightsaber and look at it in the sanctity of her small room above a butcher's shop, let alone practice what she assumed was good saber technique. The one time she had attempted to practice a bit she was almost discovered by thieves in the dead of night and she had barely made it away with her life.
It had been nearly a year since she had first arrived on the Force forsaken planet called Tantooine, and she had been working nearly nonstop in an attempt to raise enough money to escape the dusty rock. Unfortunately credits are few and far between for cantina maids, and Nona refused to get take a position as a dancer. Many girls she met became dancers, were whisked away and never seen from again.
Most nights Nona was too tired to do anything but stumble back in her room and pass out, but every once and awhile she got the energy to head up to the roof above her bed and look at the stars. Sometimes she liked to pretend that she could see the star that Maenave revolved around. It was on the dark, quiet nights that she could see millions and millions of twinkling, dancing white dots and she would let her mind wander to--
“Hey, honey, you getting those drinks or not?” The harsh voice of the drunk alien cut into her daydreams as she realized she was still standing in the same spot. Nona could feel her cheeks grow hot with embarrassment, as she quickly turned to head back to the bar to grab the drinks.
This just isn't worth it anymore,
She thought desperately.
I need to get off this planet, somehow. I don't even care how anymore.
Nona wished she had enough money to leave, or that Obi-wan had actually been at his damn hut, or that she had never found the lightsaber amongst her dying mother's possessions. Then she would never have even left Maenave.
Warm tears welled up in Nona's eyes, but she forced them back in.
Gotta show a strong face. Can't let them see I'm scared or hurt.
Putting resolve back into her posture, she grabbed the drinks the bartender had slammed on the bar, and headed back to the table.
“This round's on me, boys,” She said, nearly throwing the drinks on the table, and the aliens greedily began to suck on the foam that overflowed the tops of the glasses. One half-heartedly flipped a credit in her direction which she deftly caught, and tucked in her apron's pocket.
Nona turned and started back towards the bar and was halfway there when a hand reached out and grabbed her arm with a grip so hard she stopped dead in her tracks. She looked behind to see who was a hold of her and saw an older looking human male, with a four day beard gray and almost dirty.
“I've been trying to get your attention for ten minutes,” He said, talking almost out of the side of his mouth. “What's it take to get a drink around here?” The circumstances were too much for Nona, who continued to stare at the strange man, not able to move.
Finally she got up the energy to speak. “What did you want?” she politely asked, hoping he would let up his vise grip. He finally did, but continued to stare at her with steel grey eyes.
“I'll just take an ale.” It was almost a grunt, but there was a slight twinkle in his eyes, and a small smirk so Nona didn't feel frightened. She nodded dumbly and went to the bar, returning in almost a daze.
Why did she feel so strange around this man? Why did she suddenly feel safe? There was nothing that screamed safe about him, two blasters were slung casually on his hips. The scars on his face and hands didn't say he had an office job on some Core world. So why did her feelings tell her to stay near him?
“Okay, you're a cute broad,” he said with a bigger grin., “but the whole staring and not talking thing is starting to creep me out.” He stood up and pushed back a chair across from his. “Why don't you take a seat? My name's Ryne. Dal Ryne.”
