Instead of Lucas going through these movies and adding new scenes/music/special features do you think he should just leave the OT alone and remake the OT with new actors and better technology...etc.?
I mean all he has to do is find new actors, he already has the story written.

(imagine what the duel in ANH could look like if it was remade.)

But to play 'devil's advocate', I wouldn't say that he 'should' remake the OT, but that he might as well , given the Special Editions.

IF the OT were to be re-made, I think they'd need to mess around with the structure of the films somewhat.

For instance, a New Hope would be the rescue of Princess Leia from a Star Destroyer or something instead of the Death Star (the Death Star would not be seen until ROTJ) and the ending would be similar to the opening of Empire ie. Luke & Co. escape back to Yavin, but instead of battling a Death Star, the Empire follows them and we get a Hoth-esque battle.

Alderaan would not get blown up, and the Emperor, Yoda, and Bail Oragana would all have a role in the film.

Of course, that would leave you with no opening to Empire...

I'm complete;y against it, BTW, but it would make an interesting 'Elseworlds' style comic.

Actually, I kinda liked Internets' general direction. Clearly that's not our SW movies, but if you were actually doing the SW trilogy, knowing the first will definitely not remain the first, choices like that seem relatively sensible. Really, why have two Death Stars? You probably need a better alternative than just a Star Destroyer and the Battle of Hoth, but some restructuring would at least give such a hypothetical remake a slight edge over more direct mirror-movies.

Well, yeah, it's all hypothetical.

As opposed to the two Death Stars issue, I'd also assume that Luke and Leia wouldn't be getting it on in Empire.

Hypothetically (see what you guys have done, you've dragged me into this discussion kicking and screaming! tongue ) if you're going to screw around with plot elements, then obviously the Death Star 2 merits removal from ROTJ, not the original DS from the original film! The DS is iconic and is inextricable from the entire plot of 'ANH' -- the plans the droids are carrying are the maguffun, the crux of the entire storyline! Take that away and congratulations, you've taken your first step toward watering down 'ANH' and making it a milquetoast piece of bourgeois balogna, rife with lame ideas and sorry storytelling! This in a nutshell is why re-makes should not even be considered: They are an inherently bad idea, because the original movies are as near cinematic perfection as is possibly achievable by human means. Any tampering with them will produce horrifically lame notions like this one, which you guys are bafflingly putting forward as viable options for consideration. Good lord, people, wake up and smell the Jawa juice.

As a collector, I'm happy for him to tweak the films as many times as he likes. I'm part of the fanbase that keeps him rich. I'll buy every copy that Lucasfilm releases.

First thing is first: I say NO way to remaking the OT. There just isnt any reason to do it. They still "work" very well and there wouldnt be anything to be gained from it. Its not like there is TONS of extra footage or some huge plot gaps that could be filled-in. And, even then, it just isnt neccessary! Now, onto my take regarding the comment about remakes always being a bad idea... I say that remakes IN SOME SITUATIONS have value!

Here are some special situations where a remake of an older movie might be valid:

- Horrible special effects that detract from the movie. Many older Sci-Fi/Action films fall into this category. Star Wars is NOT one of them though.

- Gaping plot holes or total lapses of credulity that hamper the films enjoyment.
- If the film was made from a novel and really screwed it up or left out too many important parts.

- If the film just plain old sucked. The 2003 version of The Hulk is a good example. Cool idea, poor execution. The 2008 Hulk with Ed Norton was WAY better. It worked in this case.

- Lousy, wooden acting. Unfortunately, there are many so-called classics that do have lame acting in them. It cannot be denied. Remember, it wasnt until Brando/Wells actually started to "act" that movies didnt seem like people reading their lines off of a sheet of paper.

None of the above really apply to the OT at all. The effects hold up. The characters and acting, while not oscar-worthy hold up too. My list more pertains to the belief that NO older film should ever be remade. This just isnt true.
