Title:
Snow Day
Author:
Jaya Solo
Timeframe:
Before ESB
Characters:
Luke, Leia, and Han
Genre:
Vignette, fun
Summary:
Luke discovers snow and ends up getting his friends to relax and have fun too.
Note:
This is written for all of those that are like Luke, and are puzzled when this weird, cold substance falls from the sky.
Luke stared across the vast expanse of brightness. The mounds rose and fell all around him. The light coming off of the surface of the mounds almost blinded him. He felt like he was at home, but yet, instead of blaring heat, this planet put off staggering cold. But the cold barely registered with Luke as his curiosity got the better of him.
Crunch,
the ground sounded when he stepped on it. He studied where his foot went, wondering how this substance was different from sand. His foot still sank, but this cold substance simply compacted rather than gathering around his boot.
Crunch crunch.
He took another step, and then another. Looking back over his footprints he discovered that his footprint did not disappear into the substance around it. Luke then quickly took several more steps and then looked back to see what would happen. On this planet there was no heavy wind to erase his footprints, here they stayed in place.
“Luke!” a staccato female voice called out somewhere near base.
“Over here, Leia!” Luke called back.
A huffing, rosy cheeked, very angry looking Leia stomped across his carefully placed footprints as she stormed her way toward him. “What are you thinking! It's freezing out here, and you're not used to the cold. You could die out here. Come inside before you catch your death of cold!”
“I don't notice the cold,” Luke remarked.
“That's the first sign! We've got to get you inside now,” Leia insisted.
“I'm fine. I was just exploring,” Luke admitted.
“Exploring what? It's just snow,” Leia said, clearly exasperated.
“Watch,” Luke said before taking a step in the snow. “See, it leaves a mark in the snow. There's nothing like this from where I'm from.”
Leia pursed her lips. “You've never seen snow before, have you?”
Luke shook his head.
“It's not safe to play on this planet, Luke. I'll show you what real snow is like during the winter on a normal planet. It falls softly from the sky and coats everything, even your house, in the powdery substance. The palace was always gorgeous when it snowed... but I can't show you that now.”
Luke gently squeezed her arm. “It sounds lovely. Maybe we'll find a planet where we can see it again some day without freezing our rears off.”
“That gives me an idea!” Leia exclaimed. “My aunts wound never let me do this when I was a kid. They said it wasn't 'lady-like.'”
Without any warning, Leia plopped down in the snow on her back and began moving her arms and legs back and forth against the snow. Luke stared at her in disbelief. He worried she had lost her mind.
“Help me up!” Leia ordered. “Look at the snow,” Leia instructed after she saw the very puzzled look on Luke's face. “See, it looks like an angel.”
“What's an angel?” Luke asked, continuing his puzzled look.
Leia's face mimicked Luke's as she thought. “I have no idea. That's what I had always heard they looked like.”
“Well, it looks like fun,” Luke said before plopping down himself and making a fool of himself as he waved his arms and legs back and forth.
Leia helped Luke up and they both stared at their creations.
“Oh! There's one other thing I loved to do when we had snow.” Leia bent down and started rolling the snow around.
“Are you going to hit me with that?” Luke asked, growing slightly worried.
“No, we're making a snowman.”
“Oh. Can I help?”
“Sure, start rolling a ball of snow and it can be the middle.”
After a few minutes, Leia looked over at Luke and shook her head. “You're doing it all wrong,” she said as he continued to pack snow together by hand. “You roll it like this.”
“Oh. It's much faster that way.”
Leia rolled her eyes. “Of course it is. It's like you've never played with snow or something.”
They both laughed in response.
After a few minutes of rolling, they finally constructed their snowman. As they stood there marveling at the sight, an angry voice flooded their ears.
“Where in the Maw do you get off playing in the snow! It's too cold to do that, and you'll lead the Imps right to us with those eyesores!”
“Oh lay off it, Han. Luke's never seen snow, and I was showing him how to properly play in it,” Leia snidely told him.
“That's great, Princess, until we all die because you made a crummy snowman and two imprints of yourself along with footprints that lead you straight to the base. We're lying low here, remember?”
As Han continued to rant and rave, Luke reached down and picked up some snow. As he held it in his hand, he got a great idea. He compacted it into a ball and then lobbed the ball at Han's head.
“Ow!” Han exclaimed as the snowball hit his head. “Kid, what do you think you're doing!”
“Having fun,” Luke said before throwing another and another snowball at Han. Leia then took up the act and threw snowballs at Han too.
“Hey, cut it out you two!” Han yelled as he used his arms to try to shield himself. “This is not funny. you're acting like kids!”
“You're just whining because we're winning,” Luke remarked smugly.
“I'll show you who's better,” Han said before taking shelter behind a hill and making up his own snowballs. He never got the chance to throw them because Luke and Leia ran over the hill throwing their snowballs at him.
After a few minutes of chaos, the three Rebels laid piled in a wet heap together, laughing loudly. It seemed that even heroes of the galaxy needed a snow day to play, relax, and remember exactly why they were fighting this war.

Cute, Jaya! I love snow!
I never did think about it before, but Luke
must
have been puzzled when he first went to Hoth and saw all that lovely snow.

Brilliant. I love Luke's reaction to the snow, and Leia's unthinking 'it's like you've never played with snow before'
And Han was perfectly in character, great little viggie

I love it! And am totally like Luke when it comes to that cold icy stuff!
...What? I live in
Australia
. And Adelaide (where I go to Uni) has just broken the record for the longest heat wave in a Australian capital city - 10 days over 35 degrees celsius. The closest I've come to snow was the small, old, compacted patch i saw in year 11 when we climbed Mt. Kosicosco (highest point in Aus).
...I wish ther was snow here...
Heh, like how Leia and Han both start by telling him off, then get roped into it!
Great work, Jaya!

Yeah, good luck with that
I loved the snowball fight. What a perfect way to lighten the mood.
Great job on this
