And now, unto the story... Title: Bonds of Blood Characters: Jacen Solo, Tenel Ka, and more. Type: AU Era: Roughly eight years post-NJO Genre: General Summary: Typical Hapan madness. Author: JD. Feedback: Want it, need it, crave it- clear enough? Bonds of Blood Jacen Solo felt the cool stone of the balcony under his bare feet and the warm sun on his bare chest. He’d never been a fan of mornings, but if he had a few more like this one, he decided he wouldn’t mind at all. Running a hand through his tousled hair, he took a deep breath, enjoying the fresh air of Hapes. “Friend Jacen, would you care for a cup of caf?” Tenel Ka’s voice drifted out onto the balcony. Jacen turned to regard his ‘friend’ with a trademark Solo grin. “I’d love a cup of caf...Your Majesty.” He winked at her, his grin broadening. Tenel Ka scowled at Jacen as she handed him his morning caf. “’Your Majesty’? That’s how you see me, Jacen?” “So long as you insist on referring to me as your ‘friend’, yes,” he replied, taking a sip of his steaming caf. “You are insufferable,” Tenel Ka groaned good-naturedly. “It’s genetic; ask my mother,” Jacen answered with a little laugh. Tenel Ka allowed a rare smile as she strode up to Jacen and wrapped her one arm around his bare waist. Their lips met in a gentle kiss a moment later. The queen leaned into Jacen’s embrace, enjoying the comforting sensations that flooded through her as his arms slid around her own waist. “Your Majesty, are you awake?” The voice of a female attendant broke the comfortable silence of Tenel Ka’s balcony. Tenel Ka disentangled herself from Jacen’s arms, a frown forming on her face. “I will be out in a moment,” she answered her attendant in stern voice. “You may begin laying out my clothes,” she added. “Of course, Majesty.” “You have to go,” Jacen said softly. Tenel Ka could only nod. Sucking in a deep breath, the Queen Mother departed the balcony. Jacen quickly downed the rest of his caf then headed inside. It wouldn’t be proper to stand outside in only his sleep pants for much longer, he chuckled. Hapans loved scandal and gossip, and he was in no mood to become their latest obsession, at least no more so than he already was. ------ From the dais inside her audience chamber, Tenel Ka looked down at the captain of her guard, Ganin Kutik. Tall and broad shouldered; Kutik was a warrior in every sense of the word. A thick, red beard covered his face, and his pale green eyes spoke of a man who’d seen more than his share of violence and death. “You have news, Captain?” “Disturbing events have unfolded since we last spoke, Majesty,” Kutik said, kneeling on one knee before his queen. “Three of your best placed spies were found dead early this morning. I have been, as yet, unable to determine at who’s hands they met their ends.” “There is more,” Tenel Ka stated, sensing through the Force the truth of her words. “Yes, Majesty. All three spies reported to me prior to their deaths rumors of a new plot to force you from the throne.” Tenel Ka narrowed her gray eyes, her brow knitted in thought. assassination attempts were commonplace on Hapes, so why was the captain so upset now? Already, she had survived several attempts on her life, and she knew more were in the offing. It was the way of things for those who ruled the Hapes Consortium. “There is, I take it, a new wrinkle this time?” Tenel Ka prompted. “If the rumors are to believed, then it is not you your enemies seek to eliminate, Your Majesty,” answered Ganin. Jacen, the Queen Mother surmised silently. “Go on,” she urged. “As I understand it, your enemies have targeted Jedi Anakin Solo, Majesty.” Tenel Ka’s eyebrows lifted in surprise. She had not been expecting that answer from the captain of her guard. Jacen she could understand, but Anakin? Though he was a dear friend, and, perhaps, one day a relation by marriage, he was of little significance otherwise. Certainly an attempt on the younger Solo brother’s life would effect Jacen and herself, but still? “You are certain of what you heard, Ganin Kutik?” “I am, Your Majesty.” ------ Dressed in his formal Jedi robes, Jacen paced back and forth on the mosaic covered floor of Tenel Ka’s bedroom. Night had fallen on Hapes, and Tenel Ka had returned to him with distressing news. His younger brother the target of a Hapan assassination plot? For the life of him, Jacen couldn’t fathom what was behind this news. “You’re certain that Anakin is the target?” “Fact,” Tenel Ka answered firmly. “Ganin brought me the news early this morning, and by this afternoon, he had gathered further proof of his claims. Unfortunately, the loss of three of my best spies has prevented us from learning who, exactly, is behind this plot.” “I just don’t get this,” Jacen admitted, his head shaking. “Striking at our enemies through their families is a common practice here,” Tenel Ka reminded him. “True, but Anakin just seems a odd choice. I’d understand if it was my Mom or Dad, even Uncle Luke.” Again Jacen shook his head. “You really believe this is on-the-level?” “The Force tells me the information is accurate. For whatever reason, Anakin is in danger.” Tenel Ka moved before the glass doors that lead out onto her balcony. “He should be warned,” she said of Anakin. “That won’t be easy, I’m afraid. At least not for a little while yet.” Tenel Ka turned to face Jacen, an eyebrow arched. “Anakin is in the Unknown Regions with Jorallen and Tesar at the moment. They are there to lend assistance to Wyn Fel and her Chiss task force. And they are under strict orders to maintain comm-silence until their mission is completed,” explained Jacen. “I could try and contact Mara on Csilla, but I doubt she would have any better luck getting word to him than we would.” “More problems with the Killiks?” Tenel Ka asked, curious. “I don’t know. Uncle Luke didn’t have time to explain when I talked to him last. All I know is that Mara took Ben with her to Csilla to monitor the mission from CEDF headquarters. Beyond that, I don’t have a clue what they’re up to. And besides, none of that explains why someone here on Hapes would want Anakin dead.” Jacen let out a frustrated sigh. “Fact.” Tenel Ka fell silent for a long few moments, allowing the Force to suggest a course of action before speaking again. “I think it would be advisable to request additional Jedi from Master Skywalker to aid in this investigation.” “You do?” “My resources are diminished by today’s murders, affairs of state leave me little time to investigate personally, and you are too high profile at the moment to be effective,” she reasoned. “I suppose that’s true,” Jacen conceded. “I’ll contact Uncle Luke and the High Council first thing in the morning.” “Good. I...” The Queen Mother trailed off, a warning sensation striking her through the Force. “I feel it too,” Jacen said, unclipping and igniting his emerald-bladed lightsaber. Both Jacen and Tenel Ka fell silent, their energies directed towards locating the source of the disturbance they felt. As quickly as it had arrived, however, it passed. In its wake, both Tenel Ka and Jacen sensed a familiar presence. Unfortunately, the presence lingered only an instant; not long enough for either Jedi to identify it. ------ Standing in the shadows some distance from the Fountain palace, a figured dressed in pure-white robes extinguished a blue lightsaber. At the figure’s feet were the lifeless bodies of two athletic Hapan men. One man had a lightsaber wound through his heart, the other had had his throat slit. Standing near the robed figure, a gray-skinned Noghri slid its bloodstained dagger back into its sheath. “It is done, Lady Vader,” the creature hissed. “Lets be off, Meewalh,” Leia Solo instructed her Noghri guard as she slipped deeper into the shadows. Twenty minutes later, Leia and Meewalh arrived back at the battered light freighter that had brought them to Hapes in the first place. There to greet them were a bearded old man who creaked when he walked and much younger man with dark gray eyes. “I take it things went well, ladies?” The younger of the spacers asked. His arms folded over his chest, he was leaning casually against the side of his ship. “As well as could be expected,” Leia replied ruefully. “No problems here, I take it?” “Nothing old Qorl and I couldn’t handle,” the younger one replied breezily. “Good, and thank you both again for all your help,” the princess told them honestly. “Hey, think nothing of it, Your Highness. I mean, it’s not everyday old Qorl and I get asked to help out royalty, much less a princess and former New Republic Chief of State.” Leia nodded politely. “We should get some rest; we have a busy day ahead of us.” Qorl and Remis nodded in agreement. Not part of your "warped continuity" and yet the name Jorallen seems oddly familiar Why would someone want to assassinate Anakin when he's off in the Unknown Regions, when no one can contact him or has heard from him? No one would even know he was killed. I don't trust Tenel Ka's information So is Leia a little twisted in this fic?
