"I vs. Me" draws its inspiration from real life. I was hitting some interesting points in my life that left me feeling sorta depressed, so I decided to watch some films on my computer while waiting for someone to sign onto instant messenger. I came across "
Mirror, Mirror
" on my hard drive from earlier this year, and decided to watch it. Inspiration struck, and I wrote a script. I filmed it when I got back up to college a couple days later, and now a week after that the final version is done.
Thanks to Phi for hosting, and special thanks to Neszis for the inspiration of how to convey it.

Yeah, I'd like to apologize for that. Compression is not my strong suit. It's slightly better than before, though... (thanks for the audio compression help a couple day ago, people).

RE: OFFICIAL RELEASE THREAD: I vs. Me
Ok.
First of all. That's an awesome t-shirt.
Some of the angles are creative, esp 3:27, and I like 2:23 a lot, but those spots where the camera goes to the other side, and put the mirror guy on the left side of the composition, that's a breach of the 180 degree line rule.
Generally, I'm not real strict on the rule, but it does have it's value.
Riverdance is cool too.
So, to sum up.
1. Great Shirt
2. Some nice angles
3. 180 Degree line rule would probably help
4. Riverdance is cool too.
Oh, and, I'd strongly suggest widescreen.

RE: OFFICIAL RELEASE THREAD: I vs. Me
Well, I didn't want to stay on just one side of myself- I actually purposely avoided that. And I can't very well position the camera on the *other* side of the mirror... I usually do stick to the 180 degree rule, but when one person is in a mirror it's a little easier to know who is who.
The shirt comes courtesy of
ThinkGeek
, and I wore it on purpose as a good all-around geek shirt.
Ooh, someone recognized the music

I figured as much.
You could try to reverse the footage shot into the mirror, and make it plain for people to see that the person in the forground in reversed in some way, i.e. text on the shirt.
Maybe. It still might confuse people. Difficult no matter how you cut it.
Part of the brilliance of your inspiration, Mirror, Mirror.
Oh, right, that title sequence isn't bad either.

RE: OFFICIAL RELEASE THREAD: I vs. Me
Wow, this is obviously a very personal film, one where you are sort of letting out lots of feelings and thoughts, etc. The process of doing it must have been kind of liberating in a way. I think it's very cool when a filmmaker puts so much personal energy into a film like that.
Tekky gripe -- I found the music kind of loud compared to the dialogue, made it kind of hard to concentrate on the speaking.

Very nice. I agree that the sound was off. It was hard to hear the dialogue (monologue?) at times. Drop the music down a bit and bump the voice audio and you'll be fine.
Also, I think there was a spot on your mirror that kept bugging me, though that could have been something on my moniter.

Yeah, that was great. It's always fun to reveal your inner thoughts on film. Problem was, I couldn't hear them over the music sometimes.

Yeah, I suppose the music could have done with a bit of lowering.
Yes, it *is* a spot on the mirror... I hadn't thought about that part until a couple days ago when watching a proof at a higher resolution.
I'm glad I was able to get this out. Even though the inner conflict has been mostly resolved at this point, it's good to acknowledge that it existed.

It would have been cool if you dirtied up the mirror on purpose.

I want your room
Or at least your wall decorations. My rez was not nearly so cool. I do, however, note that your rez used the same gigantic bucket of blue paint that mine did.
Anyway, the film itself. Good job with the cloning! And the script. Favourite line: "Geek." Well delivered
Minor editing glitches (you could take a few more frames out between cuts so you don't overlap, and some minor changes in character positions over cuts) but they didn't destroy the point.
You obviously put alot of effort into the acting, and it shows. Arm waving and all (even though you regretted it in editing
).
Overall, it's good to see a truly independent film. Well, unless you count the tripod. I can't use the excuse of having "no one to film with" now

That reminded me of Dichotomy. Both the concept, and I think your acting is similar to Clay. Music went well and yeah, you've heard the rest.
Nice job

Well considering I'm really my only actor... someone might remember Bigger Fish, in which I played all three roles, and more recently Time Loop, where I played one that goes back in time and meethimself and tell him to go back in time and meet himself and tell him to go back in time and...
Yeah. Needless to say, the tripod was a great investment.
RE: T3h d0rm. I go to SUNY Institute of Technology. It's a geek school. The biggest club on campus is the Gamers club. The biggest new one is the Anime Club. So this stuff is socially acceptable and even cool. Those decals were rather expensive, I'll have to see if it's an investment I want to go through each year... they can come off the walls, but they aren't reapplicable.
Ugh... the hand waving makes me want to do something with a straight jacket. I dunno, something like a psycho seeing himself walk into his cell. The me without it willh ave his hands pompously behind his back... yeah, that'd be a little easier. An earlier version had a lot of blurs to seperate the two portions of the frame, but with the new version the blurs are drastically reduced, instaed using more brightness control (note to self- manual exposure is good). I'm glad that it still works on the hands, though.
As far as continuity of positions... there was worse in the original cut. The shot behind the arm was added in afterwards, because the original had a closed door and a very minor camera shift, which came off as really bad. I'll have to make more pre-production notes next time, but this was primarily for the message; film stuff came second.
Edit:
And yes, I am overly elated that I have a real camera. No more appending "Shot on a Sony DSC-P50 still camera with additional MPEG recording" at the end of each film for me! The only "downside" is three and a half times more frames to roto for cloning. But at least there are clearly defined edges. Take it from me, compressed 320X240 at 8.333... frames per second sux0rz.

RE: OFFICIAL RELEASE THREAD: I vs. Me
I really can't believe this didn't get more attention.
Maybe I particularly like this film because I was similarly inspired by mirror, mirror, but then maybe I just like it because it was overall pretty well done.
Did you post this over at 2k?
I didn't check, but if you haven't, you should.
This is so good, that a friend of mine actually told me to download it.
Oh yeah, that opening title was pretty cool!
Music was just a little bit too loud, but we all make that mistake.
I'd love to see a remastered version, with widescreen cropping and lower music levels.
OF course, that might just be stupid, but I like the idea.
You have fun!
(for all those that didn't take the time to read all of what I said, a brief summary: BUMP!!)
