Title: Don't Go
Author: little_miss_jedi
Genre: songfic. Please don't run off screaming. Give it a try
Summary: Amidala surveying the wreckage after the Battle of Theed, runs into Obi-Wan. I wrote a similiar songfic a long time ago but I don't know where it went...but this one is better!
---
As you’re disappearing I’m hearing, all I wanted you to say,
I should focus more on the thought of letting you just slip away…
When she was three, Amidala’s great aunt had died. With this, her mother had inherited a priceless vase. She had placed it on the mantle and warned Amidala…then Padmé, of course…and her sister that breaking that vase or defacing it in any way was a crime tantamount to mass murder.
Little Padmé had tried, really, truly tried not to touch the vase. But it was so beautiful. It was made of a special glass that changed colour as the sun caught it in different places with different levels of intensity. She would sit there for hours watching the colours shift and fade into one another perfectly, her brown eyes filled with the wonder only a three-year-old could possess.
On an overcast day, Padmé went to look at the vase. The sunlight was not catching it and it remained a dull black. She could see sunlight filtering in through the far window, so somehow picking up the vase with fingers that were already slippery from helping with the dishes, and carrying it over to that sun shaft made perfect sense.
She kept her eyes fixed on the sunshine as she walked, certain that if she blinked, she would lose the sun. She was not concentrating on the vase. It fell and shattered.
So before you disappear again, just think of what you’re feeling and don’t go.
There’s more to what you’re telling me, I’m not buying what you’re selling me…
Little Padmé was gone now, and Amidala stood in her place. But the same thing had happened. Amidala had been focused on the bigger picture, too focused on the whole planet to worry about the little things…like each individual person, each flower, each building, each paving stone in the Market Square. She had made the mistakes of Padmé. Amidala was not supposed to make mistakes.
Don’t go.
Everywhere she looked, she could see shattered shards of her metaphorical vase. People hunched over bodies that were too still, searching for a sign of life with a desperate, wild expression. One woman in particular was on her knees before a dead man. The woman had cuts and slashes and dried blood caking her skin, face and hair. Her clothes were torn and the makeshift bandage around her arm was dripping with scarlet liquid. She didn’t seem to notice any of this – Amidala knew that all those woman’s eyes would see was that dead man before her, lying there with a frozen, twisted expression, his unseeing eyes still wide, his mouth open with a silent scream. This man had died scared, and as the woman’s bloodstained fingers intertwined with the man’s clammy, white, cold fingers the woman began to rock back and forth on her haunches, murmuring the same words over and over so quietly Amidala knew she was not meant to hear them. ‘Don’t go…don’t go…don’t go…don’t go…’
Across the square, near the Theed Memorial Fountain, two young children were tending to a man Amidala imagined was their father. The man’s face was pale and shiny with sweat. His expression was haggard and drawn with pain, his fists clenched tightly, bracing himself as the children dragged him over to the fountain so he could have something to lean against. The children tended to the man with gentle hands that did not know what to do. They were making it up as they went along. Amidala could see the determination, the concentration in the eyes of these children, who had been forced to grow up too much, too soon. She looked back at the man. He had no legs any more. In the place of his legs there were bloody, raw stumps. Blood and clear liquid oozed onto the concrete around him. The children saw this. The children did not know what to do.
‘Go home,’ the father managed to whisper to the children. ‘Leave me. Go home, where it’s safe.’
‘There is no home any more, Daddy,’ one child said. ‘It got destroyed like everything else. It’s all gone.’
It’s all gone.
And I get this strange feeling that you’re not revealing everything you wanted to say.
I should focus more on the thought of letting you just slip away…
‘You mustn’t blame yourself, Your Highness,’ said a quiet voice behind her. Amidala did not turn. Instead, she moved to walk away as if she hadn’t heard anyone.
The voice, male and young, chuckled softly. ‘I know it’s you.’
Amidala turned around then, lowering the veil on her flame-red Handmaiden garb to survey the Jedi behind her. She knew his name was Obi-Wan Kenobi, that he was a Jedi apprentice…and that his Master had been one of the many fatalities. His head was tilted slightly to look at her. There were dark shadows under his eyes and his shoulders were hunched. He had not changed since they had been separated in the palace, when he and his Master had left to fight the red-and-black, horned man. His white Jedi robes were burnt and coloured with sweat, ripped and torn. He didn’t seem to be injured… but Amidala could not see beyond the physical. It did not take a scholar to realise that inside, past the cool exterior that all Jedi had, his heart had broken into as many pieces as little Padme’s vase.
‘Captain Panaka told me of your loss,’ Amidala told him. Her usual lofty and majestic voice was reserved only for when she was acting as Queen. Now, she was a handmaiden, and handmaidens were allowed to feel and smile and sympathise and scream and cry when it all got too much. ‘Allow me to offer my condolences.’ Still, it was hard to slip out of that formal way of wording everything, making everything sound like something out of a Shakespearian play. It made her sound cool, impersonal. It was how she was meant to come across…whether she wanted it or not.
Obi-Wan Kenobi shook his head slowly, folding his arms across his chest almost as if to hug himself. ‘Qui-Gon always said you needed to lighten up.’
Don’t you realise that I’m stranded, in a feeling I can’t shake…
‘It is hard to be light in a time like this,’ Amidala told him a little stiffly, reeling at the jibe despite herself. Obi-Wan nodded. ‘Granted, Your Highness.’ He glanced around, taking it all in. His blue eyes skirted over the legless man, now holding each of his children as he waited patiently for death. He noticed the scarred woman, still rocking back and forth, tears now streaming down her weathered face in a kind of sadness Amidala would never be able to understand. He saw every cracked paving stone, every collapsed building, every trodden-on flower, every single shard of dull black glass. ‘I have seen all of this before…’
‘Does it get easier?’ she asked suddenly, wondering desperately if she would ever get over this irrepressible guilt. Would she ever be able to face anybody as Queen Amidala again, after what she had put them through?
‘A little,’ Obi-Wan conceded readily. ‘Because once you get over direct aftermath…you realise something.’
‘Realise what?’
A small albeit reluctant smile tugs at his worn, tanned features. ‘Things heal.’
‘Even this?’ Amidala extended a hand to encompass the entire square. Obi-Wan nodded once. ‘Even this,’ he confirmed. ‘It just takes time. You just have to wait for the sun to come out.’
Don’t you realise that I’m frightened of all the things you’re gonna take…
The sun. Of course. Even on broken shards, the sun would still cause the colour to change. Just because it was broken did not make it obsolete. The knowledge of this caused relief to sweep through her, giving her the courage to hold herself just a little straighter, hold her head a little higher. She looked straight into Obi-Wan’s eyes and saw the sadness there. ‘You will heal, too,’ she said to him.
He sighed. ‘Eventually. Maybe. Not for a long time, I know.’
‘When I was young, my mother had a vase,’ Amidala began hesitantly. He looked at her inquiringly and she went on. ‘It was beautiful. Truly, truly beautiful. But I dropped it, and it shattered.’
‘I’m sorry.’
‘It’s all right.’ Amidala almost smiled. ‘That’s the thing. My whole family worked together…and we glued all the pieces back into place. We fixed it. The vase is still there on the mantle. Together.’
‘Perhaps the same thing will happen here.’
And now you seem so distant, so much more resistant, to ever let the feeling show…
Her gaze was unblinking. ‘Perhaps the same thing will happen to you.’
So it’s hard for me to face it,
Even less replace it…
He smiled again, a lot more willingly. ‘Perhaps. We can hope, can’t we?’
‘We can.’
Everything you’re letting go.

That was so bittersweet.
The beginning was brutal but I agree with Obi-Wan, you can hope for healing.
You have to.
Great job on this

I
love
this!
You integrated the story of the vase perfectly with all that Amidala saw after the battle of Theed.
Even on broken shards, the sun would still cause the colour to change. Just because it was broken did not make it obsolete. The knowledge of this caused relief to sweep through her, giving her the courage to hold herself just a little straighter, hold her head a little higher.
Beautiful. I hope that Obi-Wan and Amidala did get a chance to talk like this.
This was so incredible.

Yet the sad part about it is that even as adults, we make mistakes. She was still so young and had so much placed upon her shoulders. That was a heavy burden for her to bear, thinking she was somehow to blame.
Loved the note of hope at the end.
Lovely fic!

thankyou! ...there doesn't seem to be much interaction between Obi-Wan and Amidala, does there? they were really able to relate with each other at a time like this...
Gina:
thankyou for the kind words! I really tried to show Amidala as a girl rather than a queen so her innocence could shine through...

Wow, just wow. That beginning section was brutal.

Loved it. I'd like to think that Obi-Wan had a moment like this with Padme. This was a very well written fic.

It is nice that you wrote them having a private conversation
Obi-Wan and Padme could see the pain and torment that wars bring.
Hoping that in time it would heal their hearts.
Beautiful well done

Then again, I'm in a wholly different time zone to most of you guys, so posting a message at 3am your time probably wasn't the best "up" I could have given...
