I just bought the boxed set of the trilogy. I was pretty excited but the cgi looked bogus. I had not seen the new redone version (i have only had my old vhs set). What's the deal some of the remastered and new cgi things were pretty cool but I thought most of it just looked out of place. Is it just me or are puppets way better than animation?

for some reason i guess that i just prefer the originals. I hate to say that the animation looks fake, especially when comparing them to the puppets, but i do like them better. Some of the shots in ROTJ just look out of place. Like at Jabba's palace with that alien thing singing. I seem to remember liking it when the puppet was singing better. Maybe its just because they didn't include any crazy shots where they zoom the camera right up to the mouth.
Any thoughts?

*shrug* Both puppets and animation of living things look fake to me. I've just tried to live with it either way. I enjoy the OT better if I don't get worked up about it. I don't like CGI creatures, but on the other hand, I'd much rather have a really nice, new-looking picture. I own both versions so it just depends on my mood when I decide which to watch.

Overall, I prefer the originals. The major, computer-generated changes stand out quite a bit, and most don't impress me. Giving credit where it's due, however, I have to say I do like the parts where matte lines have been removed. Most noticeably around the rancor. But I also like the fact that was all they changed: they didn't put in a computer generated rancor, or otherwise alter the scene.

I too prefer the original version. I don't mind the animations in themselves, it's just that the mix between puppets and animation makes them more obvious.
Also, I think a few extended or added scenes disturb the pacing of the movies, especially the added Vader's shuttle leaving Bespin-sequence and the "improved" music scene in Jabba's palace.
Still I watch the DVD edition because the sound and image quality is so much better than on my old VHS copies.

RE: Is the redone trilogy better then the original?
i orginally grew up with the non speical editions and loved them..then the special editions came out and i still like them and even perfer them more i liked the cleaned up look alot more i think star wars was alot more deserveing of it alot of people complain about the small musical number in return of the jedi i honestly enjoyed it ..it was always intended to be there and a really butchered version was in the non speical editions puppet Sy Snootles looked horrid now she really came to live dureing the small duet with the DVD release about the only thing i can really complain about is the changeing of boba's voice..i mean dont get me wrong it makes sense his voice would sound like jango's the clone troopers and such but i just always got attachted to the old boba voice '' Put capitan solo in the cargo hold'' just sounds a bit alien to me with Temuera Morrison however oddly i love his voice for jango and the clone troopers..i suppose it will just have to grow on me .so long story short i love the changes and the cleaned up versions

The animations are fake in the new special editions. I had rented all the movies to see what I thought about them after a few years, and it's nothing like I remember. It was better back then. Besides that, the originals are always the best.

I like the OT and the OT:SE. I like the OT becasue it was what I first watched. I like the OT:SE becasue it let me see the OT on the big screen for the first time after years of seeing it on the small screen.

I have heard that the OT theme was a used universe. But in episodes I, II, and III everything looks brand new. I guess i just like things looking used and lived in. It make for a more believable galaxy. Why didn't they do that for the first three episodes? or maybe they did, i might just be missing it.

My name is Shake-Zula, the mic rulah, schoolah, you wanna trip, I'll break it to ya.
PROPER LYRICS:
"My name is....Shake-Zula...the mike rula...the old schoola...you wanna trip...I'll bring it to ya..."
Sorry...had to get that out of the way...
Ok...as for the topic...
WARNING: INFORMED OPINION THAT YOU MAY NOT WANT TO READ
In my book...the OT DVD set was a complete slap in the face to all the old school fans who made Lucas the rich bastard he is today.
All this "But Lucas financed the movies himself....he never needed anyone...its HIS vision...blah blah.." talk burns me up.
Sure...the movies belong to him...but only one thing made Star Wars the success it is....people plunking down their cash to buy tickets.
Now...he thinks the OT was "half-finished"...good for him. He wants to make changes? Go for it. If he wants to digitally remove Darth Vader and insert Bill Gates...he's more than welcome to do so.
But...as a gesture to his ORIGINAL fans. The ones who made him the cinematic demi-god he is today...he should have included the non-SE versions in his DVD set.
But, thats just one person's opinion.

RE: Is the redone trilogy better then the original?
I don't feel the changes have improved the films in anyway, but nor have they degraded the quality, to me, they're still the same films, I think the CGI looks out of place alot of the time, but I just ignore it.
What does bother me is how some changes that should be made haven't, such as Luke's Lightsaber in A New Hope. The only change that does bother me, is Greedo shooting first, and that's because it's done so poorly.
