It's a way of protecting yourself from the Punjab lasso, which is the Phantom's choice method of killing. The Punjab lasso is thrown about the neck to strangle the victim (although in the play it is magical and can stand in the air on its own). It's the noose thing that is used to hang the stage hand, and almost strangles Raoul at the end of the film. If you keep your hand at the level of your eye, the lasso won't be able to go around your neck but will catch on your arm instead, and so you won't be strangled.

It's about avoiding the Phantom's lasso from getting around your neck and thus avoiding getting strangled.

Butler was on Leno last night. DUDE, he's hot IRL. grin grin

I thought the film was brilliant. However, I have never seen it on the stage, so I cannot make a true comparisson.

I thought the Phantom was good, Carlotta was AWESOME. As for Christine, good voice, but she needs to learn how to make a new facial expression.

Yes, and deservingly so. I hated it. There is so much productionly wrong with this movie. The lipsyncing was never on, the voice for Phantom was horrible, the actor needed to be older, and Christine never had stage makeup on. I know it's a movie, but to be accurate as to the fact that she's supposed to be on an opera stage, she needs stage makeup - everyone else on stage had some. The fight scene in the oversized graveyard was choreographed horribly. The things they added were completely unneeded - flashbacks, fastforwards? Why?! I knew from the instant the first scene ended that the movie was going to be completely cheesy and a waste of money and time, and if it wasn't for the fact that I went with friends, and we spent the entire movie making snide comments about it to each other, I probably would've walked out.

Sorry you thought it was a waste. I thought it was an awesome film, but even if I had disliked it, I wouldn't think I wasted my money. The lovely music itself was well-worth the admission price.

All I can say is, it's not your typical movie, and with good reason. I think with this film, they tried to make it an opera first and foremost, and probably threw the framing story in as an afterthought to lend a more cinematic structure. The vision was realized so beautifully that I can't complain. The sets and costumes still have me in awe. I wish they'd make more films like this one.

"Isn't that movie suckin wind in the box office?"

It hasn't been released widely yet. Thus far, it has only been shown in select cities and large Cineplex's.

I am sure that it will start to make a LOT more money once it is released widely.

Personally, I loved it! grin

I didn't dislike the music, I myself am a theatre major, and have been so in high school and college for the past 5 years. I loved the play, because it's a spectical that has that live effect. It just didn't work on film. Sadly however, there is also the fact that Andrew Loyd Webber only really uses two melodies in all of his works. So through out the entirety of the performance, you hear the same thing over and over again, just with different lyrics. And it gets mildly to very annoying.

Well, Otto, the movie is the final evolution of the stage show. Webber decided that he wanted to change things up, and it was all done at his direction...

And yeah, as Windy said, the movie hasn't gotten to general distribution yet. I'll release on Jan. 22nd.
