Well, as I'm revising my script, I've been editing the main story a bit and I have been mingling with the lines and almost inevitably, I've stumbled across a chance to input a line or two from the movies into my script. Might I remind you, these are the same reoccuring lines such as "I have a bad feeling about this", etc.
What is your opinions on this? Do you frown upon it? To you slightly chuckle to yourself and say "Heh, he just said ----"? Or do you go upon a mad tantrum at its sight (well, sound), close the file on your computer, log onto JCF (if you're not already) and go on a "mad-film-bash!!!"?
BTW -- I must note the line is not "I have a bad feeling about this"...I repeat...it is not...

I think "I have a bad feeling about this" and/or "May the Force be with you" are the only two acceptable canon lines to put in a fan film. The first is a wink to the fans and the second is necessary ceremonial speech if Jedi are involved. Anything else is just lazy writing.

After hearing almost every line ever delivered by a jedi in the Lucas films yoinked and used in a fanfilm, I'd have to agree. You'd have to have a really clever twist to pull it off in this community.
Though I've been looking for a witty use of "aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper"

In a parody, it's completely acceptable IMO. Not too sure about a serious film. Depends on the context I suppose.

I don't know if I'd say COMPLETELY acceptable. Nothing gets on my nerves faster than a "parody" that does nothing but parrot the original with the occasional twist.

Use it and you owe me royalties.

I'm with Dorkman. They're the only two quotes I wont cringe over.
"I have a bad feeling about this" is always great if it's in there as more than just a cheap nod.

I think Lucas was uncharacteristically strong in the force when he decided NOT to vocalize the line "I try spinning, thats a good trick" again in ROTS, but just left it to the subconscious

I just hope those royalties are not that expensive...
As for the topic, yeah, you just have to be careful when you do it, but I'm not against it.

Ok, I have no problem with "may the force be with you. In the Star Wars universe it is tantamount to "good luck". Use it all you want. But "I have bad feeling about this" infuriates me. It sounded good like once in the original trilogy, and every time I heard it in the prequels I could feel my spine grateing (sp?). Most of the time it sounds like nails on a chalk board to me. As for other lines, I think it is better to useoriginal dialog when ever possible, though occasionally the script may scream out for a tasteful cannon quote.

Depends. There are a lot of visual scenes in Star Wars that have parallels in other films... only the context is reversed. You'd have to do the same thing with the lines. For example, I have no probem with:
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
Sith Gal in hancuffs: I hate you.
Dude who happens to love Sith gal: I know.
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
Alien mechanic: What know you about ready? For eighty years I've been fixing stardrives! I'll keep my own damn council as to what's ready to fly!
- - - - - - - - - - - - -

I think it's one thing if this film is "aware" of Star Wars.
If it's a Star Wars film, Maru comes to mind, and you're just quoting the movies, you'll probably find yourself getting some negative responses.
In parody, you'll probably want to alter them for a comedic effect. For a comedy, meh. Do what you want, lol. I haven't written a good one... ever.
My current project is aware of Star Wars, because it exists for them as it does to us: as a movie.
They don't quote it, exactly, but the words spoken in it do become relevant at certain points.
Write for originality, and I'd say only directly quote it if you see NO other option. Sometimes a scene or a moment just calls for a quote.
Do what you gotta do.
Heh, or do what must be done.
Whatever.
FA:
"Spenceley, you're either my ally or my enemy."
"I know."
You can imagine my agony when I saw episode 3:
"You're either with me, or you're my enemy."
(I like my way better.)

Even worse...apparently some guy named Jesus said something similar 2000 years ago.

"Even worse...apparently some guy named Jesus said something similar 2000 years ago. "
LMAO!
So, nothing more than "May the Force be with you" and "I have a bad feeling about this"...well, what if the line seems to fit with the characters and the current occurances?
Now this is podracing!
Too funny...

I dunno, maybe if you did a fanfilm spin off of the sports of the Star Wars universe a line like 'now this is podracing' might have fitted in very nicely. Somebody's walking past various screens of sports, "Here we see speeder bike racing, there is ewok tossing, oh, now this is pod racing." I'm not as funny as I like to think.
I generally think previously used Star Wars lines shouldn't be put in, but if you write the dialogue and by coincidence something you write was said in Star Wars (it could happen!) you shouldn't take it out.
And I agree, it works in parodies a lot better than serious fanfilms, but that's due to the nature of parodies.
But I like to see 'I have a bad feeling about this', it's a nice way of making the fanfilm feel like canon, provided it fits and isn't just shoehorned in because it should be there. (You know, in a situation where saying that line really doesn't make any sense).
