Title: The Son of Skywalker
Author: VaderLVR64
Timeframe: Post ANH
Characters: Darth Vader
Summary: Darth Vader discovers he has a son.
Notes: I’ve written a scene where Vader discovers he has a son. But much more of Anakin than Vader showed through in that one. Inspired by the delicious pictures of ROTS Anakin, this is a slightly different take on the moment. And I took out the spoilers. So it is spoiler free, unless you don't know that Darth Vader is Luke's father.
The Son of Skywalker
“Skywalker?” I roared the name. It was a name from a past I had chosen to forget, a past that was laced with bitterness.
My rage at my former master welled up within me, threatening to choke me with its intensity. And now I discovered that yet again he had betrayed me.
Obi-Wan Kenobi… I hissed name in my mind. Every syllable of it was hateful to me, an anathema. I had thought my dealings with the treacherous old Jedi over and done when my blade struck him down. I had known a sweet, dark joy at his death and in my meting out of long overdue justice.
But now, even after death, he had come back to haunt me, to mock me. I could almost hear his soft laughter as he savored his final victory over me.
He had stolen my son.
It was the last thing he had taken from me, and the most painful. My son…
No wonder he had looked at me with triumph gleaming in his eyes even as my blade shed a crimson glow on his aged face. They had shone with secrecy, a victory carefully concealed in those faded blue depths. Only now did I understand his last words to me and that momentary glance at the young boy rushing toward the pirate’s ship.
His power over me was stronger than death.
I cursed his name aloud, wishing I had him before me once more so that he could die again – but very slowly. So slowly that time would stop and he would cry out in his agony. I wanted to hear the unending scream that would wash over me, soothing me with its fury.
But once again my impatience had been tested by my old master, and once again I had failed. I wondered if he realized that in those last moments, as he looked at me wrapped in his cursed serenity.
How I hated that peace he attained so effortlessly!
I had despised it when I learned at his side, and I loathed it even more the day I took his life. No matter, the old man was dead and I was still alive.
And there was hope in that. His triumph would prove empty after all.
My son was not completely beyond my reach. Kenobi’s triumph would be short-lived. I would find Luke and I would show him what old Obi-Wan could not, what he had hidden from
me
for so long.
My son would feel the seductive lure of the Dark Side; he would listen to its song. How could he not? He was his father’s son, my son.
And the son of Skywalker could be turned, just as the father had been.
Father and son; together we would be undefeatable. No one, not even the Emperor, could stand against us. Two minds in complete accord, our power joined and magnified by the dark bond between us. Blood and determination would seal our vows.
I felt some of my anger drain from me as I considered how it would have broken the old man’s spirit to know that his last great hope would soon be as dark as his father. It would have crushed him far more effectively than death, and I knew another moment of longing for him to be here, alive and aware so that I could taunt him with the knowledge of what was to come.
Conviction flooded my being.
Luke Skywalker was a vast reservoir of power and abilities. But he was young and untrained. He would have anger in his heart. What youth did not? It was a season of rage and strong emotion. And I would use his anger, bring it to the surface and goad it. I would nurture it as I did my own. I would tend to it carefully until it consumed him. It would be so easily tapped.
It only took one fissure in the wall, I knew that only too well. One tiny crack to let the darkness seep in for the very first time. A few drops of darkness that would become a trickle and the shadows inside him would grow and fester. The darkness would overtake the light and Luke would become what it was his destiny to be.
And then I would claim my son for all to see, crushing the last, dead dream of my old Master.
Father and son would rule the galaxy, side by side.
“You lost old man,” I told him, though he was not there to hear me. He was gone and I remained; it was victory enough for now.
I would find Luke and I would show him what true power was, and he would embrace it as I had.
I ignored the softly mocking laughter that my imagination said echoed behind me.

Excellent vignette! Your way with words is excellent. Humanizing Vader is always a good thing, especially with such depth. Good job!

I liked this one, very dark.

And what it all comes down to is that I haven't got it figured out just yet.
Would I rather be feared or loved? Um... Easy, both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.

*shivers* Oh, you've outdone yourself with this one, K.
I could almost see Vader fuming, throwing a tantrum of sorts, angry because Obi-Wan had the "last word."
I cursed his name aloud, wishing I had him before me once more so that he could die again – but very slowly. So slowly that time would stop and he would cry out in his agony. I wanted to hear the unending scream that would wash over me, soothing me with its fury.
*shivers again* Definitely feeling the evil and the hatred here.
But once again my impatience had been tested by my old master, and once again I had failed. I wondered if he realized that in those last moments, as he looked at me wrapped in his cursed serenity.
I though this part spoke volumes about their tumultous relationship as Padawan and Master, and it delves into the pain and animosity that lingered after that relationship was torn apart.
Bravo, K!

A long time ago in a house far away, there was a mother who was strong in the ways of the Force.
She "forced" her sons to clean their room, she "forced" her sons to behave.

Thank you! I was feeling dark at the time.

Yes, Anakin's temper still shows through the armor a bit, doesn't it? Poor Vader, never gets the last word in and now Obi's dead so he never will!

I read this last night and didn't get a chance to respond. It was really beautiful in its dark tone and emotions.
I cursed his name aloud, wishing I had him before me once more so that he could die again – but very slowly. So slowly that time would stop and he would cry out in his agony. I wanted to hear the unending scream that would wash over me, soothing me with its fury.

Wonderful, once again, VaderLVR!
I love the way you keep returning to have Vader curse out isolated statements of hatred about what Obi-wan did to him:
He had stolen my son...
...His power over me was stronger than death...
...How I hated that peace he attained so effortlessly!
Very powerful - and emotional.
As always,

Whoa!
His hatred of Obi-Wan really shines through this. As do his hopes of turning Luke. But I think Luke might have something to say about that!
