DVD Commentary Rolling Report
Standby for a long long night.
Knoll talks about scroll.
Saturday Matinee talk again from GL
Coleman - original shot pre-curser to ANH.
Lucas - Wanted opening shot to say war and introduce Anakin and Kenobi.
Coleman says that choreography important on planes.
Lucas - setting up clones exist by shot inside x-wing. Lot of exposition. Early x-wings to old vulture droids.
Knoll - space battle in upper atmosphere. Gave them chances to do other things that couldn’t happen in space.
Obi Wan and Anakin are now partners and friends who rely on each other. Not padawan/master relationship. Makes end battle tragic.
Lucas - Sets up that they’re equals. Both makes mistakes. Neither are in charge.

RE: DVD Commentary Rolling Report
R2’s action movie. Lucas loves him. Woooo.
Building up relationship with Anakin and Obi Wan - comfortable. No more petulant rivalry.
RM - everyone loves the R2 stuff. He wanted it cut at first!
Lucas - R2’s funniest sequence in his opinion
Invisible Hand throne room - largest set.
Lucas - Had CL for one day. Shot all close ups first. Action mainly done by stunt man. George nervous about face replacement.
Major issue is that Sidious can convert Jedi - like Dooku. Sidious testing Anakin. Whole thing is a set up to test Anakin’s strength. Dooku left in dark. When Anakin proves himself by killing Dooku, Sidious see’s he is ready.

RE: DVD Commentary Rolling Report
Palpatine is interested in separating Anakin from Obi Wan - Lucas
Originally Sidious said things to make Anakin distrust Obi Wan. Lucas thought it was over doing it.
Lucas - Space battles from old pirate movie - when they are side by side.
Lucas - Opening piece originally 1 hour. Had to cut it down to 30mins. More exciting.
Knoll cameos as Anakin’s hand when he catches the cables in the elevator.
Didn’t really work on Grievous until the last 7 months
General Grievous reminiscent of what Anakin is going to become. 20% alien. 80% Robot - Lucas.
Grievous not fully working.
Echoes what is going to happen to Anakin.

RE: DVD Commentary Rolling Report
Lots of discussion about effects of Grievous, magna guards, space battle etc
Lucas - wanted cunning, cowardly villain in Grievous. Not super powerful. Wanted him more like Sidious - sleazy, behind the scenes. Always runs after every fight.
Re-entry shots of Invisible Hand were good fun to do - Knoll
The close up of the cockpit of the crashed invisible hand is a homage to Spielberg. He loves those shots - Lucas.
McGregor kept advancing accent and delivery to be more like Alec Guinness - Lucas
Where Anakin and Padme meet is a tricky set because of the pillars.
Padme’s hairdo is done to be reminiscent of Leia - but more elegant. Away from Leia’s revolutionary type though - Lucas.
Used one of the ships from an earlier episode to establish the TF.
Grievous is coughing because Mace crushes him (force choke) - Knoll

RE: DVD Commentary Rolling Report *May Contain Spoilers*
The scene on the balcony shows Anakin and Padme in their normal life. Focus on their hopes and dreams of the future - and the child (at the moment). Settle down before everything goes wrong in the next scene.
Discussion about whether they show the dreams. Lucas wanted to show what was going on so put in the dream. Important to see what was going on with Anakin.
Veranda scene - was first going to be shot at dawn. Changed it to night - more ominous and too many dawn scenes.
This scene describes the overall plot, the dilemma they are in, the domestic crisis that underpins the whole movie. The fear Anakin has of losing her - Lucas
To underline the dilemma that Anakin has of the fear of loss he has of Padme is shown through the scene with Yoda - Lucas.
Its fear of losing someone he loves, flipside of greed,.. Sidious wants power over everything. Anakin wants the power to save the on he loves. But he’s going against the fate and what is natural. Once he gets power though it corrupts him and he wants more power - overthrow Sidious.
Lucas on Palpatines appointment of Anakin to council. Move by Palpatine to cause trouble between Anakin and the council by putting him on the council. Palpatine has inserted himself between the senate and the council. Usually Jedi report to senate. Now they report directly to him.
RM - Council scene. This is where we see Anakin almost lose it. Becoming selfish and self absorbed.
Lucas - How democracy turn into dictatorships. Looked at how the senate kills Caesar etc. History lesson on democracy become dictatorships! Not about force. More interesting when its given over.
Obi wan asking Anakin to spy on Palpatine. Tension between Jedi and Palpatine. Tension between them results in Anakin being caught in the middle. Palpatine knew council would resent it. Anakin still loyal to the council but is in a tough spot.

The great thing about the commentary right now is that once Anakin turns, the commentary turns...meaning George gets really specific about certain details about the themes of the film and how they fit into the Saga and his source material for certain details and themes.

Yoda rubbing his head in gunship - homage to 7 samurai.
Anakin and Padme discussion over politics - This scene is set up to establish the pressure Anakin is under. Divides Anakin and Padme. He’s confused about Padme’s beliefs. Anakin’s is loyal to senate and Palpatine.
Some scenes cut out with Padme becoming involved with rebel alliance with Mothma and Organa.
Scene at the opera - lots of cameos
This scene was originally written to be in Palpatines office. Too many scenes there though. Changed to opera - squid lake.
Discussion about Opera effects
Two seductions scenes. Opera is one of them. Its an un-star wars like scene - Lucas
RM - creepy scene. Essential information in terms of ANAKINS ORIGINS!
IM had laryngitis.
First two films very apparent politically. Opaque. Runs throughout whole saga. Sense of things to come. We know what the democracy will be after ROTJ due to what prequels set up.

RE: DVD Commentary Rolling Report *May Contain Spoilers*
When you get to Padme's Ruminations, Lucas is very clear in saying that Anakin chooses Padme above anything else.
Also, Anakin did want Palpatine put on trial so he could basically get the information out of him while he was in jail. Windu forced Anakin's hand when he went to strike Palpatine. Anakin didn't know that Palpatine was going to take out Mace. Anakin didn't know that Palpatine was faking. Lucas' basic words.

RE: DVD Commentary Rolling Report *May Contain Spoilers*
Council meeting Kashyyyk - sets up hologram meetings. How they communicate.
D-day landing on Kashyyyk.
Last scene with Anakin and Obi Wan when they are friends. There relationship has been strained. Anakin trying to repair it. Obi Wan is a rock and doesn’t get upset like Obi Wan - is calm and patient. While Anakin appears to feel good about the relationship he is concerned and isn’t feeling good. Concerned about how the Jedi feel about him - not trusting him.
All clones are clones of Jango - none of them are BOBA Starwarsagent! Lol
Because Anakin has been having troubles with obi wan his nightmare about Padme involves obi wan because of his jealousy. He is confused and emotionally unbalanced. Confused about Palpatine, the council and doesn’t want to lose Padme.
Figured out new powers to save Padme - knows its wrong. Mixed feelings.
RM - loves the darkness in it.
Lucas - one of his favoutite characters is Tion Meddon.

I've listened to 70 % of it.
I fast forwarded too heavily sfx oriented parts, and there are quite a few.
Interesting. But certainly not my favourite starwars DVD commentary, although it's my favorite movie.
