Han Solo: Hero or Sidekick?
|
This is my first post here so please be gentle! Anyway, I've seen some people talk about how Han is a sidekick in the movies, but everything I've found on the subject of Campbell's Hero's journey talk about Han being a hero/anti-hero. Also, since GL very well aware of archtypes (which he used a lot in SW), he should have known that Han was in the anti-hero mold.
So I'm confused. Has GL made a comment on this? Does anyone know anything?
Thanks.

I categorize Han as a hero. If you want a sidekick, that's what Chewie, the droids and Jar Jar are for. Like many of the characters in the OT, Han goes on his own hero's journey and develops throughout the course of the story. Much of this is explained in detail in the "Magic of Myth" book. It talks specifically about Han's hero journey as well as the anti-hero concept which you have already mentioned.
I forget what it was in(it might have been the "Annotated Screenplays", but I need to look it up), but Lucas himself comments about Han being the anti-hero, etc.

I've always thought of Han Solo as a hero. Of course I'm not too familiar with the books so I'm basing my opinion on the trilogies- 4, 5 and 6.

IMO, Han is both. He is a hero in his own right- he helps rescue Leia, he blows up Imperial fighters, he gets Vader out of the way so that Luke can blow up the Death Star, he rescues Luke, he helps win the Battle of Endor. However, because he is not the main hero of the story, he is like a sidekick to Luke. He's still a cool hero though, IMO.

HanSolo29: I agree. I think Han’s a hero, even before I read what I found. Sadly, I don’t have Magic of Myth.
I don’t think it’s in the Annotated Screenplays because I’ve got it and I didn’t see anything.

Hmm...then I guess I have to do some searching. That's gonna bug me now that you brought it up.

Good first post JediStarMoonstuck!!!!
I've always viewed Han as a hero. To me, he's the "tough guy with a big heart" type of hero. I actually USED to try to act like him when I was a teenager, tough yet suave, reckless yet caring. I used to joke around alot like him, too. (Oh wait, I still do that! Oh well...).

Han was a hero but it's just that Luke is the hero.

Han Solo is a sidekick.
He is representational of a certain way of looking at the world....
I think this way is best exemplified in ANH....
I think Han Solo reminds me of a character from the Phantom Menace the most.

Okay, I'm confused. How does that make him a sidekick?
I think Han Solo reminds me of a character from the Phantom Menace the most.
And this, even moreso than your response above. I didn't see any character in the TPM that is even remotely close to Han's personality. To some, this is what they think is missing from the PT - a Han-type character. Who reminded you of him? I'm curious...

Hero or sidekick? Wow, that doesnt sound like a bash attempt at all.
Han is a hero. And for those who wernt sure, George even made him almost shoot at the same time with Greedo so we wouldnt think he was a murderer.
