I will not forget that Ronald Reagan funded and equipped the Taliban and Osama bin-Ladin.

I will not forget that US conservative and neoliberal administrations alike funded and installed fascist and neofascist governments and revolutionary movements in Indonesia (but Suharto was anti-Communist, pleads the right-winger), Guatemala, El Salvador, Chile (Pinochet and his murderers were supposed to be on our side), and more. I will not forget that the CIA itself caused the Iranian revolution of 1979, by installing Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi (and killing his father) in 1952.

I will not forget that the domestic right wing in the US supported insurgent Falangist (fascist) General Francisco Franco in the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939, in which he overthrew a democratically elected government, and where Hitler gained new confidence in the unwillingness and inability of the West to act in response to the threat of fascism, not to mention where Hitler successfully tested new military equipment that would soon be used in his grab for world power for Germany. I will not forget that Franco was allowed to continue in power until his death in 1975, with Spain as a member of NATO.

I will not forget tacit US and UK collusion with the Holocaust, refusing to allow Jewish and other anti-Nazi refugees to enter the country. I will not forget the actions of the US State Department in trying to stop Varian Fry and his colleagues from saving over 4000 hunted refugees from death at Nazi hands. I will not forget the State Department's actions in shielding Nazi war criminals from justice after the war. I will not forget the general culpability of the post-war US, UK, French, German, Soviet, and even Israeli governments in helping Nazi criminals escape justice, escape notice, and begin new lives.

I will not forget the real reason Edward VIII abdicated. I will not forget that the British government still has not unsealed its most secret files on Deputy Fuhrer Rudolf Hess, despite the fact that Hess is dead, the war is over, the Soviet Union has fallen, and there is no perceivable security threat from the information contained. I will not forget that all available evidence points to the conclusion that Hess was murdered in Spandau Prison in 1987, by person or persons unknown.

I will not forget that George Bush was not elected.

I will not forget the right-wing pundits and politicians who used 9/11 as an excuse for neofascist security programs in violation of the Bill of Rights, who used 9/11 to justify labelling their political opposition as anti-American, who claimed opposing any right-wing policy was anti-American, again due to 9/11 and the wars that were launched in response, who used 9/11 to push their own political agendas, dicated by self interest and their financial supporters, who abused governmental powers (or powers illegally seized) to muzzle and harass those who opposed the war on Iraq.

I will not forget Senator Joseph McCarthy, or the House Un-American Activities Committee, nor the lives that were ruined, the careers ended, by their rabid anti-Communist, almost neofascist, fanaticism. Nor will I lose sight of the resemblance between the terms "Un-American" and "anti-American."

I will not forget the Kent State shootings. I will not forget the casualties in the unnecessary war in Vietnam. I will not forget the bombing of Cambodia. I will not forget My Lai.

I will not forget the tear gas and rubber bullets in Seattle (November 1999), Washington (April 16 2000), Philadelphia (R2K), Los Angeles (D2K), Genoa, and more.

On a happier note, yes, that is California- distance is always minutes, sometimes hours. grin That's not fair about the block party, though. I walk places when I have or make the time, and it's within my capabilities.

It is so very, very stupid, symbolic of a neurotic, setting sun world view, for the author of that spam email, to say that civilized people cannot understand evil people or their actions.
"The face of evil is you, Mr. McLeod, it is Alex, it is me."

Like it or not, in all normal human beings (those of us that are not perfect Buddhas yet), there is at least a minute capacity for evil. On the other hand, all beings are basically good, to start with, and in fact always, though possibly at some hidden level, at the deep dark end of some twisted chain of reasoning that rationalizes horrific acts. Few of those we deem "evil" actually believe that what they are doing is wrong or ambiguous.

To say that evil people belong to some other category we cannot at all understand, is stupid. It is the same as saying that they are not human beings. But they are- they have four-chambered hearts, two lungs, large brains that are mostly cerebrum, they are endothermic, they have opposable thumbs, they communicate via audible speech. Their brains work in the same way ours do. Their minds, on a fundamental level, are not so different from ours. What is different, is that they are neurotic- confused- absorbed in negative, destructive patterns, or warped, neurotic views. The negative energy and consequences of their views and actions, keeps in them in such a state.

The refusal to see "evil" people such as terrorists, as human beings, with motivations and thought patterns that can be understood and defeated, is a grave error, which stands in the way of victory against them. One must know the enemy, in order to defeat them. One must truly defeat the evil thoughts and energy occurring within them, and then one will find there is no one left to fight, for that is the true enemy, always.

"So it is said that if you know others and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know others but know yourself, you win one and lose one; if you do not know others and do not know yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle."
-Sun Tzu, The Art of War

One cannot destroy an idea, such as the ideas of Osama bin-Ladin, or Adolf Hitler, with a bomb, though their ideologues may be defeated at that particular time, which is in itself a worthwhile aim, if it is deliberately undertaken, knowing that the idea itself will remain. Ideas must be ultimately defeated on the same plane in which they originate- in the mind.

Also, on some level, the refusal to get down and dirty, to fathom the minds of those we consider the enemy, shows that we are not so much better than them, as we claim to be. Do they not, in similar ways, demonize us, write us off as unfathomable and unredeemable, and thus rationalize horrific terrorist acts, such as those committed on September 11th?

The one time the enemy truly cannot be understood, is if you are in the grip of neurotic views and patterns, and the one you perceive as an enemy, is a more enlightened warrior, a master of the Art of War.

Ahh I've missed getting my daily dose of Spam!! Always makse me grin

And here's an addition to your "Where do ya'll live" Spam:

You Live In Oregon If....

1. You say you are going "across the river" and expect everyone to know you're talking about going to Washington (across the Columbia for those of you who don't nkow your geography)

2. Your idea of a desert is less than 50 trees.

3. "Hot" is when the temperature hits 78 F

4. You don't know how to pump your own gas.

and sad to say - I don't know how to pump my own gas, we don't have self-serve stations in Oregon. If I ever move I'm in trouble. tongue

...I know how to eat an artichoke. Does that make me sophisticated? tongue

You mean people actually tell you how far something is in MILES? and not in time? I've never done that. When someone says "how far is it from here" I usually say "15-20 minutes" or however long it takes. And EVERYTHING is 20 minutes when you live where I live.

Life is like a box of chocolates - a cheap, thoughtless perfunctory gift that nobody ever asks for. Unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates.

So you’re stuck with this undefinable whipped mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down when there’s nothing else left to eat. Sure, once in awhile there’s a peanut-butter cup or an english toffee, but they’re gone too fast-the taste fleeting.

So you end up with nothing but broken bits filled with hardened jelly and teeth shattering nuts. You’re desperate enough to eat those, all you've got left is a is an empty box filled with useless brown paper wrappers.

Subject: Fun Facts ...

How many states can you see from the top of the Empire State Building?

On a clear day, you can see the surrounding countryside for distances up to 80 miles, looking into the neighboring states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Massachusetts, as well as New York itself! If it's a cloudy day, you can actually be ABOVE the clouds when standing at the top of the Empire State Building.

The observation deck is on the 102nd floor, but the clouds usually hang at about the 70th floor. If it's raining or snowing, you might actually see the precipitation falling "upside-down!" Wind has to go somewhere when it hits a building. It goes up, down, sideways, and ricochets off other buildings. Constantly shifting wind patterns around the Empire State Building can actually make snow appear to go up instead of come down.

Did a plane really crash into the Empire State Building?

Yes, it did. On July 28, 1945, an Army Air Force B-25 crashed into the Empire State Building between the 79th and 80th floors, causing one million dollars in damage and killing fourteen people. Sections of the aircraft were thrown as far as one quarter mile from the point of impact. The structural integrity of the building was not affected. The Empire State Building has also survived a fire. wink

In 1990 a tenant on the 51st floor who had a messy office filled with tons of paper and files caused a fire. He had all of his equipment plugged into one extension cord and the extension cord started smoldering and caught the papers on fire. The fire spread and created a minor inferno in the office. Fortunately, the fire was contained to that office, but did cause water damage to the floor below and adjoining offices.

Has anyone attempted to climb the Empire State Building from the outside or parachute off the top?

Yes, indeedy. French daredevil Alain Robert (known as "Spiderman") scaled the Empire State Building several years ago and was arrested upon reaching the top. In 1986 two amateur parachutists successfully jumped from the 86th floor observatory and were arrested upon landing. A few years before THAT, two people with backpacks (hiding parachutes) jumped off the 86th floor observatory, landed in the street, jumped into cabs and disappeared! Visitors to the Empire State Building with backpacks are now searched before entering.

What would happen if a penny was tossed from the top of the Empire State Building?

It won't hit the ground! Due to the shape of the Empire State Building and the wind current updraft created by the shape, coins tossed from upper floors are blown against the building's facade and land on the setback roof areas on the 81, 72, 30, 25, 21 or 6 floors. Hypothetically speaking, however, if the penny COULD reach the ground, it has been speculated that it would reach 175 mph (falling sideways so it has little wind resistance). That speed should make the penny powerful enough to drive it straight through the roof of a car! shock

Studies have shown, however, that coins tend to tumble as they fall and experience quite a bit of wind resistance. In THAT case, the penny would probably be harmless. The Empire State Building, by the way, is NOT the tallest building anymore. It used to be, but in 1972, the World Trade Tower took the title of "tallest." The Empire State Building is currently the SEVENTH tallest building in the world. The tallest is the Petronas Tower 1 in Malaysia followed by the Petronas Tower 2 in Malaysia. The Sears Tower in Chicago is the third tallest.

What is the original meaning of "decimate"?

We generally use the word "decimate" now to mean to obliterate or wipe out something altogether or to at least destroy MOST of something. The word originally meant to destroy ONE-TENTH of something. "Decimate" (from the Latin "decimus" or "tenth") originally referred to the random killing of every tenth person - a Roman military practice used to punish disobedient or mutinous legions.

What is the origin of the word "dunce"?

Poor John Duns Scotus! He hoped to go down in history as a wise scholar, but instead he gave us the word "dunce." John Duns Scotus was a thirteenth-century scholastic theologian. His teachings couldn't have been TOO lame, because he still had followers, called "Dunses" or "Dunsmen," as late as the sixteenth century. Unfortunately, the Dunses were laughed at by the sixteenth-century humanist scholars and religious reformers who felt the followers of Scotus were behind the times and resistant to the new learning. By the time the sixteenth century had drawn to a close, the word "dunce" had come to mean one opposed to learning or "a stupid person." tongue

What is the difference between "pathos" and "bathos"?

"Bathos" is a literary term to describe the unintentional interjection of hackneyed or trite language into an otherwise lofty context, evoking laughter or disgust in a failed attempt to create a grand effect. Writers don't aim for bathos on purpose. Pathos, in a work of art, is the quality that evokes sympathy or sorrow.

A man enters his favorite ritzy restaurant and, while sitting at his regular table, he notices a gorgeous woman sitting at a table nearby, all alone. He calls the waiter over and asks for their most expensive bottle of Merlot to be sent over to her-knowing that if she accepts it, she is his.

The waiter gets the bottle and quickly sends it over to the girl, saying this is from the gentleman. She looks at the wine and decides to send a note over to the man. The note read:

"For me to accept this bottle, you need to have a Mercedes in your garage, a million dollars in the bank and 7 inches in your pants."

The man, after reading this note, sends one of his own back to her and it read:

"Just so you know-I happen to have a Range Rover, BMW, and a Mercedes in my garage; plus I have over two million dollars in the bank: But, not even for as woman as beautiful as you, would I cut three inches off my penis! Just send the bottle back."

shock wink laugh

Subject: Attitude

Received this from a good friend and wanted to pass it on to you. It's worth reading.

Jerry is the kind of guy that some people love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"

He was a unique restaurant manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?" Jerry replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood. I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.

"Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested. "Yes it is," Jerry said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live life."

I reflected on what Jerry said. Soon thereafter, I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.

Several years later, I heard that Jerry did something you are never supposed to do in a restaurant business: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpoint by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe, hishand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination.

The robbers panicked and shot him. Luckily, Jerry was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local trauma center. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body. I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I'd be twins. Wanna see my scars?"

I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place. "the first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door," Jerry replied. "Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or I could choose to die. I chose to live."

"Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked. Jerry continued, "...The paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read 'he's a deadman'. I knew I needed to take action."

"What did you do?" I asked.

"Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me," said Jerry. "She asked if I was allergic to anything. 'Yes' I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Bullets!' Over their laughter, I told them, 'I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead'."

Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully. Attitude, after all, is everything.

You have two choices now:
1. Delete this.
2. Forward it to the people you care about.

Hope you will choose #2.
I did.

Subject: Five Great Lessons

FIVE GREAT LESSONS:
The Important Things Life Teaches You...

~ 1 ~ Most Important Question: During my second month of nursing school, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions, until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?" Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank.

Before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. "Absolutely," said the professor. "In your careers you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say 'hello'. "I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

~ 2 ~ Pickup in the Rain: One night, at 11:30 PM, an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rain storm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her - generally unheard of in those conflict filled 1960s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxi cab. She seemed to be in a big hurry! She wrote down his address, thanked him and drove away.

Seven days went by and a knock came on the man's door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached. It read: "Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes but my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband's bedside just before he passed away. God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others."
Sincerely, Mrs. Nat King Cole

~ 3 ~ Always remember those who serve: In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10 year old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. "How much is an ice cream sundae?"

"Fifty cents," replied the waitress. The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied a number of coins in it. "How much is a dish of plain ice cream?" he inquired. Some people were now waiting for a table and the waitress was a bit impatient. "Thirty-five cents," she said brusquely. The little boy again counted the coins. "I'll have the plain ice cream," he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and departed.

When the waitress came back, she began wiping down the table and then swallowed hard at what she saw. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies - her tip.

~ 4 ~ The Obstacle in Our Path: In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the big stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. On approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road.

After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. As the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many others never understand. Every obstacle presents anopportunity to improve one's condition.

~ 5 ~ Giving Blood: Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at Stanford Hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare and serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5 year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister.

I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes, I'll do it if it will save Liz." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheeks.
Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away?" Being young, the boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood.

Attitude, after all, is everything.

Work like you don't need the money.
Love like you've never been hurt.
Dance like nobody's watching.

Hello Ladies, I'm glad that you're enjoying it and I thought that I'd post some spam that was a little encouraging from time to time. Here's your "Daily Dose of Spam-Email" for Wednesday, September 24, 2003:

Subject: FW: My Friend!!!!
Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 14:19:14 -0700

"If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day, so I never have to live without you."
-- Winnie the Pooh

"A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out."

"Friendship is one mind in two bodies."
--- Mencius

"Friends are God's way of taking care of us."

"If you should die before me, ask if you could bring a friend."
---Stone Temple Pilots

"I'll lean on you and you lean on me and we'll be okay."
---Dave Matthews Band

"If all my friends were to jump off a bridge, I wouldn't jump with them, I'd be at the bottom to catch them"

"Everyone hears what you say. Friends listen to what you say. Best friends listen to what you don't say."

"We all take different paths in life, but no matter where we go, we take a little of each other everywhere"
--- Tim McGraw

"My father always used to say that when you die, if you've got five real friends, then you've had a great life."
---Lee Iacocca

"Hold a true friend with both your hands."
---Nigerian Proverb

"A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words."
---unknown

Pass this on to all of your FRIENDS, even if it means sending it to the person that sent it to you. And if you receive this email many times from many different people, it only means that you have many friends. And if you get it but once, do not be discouraged for you will know that you have AT LEAST ONE GOOD FRIEND.

Here's your "Daily Dose of Spam-Email" for Thrusday, September 25, 2003:

Subject: Live life
Date: Sat, 02 Jun 2001 19:01:17 -0000

There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them.

Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy.

Always put yourself in others' shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts the other person too.

The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Happiness lies ahead for those who cry, those who hurt, those who have searched, and those who tried...for only
they can appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives.

Love begins with a smile, grows with a kiss, and ends with a tear.

The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past, you can't go on well in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches. When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling.

Live your life so that when you die, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

Please send this message to those people who mean something to you, to those who have touched your life in one way or another, to those who make you smile when you really need it, to those that make you see the brighter side of things when you are really down and to those you want to tell how much their friendship/love is appreciated.

And if you don't, don't worry, nothing bad will happen to you; you will just miss out on the opportunity to brighten someone's day with this message.
love
