In the Service of the Chancellor

Rix Cletris. The top of his class at the Republic Academy, a loyal husband to a wonderful wife, and the proud father of two great boys. But if someone were to ask Rix what his proudest accomplishment was, he would tell them none of these things. He would tell them that he was a Royal Guardsmen, one of the few elite troopers who were assigned as the personal bodyguards of Supreme Chancellor Dantius Palpatine himself.

Rix Cletris was, as were all Royal Guardsmen, or “Red Guards” as they were commonly referred, almost exactly six feet in height, had an athletic build, was extremely agile, contained above average intelligence and, most importantly, was fiercely loyal to the Republic and its Chancellor. When on duty, he wore the typical uniform of his kind; flowing red robes, scarlet gloves, a highly polished crimson helmet with a deep black visor, and a silver force pike in his right hand. Very intimidating to any who might try to harm the Chancellor.

But intimidation wasn’t the only purpose of the Royal Guards. Each was hand-picked from the Grand Army of the Republic, or at least the small percentage that was not made up of clones. The Red Guards were more advanced than even the best of the clones; random human genetics could produce far better solders than genetically engineered ones. The Royal Guards had reflexes far greater than that of the average human, reflexes that were even faster due to years of honing at the hidden Royal Guard Academy, whose location was known to less than a thousand individuals galaxy-wide. Red Guards were the elite of the elite, trained in dozens a forms of martial arts, and as good with a force pike as many Jedi were with a lightsaber.

And yet, even with all of these skills at their disposal, none of the Red Guards relaxed a single bit as they rode in the large speeder being used to transport Chancellor Palpatine to his hidden bunker. Besides the Supreme Chancellor himself, the speeder held eight Royal Guards, Rix among them, four Jedi knights, and the pilot himself, who was doing a great job steering the large speeder through the hallways of the enormous bunker complex.

The wide tunnel they were using was guarded by dozens of republic solders, most cloned but some otherwise, guarding the main entrance to the inner bunker. With the Separatist Droid armies, under the command of the fierce cyborg leader General Grievous, trying to invade the planet, no risks could be taken whatsoever. Grievous himself, along with two of his elite MagnaGuard bodyguards, had tried to kidnap Palpatine less than an hour before when they were riding to the bunker complex on a maglev train. Luckily four Jedi Masters had been helping the Red Guards to escort the chancellor, and two of them had managed to defeat the MagnaGuards, and chase Grievous away. Those two were now in pursuit of the cyborg General.

The other two Jedi Masters were supposed to have been coming right behind the speeder, but they were nowhere to be seen. They had sent the four Jedi Knights, a male human, female twi’lek, male Talz, and male Ithorian, along ahead of them, but had remained in the docking bay to give the Jedi Temple an update of their progress.

When the speeder was about halfway to the inner bunker, the human Jedi’s commlink started beeping. He switched it to “Receive,” and spoke into the transmitter, “Hello.”

Rix Cletris, who was sitting next to the human in the large speeder, could hear every word of the conversation. “This is Shaak Ti,” the voice at the other end send. “It appears that the escort Gunship was being commandeered by Grievous. It opened fire on the Chancellor’s Gunship as soon as he had departed. Master Allie is alive, but unconscious. I’ll get there as soon as I can, but be careful.”

“Yes, Master Ti, we will be wary.”

“May the Force be with you. May it be with us all.” The Human switched off the comlink, reattached it to his belt, and relayed the situation to the rest of those in the speeder. The pilot pushed the speeder to its limit, and they continued to speed towards the private bunker.

Seconds later, the speeder’s commute beeped. Rix, who was also sitting next to the pilot, picked it up.

“Chancellor’s Guard,” he said into the receiver.

“This is Lieutenant Grann of Coruscant Security. General Grievous and six of his bodyguards are proceeding down the building. My men are doing-” Rix heard the sound of an electronic weapon searing through human flesh and knew that Lieutenant Grann was dead. A second later he heard the sound of metal hitting metal as the officer’s comlink hit the ground.

“How much longer?” Rix asked the pilot.

The speeder made another turn into another large hallway which was angled slightly downward, and the pilot pointed to a large blast door at the other end. “That’s it right there. Just a few more seconds.”

The large speeder hadn’t even come to a complete halt next to the door, before the octet of crimson-clad bodyguards had leapt out of the speeder. Rix, being the head of the small group spoke to the others using a series of barely visible finger movements on his left hand. The Royal Guards, quickly following his directions, assumed positions without hesitation. Six of them made a line of red in front of the speeder, in order to block any stray blaster bolts that might unexpectedly come down the hallway. Another red Guard opened Palpatine’s door as soon as the speeder was completely stopped next to the bunker entrance, and Rix himself stood next to the hexagonal bunker door, entering access codes into the door’s control panel.

As soon as the door slid open, the eight Red Guards were once again surrounding Palpatine, making it so that none of the nearby solders could so much as get a glimpse of the Supreme Chancellor. The wall of crimson robes moved with the Chancellor himself, escorting Palpatine into the bunker. Once the Supreme Chancellor was safely inside, and the four Jedi Knights with him, Rix turned around and took a few brisk strides back out into the corridor. He pointed to a group of ten clone troopers who were, along with the help of three non-cloned solders, guarding the bunker entrance. “You,” the red guard pointed over his shoulder. “Into the bunker.” The clones obeyed orders without question, something that Rix greatly admired, and followed him into the inner bunker.

The room itself was circular in shape, with only two entrances, one into the large corridor from which they had arrived, and the other on the exact opposite side. A large desk had been placed in the very center of the room, and an array of computer consoles, most designed for communication purposes, took up most of the wall space of the large room. Once everyone was safely inside the sanctuary, Rix hit a button on the inner control panel and the door slammed shut with a sharp “hiss.” Rix quickly examined the door, and was pleased to find that it was resistant not only to almost any form of blaster fire, but also to both radiation and to electromagnetic pulse. Unfortunately, it would not be resistant to lightsabers, and Grievous was known to carry at least four with him at almost any given time.

“My lord, I would suggest that you retreat to the rear wall of the room,” Rix said to the Chancellor as he gestured to the back of the round bunker. Palpatine gave a nod of agreement and calmly took a position next to the rear wall. Rix had to admire his courage: even knowing that the murderer of dozens of Jedi Knights was on his way, Palpatine didn’t show any sign of fear. A great leader if Rix had ever seen one, and one he would be proud to give his life for. Hopefully, this day would not amount to that.

Rix next turned to the Jedi Knights. He wasn’t sure if they would comply with his directions, but they were all on the same side, so they most likely would. “I want you four standing on the right side of the room,” the Royal Guard ordered. “As soon as Grievous enters the room, I believe it would be best if you four confronted him.”

“Agreed,” the human male said. The four Jedi walked around the desk, and stood at the side of the room that was Palpatine’s left, which would be Grievous’s right as he entered the room.

Rix then directed, through hand signals and verbal commands, the Royal Guardsmen and the Clones to form a semicircle around Palpatine. It would be up to them to fight off the six bodyguards Grievous was reportedly bringing with him. Although the troopers in the corridors might be able to take out one or two of the MagnaGuards, it was unlikely considering that the extremely advanced droids had been known to defeat even Jedi in one-on-one combat. They could take no chances.

Rix and another Guard stood at the head of the arc, closest to the hexagonal blast door. Another Royal Guard stood to each side of them, and next to them on either side of the arc, were three clones, then two more Guards, and finally two more clones. Rix’s goal was not to create a defensive line in front of the chancellor, for the best defense for that would’ve been two smaller arcs, one of clones and the other of Red Guards. But Grievous wanted the Chancellor alive, and so this would give them the best chance against his bodyguards, while the Jedi would take on the General himself.

All too soon, Rix heard the sound of blaster fire echoing down the corridor outside. The three guards were quickly silenced and the sound of their blaster fire was replaced by that of metallic footsteps. Grievous and his MagnaGuards had arrived. If only Masters Ti and Allie were hear, Rix might’ve been a little more confident in their success. Grievous was known to be able to defeat multiple Jedi Knights in battle, and he only hoped that the four Jedi Knights in the bunker would be enough to defeat the cyborg.

Everyone in the room tensed, except Palpatine himself, who didn’t seem the least bit worried, and forty-six ears listened for the sound of lightsabers searing through the hexagonal blast door. But no lightsaber hissing came. The only hiss came from the door itself, as it opened to reveal the intimidating form of General Grievous, standing centered in front of the door. Somehow, Grievous had know the bunker’s access codes, but there was no time for Rix to ponder this now. Behind the droid General stood five of his elite MagnaGuards, electrostaffs at the ready. At least the troopers had taken down one of the six, but five were more than enough for Rix to know that he would have to fight his best, not that he ever even considered fighting any other way.

Rix flipped the switch on his force pike as seven others did the same around him. To Rix’s left, four Jedi lightsabers ignited, and the Clones all released their blaster’s safeties and took aim at the droids. Ten sapphire blaster bolts flew at Grievous, but the General’s arms moved so fast that they were only blurs, even to Rix’s trained eyes. His two durasteel hands managed to deflect each of the ten blaster bolts seemingly effortlessly, before they reached down on his belt and grabbed two of the lightsabers waiting there.

The four Jedi wasted no time charging at the droid leader, and the General leaped out of the doorway to meet them halfway. Through the corner of his visor, Rix could see that the Jedi were putting up little resistance against the cyborg, whose pair of blue and green lightsabers moved quickly to block each of their attacks. But the Red Guards payed the saber battle no attention. Their focus was on the five metallic monsters that filed in the door behind their General, moving towards the Chancellor’s arc of defense.

Each of the MagnaGuards were armed with a dual-tipped electrostaff. The electrostaff was a metal pole-like weapon not all that different from the Red Guard’s force pikes. On each of its ends was a triangular piece of silver-white metal, from which purple electricity radiated.

And then they moved. Nearly as fast as their leader, the MagnaGuard’s movements were blurred as they leapt through the air. They left the Chancellor’s protectors no time to think, but that was quite alright. The Royal Guardsmen weren’t trained to think, they were trained to know. Rix allowed his superior reflexes to take control, and his battle-orientated brain knew exactly what to do nearly as soon as his eyes gave it the information it needed.

The Clone troopers attempted to fire blaster bolts at the MagnaGuards, but the metal humanoids’ electostaffs caught each of the blue specs of light that came near them. Rix eliminated the rest of the battle from his thoughts. He was vaguely aware that clone troopers were quickly falling and that other of Grievous’s elites were confronting his own comrades, but he forced his mind to concentrate on the single MagnaGuard closest to him.

The droid raised his electrostaff and slashed from his right to his left, aimed at cutting Rix in half. But the Royal Guardsman had already saw the attack coming, and his force pike was already there to block the attack. At the same time, his right foot was off the ground, his body weight shifting to give it more power. But his droid foe had seen this coming and leapt up into the air, doing a somersault to bring his electrostaff into a stab at Rix. The Red Guard pivoted on his right leg, bringing him around to the Magnaguard’s side, where he delivered a sharp kick to the droid’s hip. The durasteel there dented only slightly, but the guard didn’t seem to have noticed.

Beside Rix, another Red Guard came to his aide against their metal opponent. His electrostaff was a purple blur through the air, as it deflected each of the attacks of both Guards’ force pikes. Finally, as Rix used his force pike, which he now held in only his left hand, to block the bodygaurd’s attacks, he spied a weakness in the droid’s defense. When the moment came, Rix let his knees bend so that he was about two centimeters shorter, and his right hand reached out to grab onto the handle of the electrostaff. The maneuver worked and, as Rix and the Magnaguard fought over the weapon, the other Guard managed to slash through the droid’s abdomen with his force pike, splitting the droid into two pieces, both of which fell with a clatter to the bunker’s floor.

Rix glanced around the room, looking for another opponent. Only four clones remained, and three red-robed bodies were also lying on the ground. All appeared to have been killed by electrical burns and stabs from the MagnaGuards’ electrostaffs. Of Grievous’s bodyguards, however, the only one to have been destroyed was the one Rix had been fighting. The other four had various dents, cuts, and lost limbs, but they were all still active and fighting.

Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted the upper half of the “destroyed” Magnaguard leap at the Red Guard who had been fighting alongside Rix. The Royal Guard noticed this though, and managed to dodge it just in time. The droid, using its arms as legs, turned itself for another launch at the Guardsman, but this time the Red Guard delivered the droid a sharp punch in the head, followed by a stab right through the center. The Guard then turned around to battle a MagnaGuard who was taking out the few remaining clones, and Rix turned to find his own battle to join.

Around the room, the other four Red Guards were all doing poorly against the four MagnaGuards, but had taken defensive stances and were at least keeping themselves alive. The droids, on the other hand, seemed to be anticipating the moves of the Guards, as well as the patterns of the lone remaining clone’s blaster fire. Out of the four electronic bodyguards, only one seemed to be completely unharmed, minus a slight dent to his right shoulder. Rix leapt his way around the other duels to the spot where this MagnaGuard was fighting a Guardsmen, not far from the spot where General Grievous was toying with the two remaining Jedi.

The two Red Guards fought well together against the outnumbered MagnaGuard. As the sound of blaster fire finally ceased with the death of the last Clone, Rix spun his force pike in a circle in front of him making an effective barrier. The MagnaGuard used the best possible move to stop this defense, which was a simple stab to cease the rotation. But Rix had expected this, as had his partner, who slashed out at the droid with his force pike, effectively removing the droid’s right arm.

Rix intensified his fighting style until he was putting his full effort into the death of this droid. His limbs were a crimson blur through the air, attacking so fast that the droid had to use his electrostaff, held by his only hand, to block each of these attacks. Although the droid’s weapon met with Rix’s force pike several times, it didn’t touch his legs or arms once, for to do so would’ve meant certain death.

The other Red Guard managed to deliver a sharp kick to the MagnaGuard, which seemed to have disabled the function of his right leg. The droid was momentarily thrown off balance and, although it quickly recovered, it was not quick enough. Rix’s comrade used his force pike to slash off the droid’s head, but Rix didn’t slow his attack. His right arm came up and under the MagnaGuard’s weapon, and a quick pull knocked the electrostaff out of the hands of its owner. The other Red Guard rolling kicked with his right leg, tripping the MagnaGuard who was already operating on just a single leg. Before the droid had even hit the ground, Rix had jumped over his falling body, stabbed his force pike through the Guard’s back, and pulled it out again.

And it was a good think he did, for it was at that moment that Grievous defeated the last of the Jedi Knights, the female Twi’lek, and turned his attention to the Royal Guardsmen. Rix was the closest.

Rix, almost without thinking, feinted to the left, and then quickly pivoted to the right, as he raised his force pike, held in both hands, to the level of Grievous’ face. Perhaps the MagnaGuards could function without their heads, but the same could not be said for their General. Grievous was a cyborg, and thus he still had a brain. A quick decapitation from Rix’s staff would be the only thing that could bring the General down for good.

But Grievous was too fast, and his electronic reflexes were even greater than Rix’s, which was not an easy feat. Rix tried to turn to the General’s new direction, but his force pike had been heading in the complete opposite direction. And as he pulled his force pike leftward towards the cyborg’s head yet again, Grievous’ two lightsabers came at Rix’s own from either side. His force pike was held in nothing even closely resembling a defensive position, and in that moment, Rix knew he was going to die.

He did not think about the grief it would cause his poor wife, or the fact that his boys would be growing up without a father. He did not think of the fact that he had finally been defeated in combat, or of the fact that the Republic was no doubt doomed. His only regret was that he had failed the Chancellor, that he had allowed this monster to be in a position to capture the Republic’s wonderful leader. Rix’s only consolation was the fact that he had died in glorious combat. And then Grievous’ two lightsabers pierced his neck, and Rix Cletris was no more.

A very nice look at a peripheral character... I thought for a moment he was one who met Yoda, but I'm more sympatheic to the fate he did land with.

Yay, replies!

VadersMistress: Thanks. I was sad that he had to die too, but I wanted it to be canonical and well, I couldn't really have him beat General Grievous. I'm glad you liked it, thanks again.

Healer Leona: Thanks, and I know what you mean. I liked the red guards better when they were on the same side as the jedi.

Good job.

I've never ventured into this part of fanfic. About time, I know.

I liked that your OC was a Royal Guard. It's good to know that they were not like the clones but still like them in their dedication to the Emperor.

What did we really know about them anyway? I only knew that my husband had a costume one year for halloween. That was it.

Oh and a reference in EU during the resurfacing of Thrawn. I believe it was a cloned version of the guardsman.

Anyway, sort of getting off track. Death is tragic. And your OC accepted his death like many others in service to the ones they believed in (however misplaced their belief might be).

Very believable.

Thanks, Lola64. This is my first Red Guard FanFic (Written or Read) too, so this was sort of a new topic for me as well. I guess that's why they call it a Challenge.

I'm glad you thought the character was good. I wish I had a Royal Guard costume, I like their "outfit," for lack of a better word. Thanks for the reply.

Happy Lurker Appriciation Week everyone. In honor of this, I've decided to write a message to the lurkers, which I'm posting at the bottom of my stories (as you can see).

First, I'd like to thank you all for taking the time to read, and I hope you enjoyed what I've written. Nothing makes me happier than knowing that something I wrote brighted up someone's day. Every time that I see that I have a reply, it brings joy to my heart. So that's why I wanted to tell any lurkers not to be afraid to reply. Even if it's just a "Good Job" or "I liked it" or a smiley face, it's much better than nothing. You don't have to write an essay as a reply, just something to let me know that you're reading.

Or, if you'd rather not post, you can always send me a PM. It would be much appriciated, whether it's just a single word or a long discussion. If you really don't like to reply or send PMs, or if you haven't joined the site, feel free to send me an e-mail at BrianNight3@hotmail.com Whatever way you choose to comment, it will make me extatic to know that people are actually reading what I wright. So don't be afraid, we're all friends here and we'd love to have you join in this wonderful community.

If you're not sure what to write, anything at all works. It's the thought that counts, not the length or way it's written. Any comment at all is greatly appriciated. If you'd like to ask a question about anything in the story, that would be great too, and I'll do the best I can to answer it. Whether it's something you didn't understand, or just something about the characters or events you'd like to know, I'd be more than happy to reply in any form you'd like (post, PM, e-mail). If you can't think of any comments or questions, you can always just tell me what you liked or disliked about the story. Maybe who your favorite character was, or what part you found interesting. Anything at all would be great. Even constructive critisism is welcome. After all, if I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I can't fix it.

So please don't hesitate to post, PM, or e-mail me a reply. Authors, myself included, truly appriciate your feedback. Without readers, a story would only be words on a piece of paper (or in this case webpage). So don't be afraid, and don't hesitate. In whatever way you like best, please send me a reply. I'd be extremely grateful, and would be incredibly happy to know that there are people who like what I wright. For fun, I'm putting a little picture at the bottom of this post, and I'll add one for each episode for the rest of the week. The near-quote is hard to read, so I'll post the caption below it as well. Once again, thank you all for reading, and good luck in the delurking process. And remember: the Force will be with you, Always.

Sincerely,
Lord Zeron

Thanks, I'm glad you liked the pics and the story. Actually, I know very little about Royal Guardsmen other than what I've seen in the movies and seen from them in Labrynth of Evil and what I read about them on Answers.com and their Star Wars Databank entry. If he reminds you of Kir Kanos though, that can only be a good thing.

Thanks for the reply! And sorry I haven't been on much lately, I've had A LOT of schoolwork. I'll try to drop by whenever I can though.
