Yes, you read that right... shock

Apparently this is legit, as I talked to Mary Franklin at Lucasfilm about it a little while ago - but there will be a selection of fanfilms playing in the Cannes Market during the Cannes Film Festival...

And yes, you still read that right... I'm still processing it myself... grin

Here's the schedule:
Thursday, May 19 - Short Film Corner
Escape from Tatooine - 11:30am
One Season More - 11:35am
Pink Five - 11:39am
Crazy Watto - 11:43am
SW Gangsta Rap - 11:45am
Silent But Deadly - 11:53am
JabbaWookiee - 11:59am
Speeder - 12:01pm
Christmas Tauntauns - 12:06pm
JarJar's Walking Papers - 12:09pm

It's a very odd group - I guess they were trying to pick films that are all under 5 minutes or so...

Fenn (who apparently can now claim to have had a film screen at Cannes!)

thats interesting.. i thought that cannes only allows entries shot from film. I know sundance wont take it unless it was just with a film camera.

Why do you make things up?

Both Sundance and Cannes allow entries shot digitally. Sundance has been projecting entries digitally since 1999. And if Cannes didn't allow digital cinema, they wouldn't have been able to screen Episode II there. They also exhibited Russian Ark as part of competition in 2002, and that was shot digitally and collected directly to hard drives. The Blair Witch Project also screened there, a large portion of which, as we all know, was filmed on standard res video.

I don't know where you got your information, but if it was ever accurate, it's not anymore.

The winner of the last cinematography award at Sundance won her award for a film shot on a Dvx-100a.

I don't really see it as bizarre. Film festivals have always screened short film, or animation showcases. I can't see this as being that far removed.

well i wasnt sure, my video productions teacher thought that sundance only accepted film (by that i mean not miniDV or Hi8,) so if it doesnt have to be from a higher end camera then i will have to enter something

I think it's part of the qualifications of a video productions teacher to have no idea what they're talking about.

I know of another teacher who taught that when writing a script you must always include a complete description of shots, cuts, and other details that anyone who has spent five minutes reading about screenwriting knows not to do.

we were talking about film festivals and someone brought up a film only contest, and then asked if sundance was film only he said "hmm i think it might be.. im not sure.." so i was going by that. But just becuase he didnt know off the top of his head if sundance accepted things not filmed on higher-end cameras does NOT mean he doesnt know about video productions, and doesnt mean he isnt qualified. He is an excelent teacher and i wouldnt want any other..

Yeah but don't they all fall into the parody category? ie. They'd qualify for the official fan films festival, unlike most stuff on TFN? Could be simply Cannes cashing in on the ROTS hype.

Hardware Wars was voted "Most Popular Short Film" at the Chicago Film Festival in 1977 after all. Oddly enough the Chicago FF website is plugging a screening of the fanmade Raiders remake next Friday night.

All this points to fan films being regarded as more and more legitimate, rather than just 'geeks with a camera and a couple of sticks'.

That was my first thought on it. And good thing, too.

Personally -- and maybe this is a little bit random to this topic, but -- if I ever create a story that takes place in a vast playing field like a Middle Earth/Arda or a GFFA, and has such a wide and dedicated fan base, I hope I have the philantropic spirit to not only allow but encourage fan films, not only parodic but dramatic as well. It not only keeps the fan interest up, but the really good ones, as they do here, could showcase some amazing talent and possibly even expand the universe in brand new directions. I might even consider sanctioning the really good and creative ones (and I mean REALLY good) as part of the official canon.

Or I'll make a wildly successful franchise and the money will crush my soul, and the best I'll manage is the blind eye policy Lucas has taken.

Fan films being a relatively recent phenomena (and since they'll be my background), I hope I'll be able to take a more progressive stance to them.

    If that day ever comes.
