Welcome to the Seventh JC Hogwarts House Cup! A few things out of the way first.

I just found out about this game. Can I still play?
Yes. Pick a House that is not currently closed to new members and PM a House Prefect (listed below) telling them that you want to join their House. If they approve, they will PM me and I will harass a mod to do an IP check if they feel it necessary. If you clear, you will be given access to the House Ezboard and will be considered a member of that House.

How does this game work?
Below is a list of 113 Tasks. Each House has the job of completing as many of those Tasks as it can before the game ends. The Prefects are the only ones who can post completed Tasks in this thread for the completed Tasks to count. This is so that I don't go insane trying to figure out who is in which House when they post all their tasks... it's much easier to remember 4 people's names per House than 15 or 20. And also, the prefects need something to do. tongue

Can I become a Prefect?
No, they have already been chosen.

Must I have read all the Harry Potter books to play?
It’s recommended, but it’s not necessary. However, some knowledge, however rudimentary, of the Harry Potter world is a must. This is a Harry Potter game; don’t think you can play if you know nothing about Harry Potter.

If my House wins, can I get colors?
Yes, but only if you contribute at least 70 points to your House's total. The winning team will receive a week of colors and a title and they must use their House colors.
Also, the Head Boy or Girl will receive a title for the same time period as the winning House team. The Head Boy/Girl will be the member who contributed the most points worth of Tasks, and does not necessarily have to be from the winning House team. To determine who is Head Boy/Girl, authorship of Tasks must be indicated when they are posted by a prefect (at the end of the Task simply write 'By [username here]'). I will tally how many points each member contributed and announce the Head Boy/Girl at the same time that I will announce the winning team.

Who’s scoring?
I'm scoring. I'm going to follow tradition and use EXCEL on the final update so the only chance of mis-scoring will be if I type the wrong numbers in. You're free to keep your own EXCEL worksheet to check. I'm not knowingly trying to cheat you out of points and if you think I made a mistake, let me know. However, also know that some tasks won't get full credit if they're not done right (so read the criteria thing!).

Speaking of cheating, is it allowed?
NO! Any proven instance of cheating will result in an immediate loss of 200 points from the cheating House. (If you suspect cheating, PM me and I will discuss the matter with the prefects of the House suspected of cheating and I will make a decision on how to proceed based on the evidence presented to me.)

Can I switch Houses mid-game?
No.

Can I leave the game mid-game?
Yes, but you cannot rejoin a different House later. Simply PM the prefect and you will be taken off the House list. Prefects, if anyone leaves, post the fact in this thread.

What about a tie?
I highly doubt it will happen. If it does, we’ll worry about it then. Since there are an unlimited number of points possible, the tying Houses can always work extra hard near the end of the game to get more points.

Miscellanous Other Rules:
-No flaming other Houses. Period.
-Many of these Tasks' answers can fall into the realm of Fan Fiction. If you are a Fan Fiction writer and want to post any of your answers to these tasks as a fic on another site, you must wait until after the game is over to do so.
-Prefects: to post Tasks, write the category, then the Task, then the completed Task.
- Each week, a prefect from each House must post an update of the tasks completed by the House that week. It doesn’t need to be cumulative because this is just to show me that you’re working. wink The final list of completed tasks for your House must be posted by a Prefect before midnight the night of March 27 BST (or the morning of March 28, and that's Boards Standard Time aka Pacific Standard Time tongue ). This final list must be cumulative, since it will make it easier for me to tally points so the winner can be announced sooner. wink Also, it would make it easier for me to tally points if the tasks were posted in the order that they are on the task list. So basically, you could just take a copy of the task list and paste in all of your House's completed tasks and take out the tasks that haven't been done by the end. wink

Remember, though everyone is expected to complete tasks, to avoid confusion within the game thread, ONLY Prefects can post completed tasks for them to count. Also, every member must complete 70 points worth of tasks by the end of the game to be considered active and therefore eligible to receive colors if their House wins.

Task List version 7.0
Sections:
1. Books
2. Movies
3. Things to Come
4. Things that Were
5. House Pride
6. Humor
7. The Creative Spirit
8. The Artistic Spirit
9. The Literary Spirit
10. The Musical Spirit
11. The Quidditch Spirit

Basic Criteria for Awarding Points, Organized by Relevant Tasks
Book/Movie/Things to Come/Things that Were Tasks –
The point value on the Task generally tells you how much of an explanation to give. For example, a 15 point Task would require a longer answer (maybe a short paragraph) than a 5 or 10 point Task (one sentence (5 pts) to a few sentences (10 pts), though you can write a paragraph if you really want to tongue ). I have yet to award partial credit for these type of Tasks, but I may if I get a lot of really, really short or incomplete answers. If partial credit were awarded, only a few points would be taken off, depending on how complete the response was and how much the Task was worth in the first place. I won't take more than 3 or 4 points off of any given task, though.

Banners and Some Other Tasks that Require Photo Editing –
[Banners]
Backgrounds:
7 points for complex background
3 points for using a solid block of color for a background
Must include at least 1 picture relating to the topic of the banner:
7 points for 1 picture
5 for no specific HP-related images, but images are used
0 for no pictures (basically plain text on a block of color tongue )
Must use a quote from the Harry Potter books or movies OR the name of something OR part of a Sorting Hat poem about your House.
ie: Slytherin Quidditch
- If you don't use a quote according to the above criteria, I'll probably take 1 or 2 points off. However, if it's clever or relates somehow to your House, you'll probably get points. tongue
Total full points: 20
Total minimal points: ~12

[Icons]
Must use a House related image.
Must not be excessively blurry.
Total full points: 35
Total minimal points: 31

[Board Schemes]
Must use House related images.
Must not be overly simple – putting your House name on a fairly plain background as a main banner will not receive full credit.
Must use words: "JC (Your House name here) House – Year 7
Must include all images – adholders, banner, background, left banner, and curve
Total full points (Not including bonus): 150
Total minimal points (Not including bonus): 130

[Other Tasks that Require Photo-Editing]
Generally, you should follow the criteria above and ignore the parts that are Task-specific and/or pertain to specific point values. As far as losing points, I'll pretty much follow the banner guidelines for backgrounds and such, however, the rules won't really be as strict for this section since many of these are more creative than the banners (like the Got Milk? ad tongue ) so I'd concentrate more on that aspect when checking those.

[Very Secret Diaries]
Very Secret Diaries are supposed to be parodies, and therefore should be funny. The entries shouldn't be excessively short, but then, they don't necessarily have to be very long either. However, there should be some continuity between the diaries like there is in the originals. (For example, in the LoTR VSDs, Cassie Claire has connections between the diaries in jokes like "pervy hobbit fancier," "Sam will kill him if he tries anything," "Still not King," "Still the prettiest," and various references to stubble, carrots, and a pointy hat trick. tongue ) Other than that, just follow the guidelines in the Task itself. wink

[Day in the Life]
These are different from the VSDs in that they're about the random little details of a day in the life of one character (aka they should be funny)... Some serious stuff can be included, but overall, it should be funny. Example:
A Day in the Life of Harry Potter (this is a really spontaneous, lame example and I didn't do the whole day, but yeah...)
8:00AM – Woke up.
8:03AM – Remembered that I have to go to classes today,
8:04AM – Rolled over and went back to sleep.
8:13AM – What is that incessant knocking?
8:15AM – Stupid Hermione. I KNOW that it's after 8 AM. Just because she's up at 6AM every day doing extra homework...
8:16AM – Decide to get dressed, as do not wish to enter Great Hall in my pink teddy bear pajamas.
8:20AM – Dressed. Accidentally put hat on foot. Whoops.
8:21AM – Open door to go downstairs. Discover Hermione with her nose 3/4 of an inch away from said door. Give her weird look, but decide not to ask.
8:27AM – Almost get eaten by random giant hairball-type of thing. Run screaming toward the Great Hall.
8:29AM – Am informed that hairball is actually new DADA teacher. Why does no one tell me anything anymore?
8:33AM – Mmmm... food....

[Fanfic – General]
Rule of thumb for fanfic – the longer it is, the better. Also try to avoid Mary Sues like the plague if you have the opportunity to create a new character, and use correct English/punctuation (as well as you can anyways. And the spell checker was built into a lot of word processing-type programs for a reason tongue ).

If any of this criteria has not been met and there is still time before the Cup is over, I will notify you and you will have time to fix whatever doesn't meet the criteria and then get full credit. If the criteria are not met by the end of the Cup, then you will receive fewer points, but will still receive some points for doing the task. Some tasks have criteria posted as part of the task, but I tried to cover everything here except the Language Task since it has a massive list of stuff posted in it and a few criteria type things that have been in tasks for a while (such as icons having to be 50x50/60 pixels).

Head Boy/Girl Competition
Authorship of Tasks must be posted so that it may be determined who is the Head Boy or Girl. Simply add 'By [username here]' after each completed Task and I will add up how many points each member has contributed. The Head Boy or Girl will be announced at the same time as the winning House is, and this person will receive the title "Head Boy/Girl – House Cup, Year Six" (or whatever will fit in their title) for the week that the winning House has their colors. The Head Boy/Girl does not necessarily have to be from the winning house.

Repeat Tasks
If a non-repeatable task is done by more than one person, or if the limit on completed tasks is exceeded, then the first response/the number of the limit will be the amount of points counted into the House's total. However, each member will receive personal points toward the Head Boy/Girl competition for all tasks completed. Please don't abuse this to attempt to be Head Boy/Girl. If people do abuse this, I'll know since it will be pretty obvious and I'll make it so that repeat tasks/tasks over the limits won't count for anything at all. Non-repeatable tasks should not have repeats in the first place, but I will allow them without complaint as long as each separate response represents a different idea or viewpoint and you don't exceed 2 per task.

Posting Updates
The Head Prefect of each House should post the cumulative Final Task update unless they are not available, in which case another prefect should post them and make note of this fact. Any prefect can post the weekly updates, but please try to format them nicely so it takes me less time to add up points. If you put everything in the order it is on the Task List, or at least organized into categories, it helps everything go a lot faster for me. wink

o An audio sample of a House member saying something in this language. Translation must be posted along with this. Based on length and quality of sample (ie: how well the pronunciation guides given are followed, understandability). Bonus points from 25 – 40.
o A list of roots and prefixes worth 15 points
- Remember, your language must make sense. Don't just randomly create words; make a list of roots and prefixes that have specific meanings and form words from them... This will actually make the process easier for you. wink Vocabulary lists are expected to be over 200 words since you'll likely need more than that to write your literary works. This task is worth the most out of all the others by a long shot, and a lot of effort is expected to be put into this task if you attempt it.
Total task worth between 300 – 455 points.

The Artistic Spirit

Write a song sung by Celestina Warbeck or the Weird Sisters. Must be original, and may do up to 4. 40 points.
- 30 points bonus if recorded with vocals and some instrumentation and posted along with lyrics. Recording must be in MP3, WAV, or WMA format and easily downloadable. MP3 is preferable because of smaller file sizes.

Okay, I have a question reg. the Horoscopes task - do you want birth horoscopes, or "this is likely to happen to you this month because there are these and these transits" horoscopes?

(Yeah, astrology is one of my hobbies, why do you ask? tongue )

You could do either (I'm not too picky about that one), but it was originally written for the "this is likely to happen to you this month because there are these and these transits" type. wink

Okay, thanks!

And another question reg. this task:

Which minor character will become a major character in the 6th book? Why? May do up to 5 characters. 5 points.

What is your definition of "major character" (or "minor character")? Because that's up to interpretation, obviously. (e.g. some would say that Hagrid is a major character, but he's a side character compared to Harry, Ron, and Hermione)

minor - Neville before OOTP
major - Neville in OOTP

wink So basically, just use your own judgement about that one. It should be someone who's usually mentioned in passing or doesn't play a major part in the plot so far. wink

Ok, I'm going to get offline to get ready for my track meet, so if anyone has any other questions either post them here or PM and I'll answer them next time I get on (late tomorrow morning or afternoon). wink
