OLD FRIENDS LONG GONE

PROLOGUE

Luke Skywalker had finally returned to Tatooine, and he was not happy about it at all. This was the planet he had dreamed of leaving his whole life, and he had never meant to come back. He had said as much to Ben Kenobi before he had sold his speeder—something which, while necessary, he now regretted. How was he going to get around, anyway? And where was he going to stay? Clearly he could not go back to the Lars moisture farm. Now that was a bad memory he wanted to stay well away from. The charred bodies of his Aunt and Uncle would not help him to free Han from Jabba the Hutt. It was best not to attract Hutt attention at first, which meant staying out of the city. Hutt… of course! The answer came to him as out of the Force: he would find Ben’s hut and stay there while formulating his plan.

“Artoo… find someone willing to sell me a speeder, good enough to travel over the Wastes. Use the cargo we brought to bargain with. And watch out for Jawas!” The droid beeped an affirmative and waddled away across Mos Eisley.

Luke himself stared out over the desert, not feeling at all confident.

Not too much later, Luke and R2D2 glided over that desert in a new speeder, silhouetted in the fading red light. They passed just near enough to the Lars farm to know where they were going, and then headed straight up into the rocky hills. Luke knew approximately where he was going, but he was not overly familiar with the Wastes. When he got close enough, he could sense a lingering concentration of the Force, and homed in on that. It was indeed Ben’s hut, and in the darkness, he could only see a few points of weather damage. It was intact enough to know it had not been sacked by Sandpeople at least. Either it had not been found, or Ben’s memory kept them away out of fear. Luke was inclined to think the later. It was starting to settle into a nighttime chill, and Luke’s stomach told him the first item of business was some dinner. It was too bad he only had heatable ration packs—and no heater. He would have to heat them up the old fashioned way—over a fire.

YEARS EARLIER

The wind howled like a Krayt dragon in the sandstone hills, but Ben Kenobi felt perfectly secure in the home he had built himself, sheltered by the cliffs from the brunt of the wind. He took out a few fresh eggs and blue milk, and some dry native herbs, and started a fire in the fireplace. Just a few minutes with a frying pan and he would have an omlette for dinner.

He reached up into a cabinet for his frying pan. Strangely, as soon as he touched it, he had the strongest sensation of being watched. Not only that, but it felt like-– it felt like Anakin. Before his fall, that is. Dinner could wait.

Ben let go of the frying pan, but the sensation started to go away. He got a good grip on the handle, and went deep into the Force. This wasn’t Anakin— this was Luke. He was, frankly, relieved at that. //Luke? Are you there?//

//Ben?//

The boy was clearly confused. Not surprising. //Yes, Luke. It’s Ben.//

Luke’s presence here went fuzzy, as if he were thinking deeply to himself. Ben could hear one thought clearly, though. It’s cadence was that of, of all people, Yoda, and it said, “Through the Force, things you will see. Other places. The future... the past. Old friends long gone.”

INDRA: Glad you liked the prologue; here comes the promised chapter one!

PASHATEMUR: Thanks wink Sometimes I'm a bit too concise for my own good, but when it works...

ARIN: wink Glad you like the fic so far... and the icon!

ALETHIA: Well, maybe you'll get a better idea of what the quote at the end of the prologue is all about in this post... wink

CHAPTER ONE

Luke’s presence appeared, for whatever reason, to be coming from Ben’s frying pan. And his last thought was something Yoda had told him! As far as Ben knew, Yoda was on Dagobah and Luke had never met him or knew anything about his Jedi heritage.

The only explanation was that this Luke was coming to him from the future, and not from the Lars moisture farm. That made sense—the presence might be coming from the frying pan because they were both using it. Why, exactly, had Luke been trained by Yoda, Ben wondered?

//You’re in my hut, using a frying pan, aren’t you, Luke?//

//Yes. This is the strangest thing yet… and I’ve been through some strange things lately.//

//I don’t doubt it. This has never happened to me before, but I can think of some things I’ve been through that were just as disconcerting. Where am I, Luke?//

//What do you mean? I assume from what you asked that you’re at home and were using your frying pan…//

//No, that’s not what I mean. Where am I in your timeframe?//

Luke felt apprehensive. //I really don’t know how to say this…//

//Out with it, Luke. What are you trying to say?//

Luke sighed through the force. //You’re dead, Ben.//

//Dead?// It ws a request for more information.

//Yes. Vader killed you… wait. You’re not surprised?//

//Not particularly.// There was more behind the question than had been asked. Luke recognized something in Ben’s answer… about Vader. //What happened, Luke? What happened to you?//

//Vader’s my father, isn’t he?//

//Yes. I didn’t tell you that, did I?//

//No! He did. You told me Vader killed my father.// Vader knew Luke lived? That explained something.

//I’m sorry about that. I’m not exactly sure why I told you that, but I have a good idea. It’s true, though… from a certain point of view.//

//A certain point of view?//

//Yes; the way we look at a situation is very powerful, Luke. Understand this, listen very carefully… Vader was once Anakin Skywalker, but he isn’t that man anymore. I doubt that man is still there. Believe me, I’ve tried to find it in him.// Luke was quiet, but it was getting through to him. //Wait. Did he try get you to come with him?// This didn’t sound good.

Luke’s presence went cold. //Yes. I refused, though//

Ben smiled. There was more to Luke Skywalker than most people ever guessed. //Well done. Impressive. I think you better tell me the whole story, though. Now.//

And Luke did.

…//So now we have to get Han back from Jabba the Hutt. And unfreeze him. I can’t leave him here when it’s my fault he got frozen in the first place!//

Hutts, Ben thought. The worst thing about Tatooine, and that’s saying a lot. Always Hutts… //And you’re meeting up with…//

//Lando Calrissian. Han’s friend, although I don’t know how glad he’ll be to see Lando.// Luke chuckled. Apparently there was more to that story than he had told Ben. It had been rushed. //And the Princess… what?//

//Nothing.// Luke and his sister had been separated for a reason, and even now that they had found each other, Ben wasn’t just going to tell Luke straight out, at least not yet. That could be dangerous for both of them. If felt strange having to second guess his older self…

It was getting late, and Ben was getting decidedly hungry. He broke an egg into the pan.

//You’re going to need more training, Luke. That training can help the Rebellion. You can use it to rescue your friend. This was no coincidence.// Definitely no coincidence. I sure hope I’ve learned enough about training a young man to resist the Dark Side at all cost… if only through seeing my errors. //We have everything we need, if it hasn’t been removed. We’ll start in the morning. Agreed?// Ben added some blue milk and the herbs into the pan.

//I want to say no and go after Han as soon as I have a half-decent plan. But you’re right. The morning.//

//Yes. In the morning.//

//If we can still hear each other…//

//Oh, I think we will. Do you see that trunk in the corner?//

//Yes, I see it.// Well, that’s lucky. I was hoping that would still be there…

//Open it in the morning. If we can’t connect, I’ll leave you instructions there.// Ben noticed his omlette was almost ready.

//Right. And thanks.//

//No thanks needed.// No, I should be thanking him!

And with that, Ben finally sat down to eat, actually smiling, and with a lot more than food to digest.

Ah...now I get it...

So in touching the same object, Ben and Luke get this connection. Hmm. I wonder if Ben knowing parts of the future will change it any. And it must be nice for Luke to be able to talk to Ben like that, unlike in his ghostly form, which doesn't stick around for long. I wonder what they're planning, too.

Anyway, I really liked this chapter. It was a good update. And I'll definitely be waiting for the next one.

Okay, new chapter here! Come and get it while it's hot off the press!

CHAPTER TWO

Luke spent the evening staring at the ceiling, trying to take in everything that he had heard. He didn’t get very far before he fell fast asleep.

When Luke woke up in the morning, the suns were shining like bright jewels into his eyes through the window. He shook the sand from his clothes (and his eyes), and remembered his strange conversation with a young Ben Kenobi as if it had been a dream. Except… it wasn’t, was it? Ben had told him to open the trunk in the corner this morning. That could wait until after a stretch and some exercise—he would run and climb among the rocks for a bit, using some of the physical control Yoda had shown him. And breakfast. Hopefully that meal wouldn’t be as eventful as the one last night.

The trunk was very dusty, but when Luke brushed the dust away, it was incredibly smooth, shiny and fluidly machined. And clear-- transparisteel. It wasn’t anything native Tatooine industry made, and of too well a make to be sold in most shops here either. The style told Luke it was at least a decade older than he was.

The hinges opened easily without a squeak. Inside Luke found: a letter; some crystals, blue and green; metals - copper, aluminum and wires. Further down there was a tiny stove of some sort, and a smaller box of wood, lovingly and delicately handtooled with glyphs in the style native to Tatooine. It was the kind of box that usually held datachips and holocrystals, and, at the bottom of the trunk, there were two changes of brown formal robes.

First the letter… written delicately in charcoal on a sheet of thin textured acrylic, the mark of a backwards planet where it was less expensive than datachips and not everyone had datachip readers.

Luke,

If we do not make contact again before it is midday by the early sun by my reckoning, I will place the letter in this trunk.

There it abruptly stopped…

//Luke?//

//I’m here, Ben. I opened the letter. Why did it stop so suddenly?//

//I haven’t finished writing it. There’s no point in finishing it, now. I’ll just put it in the trunk as is.//

//Right.// Luke folded the letter and slipped it into his belt.

//Have you opened either of the boxes?//

//No, not yet. I just saw the metalworking stuff… what’s that for?//

//Good. Don’t open the boxes yet! …or, well, don’t open them at all!

The metalworking supplies are for building your lightsaber. You’ll need a new one to practice with.// Ben chuckled. //I suppose it was inevitable, anyway. You don’t want to know how many your father went through before he made the one you got… I think he intentionally ruined them just so he could make an updated version, and to test my patience, to tell you the truth.// Without wanting to, Luke found himself laughing, too.

//I don’t know the first thing about making a lightsaber…//

//I didn’t expect you to,// Ben said dryly, //but I do, and I’ll show you if you’ll just go into a trance for a moment. You know electronics, and that’s what you need for this. But that’s just the simple part. Each Jedi’s design is different, Luke, and the best designs don’t come from logic. You have to feel them in the Force.//

//Green, eh? Well, if that’s the way you want it…//

//Hey, just because yours and Anakin’s were blue doesn’t mean mine has to be…//

//No, no! Of course not. My master always used a green crystal, actually. Both of them did…//

Luke glanced up—staring at nothing, of course, but that was the area he imagined Ben to be in. It was disconcerting to be talking to thin air… //They did? Both of them?// Luke had never heard Ben—Obi-Wan—talk about another Jedi master other than Yoda. //I’ve never seen Yoda use a lightsaber…//

//Trust me, you don’t want to get in a situation where he would use one. But when he does, he’s better than I am. He only taught me the basics. I apprenticed as a teenager under a human master named Qui-Gon Jinn.// A fleeting, sour scent of sadness and guilt came across in that thought; and a sense of love. Although it wasn’t said, a single acid thought also came across: SITH.

Apparently, Luke was broadcasting his own thoughts. //No, it wasn’t Vader, Luke. He wasn’t that strong in the Force. But he was well trained in combat, and we were unprepared. He used a strange but effective technique… knowing the use of a lightsaber is important. It’s not the only thing, though.//

Luke thought about his encounter with Vader on Bespin. He agreed wholeheartedly, and continued to put his lightsaber together.

The green crystal floated in the air, and copper wires wove a tapestry around it. When that was done, Luke bent sheets of aluminum carefully around it, connected the wiring, and finished off various switches on the outside. It all seemed to bend and stretch as he made it with an otherworldly vibration, a living resonance that shifted frequencies as it came together. By the time he was done, it was dark outside again, although it hadn’t seemed very long at all. Luke pressed the button and ignited his own saber for the first time. He hardly needed to see the green glow to know it was working: the music of it’s hum was a delight.

And Luke makes his lightsaber. Cool. I liked how Obi-Wan explained it to him as well as the mentions of Qui Gon Jinn. And Obi-Wan's joking about Anakin's going through lightsabers was also humourous as well. Thanks for the update, I really liked it. And now I'm really starting to wonder where you're going to go with this...
