. This story takes place 4 years after
Grasping At Dreams
. It’s not really because this needed to follow that story, or that you can’t read it alone—I just really like Jonlin Kos, so I kept it in the same continuity.
---
He slipped out of the bed carefully, trying not to wake the other occupant as he did so. He took another look at the red hair spread over the pillow before turning away and gently pulling the door to behind him so the light from the computer monitor wouldn’t filter through the opening and disturb her sleep.
He sat down, reading the long letter that they’d received, changing their travel plans from Dathomir as he’d originally counted on. He really could hurt Jaina for not giving him the head’s up, but she was concerned with more pressing matters at the moment, which left him here, staring at this letter, his own insecurities hounding him.
“Jacen?” a voice said softly from the doorway, and he turned in his chair to see his wife standing there with a white robe wrapped around herself, the blue light from the screen forming a halo around her. Tenel Ka looked like an angel.
“Did I wake you?” he said, holding out his hand to her. She walked, sylph-like to him, perching on the edge of his chair.
“Your absence did,” she said, looking over his shoulder. “This still concerns you?”
“With the reconstruction and everything? A bit,” he admitted. “I don’t understand why they think I can solve all their problems.”
His wife of two days leaned down and shut the screen off. “Leave trouble for daylight and come back to bed.”
He captured her waist in the darkness, tipping her backwards. “Does that mean we have to go to sleep?”
She sounded amused. “Come and find out.”
Smiling, he followed her back to the bedroom.
---
She woke to sunlight beginning to stream through the window and Tenel Ka, Queen Mother of Hapes, had absolutely no intention of getting out of the bed. Snuggled up under the thick bedspread and pressed up against her husband, she opened her eyes and stole a look at the chronometer. It was, unfortunately, past time for them to get up.
Jacen had an arm possessively wrapped around her waist, under the covers, protecting him from the nip in the morning air. A curtain fluttered in the breeze through the window she’d inadvertently left open the night before, and she allowed herself to lie there for one more happy moment.
It had to be over too soon as her gaze fell back on the chronometer, and she looked over her shoulder at Jacen, his face relaxed in sleep. She tried to roll away from him to slip out of the bed and let him sleep a moment longer, but his grip on her tightened and she saw a mischievous smile light his face and she knew he was awake.
She tried to move from the bed again, but he was insistent with a gentle tug that rolled her over to face him. “Morning,” he said, his eyes still closed.
“Good morning,” she replied.
“Trying to sneak away, are you?” he said. He opened one eye to look at her.
“Possibly,” she said, allowing her fingers to walk their way up his chest. “We should get ready for the day.”
“Hmm. I don’t know that I can move at the moment,” he said. “A beautiful woman dragged me to bed and had her wicked way with me last night.”
Her brilliant, rare smile graced her face, and Jacen leaned forward to kiss her gently. If every morning started with that smile from now on, then every day would be a good one.
She pulled away again, and he let her this time. “Where you going?”
“The shower,” she answered. “We have meetings this afternoon.”
“Want help?”
She threw him a glance over her shoulder as she pulled her robe around herself. “If you help, we will never get out of the house today.”
“I can think of worse things,” he said.
She shook her head no, and he sighed. “I suppose I’ll go fix breakfast then and take my sorrow out on the eggs.”
“Do not set the kitchen on fire,” her voice said from around the corner, and he laughed.
---
Tenel Ka took little time in the shower—since they were already running late, she opted for the sonic shower to keep from having to dry her long hair. She quickly ran a brush through it, smoothing it out and braided several strands to wrap around the rest and contain it at the back of her head. She added a gentle brush of cosmetics to her face as well, something she never would have bothered with or considered before becoming queen.
The days of her warrior armor were long gone, and she pulled on a pair of soft pants and a tunic before heading down the stairs.
Jacen was humming some Ishi Tib tune to himself as he cooked. She saw three pieces of fruit start flying in the air as he juggled them, the spatula also joining them with other pieces of silverware. Reaching a hand out, she used the Force to pull one out of midair, and he turned and smiled. “You are right on time. Breakfast is served.”
They ate their breakfast out on the veranda, enjoying the sunshine of the New Alderaan morning, and could see the sparkling white city of Aldera out several kilometers from the house. Leia and Han had owned this house since well before the Yuuzhan Vong invasion and it had miraculously survived the attack on New Alderaan. Rather than stay in the city, they’d retreated here and left the advisors and attendants in Aldera, hoping to spend at least a little time just to themselves.
That time was unfortunately to be short-lived as a cloud of dust followed a landspeeder towards the house, and Tenel Ka recognized the driver as Jonlin Kos, her main assistant who never seemed to have mastered the art of sitting still. He hurried out of the landspeeder and approached the veranda, standing right outside the hedge and looking up at them where they enjoyed their breakfast. “Your Majesty. Your Highness. I have come to escort you to New Aldera.”
“Thank you, Jonlin,” Tenel Ka said. “Have you eaten yet? Jacen has prepared breakfast.”
“I have not, Your Majesty, but it would be inappropriate for me to join you,” Jonlin said politely.
“Hardly,” Jacen said, rising. “I’ve not had a shower yet, so you come up here and have some breakfast and you can brief Tenel Ka on the day’s events while you eat.”
Kos opened his mouth to say something, and Tenel Ka held up a hand. “Jonlin, you have assisted us in many tasks in our time together. Please, come and eat.”
The little man bowed, and sat as Jacen went inside the house. “Thank you, Your Majesty.” She handed him a plate, and he scooped the remaining eggs onto it before digging into the meal. “His Highness has two meetings this afternoon, which you will be in attendance for, plus a tour of New Aldera. You also have a meeting this afternoon that was requested for you alone.”
Tenel Ka frowned. “Who requested such a meeting?”
Kos stopped his eating. “A group of Alderaani citizens who claim they require the assistance of the crown with a delicate issue, and refuse to deal with anyone but you, Your Majesty. They have been vetted as upstanding citizens, and requested an audience with Your Majesty.”
---
“Look,” Jacen said, spreading his hands out on the table in a gesture that indicated he was trying to contain his frustration after nearly two hours of this. “Having me as prince of Alderaan is not going to solve your problems.” He stood from his chair, and gestured out towards the window, towards the parts of New Aldera that were still being reconstructed, nearly three years after the final Yuuzhan Vong resistance forces were driven from the sector. “You don’t need a prince. You need a government body that’s going to solve this on their own. One person can’t just fix this with a wave of their hand. Not even a Jedi.”
“But we need a leader, Your Grace,” Alisa Combe said. The leader of the New Alderaan Interim Council, she sat across from them at the table, her long hair nearly reaching to the floor. “We have tried presenting ourselves as the leaders of Alderaan, but it’s not working. They need someone else. They need a single, legitimate voice. They need a hero.”
“They want a hero,” Tenel Ka interjected. “They need a government body. What the people want is not always what is good for them.”
“The Alderaani people know what they want,” Combe said. “With this overwhelming of a response, shouldn’t they have what they want?”
Jacen turned. “What they want is not going to do them any good.”
---
They strolled through the magnificent gardens of New Aldera, arm in arm, listening to their guide speak about the specimens of plants that had been saved from the Death Star’s destruction through the botanical gardens of other worlds. “Grass paintings are being sown for the first time in ten years this year,” their guide said. He continued on, and Jacen and Tenel Ka fell back into the group that had accompanied them, Jonlin Kos stepping in between them and some of the Alderaani citizens that had accompanied them so they could talk by themselves.
“This is getting old fast,” Jacen said, rubbing his face with a hand.
She gently linked arms with him, staying within a reasonable distance from the guide so they wouldn’t obviously look like they weren’t paying attention to the tour. “Politics is never easy.”
“They won’t take no for an answer,” he said. “I don’t get it. What part of no don’t they understand?”
“Politicians also rarely take no for an answer,” she said quietly. “They will block out anything you say until you acquiesce.”
“I just wish there was an easy way out of this,” he said.
“I could forbid you,” she said, a twinkle in her eye, although her face remained ever serious. “But that would cause a diplomatic incident and would not be a promising beginning to our life together.”
The guide had stopped, still speaking about how they’d replanted with native Alderaani plants. “It was necessary to extirpate some of the plants native to New Alderaan to make these gardens into a reality, but in keeping with Alderaani customs, we have also incorporated a great many into our gardens of new and old. Your Majesty, Your Grace, do you have any questions?”
Tenel Ka shook her head. “No, your presentation has been quite clear. Please, continue.”
The guide continued on, describing the interior of the Botanical Research Labs, and they listened more attentively.
By the time they reached the main welcome center, it was time for lunch at the restaurant at the Botanical Gardens, which featured some of the bounty of the gardens and afforded them relative privacy. Jonlin Kos ushered the Alderaani diplomats away, informing them that it was still Her Majesty and His Highness’ honeymoon and they were going to have lunch in piece. He was standing guard outside the door after one of the Alderaanians had the hubris to attempt to interrupt them, but Kos was a force of nature and had a will to match. The diplomat was sorely disappointed, but Jacen and Tenel Ka both took breaths of relief.
“You have a meeting with who?” Jacen asked, taking a bite of the salad that ended the meal.
“A group no doubt wishing to discuss your ascendancy to the chair of Viceroy, and thinking that appealing to my feminine ego, they can get further,” she said. “They may not be like those we have already met—we could find allies in them.”
He polished off his salad and set his fork down. “I think I have another tour this afternoon—Aldera’s business district. Are you taking Jonlin with you?”
“I may require his diplomatic skills,” she said with a sigh, setting down her own silverware. “Enjoy your tour.”
“Not likely,” Jacen said, standing and moving around the table to perch on the arm of the chair. “Be careful. Something’s bothering me about this and I can’t put my finger on it.”
“I agree,” she said, looking up at him.
He leaned down, swiftly kissing her, and her hand cupped his face to hold on a moment longer. “I love you,” she whispered.
“I love you too,” he returned with a smile as the door creaked open and Jonlin Kos stepped in.
“Your Majesty, Your Highness, you asked me to inform you when an hour had passed.” Kos was fidgeting again, and Jacen guess that a few seconds had already passed beyond the hour mark. Kos looked a bit more frazzled than usual, and Jacen had to wonder if the Alderaanians had been harassing him. Leaning down to kiss Tenel Ka again, Jacen rose. “I’ll see you tonight back at the house?”
“Tonight,” she said.
---
“Your Majesty,” Aarin Nost said, bowing to Tenel Ka as she entered the room. The suite had been specially prepared for the Hapan delegation that had followed her to Alderaan, but only Jonlin followed her into the room. “I thank you for meeting with us. We are part of the moiety of the Tesoin family.”
“We are afraid we did not have a chance to review your message to us,” Tenel Ka said, taking the seat he gestured to. “We would ask why you requested our presence alone?”
“Your Majesty,” Nost said, “We do not wish your husband to take the position of Viceroy of Alderaan. I am meeting with you on behalf of Jani Tesoin, who unfortunately could not make this meeting. Jani is a member of a noble House of Alderaan who has a right to the throne.”
That one statement gave Tenel Ka an idea of where the conversation was going. “How is this possible?”
“Ah, I see your husband has not filled you in on this part of Alderaani history. Right before the Empire came into power, the throne was in contention,” Nost said. “Many of the noble houses claimed that Bail Organa had a spurious claim to the throne, one of these being the Tesoins. The Senate decided that Organa had the legitimate claim to the throne, but it’s widely believed this was because Organa agreed to champion the Naboo government during a blockade of the planet by the now defunct Trade Federation. Jani Tesoin is the niece of the original challenger, and is next in line for the throne. Many would agree that she has the legitimate claim to it.”
Tenel Ka exchanged a glance with Jonlin Kos. “We believe our husband does not intend to take the position of Viceroy, but neither will he allow anyone else to claim that position. Alderaan will ultimately be more stable as a democracy.”
“That is not for you to decide, Your Majesty,” one of Nost’s men rumbled, and Tenel Ka felt a tingle go down her spine, accompanied by a wariness she could not explain.
Kos bristled. “You will speak to Her Majesty with more respect.”
The aide was going to fire a rejoinder back at Kos, but Nost stopped him with a gesture. “Your Majesty, we must change His Grace’s mind.”
“He will not decide differently,” Tenel Ka said. “Alderaan needs a democracy. They need an advisory council—the planet is small enough to allow such a council with a minimum of bureaucracy. But the Interim Council will not last much longer.”
Her danger sense began to prickle more strongly, and she rose. “We are afraid this conversation must come to a close.”
The aide moved, knocking Kos on the jaw as Nost drew his blaster on Tenel Ka. Kos amazingly stayed on his feet, launching himself at the man who had thrown the punch at him.
Tenel Ka had been queen for years, but her skills had not diminished. She knocked the blaster that Nost had drawn on her aside, slamming the palm of her hand into his face. Kos was valiantly attempting to stay upright, but the second aide in the room knocked him in the back of the head with a full bottle of Alderaani wine, breaking it on Kos’ skull. Kos fell still as a blue blast made contact with the Queen Mother of Hapes, and she fell to the ground.
Nost pressed a data rod into Kos’ hand. “Let’s go.”
Five kilometers away, Jacen’s head snapped up as his wife’s presence suddenly flared as she used her Force abilities, then fell silent.
---
Jacen set Jonlin Kos upright, and the little man’s eyes blinked, bleary and lethargic. He smelled strongly of blood and alcohol, and he seemed to be concentrating hard on remembering what had happened to him. He brushed a hand against his face, staring in wonder at the mixed colors of the red wine and the dried blood that had spilled from his nose. “My stars—Your—Master Jedi, they took Her Majesty.”
“Who?” Jacen demanded, more fiercely than he intended with the semi-conscious man. “Jonlin, who?”
“Aarin Nost—he wants someone else to be Viceroy—“ Kos looked confused, staring down at his hands. “What’s this?”
Jacen took the data rod from Kos, turning towards Combe, who had accompanied him in his frantic rush to get here. “I need a datapad.”
She pulled one from her bag, and Jacen plugged the rod into the datapad. The message that appeared was short and to the point. His face grew stony. “Your Highness, what is it?” Kos asked.
“They want me to take the position of Viceroy and then abdicate in favor of Jani Tesoin,” Jacen said. “Who the hell is she?”
“One of the challengers to the throne of Viceroy,” Combe explained. “She is known for unorthodox maneuvers.”
Jacen carefully set down the datapad before rapidly brushing past Combe, barely stopping before the guards that stood before the door. “Your Grace, you cannot go after her like this. You have no jurisdiction.”
He turned on his heel, furious. “I am a Jedi. I don’t need your jurisdiction.”
“Becoming Viceroy will allow you a freedom of movement you cannot enjoy as a Jedi,” Combe warned, and Jacen saw the slight shake of her head she gave to the guards.
He pulled his lightsaber and ignited it, eyes firmly focused on the guards. “Move, or I will make you move.”
They moved. “And where do you intend to go, Your Grace?” Combe said, a hint of anger coloring her voice.
Jacen’s eyes flashed darkly at her, and the look on his face would have quelled opposition from all but the most stalwart of men. “I’m going to find my wife.”
---
Tenel Ka woke, hearing the first sense that returned to her consciousness, and the sounds of those fighting nearby met her ears. She kept her eyes closed as feeling slowly returned to her body.
She made the determination that she was lying on a floor—a cold one at that, and that she was chained to something nearby—a post of some sort, she thought, barely moving her fingers to brush against it, the texture of painted duracrete easily recognizable.
The voices around her lowered, and she couldn’t hear them anymore. The Force seemed to have left her for the time being—being stunned kept her from being able to concentrate well, and she kept her eyes closed, sending out one single word.
Jacen.
---
Jacen.
His name echoed in his mind, and he nearly sagged in relief that she was, at least, conscious and aware of her surroundings.
I’m here,
he sent back as best he could, unsure of how much was coherently getting through to her.
He closed his eyes, stopping in the middle of the hallway outside what had at one time been Tesoin’s office, hoping for a clue. The room was dark, as night had fallen on Aldera, and his desperation was growing more urgent.
Tenel Ka, where are you?
Confusion was all he was managing to get from her, and he focused, reaching out to the Force, letting it fill him in a way that he’d never considered before—desperateness fueling every bit of power he had into finding her, and he knew he would be lighting up like a beacon to every Force-sensitive within three systems, but he didn’t care.
His feet took him further into the office, and he felt Tenel Ka reach out to the Force herself, guiding him towards her. Her strength was returning, and he felt her ready herself.
He found himself in front of a blank wall, and stared at it for a moment, not comprehending. Reaching out a hand, he knocked a knuckle against it, the hollow sound meeting his ears.
Subtlety had fallen by the wayside considering the circumstances, and Jacen ignited his lightsaber, the green glow lighting up the dark room. He plunged it into the wall, creating an opening. He lifted the now twisted and melted metal with the Force, carefully setting it aside, and stepped through to a hallway that was damp with moisture hanging in the air. Green mold clung to the walls in the light of his blade, and he moved down the hallway, descending into the depths of what could have been a perfect world.
The tunnels curved and kept going deeper, until Jacen had no idea where he was under Aldera, if he was still under Aldera at all and not under the ocean floor.
The tunnel split into two separate tunnels, and he could vaguely see doors down either path.
Tenel Ka, lead me to you.
He could feel her down the tunnel to the right, and he followed, just as what amounted to a Force explosion threw itself into his senses.
He sped up his pace.
---
Tenel Ka, lead me to you.
He was close, she could feel it, but for now, she had more important things on her mind. Her eyes still closed, she reached out with the Force to sense the movement around her as someone approached her with evident malice.
She’d rarely relied on the Force as an apprentice, but for now, she needed it in a way she’d never needed it before. With a shout and a yank fueled by the Force, the chain restraining her to the pole snapped.
Her leg shot out, catching the man behind his ankle, rolling upwards as she did so. He fell, and her foot connected solidly with his temple. It took her less than two seconds, to do so, and she snatched for his blaster, firing two quick shots as she rolled behind the pole, hoping the Force was guiding her aim, and judging by the cry of pain across the room, it was.
Jacen’s sense was growing stronger in the back of her mind as she popped back out of her corner, taking three more shots, pegging two of her attackers with stun bolts. She wanted them alive—they had to stop this madness.
Two live blaster shots whizzed past her corner, and she felt one of her captors moving around the room. Taking a deep breath, she swung her arm up, squeezed the trigger and watched him drop to the ground.
She heard shouts, the familiar hum of a lightsaber and Jacen’s angry voice as he deflected shots that had suddenly increased in number and frequency. “Tenel Ka!”
They were sufficiently occupied with the arrival of the Master Jedi, and Tenel Ka moved out from the protection of her corner, firing her stun shots at the backs of the men, who suddenly found themselves under attack from two superior forces. Tenel Ka kept firing, and Jacen moved forward, taking down the last one standing with a punch to the face over his lightsaber.
Jacen took a deep breath, and met her eyes over the devastation they’d wrought. She noticed blood soaking through his arm where a blaster bolt had come too close, and walked over to him. She ripped a piece of material from her tunic, her sore wrist protesting silently as she wrapped it around his arm.
His tired eyes looked down at her. “You okay?”
She nodded. “You?”
“I’m okay now,” he said.
She just stared at him for a moment, and he suddenly wrapped his arms around her, and she buried her face in his chest. “I’ve never been so scared in my life,” he said hollowly.
“We are both all right,” she reminded him softly. “We are both safe.”
He kissed the top of her head gently. “Come on, let’s get out of here.”
---
The Alderaani police force met them outside the building, and Jacen pointed out the tunnel to them, allowing them to run inside to gather up their attackers. Alisa Combe had come with them. “Your Majesty. Your Grace.”
“Consider this my official refusal to take the throne,” Jacen said. He gestured back towards the building where the police had created a perimeter. “This is what can result when you have one person in charge. Would you have really wanted someone like Tesoin taking charge if something had happened? Someone who was not only corrupt, but stupid as well?”
Combe inclined her head. “I will take your refusal to the Interim Council when it opens in a few hours. I do not know how they will react, but Tesoin will not be allowed to take the throne.”
The medics had arrived, and were anxiously awaiting the two. “Remember this,” Jacen said. “It takes a lot more to corrupt a group of people than it does just one.”
---
Jonlin Kos had evincely been given his instructions. Her Majesty and His Highness were
not
to be disturbed unless the Emperor himself had come back to life and was demanding their presence to keep him from killing everyone they knew.
If there was one thing Jonlin Kos was good at, it was keeping people away.
“No, you may not see Her Majesty,” he informed Alisa Combe. “This was meant to be Her Majesty’s honeymoon, and you are most certainly not going to disturb them now.”
The woman pursed her lips. “Not for anything?”
“Not for anything,” Jonlin said. “If you have a message to give them, you can give it to me, and I will see that they get it in good time.”
Combe obviously thought about trying to circumvent him, but as Jonlin stood firm, she changed her mind, turning and leaving.
Smiling, Jonlin returned to his work.
---
Sunlight was streaming through the window, and Tenel Ka wrapped her arm around Jacen’s chest, holding on. His eyes were still closed, but he made a sound of satisfaction.
The bacta patch on his arm was beginning to peel off, and she gently smoothed the corner back down to keep it from coming up. “Good morning,” Jacen said, his voice rumbling deep in his chest.
“Good morning,” she answered, lying her head on his chest.
“Do we have to get up?” he asked.
“Not unless we want to,” she said.
He rolled over on his side, wrapping his own arm around her waist and pulling her close. “Good. I have no intention of getting out of this bed.”
His eyes closed again, and they lay there for a few moments more. “Jacen,” she whispered.
“Hmm?”
“I love you.”
His eyes opened, shining down at her, and his mouth fell on hers. “I love you, too.” A wicked twinkle appeared in his eyes. “So, what are we going to do today?”
“I have a few ideas,” she said, and she smiled at him, that beautiful smile that he lived for, and he knew it was going to be a good day.

RE: Every Day is a Good One (J/TK short story)
Wow, a day in the life.... I think they may very well decide to stay in their bedrooms forever if stepping out of it can be as hazardous as this.
I really like the title and thought how nice they still felt that way at the end of their incredibly hectic day.
Well done

“Do not set the kitchen on fire,” her voice said from around the corner
That made me laugh.
Action! Yes! I love how you wrote the action.
He turned on his heel, furious. “I am a Jedi. I don’t need your jurisdiction.”
Now that was a powerful line.
Awesome writing and description. Great characterization. Your writing just comes alive.
Your ending was brilliant. You ended the story the same way you started it. It really brings a feeling of completedness. Excellent.
Great fic!

Yay, you finished it!
Lovely work, Carr! You used all the challenge words so appropriately that they didn’t even stick out in my mind.
I liked how you combined both romance and action. There wasn’t too much of one.
A fantastic sequel

RE: Every Day is a Good One (J/TK short story)
Very, very nice, Carr! I loved the 'quiet' scenes at the beginning, with Jacen and Tenel Ka just loafing about a bit and not doing too much. And oh, that kidnapping didn't go too well, did it?
Rule one of Jedi kidnapping: Ysalamiri. Otherwise, just turn yourself over to the authorities.

Considering what I have planned for them in the story for next month...I figured they were going to need a break.
Rule one of Jedi kidnapping: Ysalamiri. Otherwise, just turn yourself over to the authorities.
Hence Jacen's 'stupid' remark. They weren't intending to necessarily hurt her, just scare Jacen into giving up the throne...but we all see how much more willpower Jacen has than that. Maybe Combe was even involved with this....hmmmm.....

, Yes! This was for the challenge at the Crystal Reef Palace Auditorium (the link's at the top of the page). The words were spurious, hubris, evince, moiety and extirpate.

Awww... I loved the beginning and the end mushy scenes (the circle is complete)!
Jacen’s eyes flashed darkly at her, and the look on his face would have quelled opposition from all but the most stalwart of men. “I’m going to find my wife.”
Ooo...
*shiver*
Go Jacen!
A wonderfully written piece. I enjoyed reading it very much.
