Notes: Well... it's been a long time since I've been here. It seems RotS has worked it's unique magic and called me back to this place. And I'm rather delighted to be back! Please note the Spoiler warning. RotS is spoiled quite a bit within this story, from a certain point of view, anyway.

His dreams haunted him. By day, he could ignore them and focus his mind on other matters, keeping his thoughts occupied. But when he closed his eyes to rest, a whole new world revealed itself to him. A world that terrified him.
Sometimes he would return to Tatooine, the wild, churning sands whirling around him even more violently than he remembered them. The twin suns beat down on his form with the well-known cruelty of the planet’s high noon. He could see the farm that had been the only home he had ever known in the distance, being maintained by the various worker droids under his uncle’s stern directions.
He could see his aunt, working contentedly within the house. He knew her thoughts were on fixing one of her fryers and on what to make for the evening meal. He’d promised to repair that fryer for her when he came back from his trip…
Stormtroopers were everywhere. They pushed furniture aside irritably as they searched the compound. His uncle yelled indignantly at their commander, demanding they leave his property immediately, his aunt a silent and firm presence behind him.
Fire. The farm was burning, the thick smoke overpowering the light dust kicked up by the retreating transport the stormtroopers had arrived in.
Screams. Someone was screaming. No… more than one…loud, agonizing screams…
Other times, he saw the Death Star battle. Fighters from both sides engulfed in flames as they were shot down. One by one, their lives were snuffed out and his grief grew within him. Whether they were of the Rebellion or the Empire, a part of him did not care. Every one of them had been some mother’s son, or some girl’s brother. Somewhere in the galaxy was someone who had just lost a loved one.
He saw his fighter flying speedily away from the doomed station, accompanied by the few surviving members of the attack wings and the Corellian freighter that had saved them all. Looking back the way he had come, he saw the Death Star explode in a blaze as bright as Yavin itself.
And it was as though the stars themselves wept with both sorrow and relief.
He never told anyone of his dreams, keeping them to himself. He knew he was not the only one who was troubled by nightmares of the past. Many of his friends comrades were plagued as well, accounting for the dark circles around their eyes. Markings that matched his own all too well.
And these dreams, while the most frequent, were not the worst of those that dominated his weary mind. Oh, there was one that left him waking in a cold sweat, his pale cheeks streaked with tears of rage and misery…
Fire. A planet made of fire, it always appeared to be. The barren, dead surface was pitted with craters as well as what looked like fountains and rivers of molten lava. A thick steam rose up, engulfing the area in a sinister fog and greatly obscuring his vision. But he could still see shadows moving about just out of his reach. Shadows and two faintly glowing blue shafts of light.
How did my father die?
He could see so little of what was going on, but the mists did not obscure the deadly dance that was being performed amidst the violent rumblings of a young world. The two lightsaber beams crashed against one another viciously, almost seeming as though they wished never to part from one another.
And the voices. They were clear enough that he could understand most of what was said, but indistinguishable beyond that.
“You were… destroy the Sith, not join them! It was you… in darkness!”
“I hate you!”
“You were my brother… I loved you!”
The mists thickened and he could see nothing further. Even the brilliant glow of the lightsabers was beyond his sight. All that was left now was the terrible heat and the howls of agony that seemed to rip at the very fabric of his frightened mind.
But even those did not last and were superseded by a sound he recalled only faintly, but still knew all too well.
Mechanized breathing.
“Boss? You okay?”
Luke’s eyes flew open, his chest heaving rapidly. He quickly took in his surroundings and after a brief moment, recognized the cockpit of his X-wing. Slowly, he reached out to his comm and spoke.
“I’m here, Hobbie. It seems we’re here.”
“Yeah, and it ain’t much to look at. Command really knows how to pick ‘em.”
A small grin erupted on his lips and he laughed. “I know. But just think about it… would the Empire really think to look for us on this ice cube?”
“Nah… I suppose not. They wouldn’t think we’d be that stupid. Too bad, we are.”
“Come on, Hobbie. Let’s do a bit of scouting before we turn back,” Luke instructed before switching several controls for atmospheric flight. He was right. Hoth would be the last place for the Empire to look for the Alliance after abandoning Yavin IV.
He did his best to concentrate on the task before him, but some part of his mind still remembered his dreams. It was difficult to forget them… and the voice of his mentor, telling him the horrible, damning truth.
“The young Jedi named Darth Vader… helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights.
"He betrayed and murdered your father.”

It's all lovely, but that's got to be my favorite part. Trust Luke to remember that truth.

Lovely. I love the way you've presented Luke's perspective. It makes me feel tired just reading it, along with Luke from the nightmares. Dreams like that would be very wearying, especially when you're not particularly sure where they come from.

Gabri: It's good to see you too, sweetie! Given Luke's general sensitivity, I always thought that these sort of thoughts would be going on in the back of his mind during that battle, most especially when Biggs was killed. Perhaps it didn't come forth until later, but I always thought they would be there.

Great to see you around the SW front again! And my, with such a wonderful viggie, too! I loved it!
I love the sense you get if it being told through dreams, how they all just flow together seamlessly to end on those last horrible moments of Mustafar. How that in turns ties back to what Obi-Wan first says about Anakin in ANH. Wonderfully told.

Wow! I loved it. I'm glad to see that ROTS is bringing back some of those who used to haunt these boards.
I'm a relatie newbie, and I like seeing some of the more experienced talent come back!

Bri: *is tackled* BRI!!!!! So good to see you in this neighborhood as well, m'dear! I will say that this little viggie was inspired when I was sitting in the movie theatre, watching RotS. I kept thinking about it on the walk home, and within a few days, I had opened up a file and started typing. I was very relieved to find a script online, as I don't have a good enough memory to remember the lines as they were said just yet. I'll need to sit through it at least five more times before I can do that. And I did my best to leave the scene on Mustafar as open-to-interpretation as possible. We know what really happened, and the Force appears to be showing Luke, but he's looking at it with Obi-Wan's words flowing through his mind. Kind of hard to think objectively, huh?
VaderLVR64: *blushes* Thank you so much! And it most certainly was RotS that brought me back to the boards. I'd thought my days as a SW fanfic writer had come to an end, but when the bunny for this story took up residence in my head, it refused to leave until it had its very own penthouse apartment... plot bunnies are so demanding these days! Not officially a lurker as I just discovered your opus. I really like how you integrated Luke's dream sequence with what happened to him on the Death Star and then visions from the past between Obi-Wan and his father. Great post, can't wait for the next one!
