	Title: Voice of Truth Author: brodiew Characters: Obi-Wan, Anakin Genre: Drama/angst Timeframe: ROTS-Mustafar Summary: Anakin considers suicide on Mustafar Author's Notes: The title is from a song of the same name bv Casting Crowns. This started as a drabble challenge form the Anakin/Vader thread, and stayed that way until part five when I just let it go on til I finished. I hope you enjoy. “By the Force…Obi-Wan…What have I…done?” “Your question is rhetorical, Darth Vader,” Obi-Wan replied, sternly. “Don’t say that name!” Anakin choked out, tears welling in his eyes. “I am not that man.” “Your actions say otherwise,” Obi-Wan said, stepping closer. “But it is possible to repair.” “How can you say that?” Anakin said, backing to the railing on the landing platform. “I have destroyed us!” “We are not completely dead, Anakin, as long as even a few remain.” “They will never forgive me.” “It will be the most difficult thing you have ever done, but you will earn their trust again.” ~~~~~~ “No! They will reject me even more than they have in the past!” His grip on railing tightening as his anger rose, again. “Anakin,” Obi-Wan said, calming his voice and drawing on the Force. “Your feelings betray you. Remember the code: There is no emotion. There is the Force. They will forgive. They have to.” “I appreciate you, Obi-Wan. I always have, but you are clutching at vapors. How will they forgive the murder of younglings?” Anakin took another step backward, and Force kicked the railing so that it fell to the chasm below. “Will you fight for her, Anakin?” ~~~~~~ Anakin froze, a chill paralyzing him, even in Mustafar’s heat. “She would not want you to give up, no matter what has been done,” Obi-Wan added. “You are brave to mention her, Obi-Wan,” Anakin whispered, his eyes downcast at the durasteel platform. “Seeing as she lies unconscious in the ship behind you; her injuries my fault.” Anakin’s heels hung over the platform as he balanced, perfectly, one the edge of the abyss. “I see what you are doing, Anakin,” Obi-Wan said, softly, pointing halfheartedly at his brother’s feet. “What is that, Master?” Anakin replied genuinely. “You are believing the lie.” ~~~~~~ “What lie is that, Master?” “That you are unlovable; that you are not worthy to be a son, a husband, or a father. I love you, Anakin. You are my son. It does matter, at this moment, what you have done. Padme loves you, too. You are her husband. If you are strong enough, if you can conquer the lie, you will also be a father.” Anakin closed his eyes and shook his head as he began bouncing on the balls of his feet. “The fire is calling me, Obi-Wan,” Anakin said, tears streaking his cheeks. “It’s sucking at me.” ~~~~~~ Obi-Wan’s serene posture straightened and his impassioned pleas fell silent. He stepped toe to toe with Anakin, his stern eyes ablaze as they bored into those of his son. “This is not your, decision, Padawan,” he said, boldly. “It is the Force that guides us, not ourselves. The Force wills where we go and what we do. Your life is not yours or mine or Padme’s. It belongs to the Force. Do not harden your heart because of the lie. Open yourself to Force and remember who you are.” Anakin’s shoulder’s fell and, for a moment, his head lolled. Reflexively, Obi-Wan reached out for Anakin’s robes, fearing he might fall. At the touch of his outer robe, Anakin’s hands flew up at lightning speed and latched onto his wrists. The two men stared into each other’s eyes for what seemed an eternity. Anakin finally broke the link, flicking his eyes to the ship beyond. Stepping forward, into Obi-Wan, Anakin released his wrist and embraced him. His hug was tight, and, at first Obi-Wan was unsure how to respond. His entire speech of family and the Force seemed words that were not his own. Tentatively, he returned the embrace, but soon fell wholly into it. “I am so sorry,” Anakin said as he began to shake against Obi-Wan. His embrace was still tight, as if Obi-Wan was a life preserver in the raging waters of Kamino. Letting go might mean he was lost forever. “Don’t worry now, Anakin,” Obi-Wan said, patting Anakin’s back lightly. “We will face this together…as we always have.” Edit: Post script: Some of you may recall a poem I wrote some time back called Forgiveness. This vig has been some time coming and compliments this poem completely. 	Wonderful! The opposite story than the one we saw, where Obi-Wan was able to get through to Anakin is great! 	Marvelous Brodie. I loved that you saved him. I know that wouldn't have worked in the movies, since it would kind of ruin the whole Original Trilogy thing. But here, it was nice to see an alternate ending to his fall. Stepping forward, into Obi-Wan, Anakin released his wrist and embraced him. His hug was tight, and, at first Obi-Wan was unsure how to respond. His entire speech of family and the Force seemed words that were not his own. He was talking of Anakin being his son, yet when Anakin hugged him, he couldn't respond for a moment. 	Oh, that was gorgeous! I LOVE fics about Mustafar and this one was utterly delightful! The emotions were raw and stark - very appropriate, given everything that had transpired. The closing lines left me with tears in my eyes. It's so cool when that happens! It shows how invested I got in the viggie. Clearly, this one sucked me right in and never let go, not even for an instant. Beautiful! Stellar work, brodie! That was a wicked slap to Vader’s face… brilliant line there! I love these little insights on Mustafar- they didn’t happen but were so vividly written that I can easily see them! The end was powerfully touching with them embracing! I’m off to have another look at your poem! 	Thank you all for reading this fic. Sometimes these things just come over me and have to be done. I know that not long ago writing a Mustafar scene was the farthest thing from my mind. In the film there was so much wrong with it. I never imagined writing an Anakin/Obi-Wan reconciliation either. I'm glad that it was so well received. Jturtle: Thanks for reading, Jturtle. It is an awesome song. I’m glad Anakin was credible in his inner battle. VaderLVR64: Thanks Vader. We all know Anakin was deceived, but, here, Obi-Wan is able to help him see it. Noelie: Thank you, Noelie. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I wanted it to be real. I wanted Anakin to recognize his actions. amidalachick: Thank you, Amaidala. I appreciate that you found it engaging and emotionally dramatic. With these two, I wanted it to be raw and real. Lola64: I’m really pleased that you liked this, Dawn. Considering your PT aversion, that means a lot. You hit the nail on the head in your final comments. Obi-Wan desperately wanted to save Anakin, and so doing gave himself over to the inspiration if the Force. For me, it was a God moment that Obi-Wan had. bek: thank you, bek. I believe you are right. Obi-Wan needed to say the words as much as he needed to hear them. I’m glad you enjoyed the ending as well. KELIA: thank you, Kelia. 	Very well done indeed, you show their intensity so well and it comes through quite clearly. I think this would be an excellent fic to continue with, it would most definitely be an interesting ride. Great job and you should be proud of yourself for this work.
