good_luck MARCH CHALLENGE good_luck

Back to our roots...

I thought in light of the impending LotF series and the pain felt by many J/Jers during the DNT that we'd have a challenge that reminds us why we fell in love with Jaina and Jag in the first place.

Entry parameters

So here's what we're going to do. Jag just laid his first kiss on Jaina in Rebel Dream - you do remember the bliss right? - and now they are face to face for the first time since he left her in order to talk to Uncle Wedge. What happened? What did they say? Did they say anything at all?

  1. Entries must be posted in this thread.

  2. Entries can be no longer than 2500 words.

  3. Entries must have the index required block of information (Title, Author, Genre, etc.) at the top.

  4. Entries will be judged on originality, adherence to canon, spelling/grammar/adherence to the challenge rules, mush factor (the ability to turn up the heat) and overall impression.

There are no other restrictions. The challenge closes on April 2nd at 11:59PM board time.

Can you feel the love batting

Questions can be PMed to T'Keira or posted in the challenge thread. As always I am looking for a few brave folks to judge.

~T'Keira

Healing at Borleias

Jaina Solo had never paused in going to her rooms; she was afraid someone would stop and ask why she wasn’t reporting to her commander. Of course they wouldn’t, she was the “Goddess” after all. But that was her excuse for going so quickly to her rooms. Deep down though, she knew it was because her heart was pounding faster than a gundark on crack with a hammer. Jag had kissed her…
And was it so surprising? After all, he HAD joined her squadron when he was clearly cut out to be commanding not following. And he had reached out to her at Hapes. No, if she had been thinking clearly, she would definitely have suspected he felt something for her. But only just now did she realize that she felt something back.
She sighed, typing in the code to her door and rushing into her room. Did she have any time to be in love? Jaina almost laughed out loud. Love, who was she kidding? This wasn’t love, this was just attraction. Right now…said a small part of her. “Oh shut up,” she muttered to herself. “I truly am crazy; I’m even talking to myself now.”
She threw herself onto her bed. She held her pillow, thinking about her brothers. One dead…one probably dead…who was she to be happy? Could her brothers ever forgive her for possibly trying to find love when they were dead? She should be miserable; after all, it was her duty to take care of them. She was the eldest, born a few seconds before Jacen. And yet, she had still allowed her brothers to die…
And now she desired romance! Trying not to cry at how horrible she was, she shed her dirty jumpsuit and changed into a clean one. She could feel the tears welling up in her eyes. “This is silly, goddess’ don’t cry…” She shook her head and laid on her bed, hoping she might cry so hard she’d go to sleep.

………………………………………………………………………………………

Jagged Fel paused outside Jaina’s door, not quite sure what he was planning on doing. He knew he wanted to talk to Jaina, rationally and not while she was in hysterics. But what if she was sleeping? He wanted to ask her so many things. How did she feel about him? How could he make her happy? Resolved, he knocked on her door, but not before he had glanced around to make sure no one was watching. He didn’t even want to think about the rumors that would fly if someone saw him going into Jaina’s room…
The door opened a crack. He tried to look in, but the room was dark. “Yes?” came her voice, oddly quiet. She had been crying. He inwardly sighed.
“Jaina…can I come in? I’d like to talk.” He let his mask fade away, being replaced by a caring face that truly reflected his thoughts. “Please? I only want to talk.”
“Um…” her voice was hoarse. He hoped fervently that he wasn’t the reason she was crying. “Yea, hold on.” She coughed, and he heard her run in and splash water on her face. A few seconds later, she opened her door. “Um, come in. Make yourself comfortable.”
He walked into her room. Analyzing every part of it, he saw that while she wasn’t horribly messy, she was definitely not as clean and tidy as he was. He looked around for a place to sit, and to his discomfort, found her bed to be the only seat available. He sighed, hoping she wouldn’t think he was being forward, and sat on her bed.
Jaina cautiously went over to her bed and sat down, her cheeks turning red. “What…what is it you want to talk about?”
Jag looked down but then immediately corrected himself and looked into her eyes. “I…I want to know…how you feel…about me.” He didn’t look away, although a small blush crept onto his face. “I mean, I guess you could already figure out how I feel…” She cocked her head, and he cursed himself. Now she was playing innocent to make him say it. “That I’m attracted to you and care deeply for you. I guess I thought that the kiss kind of explained that…”
Jaina giggled a bit, although her voice was still raspy. “I must admit, I was a little preoccupied at the time to think about underlying meanings.”
Jag smiled. “I admit I was a tad occupied myself.” He brushed a lock of her hair out of her face. “But you still aren’t answering my question…”
Jaina looked away. “It’s not that I don’t have feelings for you, it’s just…I have no right to be happy right now.” She looked sad.
“What is that supposed to mean?” Jag calculated the look in her eyes. “This has something to do with your brothers, doesn’t it?”
The young pilot looked up at him, surprised. “Well, it’s just…I have no right to be happy right now, not with what’s happened. I was supposed to look over them, you know…? They were my responsibility.”
“It wasn’t your fault Jaina. And you do deserve to be happy, you know why?” She shook her head, curious. “Because you are the most fascinating woman I have ever met. I have never been so attracted towards anyone as I am to you.” She batted her eyes, feigning innocence. But quickly, a small frown replaced her playful look.
“Please Jag, I don’t think I deserve anyth-” He interrupted her with a kiss. He just couldn’t hold himself back.
“No, you’re wrong. It’s I who don’t deserve any chance with you whatsoever. But here I am asking for it nonetheless. Will you give an undeserving man his biggest wish?”
Jaina looked back at him, her eyes pleading, possibly with herself. She wanted to say yes so much…maybe she did deserve someone to care for her right now. After all, isn’t that what her Dad did for her Mom? Not knowing what to say, Jaina said the first thing that came to her mind. “Hold me.”

………………………………………………………………………………………………
An hour later, Jag still held Jaina, talking. He had comforted her, listened to her and told her stories about his childhood. He had stroked her hair, wiped away the tears when she cried, and held her when they had nothing more to talk of.
For several hours this continued on, until during one of the moments when Jag was holding her she fell asleep in his arms. Her eyes were still wet, and he brushed them with his thumb. “Poor thing,” he thought. “She’s being going and going with all this inside of her, all this hate and fear and regret. And anger, mostly anger.” As he laid her down on her small cot, he kissed her forehead. She whined a little in her sleep and tried to draw closer to his comforting warmth. Wishing he could stay with her, he pulled a blanket over her and brushed her cheek with his hand.
“Goodnight goddess.” With a sigh, he got up and left her quarters, wishing more than anything he could stay with her until the morning.

Very good MadameSolo.

Thanks for bringing some happy mushy J/J. It is needed around here these days.

“Oh shut up,” she muttered to herself. “I truly am crazy; I’m even talking to myself now.”

She's been a little crazy for some time. It was good to see she finally noticed. laugh

Jaina giggled a bit, although her voice was still raspy. “I must admit, I was a little preoccupied at the time to think about underlying meanings.”
Jag smiled. “I admit I was a tad occupied myself.”

I love J/J mush. It was very nice.

Now you're going to have to finish that fic you know. I'm just saying. grin

Thank you J/J index for this challenge. As I told oldj the angsty J/J around here is becoming quite depressing. I'm all for bringing back the J/J mush.

Title: Going Forward
Author: Lola64
Characters: Jaina / Jag
Timeframe: Rebel Dream
Summary: After that blissful kiss, Jaina and Jag run into each other, where they continue that meeting.
Notes: This is for oldj who when I vented that I wasn't too keen on an entry that I worked up told me to 'post the darn thing'.

“That was odd.” Jag thought as the door swished closed, leaving him outside his uncle’s office.

He had taken her place before them and as predicted they agreed with his assessment of Jaina Solo’s actions and the results should they reprimand her. But just as he was leaving he couldn’t help but notice something else, some unspoken signal between the two veterans.

Could they have known?

Quickly checking over his appearance again Jag confirmed what his initial search found, after sending Jaina to get some needed rest, no physical indication that he had just been in a lip lock with her.

His lips that before were slightly enflamed had returned to their natural state. And because Jaina was not one to adorn lip rouge, there were no marks needing to be erased.

Perhaps her scent remained behind, after being held in his embrace.

Jag’s nostrils were filled with her shampoo earlier, so he hadn’t investigated. Taking a moment now he smoothed over his flightsuit. His hands returned to his face and confirmed that the aroma that was Jaina had stayed with him, but too feint to be noticed by the two men sitting across from him.

That meant if they knew he gave himself away.

When he was just a boy, his brother Davin dared him to sneak into his father’s office, where somehow, a rare and priceless Corellian artifact met its demise. The eldest three children were brought before him and Soontir Fel, the most feared Imperial Squadron Commander, with only one good eye, stared down his children until one broke.

After Davin and Cherith were dismissed Jag discovered that his father had known all along who broke the heirloom. It was then that he learned, from the master, how to never allow your mistakes or your secrets show through facial expression.

Jag took his father’s words to heart, which helped him not only survive the impersonal Chiss world but become the best commander the Chiss Academy has produced.

That being so how then did these men figure out what he’d done? Or did they?

The more he thought about it, the more logical it was that Colonel Celchu and Wedge Antilles’ delight was due to the mere fact he was an Imperial and Baron Fel’s son who just broke protocol to help a squad member, the squad leader, save face. He was becoming like them.

A bit relieved Jag moved onto other matters. Though satisfying the rumbling in his midsection and freshening up should have taken priority, it was a need to see her that moved him to the direction she most likely ventured.

Since meeting her Jaina had not yet taken heed of any of his advice. So why would she, when he demanded she get rest, be in someone’s quarters other than her own?

With Jaina’s family off Borleias on various missions it only made sense that she would seek friendly comfort with the Jedi Master. Between his own observations and Kyp’s revelation on Hapes about the man most suited for her, Jag was quite confident that there was nothing else but friendship with the two Jedi.

So why was his stride slowing with each kilometer? If he was honest with himself Jag was becoming afraid of seeing her after being so impulsive.

Jaina had bottled so much inside since her brothers’ deaths, making it only a matter of time before she became overwhelmed. And his prodding for the answer to why she risked everything to save him was what seemed to have been the straw that broke the proverbial Bantha’s back. She broke down.

It was during that mental collapse when he got his answer. Jaina not wanting him to go away could have meant anything really. But to someone who was fast on track to falling in love with her Jag took it an admission these feelings were reciprocal. So he acted.

He had no regrets, whether he had read Jaina correctly or not. His only fear was that he had distorted that tempered bar so much it could never return to normal.

It was time to face that fear as he suddenly found himself at his destination.

**

Being the Goddess Jaina had been given larger than normal quarters with a private fresher, probably belonging to an Imperial Commander back before Coruscant was liberated. After taking a refreshing cool shower she stood in the center, wiping off the remaining droplets of water off her skin with a towel.

“I don’t get him.” She said aloud, another perk for having no roommate.

“Why did he do it?”

Jag was going to sacrifice himself to the Vong so she could get back to Borleias. He was going to have Wedge send his family a notice of death so that her parents didn’t lose their remaining child. He was going to go away.

I won’t go anywhere. He said.

Why won’t you go anywhere?

Because I don’t want to

Those were his words before he kissed her. It had been so unexpected.

All this time she had thought he viewed her as nothing more than a rebel princess, someone inferior to his kind. But he had followed her here and joined her squadron. Sure he was interested in the Force tactics she and Kyp were going to try. And he contributed to its success even though he was as Force blind as her father.

Yet, he had to have a personal interest as well, for him to kiss her like that.

Or was he just predicting again, as exact as he always had, what she needed. Jag wouldn’t yell at her if he thought it would make things worse. Was this his attempt to temporarily solve her problem until she was calm enough to receive that scolding?

Jaina plopped down on the bunk, disheartened she could be right. Her discarded flightsuit lay beside her. Picking it up Jaina dangled it just beneath her nose. Jag’s presence still lingered.

Smiling she couldn’t get over how great he smelled. Just another thing that was perfect about him, which brought back her thinking of how he could desire someone like her.

Not knowing what really motivated his actions was going to drive Jaina mad. She needed someone that she could confide her thoughts to, who could help her sort through her own feelings, someone who knew her well enough to tell her how wrong she was. She needed her mother.

But with her parents off to the Maw and the only one qualified to take her place, Mara, off on a mission too, that left Kyp Durron. Jaina was a bit hesitant after their adventure on Hapes. But she was going to talk about that with him anyway. What better way to make clear what he was to her, than to discuss her feelings for Jag.

Throwing on a simple green t-shirt with black pants and boots, Jaina went off to see her temporary Master.

**

The two rounded opposite corners of the hallway at the same time. Neither acknowledged they saw the other, just continued walking until they met outside the Jedi Master’s quarters.

“Colonel.” Jaina said quietly, her voice doing its best not to betray her nervousness.

“Goddess.”

Jag’s tone showed no disdain for her charade, just the same uncertainty Jaina felt in the conference room.

“I’m here to see Kyp.” She blurted. The moment these words left her lips she berated herself because Jag might misinterpret the reason. As usual, he showed no sign of jealousy, if he harbored it at all.

To her surprise he told her, “I’m here looking for you.”

So he assumed correctly again what she would do. Before today Jaina would find that very irritating. Today it thrilled her.

“I was hoping to finish our discussion.”

With that her heart fell. Of course he’d want to seek her out and finish. This was the part she assumed was coming earlier, where he would tell her that she was a horrible leader and that what happened between them was just a mistake.

Well, she might as well get it over with. “This way.”

The doorway to the roof was just down the same hall. Like the gentleman he was, Jag yielded and followed her up the steps. However, half way up he took her arm. “Here’s fine.”

Jaina was two steps above him but he made no motion forward which would make him tower over her. Instead he remained at eye level, his face displaying again a hesitation while he gathered the words to say. So again, she started to give him those words.

“I acted like child. You’re right. I can’t obviously do it. I’m going to tell Commander Antilles that the Goddess…”

“What are you talking about?” Jag interjected.

“I’m talking about you telling me that I can’t handle it.”

Just then, Jag did the most human thing she’d ever seen. He rolled his eyes at her.

“I never said you couldn’t. Personally I think you can. You just can’t do it alone.”

Jag began to tell her that that the only way to make that happen was to let in those she shut out after her brothers died. Family was the most important and though outwardly she seemed indifferent with her parents, inside she was hurting.

“You also have to rely on us more, me and Master Durron.”

The two were there to make her ideas into realty. They both had the leadership and fighting skills necessary to make her look like the religious sovereignty she was portraying. Jaina just had to trust them to do that.

She took it all in and agreed. “I will. And I promise no more juvenile displays.”

Again the green of his eyes caught her attention as they circled around before narrowing in disappointment. The edge to his voice returned.

“Don’t ever, not as the Goddess, not even when this is over.” He hissed. “Don’t regret or try to change your actions after the fact.”

Whether she did or not, she was never to show it. The only thing she could do, should do, was to learn from it.

“And that’s what you do.” Jaina said the hurt that's what he did evident.

His response was a sigh and for another time today, Jaina regretted what she said.
And yet again this Imperial pilot was going to surprise her.

Taking her hands in his Jag brought them to him and her with them, reviving that whoozy feeling being so close to him again.

“I don’t say things I don’t mean. I don’t do things I don’t want to.”

With that his face moved closer and as his lips met with hers, the door at the bottom of the stairs began to shake, as if it someone was trying to get up to the roof but the door was locked from this side.

Giving her a half smile Jag released his hold and went to investigate. He waited until the person that was there had gone before calling her down.

“Someone’s going to notice you’re gone.” He whispered, an indication that their talk was over.

She was a bitten saddened to have it end but understood his concern. She listened as he advised her to get that rest. He would wait a few minutes before leaving. Nodding, she acknowledged his concern that they not be noticed by the Vong spies suspected to be among them.

When she felt the least passersby, Jaina opened the door and slipped into the hallway. She didn't look back. She just kept going, right passed her initial destination.

She walked as casual as possible until coming upon the empty quarters belonging to her parents. Jag was right that she felt guilty how she treated them, treated her mother. And though they were gone at the moment she was going to get her rest here, where their presence was, every chance she could, until they returned and she could make things right.
