Miniseries seem to be the best way to adapt a novel or story, but also a very good way to tell any story in general. The creators have to plan out every episode, instead of taking things as they come. In the past couple years, I've noticed that there have been several really good ones that have come out.

-Taken: Take everything that you ever knew about UFOs and put it together. Excellent story.

-Band of Brothers: Based off of Steven Ambrose's book by the same name, this film is like Saving Private Ryan, only a little more realistic and based on a true story.

- Battlestar Galactica: The reimagining of the old series, retains most of the old story, and will be continued with 13 more episodes next year.

- Dune: An excellent adaptation of the classic sci-fi novelization.

- Children of Dune: An excellent followup and adaptation of the dune saga.

There are some more out there, that I can't remember/ don't know about.

THere are some new ones coming though,

-Triangle: Think Taken but with the Bremuta Triangle. Coming next year on SciFi

-Earthsea: Based on the fantasy novel. Coming next year on Sci-Fi.

-Farscape: Sci Fi will be finishing the series up, or providing a jump start for the cancelled series.

-2 Untitled Spielburg Events: Spielburg will be returning to miniseries, returning to World War II for a Pacific themed one, and to sci-fi for another "Taken" style project.

What are your favorite miniseries out there?

The only ones that I

I wasn't a big fan of Taken. The first few eps, when it was still in the 40s-60s, were great, but once it got to the present it sucked. I never even bothered with the last episode because I was so bored.

It was certainly an interesting episode. I liked the 70s-80s episodes a lot.

Another miniseries: Merlin, with Sam Neil from Jurassic Park. I've watched this one a bit. It's okay, not the greatest, but entertaining.

FX (at least I think that it is FX) is going to be showing a Spartacus miniseries. It looks terrible. The original film was great, and it's long enough to be chopped into a miniseries. I have a feeling that it will be like their previous historically-based failiure, Helen of Troy. What could possibly compell them to think that they need to go and ruin old classics...

Its great that the miniseries format is being used more often now to adapt great works of literature. There are many instances which, I think, a film should have been made in a miniseries format to begin with (LOTR comes to mind, as well as the first X-men film) I sincerely hope that the format does not fade away before being used to its greatest potential.

I think that Traffic was made into a miniseries.

...actually, Steve Soderbergh's "Traffic" is based on a european miniseries entitled "Traffik".. And now, it seems that there is a NEW "Traffic" mini based on the Soderbergh remake of the original "Traffik".. Funky..

I'll weigh in on "Taken": Have to agree the earlier episodes are MUCH better then the later ones (and what a lame finale!)

Another miniseries that i think we could bring up:

"V"

Probably my favourite "Television event" of all-time.. The followup mini, "V: The Final Battle" is decent enough, though it gets TOOO soap-opera-y, but.. That original 2-part miniseries is terrific stuff..

Also, we could bring up the gajillion Stephen King miniseres'...

"The Stand"

"It"

"The Tommyknockers"

"Rose Red"

"Storm of the Century"

..

For my money, the best one of the above is "Storm of the Century"..Truly a heartbreaking ending!

I thought that the ending of Taken was pretty good, although it could set up a follow up thing. It certainly diverges from teh typical UFO stuff, and does explain the entire series a bit.

"V" was great. It was a major hit in the early 80s and v: The Final Battle was good too. I'm trying to forget that the tv series ever happened.

"Lonesome Dove" was an excellent western miniseries about 2 retired Texas Rangers going on a cattle drive as one last adventure. It stars Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones, and many credit its success with convincing studios to back projects like Dances With Wolves and Unforgiven.

"North and South" was a Civil War miniseries back in the 80 that starred Patrick Swayze. It followed 2 friends from West Point in the 1840s all the way to the start of the Civil War. A little soap opera-ish, but very entertaining.

"Shogun" was very good. It's about a shipwrecked English naval pilot who becomes engrossed in Japan's fuedal society.

The SCI FI Channel announced that it will develop The Triangle, an epic eight-hour original miniseries from filmmakers Dean Devlin (Independence Day, Stargate) and Bryan Singer (X-Men, X2), set against the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle. The Triangle will focus on a disparate group of people who are haunted by their experiences within the Bermuda Triangle.

Singer and Devlin, in their first-ever collaboration, will executive produce the miniseries, as well as develop the scripts from their original story. They may also each direct some of the four two-hour episodes. The Triangle is slated to air in early 2005.

"We are thrilled to be working with Dean and Bryan," SCI FI Channel President Bonnie Hammer said in a statement. "It is exciting to provide a forum for this mind-meld between two of entertainment's best and brightest sci-fi creatives."

"Bryan and I have been friends for many years and we've always wanted to collaborate on a project that appeals to our shared passion for the science-fiction genre," Devlin said in a statement. "We're excited that the SCI FI Channel has created such a wonderful platform wherein we can tell a story with the breadth and scope that would not be possible within the limitations of a two-hour feature film."

The Triangle is only the latest of SCI FI's several miniseries projects, including the recent Emmy Award-winning Frank Herbert's Dune, the 10-night alien adventure Steven Spielberg Presents Taken and the critically acclaimed Children of Dune.

Other projects currently in development at SCI FI include The Thing, 6 Days 'til Sunday, Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars, A Tale of Two Cities, MYST, The Forever War and Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea trilogy series and literary classic Left Hand of Darkness.

I do think that 5 Days to Midnight looks like it could be pretty cool. I hadn't heard about The Triangle though. Does 5 Days look sorta like Memento to anyone?

Triangle looks like another Taken-ish story, which would be awesome.

Haven't seen Momento though.

You haven't seen Memento, the movie with Guy Pierce? This is a classic...where he loses all his short term memory and the movie is played in reverse. Very cool...5 Days reminds me a little of the movie in that he is figuring out his own murder, right?

I, Claudius was a decent mini-series.

Did anyone see the Gormenghast series? I got a little bored with it after a while. Maybe I was in the wrong frame of mind when I watched it.
