No, zahn set him up as a dr. watson character. Not exactly smart, but one who willing to listen to his mentors(who ever is in charge of him). Other authors gave him more character, and zahn finally linked that up and made pelleon a very powerful man in the imperial remenant. But still he's mostly descent but not the best the empire ever had.

The only difference while all those others ended up dead, pelleon lived by letting up the white flag and stating peace treaty.

Throw in the towel and live. Some in the empire saw that to be a cowardly act.

''Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.''

If you can call a middle-aged, male Imperial with a 'tache a bridesmaid...

I'd say that he's pretty tactically brilliant, now.

Well, I assume he listens to advice of his council when they give him ideas. That would assist in his ability to hold off threats. No man who prides his well being listens to himself only. Plenty of people who lost wars because they didn't listen to the advice of there officers.

Actually Canor Jax did seem to be a man with a plan and I think that he's underestimated as an EU villain.

I don't have the Crimson Empire Guide but from what I saw it seemed like canor Jax was an aristocrat born Imperial and Kir Kanos was one of the Outer Rim dirt poor types.

In effect like Maarek Steele a man whose world was rescued by the Empire vs. Canor Jax whose position in society allowed him the best training and fighting skills.

In truth not to put too fine of a point on it I assumed he was hoping to wear down Kir Kanos the entire time. Colonel Shev and his death might have been prevented but he didn't want that...he wanted Colonel Shev punished along with his troops by showing him how dangerous the royal gaurd are.

The Empire's Revenge was already doomed and my suspcion is that Canor Jax is NOT a genius (yes he's a very smart very ruthless man) but only worked out Kir Kanos's plan the moment that the Scimitar was allowed to be taken and then it was too late.

At this point Jax knew that the troops would get slaughtered but Jax knew it was down to a personal battle between him and Canos. There was no other way to lure him out...sacraficing his troops would hopefully tire Kir out that

A:) he could kill him
B:) His guy could kill him

Jax is what we in the RPG games call a "mid level villain". A low level villain is Greedo or the Bounty Hunter on Ord Mantel 1-6th level.

Jax is 6-10th, basically a man whose like Admiral Piett or Zinn is dangerous but not entirely a super genius. Running the Empire is only beyond his capacities when faced with legendary Heroes like Han, Leia, etc and not solidifying his hold.

He still makes mistakes but shows remarkable foresight and skill.

To keep this on topic Jax is not insane save mildly paranoid and willing to do anything to keep Kanos (a man he's terrified of though you have to read between the lines to look upon) from killing him.

There is a definate wrath of God element to the man (kanos) and the frustrated sinner in Jax.

No, I'd say he sacrificed the Emperor's Revenge a bit stupidly.

He could've said soemthing, but instead decided to bugger off & let Wessel get blown to bits.

Whilst we're on the subject, does anyone else find it inconcievable that ONE shuttle-sized starfighter exploding could blow a hole larger than a Victory Star Destroyer out of an Imperial Star Destroyer II?

Let's not set Pelleon up too highly...

He was involved in the

A:( Slavery Runs on Kashkyyk

B:( The consolidation of the Empire under Isard

C:( The Death of Grand Moff Ardus Kaine and the subjugation of the tyrant ruled Pentastar Alignment to the even more tyrannically ruled Empire Reborn

D:( Murdered his fellow Imperials under Warlord Teradoc I believe

E:( Was aligned with Admiral Daala in her psychological campaign of terror (an obviously mentally ill woman as stated) across the galaxy

F:( Continued fighting for what amounted to a lost cause for several more

While Pelleon has a few honorable traits like Grand Admiral Thrawn the "Watson" is still guilty of numerous war crimes against the galaxy.

He just doesn't appear to be completely psychotic. I'm surprised he didn't have the man who insulted the Emperor executed in VotF

"C:( The Death of Grand Moff Ardus Kaine and the subjugation of the tyrant ruled Pentastar Alignment to the even more tyrannically ruled Empire Reborn"

Actually Ardus Kaine was highly loyal to the emperor and joined the empire reborn on his own choice. Kaine died in battle doing the emperor's commands, during the operation shadowhand.

Pelleon absorbed kaine's fleet as his own after the death.

Pelleon had nothing to do with kaine's death, or kaine own choice to be loyal to the emperor.

I admit that was a gross display of cowardice on the part of Canor Jax but my guess is that if he'd hesitated or told the Captain

"DUMP THAT THING NOW!"

It would have gone off and been the end of Canor Jax. It's not admirable but the fact he survived should be a testament to it...

Like General Tagge departing the Death Star in marvel comics when in the Novels he just told Tarkin it would be stupid too.

Since we never heard of him again...

"I find your cowardice less than amusing."

[Whilst we're on the subject, does anyone else find it inconcievable that ONE shuttle-sized starfighter exploding could blow a hole larger than a Victory Star Destroyer out of an Imperial star destroyer II?]

Counterpoint in the Old Republic TPM era there devices called "Ion Bombs" which Xanatos rigged enough to destroy all life on a planet.

I use them in my RPG whenever I need a device that scares the living crud out of my players....

It makes sense that Kir Kanos had access to Imperial High Tech weaponry and could probably keep himself heavily armed. If I don't miss my guess he either

A:) Knew Someone who could do it...

B:) DId it himself....

In rigging all of the Proton Torpedoes aboard the Scimitar bomber to go off at once...a highly dangerous but suitably royal guard thing to do.

36 proton torpedoes (If I remember a Scimitar's bombing complement correctly) in an unshielded starfighter bay....

Much like Callista's little sabotage effort.

Speaking of Kir Kanos does anyone think that he should be classified as missing a few bats in his belfray?

I'm still trying to figure out whether he killed Sadeet deliberately and my guess is after reviewing that yes he did.

While that says more about the NRI agents stupidity more than anything about Kanos that's some freaking bizzare anti-social obsessive disorder there.

Well no more than Batman I suppose...

I wonder if the Republic would kill him, incarcerate him,or give him a medal.

As for Ardus Kaine...

Are you sure, I was under the impression that Kaine was crushed as one of the Emperor's warlords who refused to yield to a clone/imposter.

He cordially said:

''Thank you, General...'' Got up, put a hand to his head in a long suffering manner, turned to Blim, said: ''Wessel is a fool...'' turned to his black armoured stormies, said ''Quickly, follow me.'' went to find a shuttle & two TIE piolots, loaded his men in, got strapped in, got clearence to leave, launched repulsors, & buggered off.

Wouldn't it have been that much esier to just say:

''Wessel, you idiot, release the tractor beam & shoot it down.''

Or, failing that..

''YOU IDIOT! GET IT AWAY! GET THE THING AWAY & SHOOT IT DOOOWN!!!

I was just annoyed at the criminal stupidity involved in allowing both those cool black armoured stormtroopers & the Emperor's Revenge be sacificed when clear alternatives were available.

My info was straight out of the Essential Chronology.

Infact it's the only source of any info of ardus kaine beyond the penistar allignment article.

for your information that wasn't a clone imposter, he was the real thing. He even changed bodies a few times since the original rebellion began. See Vader's Return.

Carnor Jax was under orders from another individual actually. Lady Lumiya was secretly issuing orders to him, as her sith apprentice.
