Prologue
The news that the Imperial fleet had been defeated at Endor, and that Emperor Palpatine had died, spread like wildfire across the galaxy. Soon, massive celebrations were breaking out on nearly every planet, despite the best efforts of the remaining Imperial governors. Even on Coruscant, the citizens rallied, forming into riotous hordes, tearing down every visage of Palpatine they could find.
Ydni Ruolka watched out the window of his apartment as the scene unfolded before him. For eighteen years he had served as one of the Emperor’s chief archaeologists, searching the galaxy for lost Sith relics. Now, his career, his life was crashing around him just as mightily as the statue in the square below. The rumbling sound of the collapsing figure was followed by a thunderous cheer from the crowd, and Ydni had to turn away, great tears of desperation welling up in his eyes.
As he passed by the lounge area of the residence, the voice of the holonews reporter caught his attention, changing his desperation into fear laced with anger.
“The city’s security teams have been unsuccessful in maintaining any sense of order. Looting is becoming widespread, with some of the opportunists even being so bold as to break into the Imperial Palace.”
The Imperial Palace… the personal residence of the Emperor, and repository for the most significant Sith artifacts in his collection. Artifacts which Ydni had spent his life seeking out. Dropping into a chair, he brought his hands to his face, trying to block out the images, but it was no use. Soon the stormtroopers would be called in and would secure the Palace… but how much would be lost? How much more could he lose?
********************
It had taken two days for things to return to a level to which Ydni felt safe going out. He immediately made his way to the Palace, and once there, to the Emperor’s private chambers. He had been there many times before, kneeling before Palpatine with a newly acquired relic. He remembered the room being very regal, powerful. Now, in the waning light of the early evening it seemed dead, as dead as the Emperor himself.
As he looked around the room he was sickened. The walls, the shelves, display cases… all empty. The floor was littered with broken glass, and broken artifacts. One piece in particular caught his attention. He picked up the broken portion, the head of an ancient statuette. Ydni fought back the memories, but was unable to stop them from bursting into his mind. He recalled the many weeks he spent searching, coming up empty, before finally uncovering this work of art… his first discovery.
His sorrow turned to rage as he turned and threw the now worthless stone across the office. His hope was to break something else, give his anger some satisfaction, but nothing breakable remained in the room. He grunted in frustration as the broken chunk hit Palpatine’s throne-like chair, and bounced under the desk. Then he heard the quiet
beep
.
Running to the desk, Ydni knelt down and peered underneath. There, hidden from normal sight, was a small button.
Must be some kind of silent alarm
, Ydni guessed. He gazed at it, like a child being told ‘Do not touch’. And just as such, curiosity won out over common sense.
Ydni reached out and depressed the button, the
beep
sounding louder this time. As he jumped from under the desk, the wall to his left began to slide away. Behind the wall was an alcove, approximately two meters square. Cautiously he strode toward the recess, noticing for the first time the articles within.
In the center of the room stood a type of podium, and upon it rested an ancient, worn book. Ydni could tell immediately that the writing on the cover was Sith, but of a style much more archaic than he was knowledgeable about. To the left of the podium was a silver scepter with two forked spikes at the top. Ydni recalled the day it had been brought in by one of his colleagues. Palpatine’s reaction was ecstatic at receiving what he termed ‘the Scepter of Ragnos’.
Looking to the right of the podium, Ydni saw the last relic… a gauntlet embedded with a Sith amulet. He moved to lift the gauntlet, but drew back. Hesitantly he reached out again, hefting the glove and placing it on his right hand. Though not a Sith Lord himself, Ydni could feel the power of the Force radiating from the amulet. As he looked back at the book, he was elated to realize that he could make sense of the characters. He removed the gauntlet and the writing became incomprehensible again. Slowly he slipped the glove on once more, and picked up the other items. The sudden sound of a charging blaster stopped him in his tracks and made his breath catch in his throat.
“I knew there had to be more. Thanks for helping me find it… friend.”
The voice was low, greasy, distinctive of the type of criminal who would very willingly shoot someone in the back. Yet his tone of voice suggested that this man would rather wait for him to turn around, so he could see Ydni’s eyes as he blasted him to oblivion.
“Now turn around, slowly.”
Ydni did as he was asked, bringing the stranger into full view. He was Zabrak, his horns reflecting brightly from the lights of the alcove. He wore a long, black overcoat which covered most of his tattered tunic and pants, and boots with the leather beginning to separate from the soles. Ydni was sure that he was from one of the many alien ghetto areas, probably Invisec. But his clothes were easily overshadowed by the BlasTech E-11 blaster rifle he held in his hands. It was almost assured that he had taken it off a dead stormtrooper.
“Good. Now hand over the goods and I might just let you live.”
The smile on the Zabrak’s face told Ydni all he needed to know. There was no way this thug was going to let him leave this room in one piece. As the realization dawned on Ydni he felt the power from the glove growing. Almost as a dream he watched as his right hand, of its own accord, raised the Scepter of Ragnos and hurled it at his assailant. The Zabrak’s eyes grew wide and he wailed as the scepter’s two prongs sunk deep into his chest. As his body fell lifeless, his finger reflexively squeezed the trigger of his blaster, and the errant shot tore through the right side of Ydni’s abdomen.

WooHoo! This is too cool! I love the premise and the Yndi character. Your writing is so eloquent as always. Loved the artwork, too. Is there nothing you can't do?
"He remembered the room being very regal, powerful. Now, in the waning light of the early evening it seemed dead, as dead as the Emperor himself.'
This part took me by surprise because I'm happy that Palpatine is dead and yet I'm feeling sorry for Yndi. His sorrow was so palatable.
Very well done!

Thank you! I'm glad you are liking the story so far. And I'm glad you liked the artwork. For things I can't do: I can't put my legs behind my head, or touch my tongue to my nose. I can pretty much do everything else
This Prologue is just to set up a few plot points and then we will get into the real meat of the story. Ydni was a fun character to write. I'm glad I was able to bring out some emotion with him, despite how closely he worked with the Emperor. Thanks again sis!
PRINCESSCAMBRIA:
Well, I'm glad that it looks promising, and that you are enjoying it so far. The real story begins next chapter, and really gets going as we move on from there. I hope that I can keep it interesting and exciting.
Thanks for the kudos on the artwork!
Cheers,
Wyo

Chapter 1
Power in life, Power in respite. Power joined to drive out the Light.
True Sith, death’s hold can’t keep. The Heart of Darkness, though silent, merely sleeps.
-- Excerpt from the Book of Souls - the mantra of entombment
The sound of a thud out in the hallway followed by his mother’s scream had Joyn Ruolka exiting his room within two heartbeats. The scene before him stopped him in his tracks and brought a look of disbelief to his face.
His father, Ydni, lay just inside the front doorway on his back. His left hand held his lower right torso, but was doing little good halting the blood that flowed from the massive wound there, pouring onto the floor. His mother frantically tried to help in whatever way she could, but the constant surge of tears from her eyes and the cries catching in her throat made it nearly impossible.
Overcoming his emotion, Joyn pushed forward, moving in front of his mother to see what small assistance he could be. At fifteen years old he was far from a medical professional, but he had received some first aid training as preparation for entering the academy. As he moved his father’s hand, he knew his knowledge was insufficient. He tried to comfort his father after sending his mother to call for the emergency medtechs.
“Dad… it’s gonna be… it’s gonna be alright. It’s not that bad, really.”
“You’re a terrible liar son. I can feel how bad it is.”
As Ydni spoke, his lips showed red with blood, and a few drips escaped from the corners of his mouth. Joyn had to look away for a few seconds to compose himself. As he was doing so, he felt his father’s body stiffen with pain and his grip tightened around Joyn’s right arm. Turning around he saw the evidence of the pain on his father’s face, eyes widening in fear and ultimate realization.
As the pain subsided, Ydni drew Joyn toward him.
“Son… I’m not gonna make it.”
“That’s not true, you’ll be fine…”
“NO! Now listen to me. Listen, listen… You must take the book.”
For the first time since everything had begun Joyn noticed the ancient looking, blood covered volume lying on the floor near his father. He looked tentatively at it then back to his father.
“Dad, I can’t…”
“You must! There is power in it. I’ve felt it! The Power of the Sith. You must use it to restore the Sith, to restore order!”
Ydni removed the gauntlet from his right hand, then reached out for the book, ignoring the pain that shot throughout his body with the exertion. He held the relics close to his chest for a few seconds before pushing them into his son’s hands.
“Promise me you will use the book.”
Joyn was racked with multiple conflicting emotions. He wanted to be strong and do as his father asked, but he was frightened. If he accepted the assignment he was accepting his father’s death as an inevitable reality.
“I’m afraid. I don’t want to…”
“Promise me. Promise me!”
Joyn could see the desperate look in his father’s eyes as his body shook with pain and the cold of looming death. As much fear as he felt, he knew he needed to do this to give his father peace. Hesitantly he spoke again, his voice breaking through the sobs that uncontrollably tightened his throat.
“Y-yes. I promise, father. I promise.”
He watched a smile cross his father’s face at the same moment that he felt his grasp slacken and go limp. His father was gone.
That had been twenty-six years before, and yet the emotions and images of that day were as fresh in Joyn’s mind as if they had just occurred. Now though, he sat in the pilot’s seat of his ship, watching the blue-white of Hyperspace swirl past the cockpit viewport. He flexed the black gauntlet on his right hand feeling the power from the amulet coursing through the leather of the glove. The glove. It had become as much a part of him as his own name, or his acquired knowledge. No... it was more than that. It represented all he had become, all he had done in his life. This glove... this glove was his life.
Looking down, he stole a glance at the book that lay on the control board… the Book of Souls. He reached out and hefted the tome, its familiar feel in his hands bringing a sense of order to his life. It had taken him a number of years of frustrated attempts to break the translation of the book, before he finally realized the power the glove had in bringing the words to realization in his mind. Once that simple fact had been established, reading the book became easy… understanding it was another story.
More time was spent deciphering the subtle nuances, wending his way through the multitude of metaphors of the ancient Sith culture. But all his work paid off as he uncovered coordinates hidden in the text leading him from one end of the galaxy to the other, to multiple worlds including Yavin, Korriban, and Ossus. On each world new information was revealed, along with new and varied artifacts.
Now he was pushing deeper and deeper into the Unknown Regions, approaching the end of his long journey. Twenty-six years… the majority of his life. Had it really been that long? He returned the book to its place on the console, then turned and reached behind his pilot’s chair, drawing forward a small satchel. He opened it carefully and looked at the three crystalline relics lying side by side at the bottom of it. Gently he reached in and ran his fingers over their features. He could feel a power within the three pieces together that they did not possess individually.
Joyn was unaware of how long he had been lost in thought before the alarms announcing the end of his hyperspace jump blared through the ship. Quickly he took hold of the controls and brought the ship back into normal space. As the swirling tunnel reverted back to star lines, then to bright pinpricks in the black velvet of space, Joyn peered out the viewport at his final destination.
The planet loomed larger with each moment as Joyn’s vessel drew nearer to it. He was amazed at how similar the planet looked to the Sith world of Korriban, except that this one seemed darker, more menacing. He unconsciously drew a long breath as the ship began its descent through the atmosphere. The vessel shook slightly as it passed through the turbulent currents of the upper atmosphere, yet Joyn kept his angle steady, his vision focused.
A few minutes later the craft’s repulsors kicked in and red dust blew up around it as the struts touched down. Slowly the ramp lowered and Joyn stepped out into the settling dust. The view he took in was powerfully magnificent. He had seen numerous tombs in his travels, but none were as impressive as the one that stood before him now. Joyn’s gaze was drawn up to the ancient Sith inscription scrawled above the entrance –
Revan iss’kaar Massi Jen’ari
– Revan, Supreme Dark Lord of the Sith.

Yippeee!!! An Update...I mean, HAARRR! An update! I really like this story so much. It feels mythologic in nature with the book and the amulet in play.
Shiver moment:
"Joyn’s gaze was drawn up to the ancient Sith inscription scrawled above the entrance – Revan iss’kaar Massi Jen’ari – Revan, Supreme Dark Lord of the Sith."
I don't think the guy knows what he's getting into!! The momma in me wants to shout, "Wait come back! Nothing good can come of this!"
Bravo and well done!

Glad you liked it. Yes, yes, an update finally! I never thought of it as mythological, but you make a great point with the book and amulet thing. They are very mythological, fantasy-type elements... and they will have a big role in the story, as you will see later.
Yes! I got a shiver moment. It always makes me feel great when I can get that kind of reaction out of the reader. Thanks sis!
We'll just have to wait and see what he is getting himself into won't we? I hope you continue to enjoy this. And I will try and be more forthcoming and timely with the updates. Thanks again!

Chapter 2
Despite the desert heat that seemed overwhelming outside the tomb, the corridors inside were cold causing Joyn to shiver uncontrollably. It wasn’t so much the temperature that caused the involuntary action, but a near tangible
presence
that chilled him to the bone. Regardless, Joyn rubbed the exposed skin of his arms with his hands, the friction staving off a small portion of the nipping cold.
Tentatively he continued down the passageways, his eyes darting every which way searching for the inevitable traps and dangers he had become accustomed to in other tombs… pits of poisoned spikes, rooms filled with rancors and other deadly creatures. And with each step he was more and more surprised that nothing out of the ordinary occurred. The hallways seemed to be simply what they appeared… the direct route to the heart of the crypt. Still he marched suspiciously on.
Continuing to rub his arms as they verged on numbness he followed the curve of the corridor and found himself staring at the point of a deadly spear. Instinctively leaping back he lost his footing and fell to the ground, the dust billowing up around him creating an ominous haze. He held his arms up in a feeble defense, sure that at any moment the spear point would find itself lodged in his heart. But the attack never came.
As the dust settled again Joyn stared at the spear, and the guard holding it. They remained frozen in the same position which had frightened him so. Joyn quickly stood and brushed himself off, then cautiously stepped forward.
Upon closer inspection he realized the reason the guard remained so still. True, the spear was deadly, but it was also of ancient design. And the armor worn by the sentinel would be sufficient in battle, but it was covered by the same thick layer of dust as the floor, its scarlet color barely visible through the dirt. The hand holding the spear, as well as the face under the helmet, was lifeless. Not merely lifeless. They were death itself, skeletal, the flesh having corroded and fallen away who knows how long before. Joyn’s mind went racing with the possibilities of the scene.
He must have died in the very act of guarding this place. Either that or he was a ceremonial guard and he was deceased before being placed here.
Joyn reached out and lightly touched the bones of the hand. As his fingers made contact the entire set of remains crumbled to powder, the armor and weapons falling into a pile of worthless metal in the midst of the archaic dust.
His heartbeat still quickened, Joyn continued his trek. From the evidence he had gathered – the ancient Sith inscriptions, the layers of dust, the ancient guard – he estimated that the tomb was at least 3000 years old, probably more. He could only imagine what great relics lie at the heart of this vault, undisturbed for millennia. With the details working through his mind in a constant loop he marched further onward.
The corridor made a few more turns before coming to an abrupt ending in front of a large stone door. Joyn inspected the door closely, noting the inscriptions surrounding its edge… and their translation.
Be it known by all who seek to pass beyond this portal; The Supreme Power of the Sith awaits you.
As he read aloud the words of the text they began to glow with a sinister, dark orange hue. Looking to his right he saw his gauntlet clad hand moving of its own accord toward the door, the amulet within it burning with the same sinister orange tinge. Helpless to stop the action he watched in awe as the glove became flush with the door and tendrils of blue electricity began to dance across it.
The electrical strands spread out across the door, highlighting the previously hidden Sith hieroglyphs etched lightly into the stone. Joyn was only able to decipher a few of the ancient symbols…
Death, Rebirth, Restoration
… before the currents of blue lightning seemed to soak into the door, concealing the glyphs once again. With a groan and the grinding of stone against stone the portico began to slowly recede into the walls.
Beyond the opening was a large circular room. Joyn had expected to find a burial chamber filled with all manner of artifacts, but it appeared that just the opposite was true. Certainly it was a burial chamber, at least he assumed that was its function, yet he did not see any sarcophagi as he had found in other Sith tombs. Where one should have been was a large, black obelisk standing over three meters tall, with glassy smooth sides and four horizontal projections near the top. Joyn reached out his hand to feel the polished stone, presuming it to be icy cold. He jerked back his hand with a gasp, the obsidian form burning hot to the touch and leaving his fingers slightly reddened.
While he reflexively blew on the injured fingertips he circled the enclosure to get a better sense of what he was seeing. On the three inner walls he observed recesses within each of which was a pedestal, made from the same glossy black stone as the obelisk, a shaped notch carved into the top of each one. It took him a few moments before realization dawned on him as to the purpose of the grooves. Reaching into his satchel he retrieved the three crystalline items tucked in the bottom and placed one in each of the corresponding platforms. A curl of smoke rose from the ground around the base of each pedestal until each alcove was hidden in an ethereal mist. From the midst of the haze the three crystals began to glow an eerie blue and a single strand of lightning emerged from each creating a tether between the artifact and its matching projection on the obelisk.
A hum emerged from the central form and filled the room like a rushing wind. As Joyn moved back to a position between the obelisk and the door his glove crackled with electricity and a bolt shot out from the now blue-white amulet to the fourth protrusion of the obelisk. Suddenly the glassy sides were alive with a web of sapphire lines moving toward the ground, creaking and screeching sounds replacing the previously melodious pulse. Joyn raised his hands to protect his ears from the piercing noise and watched in horror as the cracks expanded and the polished surfaces fell away in pieces, shattering on the floor.
The din settled back into an ominous silence and Joyn stood staring in amazement as a bright, shimmering blue personage materialized out of the rubble. The individual appeared as a man, tall and regal, with musculature that denoted great strength, yet his whole being was nearly transparent. With determined steps the specter approached Joyn and when he was within arms length he raised his hand and reached for Joyn’s throat, the ghostly appendage slipping effortlessly through his skin and clenching around his esophagus. As Joyn struggled for breath he could hear the voice of the specter as clear as a summer’s day.
“Freedom! You have restored the life that was taken too soon from me, and now your body will once again give me flesh and blood.”
Joyn’s eyes widened as he felt the spirit of this assailant forcing itself into his physical form, taking possession of it, his own soul being pushed aside.
“Do not fear young one. Your form will become that of Darth Revan reborn. Give in to the growing darkness and become one with the Power of the Sith.”
Joyn wanted to scream out in pain and anguish, but he was no longer in control of his body. All that he once was now existed only as part of Darth Revan. Slowly his soul faded into nothingness, replaced with the malice of the Dark Lord of the Sith.
------------------------------------------
Luke Skywalker sat in pensive meditation in his private room within the new Jedi Praxeum on Ossus. The Council had only recently agreed to move the Jedi headquarters to the planet and yet the temple structure was already complete and functioning. Luke did not know if it was his own ambition driving the speedy build, and he really was not concerned if it was. It had been many millennia since Ossus had been a hub of Jedi activity and the site of the Great Jedi Library. The Force still flowed powerfully through the planet and Luke was eager to return it to a center of learning, a place to rebuild the Order after the devastation of the Yuuzhan Vong War.
Continuing his meditation, Luke could feel the satisfaction in the hearts of the Jedi as they accomplished the work of subduing the land and raising an academy from the barren ground. Stretching out farther he could feel the pilots in the stars above Ossus performing training maneuvers, among them his niece, Jaina Solo. Allowing the flow of the Force to take him further still he sensed numerous worlds beyond the Adega system, the inhabitants going about their daily lives, oblivious to the light touch to their minds by the Jedi Master.
Suddenly a dark cloud seemed to engulf Luke’s mind and his eyes shot open at the feeling, his breathing becoming immediately quickened. Closing his eyes once again to calm himself, he attempted to also pinpoint where the sinister feeling had originated from. He could sense that it was an actual threat, although not immediate or nearby, however the details remained elusive. His initial concern was that it was a return of the Yuuzhan Vong, but that theory was quickly discarded as he realized the darkness flowed along the currents of the Force. The only conclusion Luke could make as to the source of so much dark power and disturbance in the Force was…
“The Sith.”

I really like how you described the transformation of Joyn to the Dark Lord of the Sith.
Can't wait to read more of your great story!

PRINCESSCAMBRIA:
Glad you liked it! It was really fun trying to figure out the best way to make it work. I think it turned out pretty well myself.
Cheers,
Wyo

Poor Joyn! I doubt this was what he ,or his father for that matter, wanted... Yet the story is very interesting. I'm looking forward to next chapters.
If You have a PM list-please add me to it.

Oh
yay
, my favorite Sith Lord is back in black.
I was immensely intrigued by the title description, and I came in to find quite a story indeed. I like how we weren't thrown into the action right away; actually, we still haven't seen much action. I like that. You're building a good state of affairs in which to work. Plus, the subtlety of events thus far is very fitting of Revan the master strategist.
I can't wait to read more.

master_jade:
I'm sure you're right with your assessment. As usually happens with the Sith, people don't realize what they are getting into until it is too late. Glad you are finding this interesting.
I will certainly add you to the PM list. Thanks!
Trayus:
Revan is my favorite as well. There is just a real power about him.
Glad that the description intrigued you. As for the action, I like to set up a firm foundation and then kick up the action. Don't worry... there will be plenty of action in the future, but also a great deal of subtlety. I hope you enjoy
Thanks!
Cheers,
Wyo
