A short post is by far better than no post at all.

She had a unique ability to make him feel as though someone had grabbed him and shaken him until his teeth rattled, and then set him down again delicately and walked away.

I think that's a pretty accurate summation of the entire scene. Obviously, Leia cares a lot for Luke, but isn't quite ready to give out the true nature of their relationship. Keep up the good work.

I never complain about regular posts.

Leia has explained a little bit to Han but not everything. I can see why she wouldn't. It's a lot to digest. Her explanation of what Luke has to do to maintain is cover was so true. If he had changed, he would have been caught right away.

I can't wait to see the LUke post. happy

First off, do you think you could PM me when you update, because I don't spend much time in Saga?

“No,” Han said. “But I can tell you what it isn’t – an asteroid, a tree, an explanation for why the hell you’re so chummy with an Imperial like Skywalker.”

That's very...Han. happy

Leia’s eyes darkened, and she looked away. “You heard him,” she said softly. “He does what he must to maintain his cover. This is a war, Han. The lives lost maintaining his position in the Empire mean many more saved elsewhere.”

Cold way of looking at it, but necessary, I suppose.

Han stared at the tabletop morosely. How could she care for someone like that? She was a thousand good things, and Skywalker was… Skywalker. Han found it difficult to believe that the man had any kind of genuine commitment to the Rebel cause. He was probably using Leia, using them all for his own benefit.

You aren't going to lose her to Luke, Han.

“Don’t let it go to your head.”

Nice little interjection of humor.

Han turned his head and watched as she walked down the corridor, then dropped his head into his hands. She had a unique ability to make him feel as though someone had grabbed him and shaken him until his teeth rattled, and then set him down again delicately and walked away. What was it with her?

That's called love, I think.

Poor Han! sad - He loves Leia, and can't admit it, and Leia can't see it, and he thinks she loves Luke. Only Luke is the one that sees very clearly how Han and Leia actually feel toward each other, and he's in no position to do anything about it! *sighs*

Aack! I missed two posts! I am holding my place at the 50th post and will be back later to comment. I still have to find a few moments to sit down and read. But I know they'll be excellent, they always are! grin

Loved Leia's explanation about Luke trying to maintain his cover. It makes sense, but I wonder if she would be as understanding if it was someone else????

Ok, I am completely absorbed in this fic! LOL. it's great, and now I really, really want to be able to read the rest of it!

I think the relationship between Luke and Leia in this new, changed world is fascinating. Does Luke know Leia is his sister? You may have mentioned it, I can't remember.

I hope you'll be able to post more soon! happy

Jedi_BMK: A short post is by far better than no post at all.

Good point... grin And yes, Leia's reluctant to give too much away. She does have reasons for that...

RebelMom: Her explanation of what Luke has to do to maintain is cover was so true.

He does have to play his role well, which means doing certain things he would rather not do. And he does struggle with that at times... As you'll see very soon.

Jesina: First off, do you think you could PM me when you update

I can do that... Anyone else want PMs? Just ask... tongue

That's called love, I think.

laugh Yes indeed. But does Han realise this...?

GreatOne: tongue Nice summation. It is pretty convoluted when you put it that way... wink

VaderLVR64: I'm updating pretty regularly so I can understand why you'd miss posts... If you want to be PM'd, just let me know.

Kazzy: tongue Well, there's another post coming very soon. I don't know about all of it though... wink And yes, Luke knows that Leia is his sister. That was covered a while ago, way back in the first post. So I can understand why you might have forgotten.

Ana_Labris: Great to see you here! And more is on its way. happy

Sithspawn: Good, because Luke's up next. tongue

I was going to leave this until tomorrow, but there seems to be enough demand to warrant posting a day early. So...

Luke Skywalker touched his ship down in the private docking area he’d been granted in the higher levels of Imperial Palace. He ran through the power-down process by rote and was soon descended the ramp of the ship. Luke crossed to stand before the force-shielded opening. Imperial Palace towered above all the other buildings, at a dizzying height; Luke was not troubled as he stared downwards, having spent a lonely childhood exploring rock chimneys in vast desert canyons.

The orange sun was setting over the city. Off on the other side of the building, he knew, the shadow cast by the Palace would be stretching over half of the central district, bringing early night. This high up, all the buildings below seemed small and grey, and the beings inside little more than specks on the vast city panorama. Faceless specks, nameless, insignificant…

It was a skilful illusion, and one that was shrewdly calculated.

Luke lifted a gloved hand and pressed at the apparently empty space before him, feeling the tingling resistance of the force-shield against his fingers. He spread his hand flat, then sighed and turned away.

He made his way through high-ceilinged, echoing corridors and vast grand chambers, all designed to maximise a sense of insignificance in whoever chanced to pass through them. He rode the turbolift to the highest floor of the Palace, passing helmeted guards wearing cloaks the colour of human blood.

At the end of the long passage was a tall door decorated in strange swirling shapes that seemed to defy the eye. Luke stopped before it and the door silently opened. He stepped inside.

The chamber was dark, the throne at the top of the stairs empty. Luke’s footsteps were silent as he walked forward. A slender figure stood in semi-darkness at the top of the stairs, clad in a tight dark jumpsuit, arms crossed, red-gold hair tumbling down over her shoulders.

Mara Jade, Emperor’s Hand.

She turned slowly, looking down at him with cold green eyes. He said nothing, and she began to walk down the stairs, each step compact and graceful.

“Yes?” she said, her voice as chill as her gaze.

It hadn’t been, once. Once those eyes had been warm for him. It seemed like a long time ago, now. Aeons ago. Another lifetime.

“Please inform the Emperor that I have returned,” Luke said, matching her coldness with careful blandness of his own. “My investigation into Governor Kolar’s… activities… is complete.”

“So I heard,” she said. She took another step, then stopped and regarded him. Her face was pale in the shadow, the tilt of her head arrogant.

“I am available at His Majesty’s convenience,” Luke said. “His humble servant, as ever.”

“As ever,” she echoed, with only the barest twist to her lips. Luke dipped his head, and she said, “The Emperor will be informed.”

“Thank you,” Luke said. She inclined her head very slightly in return. He turned and strode from the chamber, feeling her sardonic gaze on his back every step of the way.

He paid little attention to his surroundings as he made his way to his apartment, and less attention when he arrived there. His rooms were opulent, but sterile. He’d never felt comfortable in them.

He crossed to the wide window in the seating area, clearing the opaque transparisteel to stare out over the darkening city. After a while, he drew a breath and leaned his forehead against the cool transparisteel. He closed his eyes.

Mara had the power to shake his composure like no one else. Every time. It was impossible to see her and not feel that ache, deep inside.

There had been a time, once, when it hadn’t been this way. They’d hated each other at first, been bitter rivals. But gradually they came to see one another not as enemies but as allies, and then as friends. Good friends. And then they had touched on something more; had hovered on the very brink of it. In her eyes and in her laugh, Luke found a safe place he’d never known existed.

He’d fought so hard to protect it, been so careful. But Mara saw things that others did not. What he hid so well from those he feared, he could not conceal from her. Somehow, she’d begun to suspect his treason.

And one evening she confronted him with a datapad, and information he thought he’d destroyed utterly. He’d been so careful, so very careful.

Not careful enough.

“How did you get this?” he’d asked dully, after a long silence.

She had stared at him with those sharp green eyes, and said, “It’s my job to retrieve the information people seek to hide.” A pause. “I do my job well.”

“I see,” he’d said quietly.

“Who for?” she demanded. “And for what? Money, Luke? Or is it a cause?”

“The Rebel Alliance,” he’d said. She’d pulled away, then. He had been unable to tell whether her expression was angry or surprised, or both. “It was that or be destroyed, Mara. I couldn’t live the way I was. I couldn’t deny what I was meant to be any longer.”

“Meant to be?” Her voice was strange, with an edge he’d never heard before. “And what is that – Obi-Wan Kenobi’s puppet?”

He’d smiled bitterly. “Yes,” he said. “Exactly. Kenobi’s puppet.”

She’d drawn a breath and turned away. A long, long silence had followed.

“Mara—” he’d said at last, hesitantly. But she’d swung away from his words and strode out his door for good, her steps rushed and uneven.

He’d waited that night for the Imperial guardsman to come to his door, or for his father, perhaps; waited for his death. But they hadn’t come – not that night, nor the next. He still waited, and couldn’t understand why. The contempt in her eyes when she looked at him now told him that whatever might have been never would, and still she kept his secret.

He lifted his head. The city was dark now, under a sky that was empty of stars. He’d given up trying to purge her from his thoughts, but knew he could never have her. A weapon he was, and a weapon could not love.

He’d known he would have to make sacrifices for the Rebellion, but somehow he’d never expected it to be this hard.

He made his report to Palpatine the next day, down on one knee before the hooded figure. The Emperor listened without speaking. Luke finished and Palpatine murmured, “Yes, yes. Well done.” He’d known it all already, of course. His spies were everywhere.

Palpatine stroked his wrinkled chin and said, “Your progress has been excellent, young Skywalker. You have a composure… that your father lacks. Most intriguing.” Palpatine oozed the word, causing Luke to wince inside. Palpatine’s overtures, while infinitely more subtle than Vader’s, were slowly becoming more overt.

They both sought him, sought to wring him for power like a water-filled sponge. For now he was safe from the power politics, but it couldn’t last forever. They would tire of his prevarications eventually and he would be forced to choose or die. To take Vader’s place at Palpatine’s side, or to become Vader to his father’s Palpatine? Either way, the galaxy and Luke Skywalker lost out.

“Thank you, my Emperor,” Luke murmured.

“You will not be aware,” Palpatine added, as though as an afterthought. “Your father is currently away – assisting Governor Tarkin with his project. You will be required to fulfil some of the Lord Vader’s duties during his absence. You have done this before, yes?”

Luke maintained his stillness, outwardly and inwardly. A survival skill, in Palpatine’s presence. But somewhere deep inside of him, panic extended its icy tendrils. His father was on the Death Star? Luke had no idea when the Rebels intended to use the plans he had provided, but Leia had been confident it would be very, very soon.

What if his father was on the station when they attacked? What if he was killed?

“Yes, my master,” Luke murmured, keeping his voice flat. “I am yours to command.”

“Yes,” Palpatine agreed slowly. “Yes, you are.”

He dismissed Luke soon after. Luke bowed to his Emperor’s back, and left.

There was little he could do about Vader. He would have to trust that the Sith Lord’s Force connection would warn him before it was too late. But then what would that mean for the Rebel attack? Would it be doomed?

Luke’s portion of Vader’s duties while the man was away consisted mainly of administrative tasks for the Sith Lord’s three governorships, with some Fleet liaison work thrown in. Many of the officers had been initially dubious of Luke – and who could blame them? An untested youth from a backwater planet, given post over them by means of nepotism. But he’d come to earn their respect, over the years.

In what little spare time he had, Luke walked the lavish indoor gardens of the Palace, or watched the city through his wide window. He was watching the last light fade over the city one evening in the weeks after his return when he felt a calamity through the Force. One instant, the Force had been tranquil, and the next, a roiling mass of emotion.

Luke fell to his knees under the onslaught, clutching his head. Never in his life had he sensed anything of this magnitude. Spectres rose and fell before his eyes, flickering and overlapping: a mother clinging a wailing child to her desperately as the ground rent itself below her feet; an old, old man clutching at his chest in fright; a man with dark hair sitting in stunned horror as the building shuddered around him; a thousand faces, a thousand minds clamouring in terror and agony.

Then they were gone: flashed to nothing. And that silence was more horrifying than the agonised outcry had been.

They were dead. All of them, dead.

In one cold, impersonal instant, a multitude of people and lives and joys and hopes had been obliterated.

Luke swallowed hot bile, closing his eyes.

Tarkin’s project had been successful. The Death Star had made its first kill, and millions had been destroyed by Palpatine’s megalomania.

Leia’s Rebellion would be too late. They could destroy the superweapon, but nothing could bring back those already murdered by means of it.

Luke pictured the mother and child in his mind again. Silently, he told them, I won’t fail again. I promise. I will remember you and your young one, fair lady. Your deaths will not go unavenged.

I swear it.

Great post.

Interesting dynamic you have going between Luke and Mara. She's angry at his treason, but still cares for him enough to not turn him in. I'm curious as to who she will be loyal to when push comes to shove (and I have little doubt that it will).

I feel sorry for Luke with all the manipulations he has to put up with. Everyone wants something from him and it doesn't sound like he is able to worry about himself. Very much like the Luke we all know. More concerned about not failing others than he is about himself.

I thought you did a great job capturing Luke's reaction to the Death Star's test. And if the planet I'm thinking of was the victim, he's liable to be even more pissed than he already is.

Luke pictured the mother and child in his mind again. Silently, he told them, I won’t fail again. I promise. I will remember you and your young one, fair lady. Your deaths will not go unavenged.

I swear it.

I don't doubt that at all and I can't wait to see just how that vengeance comes about.

Looking forward to more.

I agree the tension between Luke and Mara will be an interesting thing to follow. I wonder that when it is found out that the Rebels have the plans if Mara will say anything to Palp. . . and who says that Palp doesn't know and WANTS the rebels to know about it. There shouldn't be any flaws anyway. .. exhaust ports are insignificant and noone would ever imagine bringing fighters against the DEATH STAR. . . especially not down a LONG well gaurded trench with a sharp up take at the end. .. no only people used to flying in canyons would do it and he's got Luke after all. . . who else other than kids from tatooine would be able to fly it? and Palp controls Tatooine two best pilots wink

Poor Poor traped luke happy [hugs]

Have I told you that you have an amazing ability with description? Few amateur writers I know of have such a knack for truly painting a picture in the reader's mind as you do.

I detect stirrings of the L/M you allude to in the subject line...that she's protecting him intrigues me.

I'm glad that you put Alderaan's destruction into this...it intertwines it well with the movies' storyline.

Wonderful job, K_A!

Luke is so lonely. He's used by everybody. It's sad how his connection with Mara caused a rift in their relationship. It is telling that she didn't inform on him. There is hope. Your descriptions of the palace made it seem so sterile and lifeless - just like the Empire. I can understand why Luke would not be comfortable there.
