oh Sam, der, im not htinking tonight... maybe he means that Mace dies alone in hidiing, or maybe hes lying, like Lucas did about the title of RotJ, and so many other times.

Mace could be aboard a spaceship that gets destroyed. Maybe by Vader. Or would that qualify as "going out like a punk..."?

Here's another non-violent one, what if Mace's death is connected to Yoda and Ben's ability to appear to Luke after death. Maybe Mace and many of the remaining Jedi sense that fighting the Empire is hopeless and choose to perform some kind of ritual sacrifice, becoming one with the force and allowing their energy to be absorbed by whoever is left behind. So in the end letting the dark side win ends up being a calculated risk on their part, as they realize Anakin will eventually turn on Palpatine, they choose for Yoda and Ben to remain behind to make sure everything goes to plan.
