Title: Halfway Moment
Author(s): Shaindl
Timeframe: TPM-ROTS
Characters: Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Anakin
Genre: drama
Keywords:
Summary: Qui-Gon Jinn must atone for the choices he made in the past and the harm those decisions brought to the ones he loved most.
Notes: To OE and Indra betaing. I'm lucky to have you guys.
Also thanks to OE for helping me find the ROTS screenplay online.
They belong to George. If they belonged to us, oh, the things we could do...
Didn't expect to write another Qui/Obi story, but here we go. Never say never.
Had this bunny bite a while ago, but I'm only getting to it now, and I have no idea where it's going. I'm also writing as I go so I can't promise updates on a regular basis, though I will try for at least once a week. I missed posting something, so I thought I'd just jump in, in honour of Lurkers Week. Come on out and say hi, lurkers! I don't bite! (...much...)
Hope you all enjoy it.

Halfway Moment
Every great mistake has a halfway moment, a split second when it can be recalled and perhaps remedied.
Pearl S. Buck
* * * * * *
Prologue
“He will bring…balance.”
The words died on his lips as his breath died in his chest. And as he heard and felt Obi-Wan cry over him, Qui-Gon Jinn wondered, deep in his mind where he had taken his consciousness, if betrayal could kill as easily as a lightsabre blade.
* * * * * *
“Where will you go?”
“I don’t know. But I will contact you when I’ve made a base for myself.”
Jedi Masters Qui-Gon Jinn and Mace Windu stood atop the Naboo palace and fell silent as they stared at the dwindling specks that were the Republic ships returning to Coruscant. It was another holo-perfect Naboo day, the sky a deep blue with no clouds in sight. The street far below was still strewn with the confetti and streamers from the victory parade the day before that they had both watched from one of the spires that soared over the city. Droids scurried around, trying to clean it all up.
He closed his eyes and ran a hand over his beard. One day since the parade. Three days since he had betrayed his Padawan.
Gradually, he became aware that Mace was still speaking. “…you made it easy on us, Qui-Gon. You did everything right. No mistakes.”
Which meant everything had gone according to the vision Master Yoda had had and the plan he, Qui-Gon and Mace had worked out after. He had been impaled by the Sith and had collapsed. His Padawan – his shining, bright, strong Padawan – had killed it. Qui-Gon had ‘died’ in his Padawan’s arms. And then his Padawan had bowed to duty and left his Master’s body in the reactor chamber while he attended to securing the queen’s safety, seeing to Anakin and reporting to the Council.
That had left plenty of time for the Naboo medical team to come in and switch his body with the false corpse that had long since been prepared and take the real Qui-Gon to the Naboo medical centre where the head Jedi healer waited.
All that was left to ask was the one question he didn’t want to voice. He was grateful his hood was pulled up. “And Obi-Wan?”
“Devastated, though he tried his best not to show it.”
“He’ll never forgive me.”
“This is to ensure the survival of the Order. He will understand.”
“I betrayed him and everything we built together.”
“Do you doubt Master Yoda’s vision?”
Qui-Gon’s shoulders slumped. There was the crux of everything. “No. I do not.”
“Do you have any ideas we didn’t explore?”
“No. None.”
“Then you know this was the only choice we had, as painful as it may be.” Mace's voice took the tone of a teacher in front of his initiates. “Release your negative feelings. You are following the will of the Force.”
A spike of irritation and pain and grief shot through Qui-Gon. “Don’t lecture me, Mace. I have done what was required. I have paid the price the Force asked.”
He looked down, towards the sparkling river that ran at the base of the cliff the palace sat on. It would almost have been easier if the Sith had killed him.
“He did you proud.” Mace’s voice broke the dark turn his thoughts were taking.
“He always has.”
From the corner of his eye, he saw the other Master dip his head in agreement. “He gave Yoda an ultimatum.”
“An ultimatum?”
“Said he would train the boy with or without the Council’s approval,” Mace hesitated, knowing his next words would hurt Qui-Gon, “because it was his last promise to you.”
A sudden gust of wind blew Qui-Gon’s hood back and when Mace turned to look at him, he was shocked to find trails of tears tracking down the Jedi’s face. Never, not when his nose was broken, not when Tahl died, not even when Xanatos turned, had he seen Qui-Gon cry. For the first time he wondered if they had truly done the right thing. “Qui-”
“Do not say a word. There is nothing you can say that will make this all right.”
“He will understand.”
When Qui-Gon rounded on him, Mace flinched away from the terrible anger and pain that were visible there. “Do you truly know so little of loyalty? Of caring?” His voice dropped to a ragged whisper. “Of love?”
Mace fumbled for words. “It was necessary. The Sith are starting to make their move. You will be needed.”
“There will never be a day when Obi-Wan will forgive me.”
“He too serves the Force.” The conviction that was there in the words did not carry through to Mace’s voice.
“Our lives have been full of nothing but betrayal. He was betrayed by me, me – or so I thought – by him, him by the Order…it has been a never-ending cycle. But nothing rivals letting him think I am dead.”
Qui-Gon turned away, lifting his head to stare at the spot where the Republic ships had disappeared. His hair streamed around him, blowing in the freshened wind.
All of it now a blazing, blinding white.

I can't tell you how excited I am about this,
Shaindl
. Such a wonderful premise, and an emotional start. I loved how the depth of Qui-Gon's sorrow at what he had to do turned his hair completely white. The whole thing was poetic.
Amazing, and absolutely can't wait for more.

He's alive!!
Can you tell I'm a big Qui-Gon Fan?
I'm sure Obi-Wan will forgive him, he might be a bit annoyed, but he'll forgive him!
Is this yet another "Brilliant Plan" of Yoda's? I hope this one works!

Oh, she's back! And what a lovely idea it is. I loved that Qui-Gon realizes just how betrayed Obi-Wan is going to be when he finds out about this. I loved that his hair turned white - almost in grief for what he is doing.
Great job.

He did what? He's alive? Obi-Wan? Oh no!!! Anikan! Oh no!
*still stuttering*
Hi again Shaindl, blatant plugs not only welcome but followed up on
I have no idea where you're going with this (although I have some vague suspicions about the content of Yoda's vision..)but I desperately want to find out! What can justify this?
I loved the interaction between Mace and Qui-Gon:
“Do you truly know so little of loyalty? Of caring?” His voice dropped to a ragged whisper. “Of love?”
A quick showcase of the problems with the current Jedi Order?
Your potrayal of the complicated relationship between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon is resonant and emotive: it makes my heart break just a little bit to think of them.
“Our lives have been full of nothing but betrayal. He was betrayed by me, me – or so I thought – by him, him by the Order…it has been a never-ending cycle."
Thanks again, can't wait for the rest... (oh glorious anticipation!)

How interesting... It's wonderful to see that your muse is at work again,
Shaindl
.
It also begs a lot of questions, though. The most important that comes to mind is, when did Yoda's vision occur? I'm guessing it was recent, or the Naboo wouldn't be in cahoots with the Jedi in setting up Qui-Gon's 'death.' It also implies that Amidala was aware of the scam - so does this mean Anakin would also feel betrayed as well?
