Welcome!

This thread is designed to provide people with all the facts and information about the OT DVDs.

Topics up for discussion here include :

* The DVD transfer and process
* The availability and prices for the DVD set
* Information about any DVD extras, commentaries, documentaries, etc
* Information about any changes and rumoured changes
* DVD screencaps - not too many per page, as a courtesy to users with slower modems
* Links to reviews of the new DVD set

This thread is not intended to be used for :

* Actual discussion about any changes, rumoured changes, or reviews
* Comments about the wider Saga as a result of the DVD changes
* General talk about whether to buy or not

Any posts along these lines will just be edited out. This should mean that anyone can visit this thread and easily find out what's on the DVD without having to wade through discussion posts.

Please also remember to keep to the TOS at all times. Spoilers will NOT be allowed in any way, shape, or form here...they are simply not needed in an informative thread such as this one.

One last thing...rumours are fine...but bear in mind that until the DVDs are actually released, we can't rely on any information completely. There's still the possibility, especially given Lucasfilm's track record on this, that changes could be going on practically up to the last week or so before release. So pinches of salt may be advised wink

DaMovieMan has a website where he keeps track of the DVD details as well, along with accompanying pictures. Thanks to him for collecting the information here, you can visit his website by clicking HERE.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

---LIST OF DVD CHANGES---

A NEW HOPE

- Obi-Wan's howl to scare away the Tuskens is higher pitched for some reason.
- Better blue glow around Luke's lightsabre blade.
- The shot as Luke's speeder flies into Mos Espa has been redone, with a better effect and Threepio moving rather than standing stock still.
- Rather than Greedo just missing, now Han moves slightly aside to avoid the shot. They shoot at almost the same time.
- An improved version of Jabba has been inserted into his scenes. It's more like the TPM version. He also reacts in a different, more realistic way to having his tail trodden on.
- The matte-painted Death Star hall in the detention block has been fixed rather than just having a bright white light at one end.
- The Dianoga eye has been re-done in CGI rather than a stop-motion puppet. The stalk is the same, but the eye now blinks and looks more real.
- The lettering on the Death Star 'power' and 'tractor beam' panels are now written in Aurebesh rather than English.
- Blue glow added to Obi-Wan's lightsabre when it 'fizzles out' near the end of his first duel sequence against Vader. It's not a total redo, but makes it look a bit better.
- Vader's white sabre, seen through the doors when Luke is blasting the storm troopers, has been correctly coloured red.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

- Ian McDiarmid is now in place for Emperor Palpatine's scene, rather than the monkey-eyed old woman. There are also a couple of new lines in this scene (see below).
- Boba Fett's voice redubbed by Temura Morrison (Jango Fett).
- Han's black jacket has been digitally erased, to eliminate an old blooper where it suddenly appears when he's placed in the carbon freezing area.
- Luke's wail when he falls off the Cloud City platform is gone dancing

RETURN OF THE JEDI

- The Rancor's matte-lines have been removed.
- In Vader's death scene, Shaw's eyes have been recoloured blue (to match Hayden's) and his eyebrows removed (as they would never have survived his warm bath).
- Naboo now appears in the end celebration sequence.
- The Senate and Jedi Temple buildings now appear in the Coruscant end celebration sequence.
- Hayden Christensen appears at the end of the film in place of Sebastian Shaw as 'Ghost Anakin'.

MISC INFO

Audio Quality
- "I spoke with Ben Burtt recently. He mentioned the upcoming Star Wars DVDs. It seems that they were able to go back and digitize all of the original tracks and rebuild the show from scratch. For the previous Theatrical Special Editions they were only able to go back and re-mix and edit from the pre-mixes which were sonically limited by the analogue recording and reproduction systems of the time. Since Ben was responsible for archiving all of the sound on A New Hope, all of the sounds were able to be found except for a couple of foley tracks which I'm assuming will be re-done. So it seems that we will be hearing Star Wars in a way we've never heard it before. He did not mention if Empire and Jedi would be receiving the same treatment."

Picture Quality
- A huge amount of frame by frame restoration and clean up, along with fixing of all matte-lines and background elements. The colours are drastically improved due to this, appearing much more vibrant and making the films look like they were shot a lot more recently.

- Quotes from Lowry Digital Images :
“There were sandstorms of dirt on the film,” says John Lowry, CEO and founder of the Burbank, California-based company. “In the desert scenes alone, we probably removed more than a million pieces of dirt. That means each frame literally had hundreds of pieces of dirt.”

In many ways, the films of the
Star Wars Trilogy were victims of their own success.
“Generally, the more successful a film, the worse condition it’s in. When a movie starts out, there are some expectations for what’s going to happen with it, how many times prints will need to be made and so forth, then the studio makes a certain number of protection masters for printing. But if they go through them all, they have to go back to the negatives again because the protection masters are just plain worn out. Of course, every time you go back to the originals, you’re beating them up again. So, the big movies, the really successful ones, are usually pretty rough.”

“The dirt was the biggest single challenge. It was just incredible,” he says. “We use automated systems here, which can remove hundreds of pieces of dirt in a scene, but in this case the automated systems just couldn’t cope.” Last year, Lowry Digital Images performed a digital restoration of the three Indiana Jones films, each of which had about 100,000 pieces of dirt. “In the
Star Wars films, we removed up to one million pieces of dirt in a single scene.”

Prior to the event of digital technology, colour timing was a hit-or-miss proposition done in a laboratory setting.
“It was really hard to get right,” Blanchard (Lucasfilm Post-Production Supervisor) says. “But in the digital environment, there’s a lot more control. You have the ability to fine-tune things exactly the way you want them to be and bring out subtleties in the film you couldn’t get by the traditional method of colour timing. On the
Star Wars Trilogy, we were able to retime the movie to make it look the way George originally wanted it to be.”

Simply put, Lowry says the Trilogy was the most difficult project his company has ever had.
“We’ve cleaned up more dirt on these three movies than we have on any movie we’ve ever worked on, including
Citizen Kane – and that was almost impossible,” he says, trying to give some idea of the challenges his technicians faced. “The end result? These films are absolutely stunning.”

TRANSCRIPT OF ESB EMPEROR SCENE

Due to the question coming up dozens of times in the last days, here is the transcript of the new Emperor Hologram Scene in ESB. New dialogue is in bold.

Vader: "What is thy bidding, my master."
Palpatine: "There is a great disturbance in the Force."
Vader: "I have felt it."
Palpatine: "We have a new enemy. The young Rebel who destroyed the Death Star. And I have no doubt that this boy is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker."
Vader: "How is that possible?"
Palpatine: "Search your feelings, Lord Vader. You will know it to be true.
He could destroy us."
Vader: "He's just a boy. Obi-Wan can no longer help him."
Palpatine: "The Force is strong with him. The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi."
Vader: "If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally."
Palpatine: "Yes. Yes. He would be a great asset. Can it be done."
Vader: "He will join us or die, my master."

What a long ride that thread's been. Oh well.

Anyway, the things I'm looking forward to the most are the commentaries (besides the actual films, of course).

Ummm I've seen several screencaps of the newer Jabba and the Aurebesh on the Tractor beam panels, so those are NOT rumors any longer, they are confirmed as much as the above confirmed changes.

I'm not so sure about some of the things that are listed as rumoured. We have more evidence of redone Jabba, redubbed Boba Fett, and the Jedi Temple than we do of the binary sunset clouds, but that is listed as confirmed and these are listed as rumoured.

We just stole someone's compiled list. In a week or two this could all be terribly outdated anyway. We don't claim it's 100% accurate. Because nothing is 100% accurate at the moment.

To be honest, virtually everything should be regarded as unconfirmed until the DVDs are actually out...but there's no problem shuffling some stuff around. That's partly the point of the thread.

Also during the End Celebration in addition to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, the Senate can also be seen.

My suggested subtitle for this thread was "Technical Readouts (of That Battlestation)", alas, it was rejected...

I've seen a screencap from the documentary of the original Star Wars title crawl. Anyone know if it's shown completely? Or is it just a few fleeting seconds?

"So it seems that we will be hearing Star Wars in a way we've never heard it before. He did not mention if Empire and Jedi would be receiving the same treatment."

Well, Jedi's soundtrack wouldn't need as much work since it has always been a digital master (being the first THX film ever released). In that sense the leaked ROTJ "DVD rip" is unrevealing because Jedi simply wouldn't have needed as much audio reworking as the other two to get it up to today's standards.

Jedi has always sounded better than the other two and it may be this DVD release will turn the tables on that. The high quality (even as mp3s) of the two snippets of audio from Empire that've been leaked suggest we are in for a sonic treat.

Great thread, and great updates DamonD.
In the huge thread it was becoming confusing just to find what official changes are being made.
Amazing, this year I'm not dreading September as much as usual.

Thanks
