This thread is for people who read Marvel comics to discuss their favourite titles, the team-ups and all other histories of the Marvel Universe. This includes the Ultimate series, film adaptations, etc etc.

So, who reads what and who is your favourite Marvel hero and why? I read X-Men, New X-Men, Ultimate Spiderman, normal Spiderman, and Spidey's my favourite. I love the smartass remarks, see... wink

Great thread idea E_S!

I actually don't read the comics themselves, however, I am familiar with the characters, as I suppose most fandom geeks are!

Marvel has helped produce many of the GREAT recent super-hero films, ie: X-Men, Spiderman, Hulk, DareDevil, etc...

I would really LOVE to see a joint Spiderman / DareDevil movie, as they are the most realist characters, share the same universe, etc...

I read pretty much everything Marvel, except for the Avengers and Fantastic Four. I don't know, i just never got into them. What i have read of them has been... well, a little boring in my opinion.

At the moment, monthly i buy Amazing Spider-Man and Uncanny X-Men. I try to buy the odd issue here and there from other titles, but i haven't got the money for it. Still, i've managed to amass a collection of over 300 books.

Everyone keeps saying this, but its true. The writing job on Amazing Spidey is the best the writing has been for a decade, if not longer. Ol' J. Michael Straczynski has been doing a great job. And Romita Jr's art continues to improve over the years. He's one of my favourite artists.

Ender, if you like humour in you're comic books, i recommend you look for the first few issues of Exiles. Morph is hilarious in it! I haven't bought any of the newer issues (lack of money), so i dunno if they're as good as the series was at the start.

Now, lets talk about some themes in the current running of Amazing Spider-Man. Ezekiel is a pretty interesting character. He's Peter's buddy, and continues to gain Pete's trust, but there's something mysterious about ol' 'zek. I think something dark lurks in his past. He is like a philosophical guide to Spider-Man. He thinks of Spidey as this mythical hero, and tries to guide him in that direction. He is, in a way, what Morpheus is to Neo.

Well, Spidey and DareDevil are actually good friends (as is Spiderman and the Human Torch). They also have a common character in Ben Urich, the Daily Bugle reporter, and have fought Kingpin from time to time.

Kaine, did you ever see the last "team up" Punisher and Spidey had?

After being beaten silly whilst unconscious, Spiderman groggily asks Punisher "What happened?"

Frank replies; "We had a teamup. You were great." laugh

Ender_Sai,

Yep, I realised that they were friends after I discovered one of their cartoon DVD's whilst working at Kmart.

However, I would LOVE to see them both in a live action movie together.

Not enough people talking. I suggest we PM the people we know that would be interested in this kind of thing.

I really only have one regular addiction in the Marvel universe. I collect on a regular basis "New X-Men". Why only that title, you might ask? I've been a fan of Grant Morrison's writing for a VERY long time, and I think he gives our favorite team of mutants a great edginess. (I really loved the storyline he had with Cyclops having a psychic affair on Jean with Emma Frost.) The other series, though, I tend to collect in trade paperback form. My favorites in that format would be "Ultimate X-Men", "Punisher", and if Marvel puts out a good "classic" graphic novel whenever I'm shopping, I tend to go for that.

Morrison is good, but overrated, at least in his New X-Men run. Basically, he has ignored many of his new creations in favor of going back to old concepts like Phoenix. Wolverine's mysterious past (part. 100), and Cyclops' wandering eye (Colleen Wing, Lee Forrester, Madelyne Pryor, and Betsy Braddock, anyone?), and Magneto. His new characters are meaningless, and even his better creations like Xorn are now wasted (see Magneto).

And his characters don't change or grow. Jean is still angsty and unable to decide if she wants Cyclops or Wolverine (and by my count she's been rejected by both), Cyclops is still depressive and won't touch Jean, Emma is...well, Emma...

All Morrison has done is to replace the status quo of the 90's with the status quo of the new millenium. Which isn't a bad thing, but there aren't any drastic changes within the title itself. But looking back at Claremont's classic run from Uncanny X-Men #94 all the way to X-Men #3 (and ignoring his forgetable run which began 2 years ago), it is very hard for any writer to top that level of innovation. There's a reason why X-Men was Marvel's top franchise for a decade.

Yes, it was Morison that re-vamped and started JLA up again.

If you want an example of a truly dedicated writer, look no further than Larry Hama's run on the original GI Joe..

Larry wrote nearly all 155 issues of the series, staying with it for 12 years!

To him, it wasn't about the licensing, it was about the characters..

Besides the original SW Marvel comics, I think GI Joe represented the perfection of licsensed properties...

I must admit that once upon a time, I was certainly a comic book junkie.

Growing up, I started out with Captain America and Superman (I could give a story of why, but I think certain people would make a big deal about it so I won't).

At my peak, I branched off mostly into the Marvel Universe, specifically into The Avengers, the West Coast Avengers (I believe they were later renamed), The Fantastic Four, Thor, Iron Man, whatever Dr Strange's series was called, the SIlver Surfer to the most part. My brother pretty much covered the X-Men, X-Factor, New Mutants, SpiderMan (and at least several off shoots of it too) and some more, so I more or less had the entire Marvel Universe covered.

We were HUGE fans of the Marvel Super Heroe's RPG from TSR back in the mid 80's. It was one of hte best RPG systems I have ever played, it did such a grand job of bringing the Marvel Universe alive, and more importantly, it was flexible and easy to play and learn to the point that it was such a joy to play and made the marvel universe all the funner.

Didn't Chris Claremont spend more time on X-Men, Mr44? ?:|

And this'll surprise you TripleB but I read Superman for the same reason you do/did, I'll bet. Because of what they stand for.

Claremont's original run lasted from Uncanny X-Men #94-279, beginning in 1975 and ending in 1991. That's nearly 200 issues, not counting other x-titles he created like Wolverine, New Mutants, and Excalibur. Truly a phenomenal run in modern comics, and it's the world created by Claremont that brought X-Men from a title nearly cancelled to the leading superhero franchise.

Heck, X2 is based off the plot of one of Claremont's graphic novels.
