Well, I'm not Swedish, but american myself. However, frozen meals featuring swedish meatballs and pasta are quite tasty in an onionish-gravy kinda way.

However, that kind of brown gravy is only one type of swedish meatball I've experienced. Another time, the brown gravy had a lot of sweetnessiness in it.

Could you describe brown sauce for me, for example?

Brown gravy is a standard ingredient in all swedish cooking. If I knew how to cook better than I do I'd tell you how to make one, however, for any dish requiring gravy I have to yell for my wife.

She does put a lot of cream into it, that I know. I can tell by the size of my waistline happy

Meatball/Metaball!! ROFL

Brown sauce also goes well on beans on toast and sausage/bacon sandwiches... it also has been known to spice up a fry up.

Don't you American's have brown sauce? It's kind of like a non-sweet barbecue sauce, but not very... that's the closest that I can get to it.

Swedish "Brunsaas" (Brown gravy), as served with meatballs and potatoes (and, if it's done correctly, with lingon-berries and pickeled quecumber (spelling?)) is made by frying the meatballs, in butter, in a pan. Add some hacked-up onion in (about one whole...) Add cream and spices. Black pepper and salt, mostly.

If you have burnt something in the pan so that there are some charred pieces, filter them out or simply lift them out with a spoon.

Not very lightweight food, but then again - traditional swedish cooking seldom is. (We were a people of forrest-workers and farmers until 50 years ago...)

Now - THAT's off topic...

The entire off-topicness aside....

I really like meatballs 'swedish style' IKEA do some very nice ones, which have the 'brown gravy' and good old lingonberry sauce as well. Top cuisine, and an essential purchase every time we shop in Brent Park IKEA. If I'm feeling particularly greedy (that'll be every day then) we have a starter of cured salmon and dill.

And then there is herring happy ('Sill' isn't it Zap?). I'm the only one that seems to like that in our family though.

IKEA shopping - where every trip becomes a smorgasbord... tongue

(And it's totally impossible to have a family party in Sweden, such as "midsommar" or christmas, without it!)

Now, if I only could find some Swedish film-nerds aswell... I guess I can't tempt you guys to get over here, even if you like meatballs wink

Cucumber.

And yes, America has brown gravy. We usually put it on mashed potatoes, roast beef....etc.

Ingredients
6 tablespoons butter or margarine, divided
1 onion, chopped
1 cup dried bread crumbs
1 cup evaporated milk, divided
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 pinch dried parsley
1 1/2 teaspoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon tomato sauce
ground nutmeg to taste

Directions

1 Melt 3 tablespoons butter or margarine in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and saute for 5 to 10 minutes, or until tender.
2 In a separate medium bowl, combine the bread crumbs with 2 tablespoons of evaporated milk and stir, allowing the crumbs to absorb the milk. Add the ground beef, onion, egg, salt, ground black pepper and parsley to taste. Mix well and form into golf ball sized meatballs.
3 Heat remaining butter or margarine in the same skillet over medium to medium high heat and add the meatballs. Carefully shake the skillet to turn the meatballs, as needed. Saute for 10 to 15 minutes, or until meatballs are browned on all sides. Transfer the meatballs to a serving platter, reserving the liquid in the skillet.
4 Add the flour to the skillet and stir until smooth. Then gradually add the evaporated milk, tomato sauce and nutmeg to taste; again stirring until mixture is warmed, smooth and creamy. Strain over meatballs.

But brown sauce (at least the stuff that HP make in the UK) is entirely different to gravy. It's gelatenous, and about the same consistancy as ketchup. It even comes in a similar glass/plastic squeezy bottle
