In ROTJ, we see Vader igniting & wielding Lukes green saber, telling him " I see you have constructed a new lightsaber" . I noticed how he was checking out the detail work on the saber hilt, for he seemed to be very impressed. Your skills are complete, blade is extinguised, Indeed you are powerful as the Emperor has forseen. Do you think Vader wanted to keep Lukes saber for his own purposes. I can see Vader igniting both sabers, trying to decide on wether he should keep his red one or pass it on to luke. I believe Vader may have been tempted to use Lukes lightsaber, but had to stick to the sith code with his red saber.

Yeah, I think he was quite impressed with the overall quality of Luke's weapon, although IMO Vader's weapon is perhaps the best combat design ever for a lightsabre..

I agree with Boba. Lord Vader was very impressed, but jealous of it, per se? No, not at all.

Vader may have been impressed because Luke's lightsaber is similar to Obi-Wan's Episode III-IV Jedi Council saber but even more streamlined. Vader may see it as a sign that at least some of Luke's skills have equalled or surpassed Obi-Wan's.
Vader might be a little jealous because Obi-Wan's lightsaber designs evolved radically with Obi-Wan's increasing craftsmanship and insight, while Vader's three known sabers all have a pretty similar design. Maybe Vader figured out the perfect saber design as a Padawan, or maybe he got stuck in a rut. I tend to think the latter.

A lightsaber is a lightsaber. Vader knew how to build his own.
When the commander gave Vader Luke's lightsaber to begin with, Vader wasn't overly excited. When he flashed it on in front of Luke he's just admiring his son's work. That's it.

I agree, Vader was admiring his son's work.
I think he was impressed but I don't think he'd build one of that style of his own.

I have to agree with Destiny. I think Luke was just admiring his son's work and was impressed that Luke could build a saber like Obi-Wan's but more streamlined without the resources or training of the Old Jedi Order

What makes one sabre design superior to another?
Darth Boba,
Why do you consider Vader's desgin the pinnacle?

Oy! I’m not trying to be a jerk, but this has to be one the silliest ideas I’ve ever read on these boards and I’ve seen some doozies! It’s like asking: “Do you think Vader wanted to hug Luke when he saw him again on Endor?” It’s just too out of character for him and furthermore, it makes to sense for him to want to use Luke’s Saber. At that point Vader is still a Sith Lord. Maybe after he turns back to the good side (if he did not die) he would switch sabers but not before.
I think the reasons for that scene are simple:
1. Vader ignites Luke’s saber to see his reaction. He wants to see how well Luke can control his fear even when unarmed.
2. The line “I see you have constructed a new lightsaber” is also to explain to the audience where Luke got the new lightsaber after losing his first one at Cloud City.
3. When examining Luke’s lightsaber, maybe Vader noticed the similarity to Obi-Wan’s ROTS lightsaber.
I don’t think that the simple fact that Luke built his own lightsaber indicates that he is a full Jedi Knight because padawans have to build their own too and they are far from full Jedi Knights.

He turned it on to see if it was blue. When he saw it wasn't, he knew there was a chance he would lose if he dueled Luke

Why do you think that Vaders is the best design ever?
Dooku's was more slick

As for why I consider Vader's design to be the pinnacle of combat-lightsabre design..
1. Unlike other slide-box activated designs, it's fully ambidextrous-the activator can be reached with either thumb.
2. The secondary d-ring mounted on the front end. This allows the sabre to be worn emitter facing upwards, which allows for a very fast block or strike from the belt. (Watch Vader when Luke draws his weapon on the Emperor. Vader 'draws' his sabre as Luke's is coming down at Palpatine, and he still blocks him.
3. The additional grip fins-8 instead of 6 on Anakin's ROTS/Luke's ANH sabre. Makes it a hair easier to keep your hands on the sabre during a clench or the one-handed disarms Vader likes to do-those probably generate alot of torque, it'd not be a suprise if Vader lost his sabre too while executing them. The 8 grip-fins probably help with this.
4. The guard on the front end. It serves the same purpose as the one on Dooku's sabre, yet doesn't render a larger porition of the blade useless as Dooku's does, and the odds of it catching on clothing while being drawn are nil, while Dooku's (however unlikely) may.
5. Totally non-reflective, unlike the shiny steel of Maul's, Dooku's, etc. weapons. Sunlight glinting off combat equipment is bad.
And those're my reasons why Vader's sabre owns all others.
