Title: The Amplifier Amplifies
Author: My buddy who does not have an account here. Give good feedback and we might get to see more.
Genre: Uh, AU definitely, maybe some angst.
Timeframe: After ROTJ, approximately 4, 5 years.
Summary: A mishap concerning a redeemed/rescued Anakin Skywalker and a paranormal talents amplification device type thingy causes major havoc at Stargate Command.
Disclaimer: It’s really a pity that we don’t own Star Wars. Neither do we own Harry Potter, Stargate SG-1, The Mummy, or Tamora Pierce’s Immortals series (dang.). We do, however, own Mariah/Kulamar, Randy VonHoffenheimer, Naroko Chiston, Arianna Esdel, Corrixel pack Skywalker, Chong Sin, Nicolai Tchaikowscovitch, Hiro Nagasuru, Ana Harrison, Darril, Daryl, and Larry, and pretty much anyone you don’t recognize.

Author’s Note: This is set in the SG-C, so Gate fans will see some familiar faces. Jedi Knight/Healer Naroko and her Padawan Ari rescued Anakin from the Death Star after he told Luke to leave him. An author moderately irritated with Anakin’s physical difficulties (i.e., me) dumped Anakin in a Goa’uld sarcophagus so he doesn’t need major life support. However, he still has the prosthetics and major scarring. Somewhere along the line AAN ran into Corrixel, a young N’ryt (a saurian being similar in build to a velociraptor with spikes) who promptly adopted Anakin as a foster father and addresses him as “An’kin”. Captain Mariah Sanders is host to a Tok’Ra named Kulamar and is the unknown fifth member of SG-1. Chong Sin, Nicolai Tchaikowscovitch, Hiro Nagasuru, and Ana Harrison are four lieutenants that are part of out “international cadet exchange program” for the base. Darril, Daryl, and Larry are Marines. Randy VonHoffenheimer is the local mathematics wiz. Everytown is a nexus world connecting every storyline/parallel universe/alternate dimension/ etc. thinkable and it the reason that so many characters are on Earth. (inhales after reading above paragraph in one long breath) Okay, now onto the story.

The Amplifier Amplifies:

"What," Anakin Skywalker inquired slowly, not quite believing his eyes, "is that?"

His companion, the spindly, dark-skinned mathematician Randy VanHoffenheimer, adjusted his rimless glasses proudly. "That is a paranormal talents magnitude amplifier. After exhaustive studies of all you psionics, magic, and Force-using people on base, I compiled the set of underlying formulas that enable this device to work."

He gestured expansively at what resembled an oil drum with two curved panels merging into either side, creating an enclosed circular space behind the thing. A pair of rounded, bronze-colored knobs were set into the top of the drum, tiny lights blinking in between.
"It was built by a specialty manufacturing firm in Everytown-- think of the tests I can run! I'll finally be able to see if there is a true redundancy pattern underlying increasing values of p in 'the square root of p plus twenty six over the log of q times six to the negative p to the second times two a b...

Anakin hastily changed the subject before the overenthusiastic mathematician could get too carried away. "Yes, but what does it do?"

"What does it do?" VanHoffenheimer repeated incredulously, "Why, it's a paranormal talents magnitude amplifier. It amplifies one's power, whatever it may be."
He pointed a pencil at a series of labeled dials on the front of the drum. "For example, I know that you can detect another Force-user from thousands of miles away without undue concentration. If we hooked, oh, say, Ari up to this, she could do the same thing, provideing all the controls were set properly. Just think, proof for my strain/magnitude theorems!"
After punctuating that last statement with a couple pencil flourishes, Randy replaced it behind his ear. "That is, if it works properly. I haven't had it tested yet."

Anakin experimentally tapped a panel with one metal finger, still absorbing this information. Interesting. If this device could boost Ari's powers like that, what would it do... to him?

Interesting idea.

I want to see what it will do for Anakin...how far will it boost his powers.

Please update!

Congratulations to Terech_Deckard, the first (and so far only) person to comment! You get a cookie! If you get others to R'&'R, you get another cookie!

"All right, everyone," Randy VanHoffenheimer announced from his position at a desk next to the amplifier, armed with several tons worth of paper and pencils, "Who wants to go first?"
Assembled were a number of mages, wizards, Jedi, psychics, and other, unclassified oddballs, all inspecting the mad scientist and his machine with the air of curiosity shop visitors.
All, that is, except one.

"Oh! Me! Me! Pick me!" Ari shrieked, practically levitating in her attempt to be noticed. Suceeding, too-- the others drew back inconspicuously, leaving her in an empty semicircle. Fine with them if she wanted to be the guina pig.

Randy jerked a thumb at his device, readying a pencil. "Okay, Ari. Come on up."

Anakin watched from his position near the doorway as VanHoffenheimer set the dials to 'Force,' '100x,' and directed Ari to place her hands on the bronze knobs. Lights flashed on the interior of the panels. A stuttering hum rose several octaves before settling into an irritating whine. The lights stopped flashing, a lone bulb glowing green.
VanHoffenheimer cracked his knuckles, setting pencil to paper. He nodded to Ari. "How does it feel?"

"Woah! Woah! Woah!"

"Fascinating." The mathematician scribbled several pages of variable-filled equations, then asked, "What's changed from normal?"

"WOAH!!!"

He scribbled some more, going through sheets of equations like a newspaper press.
Ari finally managed to form intelligible words. "Is- is this what it feels like to be Naroko?" She could hardly make sense out of all these new impressions, but it was fun!

Randy checked his lines of nonsense. "Actually, you're nearly at Anakin's level. So tell me--"

"What? Cool! Hey, Naroko! CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

Anakin winced, along with every other Force-user in the base. That was the loudest broadcast he'd ever heard. Besides himself, he'd been told.
So it did work.

His curiosity grew to rival his reputation as the skinny mathematician ran through several other tests, hooking up Mariah/Kulamar, Snowflake (Speed regrettably wasn't available, although as she was semi-omnipotent already, Anakin doubted whether the amplifier would have any effect), Mynah, a mage called 'Daine,' someone referred to as a 'Talent,' and a local crackpot from Denver who made a living telling fortunes.

Finally, he made a decision.

"VanHoffenheimer, I'm going to try your device."

Randy looked up from his latest theorem. "But I've already tested a Jed--"

Anakin was already between the panels. "I'm not a Jedi." He flipped every dial to full. "Have that pencil ready."

He lightly touched the bronze fittings before anyone could say more.
The ex-Sith wasn't sure what to expect: a power surge, a steady flow, a sudden expansion of conciousness, something based on what he'd seen.

But he wasn't prepared for... nothing.
Wait, not quite nothing, there was... something... Something...
The Force surged-- and then light exploded in his plated skull with the impact of a sledgehammer. He instinctively tried to cover his eyes, but he couldn't move, his own power holding him frozen, the sledgehammer battering him over and over, his defenses disintigrating, dimly aware of the sounds of shattering glass and crumpling metal, people shouting-- and then a single, agonized scream, fading into blackness far darker than night.
It was that place... he knew that place well.
It was Void.

Anakin... you were the Chosen One... you were my brother, Anakin... I loved you... Lord Vader-- Anakin can you hear me... are you-- is she all right... I'm afraid-- there was an accident... you-- you killed her... I couldn't have... I killed her... we-- we're worried about you, Anakin-- Vader-- wake up!

Blurred shapes. Something was wrong with one arm. Gravity-- he was on his back, wasn't he?
More blurred shapes. Voices, he didn't like voices or blurred visions, but couldn't remember why... it was so hard to concentrate. His head felt like it had been stuffed with cotton balls, circuits replaced by strands of yarn. "What? What hap--"

An unfamiliar voice. "Anakin, there was an accident--"

He knew that! What did they think he was, blind as well as an animated lightning rod?
Lightning. Lightning was fear, pain, torture, the Emperor, in its own way worse than fire.
Fire!

All right, Tereck, since you've been so patient, here's the next bit:

"Are you okay, Anakin?"

Who was that?
Why did they keep asking--

Obi-Wan! It was Obi-Wan, looking down at him in horror, grief, pity.

"Am I okay?" Anakin repeated, trying to lunge but failing, his left arm trapped under something. Or was it hacked off? He couldn't tell, he couldn't think straight-- "Look at me! I am not 'okay' after what you did to me!"

He furiously hurled Obi-Wan at the nearest outcropping of blackened rock. The Jedi hit with an odd, stereo exclamation, slid, and vanished.

Anakin tried again to get up, to investigate, to finish him--

Something wrenched in his trapped arm and he suddenly discovered that he was pinned under several cracked peices of concrete and a large, twisted metal panel.

Concrete? He searched for meaning and drew a puzzled blank.

It didn't matter. He slammed the debris away, chunks ricocheting off invisible barriers instead of thudding to the burning ground.

There was something wrong about that, he knew it, but couldn't... quite...
What was wrong with him?

Everything. He was a twisted wreck and it was all due to Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan and--
You did that yourself... you were the Chosen One...

"Stop saying that!"

Choking dust filled the air as desperate tides of raw power pulverized the surrounding cement, trying to find Obi-Wan, to annihilate him before the flames roared into his lungs, he was suffocating...
There he was! Hiding behind the crumpled metal panel, like a coward, he was...
The robed form seemed to shift.
He... it--

It was Mariah/Kulamar.
What was she doing here? She--maybe she could get him out, out of the lower area, the dangerous area, out of the superheated poison ravaging his system before the fire--
The fire! The fire, it was everywhere!

He wasn't even aware of his surroundings anymore, sinking to his knees, clutching head in hands in blind confusion. Lost, no way out...

"Help... Help me..."

Mariah/Kulamar hefted a chunk of relatively intact cement. "Can't have you going ballistic on the way to Dr. Frasier. Sorry about this--"
Anakin was again plunged into darkness.

* * * * *

Mariah is a Tok'Ra host- her name is Mariah Sanders. Kulamar of Mulshere is her symbiote. Just to clear up any confusion.

Just for you, Tereck:

He woke to people conversing in hushed tones.

"I don't care what VanHoffenheimer was doing down there: the fact remains that we have severe
structural damage to over half the base! The government--"

"General Hammond, although that is a lovely shade of purple, you have to calm down. Like I said, it was not intentional. Mariah said Skywalker was delirious and confused when she finally got through the rubble to him."

"Then explain the damages incurred afterwards!"

"He was unconcious! I don't know what happened down there, but with all due respect, General, I need you out of my infirmary. This patient is unstable!"

A medical cot hurled itself between the two speakers.

"This patient is awake," Anakin growled, sitting up with difficulty. He glanced at his unresponsive left prosthetic. The forearm was crumpled. "And this patient would like to know what's going on."

The general was very agitated. "Frasier, put him under again so we can take him to a secure facili--"

He didn't get to finish his sentence before Anakin grabbed him around the throat and tossed him out the door, locking it.

Acid green eyes regarded Frasier, framed by ruinous scars. "As I was saying, Doctor, what's going on?" The unnatural tint slowly faded. "What's happening to me?"

Dr. Frasier drew up a chair, business-like. She'd dealt with psychiatric patients before, and knew not to aggravate them by beating around the bush. Especially this one.
"All I know, Anakin, is that several hours ago the base just began to shake apart-- girders in the practice areas bending, cracks opening up in foot-thick concrete walls, the roof even collapsing in a few spots (no one hurt, thank goodness). Everything weaker than plate metal that wasn't protected somehow was crushed. People and anything else not bolted down were flying all over the place. We're lucky we safeguarded our vital areas so well-- but even I had things break. Dunonendaine isn't perfect, after all.
Anyway, we sent Mariah/Kulamar down to find you after most of the destruction stopped, and she eventually got you back here. What I don't understand is why things kept breaking even after I drugged you so you wouldn't dream... Has that ever happened before?"

Anakin considered. He had tossed things around in his sleep before, usually during the worst nightmares or with outside interference.
"Never. Not when I'm completely unconscious."

The good Doctor rose from her chair. "I'm no expert in these matters, but could it be that--"

"I am not losing control." A rack of test tubes cracked. "I've had this power all my life. It won't get away from me now." The test tubes shattered. "It can't!"

His power was the only thing he had left-- everyone he'd ever known was gone. They had lied to him, turned on him, abandoned him... and so he'd been forced to destroy them, to kill every single one of their kind. Even... even...

Mathter Thkywalker, what do we do?

He had never intended for it to come to this.
But he had no choice.
The Jedi, hundreds of Jedi, everywhere, attacking his troops, attacking him, he killed and killed and killed... and there was nothing inside but that silent scream.
What have I done?

Dr. Frasier saw the blank madness in Skywalker's rapidly shifting eyes and felt the room begin to shake and got out of there as fast as she could. A doctor had to be alive to minister to her patients, after all-- and it was time to talk to an expert in these matters.

Since Tiger and Tereck are so patient, I'll update today.
*sends readers Force-hugs* Thanks guys!

"A paranormal talents magnitude amplifier," Obi-Wan repeated dully.
He was in the safehouse dug into the very lowest level, along with most of the base personnel and as many ysalamiri as they could rescue before their storage room collapsed. They needed those ysalamiri, too-- aside from keeping the safehouse relatively intact, they kept the occupants conscious and fully functioning.

Chong Sing had been flung down a hallway. Mynah had been in VanHoffenheimer's test room when the roof collapsed. Daniel was found under the toppled remains of the espresso machine.
Jedi were hit even worse: Naroko was unconscious and nearly in convulsions by the time they found her.

Obi-Wan sat silently for a moment, realizing the implications of the mathematician's statement. Then he treated him to a pained glare. "Are you crazy? You should have known something like this would happen!"

Randy indignantly waved a sheaf of equations thicker than the Sunday paper. "No, no, it's not what you think--"

"Anakin was the most powerful Jedi in history to begin with! Why did you have to go and..." The Jedi slumped against the wall in exasperation, muttering, "He was enough trouble already."

"No," Randy insisted, shoveling papers into Obi-Wan's lap, "That's not what happened! If you'll take a look at dot diagram 1168-b--"

"Dot diagrams? You're going to explain this in dot diagrams? I--"
A loud clang of metal on metal rang through the heavily reinforced space. Everyone turned to see the blast doors slide laboriously open, revealing a single, small figure.

"Dr. Frasier!" Dukay greeted her in Texas twang, tumbleweeds straining at the bit, "Glad you made it. We was gettin' worried about you."

The doctor brushed off cement dust. "I'm glad I made it, too. I have some things to tell you." She selected a crate of emergency supplies and gratefully lowered herself onto it. "Anakin is in the infirmary. He is very unstable, mentally and, it seems, power-wise. He is aggressive and very confused, half the time doesn't know where he is, and is in all probability hallucinating.

Naroko weakly raised a hand. "That's the impression I got. Too well, in fact."

Frasier nodded. "That's not all, I'm afraid. Anakin doesn't seem to have full control over his power. It just... lashes out. Almost at random. I don't know what happened, but when he starts losing track of his surroundings, there is little to no restraint as far as the Force
is concerned."

"No restraint is right," Mariah/Kulamar piped up from the back, "When he mistook me for Obi-Wan, he pounded the cement to dust looking for us."

Obi-Wan blanched.

"...thought he was choking on lava fumes. Poor guy. He really is confused." She swung on a pipe. "Not that we want to do that again or anything."

Snatching his papers from Obi-Wan, Randy finally elbowed his way to the front. "I did some figuring, and I know what the amplifier did to Skywalker." He studiously ignored the glares arrowing towards him from every corner of the room, dragging a machine gun tripod over to the center and stacking his papers against it. Selecting one, he held it up for all to see, regardless of whether it made sense to anyone or not. "First off-- the machine did not amplify his power. His signature matrix is over zero, which threw off some of the primary formulas, particularly p two equals Mp plus the log of--"

Feal clapped her hands over her pointed ears. "I could study for a thousand years and never understand a single variable of your nonsense. Tell us with proper words!"

A miffed VanHoffenheimer conceded. "Fine. I'll try. But it will be very, very difficult, so don't say I didn't warn you." He straightened his glasses. "As I was saying, his signature matrix messed up my formulas. Usually if that happens, the machine simply won't work. However, when that problem is combined with the uncertainty function inherent in his Force distortion..."

"Huh?" Nicolai inquired brightly, long since pushed out of the brain plane without a parachute.

"I think he's talking about the disturbance that all Jedi create in the Force," Naroko whispered, catching the plummeting Russian with the helicopter hook of revelation.

"Ooooh."

"...mathematically similar to a black hole, distorting the perception and sometimes abilities of those around him, the equations for which are exceedingly complex. When this set of calculations is put into the same framework as his power matrix and the underlying concepts of the machine, the formula come out to... infinity."

Pause for effect.

"And, as you know, since infinity can't be translated very well, the amplifier, well..." He spread his hands helplessly. "It backfired."

The Jedi didn't do a very good job of teaching Anakin if he was dividing by zero.

If it backfired, does that mean Anakin is close to normal?

Thanks for the PM and paragraphs.

Interesting concept...I like where it has gone so far. Will we see Anakin become a normal person and leave the order, free to marry? Hmmm...

TigerofRobare: I think you are mistaken. Randy VonHeffenheimer is a mathmatician. He has somehow managed to describe a Jedi's power in purely mathematical terms (don't ask me how- I didn't write it!). The result is that Randy now has some equation for Anakin that happens to be divided by zero- hence his relative instability. Since his equation thing is over zero, the machine backfired. Anakin is not normal. And much thanks for reading! *hands out cyber-cookie*

Tereck_Deckard: Ummm... who is Zod? This takes place after he was rescued be Naroko and Ari in ROTJ, so technically the Order as we know it has already been destroyed. The Jedi you see here are here as a result of time/reality travel and only just managed to escape the Purge. A s for the rest, well, you'll see! Thanks for sticking with us over here! *Hands out more cyber-cookies*

The next two posts are kinda short, but at least it's early!

"So let me get this straight," Chong Sin said mockingly, for the third time, "The amplifier doesn't. It backfires on people so they go Bing! like a rubber band and start intermittently freaking out and pulverizing everything around them without any awareness of what they're doing because their twisted little minds are in replay mode complete with halluc-o-vision and surround sound?"

Naroko nodded wearily. "Yes, Chong."

"And even when they're lucid, they're apt to go off at any second?"

"Yes, Chong."

"And Skywalker was crazy already." The Chinese shook his head. "Couldn't have happened to a better guy."

They sat silently for a moment, listening to the thuds and rumbles coming from uplevel.
Ana typed distractedly on a keyboard.

Hiro abruptly sat up. "When will this place stop banging around? A hallucination can't last that long."

"I was just looking that up," Ana informed him, fingers whirring, "and I found a site on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder that seems to cover a lot of Anakin's problems. It says here that hallucinogenic flashbacks can last--" she looked up, "--for days."

Nicolai flung his hands in the air. "Great. Just great. We're going to be stuck down here for a month. At least we have plenty of food." He glanced at the towering racks of MREs. "If you can call those food."

Naroko stood up, ignoring the pounding in her head. She had been pummeled unconscious by Anakin's rampant agony, hate, terror, a confusion of horrifying images burned into her subconscious before a rescue team managed to drag her out. Her brain hurt. "VanHoffenheimer did say that Anakin should eventually stop thrashing around like that: power-wise, anyway. No telling for anything else yet."

The mathematician was rapidly disappearing behind stacks of scrawled paper.

With a sigh, the Alderaanian Jedi gazed at the huddled, emergency-lit bands of refugees scattered between the MRE-stocked shelves of the safehouse. "He's working on it."
