Title:
Negotiations
Author(s):
Maryaminx
Timeframe:
Post-NJO
Characters:
Jaina, Kyp, OCs
Genre:
It will breed an epic, I'm sure.
Keywords:
Jaina, Kyp, reality
Summary:
Even good things can have bad endings.
Notes:
I didn’t want to write a bad Kyp story, but I had an irresistible bunny, so I compromised by making both Jaina and Kyp bad. It was written on the fly, so I will perfectly understand it if any of you have an irresistible urge to flame. Also, I'm useless at titles.
Negotiations
Post-NJO
Nearly there,
she thought to herself.
Almost--
“But not quite.”
She jerked, and there he stood, arms crossed across his chest, eyes furious.
“I don’t have to ask what you were doing, coming in so late, Goddess.” His voice was harsh and almost sibilant. “You were with him, weren’t you, checking on your...
x-wing.
”
“Oh, Durron?” She spat back. “And I don’t have to ask what you were doing, being up so late. No doubt you were in some lower city bar, making
business negotiations
.”
They stood there, glaring at one another, until Jaina finally caved.
“You’ll wake the children, Durron. We’ll finish this tomorrow.”
She headed for the bedroom. He headed for the couch.
The romance had been whirlwind, the passion a raging tempest. They had eloped very, very secretly, and had started a family feud.
And now, nearly fifteen years later, they were starting one of their own.
They were never violent--not too much. By some unspoken agreement they never used the force, and instead traded physical blows and shouts. Bruises and cuts they couldn’t hide, they healed. Somehow, they liked the pain. It made Jaina feel real again. It made Kyp feel like he was finally paying for the happiness he had once had.
The children didn’t know, at least not until the next morning, when they arose to find their parents engaged in a loud debate.
Dataña rubbed her eyes, bit her lip, grabbed her bag, and wordlessly strode from the apartment. She was fifteen, and the very image of her mother.
Anakin, ten, and a brown-eyed Kyp, stood staring for a moment, but grabbed a bagel and followed Dataña’s example.
Jericho, the youngest, eight and somehow identical to her Uncle Luke, silently started to cry, but followed after her siblings.
“Now look what you’ve done!” Jaina screamed at Kyp.
“Me? Why are you blaming me?” He shouted back. “
You’re
the one who--”
“Get out! Just get out!” She flung a hand out, pointing toward the door. “Go, and never come back.”
“Fine, I’ll go,” he snarled. “I’ll go and you can get back to the life you
wanted
, you know, with that General from that Core World. Fine. Marry him, have his children. Like Jericho isn’t his already.”
Her mouth dropped, fury splattered across her face. “You-- Like you haven’t been with that redhead from New Alderaan for ten years. And Jericho--”
“Yes, I know,” Kyp’s sneer was one of malicious glee. “I wouldn’t have needed that redhead had I not walked in and seen you and that man in a rather
compromising position
. And of course I know Jericho isn’t mine. She hasn’t got half the force power of the other two.
“
Eight years
,” He continued. “Eight years, I’ve been waiting for you to come home and stop all of this. I keep telling myself, maybe tonight she won’t leave. Maybe tonight she’ll stay here, in my arms. Maybe---”
She threw herself at him, hands hooked into claws. “Maybe I would’ve if I hadn’t known that every night you were waiting for me to leave, so you could go to her. If I hadn’t known, hadn’t seen.”
He grasped her wrist and held her away from him. “It’s always about
you
, isn’t it. I’ve tried,
Goddess
. I’ve tried, but every time you’ve spit on my efforts. I’m sick of this.”
She turned away, face pale and utterly still. ‘Then go. Have your female. Just leave me and my children alone. Just go.”
“Fine,” he snarled again, spun, and strode from the apartment.
He was long gone by the time her shoulders started to shake, and she began to sob.

Dang. This is very... different. In a good way, though.
Jericho, the youngest, eight and somehow identical to her Uncle Luke
I don't know if you meant it or not, but this line conjures up some very unpleasant images of whom Jaina might have been cheating with...
Very nice, though. It's orginal, if albeit rather short. I liked it.

*blinks* I was
not
expecting to read a fic like this when I clicked on this link, but it's very realistic with the emotions you're portraying.
I happen to like K/J, but this...
To be honest, I like the way its written, and it's very powerful, but the context... I have to say I'm not a big fan of the premis.
A well written vig, but, to be honest, not really my style.
Points for trying something new and untouched, for the most part.

I think its great. They were together but something happened, more like two people happened, and they fell apart.
I just find it interesting that it turns violent. I can picture Kyp having more bruises. That girl can probably pack a wallop.
with that General from that Core World. Fine. Marry him, have his children. Like Jericho isn’t his already
Jaina, Jaina, Jaina. & Poor Kyp, knowing the youngest is not his. Poor Jericho. She probably thinks it's all her fault.
What I'd like to know is who strayed first? One of them started this mess. And the poor kids have to suffer. Cruel but very realistic.
Nice job.

WHOA! Insano!
I liked it though, but it was sooo sad! They're relationship fell apart! And they're both cheating!
Jericho, the youngest, eight and somehow identical to her Uncle Luke
I agree with Den, lol, that sentence could be twisted around in so many
wrong
ways....hehehe
There could be more to this! Ever think of adding some more possibly?

, Eek!
I didn't even notice that line. I was thinking how Leia and Han had Anakin, who looked nothing like them... As for its length, everything looks longer in Word.
Jade_Max
, I like K/J but I was listening to Karma (Alicia Keys) and I got this idea. I
would
have writting it J/J but I didn't want to look like a Jag basher.
Lola64
, ah yes, poor Jericho... Parents can be so selfish, can't they? Thanks for the praise!
C3SoloP0
, this had been meant to be a one-shot, but I might make it longer. We'll see.

A/N:: A couple of things: First, I can't remember how old Han is, so I just made him 11 years older than Luke and Leia. Second, Coruscant is still the city-planet. So there, NJO. I hope you guys enjoy!
Jaina Solo-Durron strode up the ramp of her shuttle, muttering every curse she knew under her breath. Three days. Three entire, Sith-forsaken days.
Already having second thoughts?
A sarcastic voice asked in the back of her mind.
Shut up,
she ordered it. She took a deep breath. She could do this. This was what she’d been wanting, wasn’t it?
The Star Destroyer she’d been commissioned to command hung in the sky above her. She’d rather have taken her x-wing up, but apparently that didn’t have enough dignity for the Commander of the
Dolorosa
. So she took the shuttle.
She nodded to the crew but waved away their efforts to help her or offer her food or drink. She just wanted to get there, do her duty, and sleep.
Jaina mentally reviewed the stats for the Destroyer; over a thousand metres long with a crew of just under seven thousand. She sighed quietly to herself, reaching for the thrill of excitement at finally commanding her own ship after the war. It wasn’t there.
It would be undignified to scream in frustration and slap her head against the transparasteel viewport. So she satisfied herself by imagining slow, painful deaths for...well, who else would she be imagining slow, painful deaths for?
“We land in fifteen standard minutes, Commander Solo.”
She nodded at the man and continued to stare out the window at the rebuilt Coruscant. Even after all those years, it still didn’t seem quite real. She could close her eyes and remember the way it had been, Imperial Centre and then the seat of the New Republic. Now it was just a recovering city, Coruscant, apropos of nothing.
She felt the slight bump as they sat down, and was on her feet before the crew could rush to help her. She waved them away with a tight smile, but decided to let them carry her bags.
Dignity
, she reminded herself.
Dignity.
It was a concept her mother had tried to drill into her, with little success.
She glanced down at the document she had clutched in her fist, and gave a wry chuckle. It was an Imperial document, called the “Quality of Family Certificate.” It would have provided her, in the case of low scores, a second chance at being officer. The names written on it--Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia Organa, among others--would have impressed anyone.
She didn’t need it, so she wondered why she carried it. Perhaps it was to remind herself of who she really was. Maybe it was just nostalgia. Either way, she crumpled it and stuffed it into a pocket.
You don’t need it,
she reminded herself.
“Commander?” She glanced up a slight, nervous man with bright red hair.
“Yes?” She replied.
“Would you like to review your crew first, or be escorted to you cabin?”
“My cabin first, please.”
Just pretend you’re still the Goddess,
Jaina reminded herself. Not Yun-Harla, though, of course. Yun-Yammka, perhaps. That was, after all, Jacen’s deity.
They strode along one of the many, generic passageways and stopped in front of a generic door.
“This is your cabin, Commander. If anything is not to your liking, please contact me and I will set it aright.”
She nodded and he keyed the door open. They set her bags down just inside the door and let her be.
She strolled carefully around the large quarters. They were a trifle excessive, but she had expected that.
“Dignity,” she finally said aloud to herself. She tried to laugh and set about to unpacking.
“Commander Solo. Jaina.”
Jaina looked up and smiled at the tall blonde man. “General Barcka! What a pleasant surprise!”
Actually, it was neither pleasant nor a surprise. She hid this, however, no matter the green eyes scolding her in the back of her mind.
He bowed formally, then extended a hand. “How is your new command? Are the ship and its crew satisfactory?”
She nodded, grasped his hand, and smiled again. “I am pleased to serve the Galactic Alliance, in whatever manner it chooses.”
Dignity...
He frowned. “That doesn’t sound like you, Jaina. Do you really like it?”
Other lovers gave flowers and candy. This one gave battleships.
She grinned at him, trying to bring the Solo sparkle into her eyes. “Of course I like it.
I
love
it. I’m just trying to act like a Commander. It’s a lot different from being a squad leader, you know.”
He grinned back, relieved. “Yes, I remember my first command. It was quite an experience.”
By all standards, thirty-five was old for a first command, but Jaina had preferred the thrill of flying in her own squad. But age was getting to her, and as she slowed, she began to prefer leading to doing.
She laughed to herself. Like thirty-five was ancient. Her father still showed very few signs of aging, even at 70. Barcka smiled back at her, thinking that she was smiling because of him.
Let him believe that,
she decided, and offered to give him a tour. He accepted her offer, and she led him through the bridge. It was obvious he was familiar with this crew and ship, so she asked him if he had once commanded it.
“Yes,” he replied. “Just after the war. It was my first,” he smiled, “just like it is for you.”
She smiled back at him, mouth and cheeks beginning to get sore from all of the forced cheerfulness. General Jonn Barcka was an amazing man and an even better lover, but there were times when all she wanted to do was get away.
She promised herself a run in the sims to cheer her up later.
Dataña had never been so angry in her life. Of course, there were worse places to be--Yavin IV came to mind--but dumped with her
uncle Jacen?!
Despite her appearance, her personality was almost identical to her father’s. Sith, sometimes she even made him look tame. And as far as dabbling in the dark side went...
She huffed and blew the bangs out of her eyes, unaware of how the gesture brought back memories of Jaina to Jacen, from before.
Before the war, before the marriage, before, before...
Jacen passed a hand over his eyes and sighed. Why, again, did Jaina have to leave Dataña with him? Where was Kyp? Where was Jaina going? And what was he supposed to do with a moody, fifteen-year-old, female version of Kyp Durron? At least he didn’t have the other two, he consoled himself.
“Tahiri!” He called back into the apartment. She came padding out, feet bare as usual.
“Yeah?” She asked. Then she spotted Dataña. “Uh, Jacen, just because I’m your roomie doesn’t mean I have to baby-sit.”
“I know,” he replied. “I just wanted you to know she’d be here. Try not to give her too much grief, okay?” He begged Data. “I need her to pay the other half of the rent.”
Data rolled her eyes, but nodded. “Alright, Uncle Jacen. I’ll behave.”
“Good. I’ll show you your room and give you the one credit tour. But first...Where’s your dad?”
Her glare told him everything he needed to know.
Mara was about to commit infanticide. And after that, she was going to do whatever killing your niece is called. Luke gave her a sympathetic glance, but slipped away before united forces of Mother and Son could hold him accountable.
She surveyed the two children before her. Anakin, ten, with a firm grip on his younger sister’s hand. The girl--Jericho, she thought--had two fingers stuck in her mouth, even though she was all of eight.
Mara exchanged glances with Ben--
You take them. No, you take them. I’m your mother.
You
take them.
Ben sighed heavily and motioned to the two. “Come on, then,” he said, trying to sound cheerful. “Let’s show you to your rooms.”
They cautiously followed him down the corridor, and Mara stared after them. Jaina had vowed never to bring her children to Yavin. What had changed her mind?
And what in the world was she supposed to do with two home-sick kids?
He stared out the viewport of his small cruiser but didn’t see anything. He didn’t see the sun of the small, insignificant system, didn’t see the small, lonely planet that was the sole occupant of that system. All he could see were the blazing red letters of the documents she’d sent to him.
They were clutched in his fist and he tried to look at them, tried to set them down. All he could do was stare, motionless, sightless from his ship.
So she had done it. He’d thought that perhaps a few days to think it through would have brought her to her senses. He’d thought that she’d realise she needed him, and he needed her.
Guilt, though, rose in his throat like bile. Yes, she had borne a child not of his seed. Yes, she had been unfaithful for eight years. But he had still repaid her in kind; the woman that Jaina had accused him of sleeping with wasn’t the only one he had taken.
Would it help if I told you I didn’t enjoy it?
He begged the darkness of space. But he knew it wouldn’t. It didn’t even appease his own conscience. He had sworn never to betray her again, and he had broken that oath. Many, many times.
He wondered where she had put the children. Out of his reach, likely, if they would even come if he asked them too.
He knew Jericho was not his. He knew it, had flung it at Jaina, the final evidence in his case against her. But force-blast it, he still loved the child he had raised for eight years. He wondered if she was all right, wondered if she knew where he was.
Wondered if she knew who her father was.
General Jonn Barcka. Tall, blonde, blue-eyed, a Republic version of Jagged Fel, without the moral backbone. He had taken another man’s wife to bed, and Kyp knew that Jaina hadn’t been the only one. She’d just been the most permanent.
Now Jaina had what he hadn’t been able to give her: a career, a position, and what he knew had always been important: the little things. He’d tried, force knows he’d tried, but candy and hugs and flowers were not in his nature and he’d felt like a ronto in a waltz.
He reached for her, but her shields were tight against her. She wasn’t on Coruscant anymore. So she’d actually gotten that commission from the
Dolorosa
. He didn’t want to hurt her further by telling her that she wasn’t the only one of his toys he’d put in that position, and that the crew would know why she was there. Jaina could be the most brilliant commander in the world, but the crew would consider her a useless pet, given a ship as a gift.
Jaina
was
a brilliant commander. Why she hadn’t been promoted already was beyond his knowledge. And the thought of the leers the crew would give her behind her back was enough for him to bite his lips hard enough to draw blood.
He stuffed the papers under his seat. He wasn’t going to sign them. Not yet.

Outstanding post.
I'm glad you continued it. Great writing.
She smiled back at him, mouth and cheeks beginning to get sore from all of the forced cheerfulness. General Jonn Barcka was an amazing man and an even better lover, but there were times when all she wanted to do was get away.
She's just not happy with anyone is she? Does she even know what she wants?
And to do what she wants she dumps her kids with everyone else? As a mom I have to say "Shame on you Jaina."
And the thought of the leers the crew would give her behind her back was enough for him to bite his lips hard enough to draw blood.
He stuffed the papers under his seat. He wasn’t going to sign them. Not yet.
Poor Kyp. He really wants to work things out with her. Maybe she'll wake up and see what the heck she's doing to her family. But she's Jaina, so I highly doubt that.

No, no, and yes. I have certain...experience with mothers of that type. Of course, she would rationalise it by saying that the children need to be trained, and that Yavin IV is the place to do it. As far as Data... I'm still working on figuring that out.
Poor Kyp. He really wants to work things out with her. Maybe she'll wake up and see what the heck she's doing to her family. But she's Jaina, so I highly doubt that.
It'll happen eventually. She just has to grow up first.
