I don't have the scenes yet, haven't written them. I was hoping for a little clarification on how far is too far before I went down any dark paths never to return.
Um... see I have a drug that will be actually used to see into the future by enhancing a force sensitive's powers, and this is definitely a part of the plot, so I think showing him doing it is probably going to be very necessary. The way I'm thinking of having him do the drug is different than any Earth drug I know of (via drops in the eyes), so I dont think that showing him do it would be a problem. And it's defintely not glamourized, humourous or anything like that, I've actually mentioned already that another character had died young because of her death stick addiction. So, does showing that sound like that's not going too far? Or can I not show it at all?

- From your description of what you are wanting to write, it sounds fine since you are not making light of it or glamorizing it.

Anyone else unnerved by the evil Padme on the main forum banner?
Right, right, the topic... One thing that's still a tad unclear to me in the "violence" arena is combat. Most of the discussion concerning violence has been about torture and the like. LotR and Jango's decapitation have been mentioned, but how many fight scenes is too many, and how much can happen in a single action sequence (both in terms of "how long" and of "how graphic") before it's too much?
Matt Stover's stuff (
Shatterpoint
and
Traitor
) is obviously the absolute limit of what should be in SW, and I'm pretty sure TF.N's policy excludes Stover-esque action from the boards, which is of course understandable.
I haven't personally written a fic here yet but I've entertained the idea, and most of what I [try to] write is action-centric. A lot of written combat I've seen isn't actually particularly descriptive beyond talking about slashing and blocking; admittedly it would get tedious to label every right hook and left uppercut (unless you're David Gemmell). So I guess it's hard to find a good benchmark in existing, written SW fiction. But has this ever been an issue here on the boards?
Picking from the list of suggestions and still in the same vein, I think it might be interesting to delve into the mind of a murderer. Would you try to make him/her/it a sympathetic character? A sociopath?

Upping this per Breezy's suggestion in "Give Booze a Chance."
And how appropriate, since the title says "Druggggs."
Don't know if this thread already covered it, but is there a legal age for drinking in the GFFA? Because in the NJO, Jaina was downing the homemade stuff with Jag and Kyp, and she was about 18 or so. Of course, that was also when her parents weren't around, and it wasn't really a situation where people would care so much.
And then in
Labyrinth of Evil
, Anakin's drinking freely at bars with Obi-Wan, and as far as I know he's over 21 at that point.
Or maybe it's kind of like the way everyone has a blaster? There's no specific law aside from what individual establishments set? Though I don't know if there really is a law regarding blasters. Anyway, just curious about the drinking age, since that would probably affect how one approaches it in a fic.

Alcohol...
Seeing how I'm not much of a drinker(at all, really) and my one experience of being drunk was not pleasant, I tend to stay away from alcohol in my fics.
I just don't really think it's needed. I have problems after a glass of wine, and so it's hard for me to write characters who constantly drink/are alcoholics. I will write in the occasional glass or two and I might mention that someone's looking a bit tipsy or has had enough, but I don't go into much detail. The details aren't really needed.
As for individual characters- I can see Anakin occasionally drinking more than he necessarily should. But if someone writes him like that, there should be a point to it. Not 'oh, let's go get Anakin drunk for the fun of it' kind of a thing, but a real 'why would Anakin go to a bar and get drunk' thought-out reasoning behind it. Same with all the characters, i was just using Anakin as an example.
Why
have they chosen to drink? Peer Pressure? Acceptance? Simply the desire to? (I think that would fit more Han than a Jedi, however), wanting to experiment? To take their mind off of problems? People drink for different reasons and those reasons are what I find important. There's nothing wrong with a beer or glass of wine at dinner, but a character going out and getting totally drunk needs
some
sort of explanation behind it.

Hmmm...how about, Anakin decides that getting smashed, having Obi-Wan help him home, and yakking along the way is preferrable to turning to the Dark Side.
A lot of people have scenes in their fics that take place in a cantina, so I can see the characters having a drink over their nefarious dealings. In
LoE
, Obi-Wan and Anakin got drinks as part of keeping up appearances and appealing to the people they were asking information from. I think. I can't remember.
And then people have characters sitting around brooding with a glass of wine or something similar. Kind of like the classic movie shot of a brooding character lighting up a cigarette. The character comes home, pours a drink, kicks back (or broods
) - it's habit. Or they like the drink. Seeing that in a fic, I just take it as part of the character.
I guess it's hard sometimes, because the impression can be that the cool characters like a stiff drink. So you don't want to stick a drink in their hands just to show that they're cool. But it also depends on the characters. Smugglers are more likely to drink, given the nature of their lives.
Jedi in general probably don't drink recreationally, though maybe the Corellians get a little wild! Or perhaps some of them use it to numb the pain in their lives.
My point? I don't know.
Probably that, if the use of alcohol is really obvious, then there should be a good reason for it, because a serious problem could easily become something that people are laughing at. But if it's a detail, like the aforementioned person coming home at the end of the day, then that's what I would call a PG use of the booze.
edit:
Just remembered this. My psychology teacher in HS said that when someone says, "I'm going to get drunk this weekend!" it means there's a problem. That is, getting drunk for the sake of getting drunk. And while it's funny to have the Rogues and Wraiths get together for a drinking game or run out and get smashed, I think it's something that has to be approached with care.

I must admit that I've never used alcohol in a story for anything other than humor (drunk Luke trying to hit on drunk non-sister Leia, drunk Luke trying to hit on a Trandoshan and being thrown into a swimming pool by wedge, drunk Leia and Mon Mothma being morose). I agree that any drunken state has to be explained. What do you all think about alcoholism during the war? It certainly happened here on earth, did they have problems with it during the OT, PT, whatever?
