	Hello, all. Back in 2000 I thought, after watching TPM again, that I would constantly find myself engaged in speculation about Episodes II and III. I had recently discovered the fanfic phenomenon and tried my hand at it (though not in SW) and I found out, to my amazement, that people actually enjoyed my writing. Sure, I was bad, really bad, then, but the feedback was addictive and it was cool to write fictional prose for a change, since most of what I had written up until that point was poetry. Any-hoo, as my interest in my current fandom waned, I found myself returning to Star Wars, specifically the PT era. It looked exciting – here was a story that involved romance, warfare, Dark Lords of the Sith, the rise of an Empire – and to a person interested in the drama of history, it seemed like something I could really have fun with. However, I was nervous about writing in such a huge fandom with incredibly passionate and dedicated members, and SW was only one of many oddball interests of mine – it didn’t become a passion until later, and I was a bit intimidated by the thought of writing in the GFFA. I had a few ideas about how I thought Episode II and III might play out, but I mostly kept them on a back burner, until one day some pages fell out of one of my notebooks and I realized maybe this Star Wars thing wasn’t such a crazy idea. An email discussion with a fellow fanfic writer friend gave me some more interesting ideas, and I thought maybe, after doing some research into SW reference material, that it was time to get working on the project in earnest. Originally it was to be a series of vignettes from the POV’s of different characters, but I was unable to resist the temptation of creating a novel-length epic. A few days later I sat down with a legal pad and pen and wrote up a six-page outline of my story, in full fleshed-out form. I decided to call it “Duel of the Fates,” though later I split it into two episodes to better reflect GL, and the title for E3 didn’t come until much, much later. I worked on the story for awhile and was looking for a place to post it. A friend from a SW fanfic mailing list told me about TF.N, and after browsing for a few hours, I decided it looked like a good future home for my stories (FFN was vehemently anti-Anakin at the time). In March of 2002, I posted the first installment of DOTF, and my first story post in the SW fandom. Eventually, the readers came, and I developed a rapport with fellow readers and writers here, and gradually developed a reputation as a decent author. The story continued to evolve and grow, and received several award nominations, winning one for Best Action Story in the Winter ’02 Awards. Yet I still wasn’t quite satisfied with it. I thought it was good, but not quite as good as I envisioned it being. Other projects began to occupy my time and gradually, I found myself less and less motivated to work on DOTF, until one day I looked and saw it had been several months since I had updated. I figured it might be time for a repost, since I already had a big chunk of the story done that was being looked at by a beta friend, and I wanted to revise it anyway at some point or another, and that going back and revising would perhaps give the story, and my motivation, a kickstart, and maybe get some new readers who didn’t want to wade through 1,000 + posts worth of the old thread. Whether anyone is interested in reading it after AOTC came out may be a matter of debate, but I figured, oh, what the hell? Anyway, this isn’t an attempt to rewrite AOTC as a “better” version. I’m not a prequel basher by any means. This is just my way of telling the story as I would have done it, and I like both DOTF and AOTC for different reasons. Also, please keep in mind I wrote the basic storyline a long time before AOTC came out, so please don’t ask why Jango is a General or where’s Dooku. This is a little different than many Ep II stories out there. As a history major, I’ve always been interested in why important events take place the way they do. At the time I came to the JC, many Ep II fics tended to focus rather heavily on the Anakin/Amidala love story. To me, though, SW films are about adventure, political unrest, etc, and this focuses on “the big picture,” if you will, just as much as the relationships between the characters. I wanted to delve into the Clone Wars and Sidious’ political machinations, and keep the Star Wars Prequel “feeling” by having the story move fast with many things going on at once and plenty of ominous stuff looming in the background....and oh yeah, lots of action. In other words, if you’re just looking for another A/A mushy love story, you can probably find another fic that focuses on what you want to read without all the plot stuff. On the other hand, if you like plenty of action and a very busy storyline, with no more gratuitous mush than the story requires, and a zero-tolerance policy on fluff, I hope you’ll take a look. One major difference from AOTC and my version exists that is absolutely crucial to point out: In this story, the Republic military does exist. DISCLAIMER: SW belongs to George Lucas, and in case you were wondering, nope, that’s not me. I’m not making any money off of this, the sole benefit is in the satisfaction of feedback and interaction with the readers, and to get these damn ideas out of my head. However, I do put a lot of time into creating my original characters, vehicles, vessels, and locations, so if you want to use them, be a lady or gentleman and ask me first. I have used some EU material when it suited my purposes, but be forewarned – I use what I want to and throw out the rest. So, here it is, the story that inspired TACTICS, all my other fics, and of course, the famous slogan “rage against the mush-ine.” Hope you enjoy it. Prologue/opening text crawl is going up now, first post should be up in a few days when Lothi gets it back to me.
