Title: A Prison without Walls
Author: VaderLVR64
Characters: Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Anakin, Yoda, Mace Windu… Do those names ring a bell? tongue
Summary: Something different happens at the end of TPM. How does that change the chain of events leading up to ROTS? Does it?
Notes: Adopted from the devious and diabolically clever Juliet316. devil Just so you know where to put the blame! Here was the bunny - What if a powerful Jedi like Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Anakin, Luke or even Jacen suffered a stroke or similar aliment and was literally trapped inside their own body with little access to the Force beyond basic awareness of what was going on around them? How would they deal with that? Would they go insane? Would they try to heal themselves? Would they ever recover?

And a big hugs to Gina for yet another LOVELY cover!

A Prison without Walls

“Wherever any one is against his will, that is to him a prison.” - Epictetus

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When he saw the healer finally emerge from the surgical suite, Obi-Wan shot to his feet. “Is there any news?” he asked anxiously.
The solemn look on the healer’s face was enough to start his heart beating fast. But he would have sensed his Master passing into the Force. Wouldn’t he? Her next words allowed him to start breathing again. “He’s stabilized for now,” she said, but she did not sound as relieved as Obi-Wan felt.
“But?” He asked, sensing the unspoken word, his voice no more than a croak pushed through a constricting throat.
She motioned toward some chairs and urged him to sit. He had kept his vigil by himself, granted permission by Master Yoda. The ancient little Jedi had known how much he needed to be alone while he waited to find out if his Master would live or die. Obi-Wan sank into a chair and clasped his hands in his lap. He was dismayed to discover that they were shaking. Where was his customary composure?
“Knight Kenobi,” she began gently and he flinched from the title. Of course, he had only been a knight for a few hours, but it seemed rather disrespectful to address him by the honorific now, while he waited to hear news of Qui-Gon. Everyone knew he had only been knighted because no one had expected his Master to live. Obi-Wan hoped fervently that his Master, as he had done so many times in the past, would prove them all wrong once again. “Your Master’s condition is fragile at best,” she murmured.
“What do you mean?” Obi-Wan asked in a dull voice.
The healer sighed and seemed to search for the right words. “I cannot predict how well or how quickly he will recover.”
“But he will recover, right?” the young man asked.
Her eyes met his and he shrank from the sorrow in her kind eyes. “I do not know,” she answered honestly.
For a moment, Obi-Wan wanted to ask her to lie to him, to assure him that Qui-Gon would make a full recovery. There would be comfort in the lie and for just a little while he would allow himself to believe. But a Jedi did not place his faith in lies or false comfort. He must face the possible loss of his Master as courageously as Qui-Gon was facing death. Obi-Wan had responsibilities now, not only to himself and his Master, but to the little boy who waited so anxiously with the Queen’s handmaidens.
“I understand,” Obi-Wan murmured. He nodded to show he had heard her words. “Thank you for your help, Healer Byn.” She stood and crossed the small room toward the door.
“I’ll inform the Council of his condition,” she said quietly. “You may wait here if you’d like.”
“Thank you,” Obi-Wan said absently. She turned and left and he was alone once more. The Council had brought a Jedi Healer with them in order to treat the grievously wounded Master and now those Jedi who had gathered on Naboo could do nothing more than wait for the will of the Force to be revealed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Obi-Wan was at Qui-Gon’s bedside, shocked by how pale his Master looked. His lips were a colorless slash on his face and his complexion was grey. The only bit of color was the beard, which made his flesh appear even more lifeless. Qui-Gon looked as if he was already dead, but the machines at his side said otherwise. He tried hard to take comfort in the facts they presented.

Reaching out through the Force, Obi-Wan tried to find Qui-Gon in those warm currents, but search as he might; Qui-Gon was simply somewhere else. A coma, the healer had explained, a healing coma to give his body a chance to recover while the mind rested. That must be it, Obi-Wan reassured himself.

He heard the door open, but did not turn. All of his attention was focused on the man in the bed. A firm hand on his shoulder made him glance up to see Mace Windu’s face. “Master Windu,” he said politely and then turned back toward his Master.

“Obi-Wan,” Mace said in an uncharacteristically gentle voice. “You should get some rest.”

“I’ll rest later,” Obi-Wan replied tersely.

Master Windu gave an exasperated sigh. “That wasn’t a suggestion,” he said firmly. “Go…get some sleep.”

Obi-Wan’s gaze swung back toward the Koran Master. “I’m fine,” he muttered, though his eyes felt gritty with fatigue and he knew that even the Force could not keep his exhaustion at bay for too much longer.

“There’s nothing you can do for him right now, Obi-Wan,” Mace said softly. “If you’ll go get a few hours’ sleep, I promise I’ll stay with him until you get back.”

The young man was torn, but in the end, one more look at Mace Windu’s expression was enough to convince him that there would be no arguing his way out of going to his quarters. He nodded. “Yes, sir.” But he was reluctant to leave the room, his eyes straying once more to the big, silent figure lying in the bed.

“Go,” Master Windu said and gave him a not-so-gentle push toward the door.

Obi-Wan reached the door and turned around, suddenly realizing that he had not even thought about young Anakin in hours. “Where is the boy?” he asked automatically. It was too difficult to care about him right now, when Qui-Gon’s life was hanging in the balance. But his Master had given the boy into his care and he would fulfill his responsibilities.

“The Queen’s handmaidens have been watching over him,” Windu replied. “I think he’s sleeping.” He considered the young man. “The Council is still discussing his fate.”

“I understand,” Obi-Wan said, his own ambivalence evident. On one hand, Qui-Gon believed that the boy was the Chosen One and desired him to be trained as a Jedi, but on the other, Obi-Wan felt something dark and dangerous in the child. He would fight to train the boy, but only because his Master wanted it.

Stop thinking that way, he scolded himself. Qui-Gon will recover and he can train the boy.

But wouldn’t that be just as bad in a different way? Either way, Obi-Wan was going to lose his Master.

~~~~~~~~~~
Obi-Wan fell into the bed and had barely kicked off his boots before his exhaustion claimed him. It was a restless sleep, allowing his body little recovery, for his mind insisted on examining those final moments of the duel over and over again. He saw Qui-Gon fall countless times, heard his own desperate cry.
“No!”
And then he would awaken, only to fall back into an uneasy sleep and start the process over again. Then a different sound intruded upon the nightmare and he struggled to free himself from its grip and rouse himself to wakefulness. It was a hand on his shoulder, shaking him awake.
“Obi-Wan,” the voice hissed urgently.
He blinked and stared up into the darkness. It was Master Yoda’s voice. “Quickly you must come, young one,” the Master said.
The young man sat up, his throat feeling blocked and his heart hammering wildly in his chest. “Is he dead?” he asked in a breathless voice.
Yoda shook his head and then replied in a mournful voice, “Not good is it, quickly, you must come…”
What a fantastic plot bunny! The title to this fic suits it perfectly as well.
Obi-Wan's anguish and raw emotions he's trying to contain with Jedi stoicism are still so readily apparent. My heart aches for him.
I can't wait to see how you develop this idea! Please add me to the PM list, if there is one!
