What i always wonder, when the topic of the WDs comes up, are those things able to transform matter or not?
Like turning silicates into iron and so on?
A TIE-fighter made of sand wouldn´t be very useful, don´t you think.
If they can, that would seriously limit the need for ores, mines and so on.

Well, the molecular furnances on the WD aren't exactly to be found on some twentieth rate orbit asteroid smelter.
I wonder why no one every tried to duplicate the molecular smelters, they would have been very good for gathering resources (to say nothing of rebuilding Coruscant)

RE: New Republic capital ships [Black Fleet to NJO] - sorting out the mess...
I just read a copy of SotG at my local Chapters and I noticed something curious. Apparently the ISDII costs only ~144,000,000 credits, while the DSD costs ~168,000,000 credits. So apparently the New Republic's new SD was more expensive, despite being less crew intensive. The book also said that the DSD was the "ultimate" Star Destroyer, capable of single-handedly taking on any class of large ship (MC series, ISDs, VSDs), 2 medium-sized ships (Majestic-class, Dreadnought, Vindicator) and a whole fleet of small ships (Carracks, Nebs, Gunships, etc...). The key to its success was that it had manoeuvring thrusters along its flanks, making it more nimble than the ISD. The reason why there aren't so many of them is because they're pretty expensive for their size, and I would venture to guess that it's also because the NR military was not exatly making a large expansion after the surrender of the IR.
Oh and for other costs:
MC90: ~138,000,000 credits
VSDI: 55,000,000 credits
VSDII: 50,000,000 credits
Interdictor: 48,000,000 credits
BAC: 57,000,000 credits
SSD: ~1,200,000,000 credits
Dreadnought: ~30,000,000 credits
BTW, I re-read the EC, and I have found no trace of this quote where it is stated that the New-class vessel production was halted.

Do you think the
Dauntless
is a Republic-class Cruiser, or an older model?

President_Sharky:
Well, you are correct. I just re read it myself, and I found no paragraph that says the New Class was discontinued.
But, the New Class most likely was confined to the Fifth Fleet. Heres my hypothesis why:
Firstly, because we literally have not seen any New Class vessels since the BFC. Now, that can be atributed to the EU authors simply not using them, but I tend to be of the opinion that they were replaced by even better vessels.
Now, we know for sure that the
Defender
class SD was a very limited production vessel. Cracken's Threat Dossier says that only 10 were in commission during the BFC, with one more a year until the program finished. When shipyards like Mon Calamari and Kuat and popping out other ships by the hundreds, it is hard for the
Defender
class to keep up.
Also, after the Peace Treaty with the Empire, the NR began to decommission some of its warships while at the same time it commissioned new ships, like the Bothan Assault Cruiser,
Ranger
gunship, and the Mon Calamari
Mediator
class battlecruiser.
Anyway, until we are told otherwise, the New Class could technically by under construction.
Of course, even if they are, the ships would be drawfed in numbers by the more common capital ships produced and used by the NR/GA fleet. In the NJO, we see that Mon Calamari cruisers (of various classes), Bothan Assault cruisers, and Star Destroyers (various classes) are the most common warships in the Fleet.
So, anyway, I guess the most simple answer is that we don't know for sure. We all just assumed they were because of their lack of use.
Hope that ramble helps.
Kansas_Navy:
Are you refering to the
Dauntless
that was in SbS and TUF? If so, we still don't know for sure what it is. It is obviously not a Star Destroyer or Mon Cal cruiser, since if it was it would of been described as one. My guess would be that it is some sort of cruiser. Perhaps a
Majestic
class heavy cruiser, or another type of warship?
In fact, one of us Fleet Junkies biggest gripes is that the authors named many ships in the NJO, but neglected to describe the class. Another great example of this is the heavy cruiser
Yald
.
Awhile back we all complied a list of all the named warships in the NJO, including New Republic/Galactic Alliance, Imperial Remnant, Hapan, and Yuuzhan Vong. I forget what page it was on, but if you guys want it I will try to dig it up.

RE: New Republic capital ships [Black Fleet to NJO] - sorting out the mess...
hello all,
I am kind of new around here, but I have a rather important question about hyperdrive jumps. I had no idea and TonG said to ask here. I want to know what would happen if, say a shuttle, were to jump directly into a capital ship, say a vic star. TonG told me that when going into hyper space a ship accelerates to just over light speed and then enters hyperspace, if this is true then the result of a shuttle hitting a capitalship would be, to say the least, devastating.
Please remeber that the ship is not actually in hyperspace, just going very very fast in real space.

Ton_G:
We need a new NJO sourcebook like a fish needs water.
Unfortunately we will probably never see one.
Commissar_Cromwell:
Welcome to the JC Lit Boards!!
Any friend of
Ton's
is a friend of ours.
As to your question, I am not sure. I imagine that if the VSD had its shields up that it could withstand the hit. Now, if the VSD was caught with its shields down, and the shuttle hit the main reactor blub, then perhaps it couls cause some severe damage.

assuming its shields about 80-90 percent and the shuttle was aiming for the shield generators....
This all comes from a role playing game. My ISD has shields 60, primary hanger is gone and my under side weapons are offline. (Please do not make me get into how this happened, all I have to say is YES SENSORS READ THROUGH SHIELDS of a shuttle full of explosives!). any way.....I have been shooting at a vic star for about 40 mins game time, I am losing and needed something to even the tablesm hence the shuttle trick. All I was hoping for was to at least bring his shields down lower.
Second question, what would happen if an ISD hyperjumped into an unshielded planet. I know the ship would not actually make it into hyperspace, but it would get very close to the speed of light..... ideas?

I would go and post this question to the RPG boys of the JC boards. They would probably know for sure.

Well, the RPG boys are used to cooking up thoughts on how to destroy ships.
My point is, something that may not work in the actual EU books may be allowed in a RPG game.
Now, if you managed to pack that Lambada with explosives and soem anti-matter......

It wouldn't work at sublight speeds because the gravitational shadow of the planet would yank your Star Destroyer out of hyperspace.
I wonder if the Remnant has anything similar to the DSD (the weapons load doesn't seem that much different. I thought SSDs would cost considerably more)
