Saleem was the head of the Iraqi Governing Council, which was to take over power of Iraq in June.
Wanna make any bets that the U.S. is going to be staying a bit longer. It's kind of like Gilligan's Island isn't it? We started out on a three hour tour (or a three month war), and now we are there for god knows how long.
Of course, it is an election year so it wouldn't suprise me if Bush went on with withdrawing troops and personal leaving the Iraq nation in a shambles.

I wouldn't be suprised if the U.S. did it themselves so they could keep power in Iraq for a while longer.

I thought the US had their own military governer running the place anyway?

The U.S. does have a military governer. Saleem was to take the reins of power over Iraq from that U.S. governer. It was all part of a transition that might or might not come into affect in June. Who knows if it will happen that soon now that Saleem has been murcered.

"Saleem was the head of the Iraqi Governing Council, which was to take over power of Iraq in June."
Wrong. The Governing Council are the US-appointed administrators, not specifically the interim government that will take over on June 30. Additionally, the Council President has a rotating term, and Salim was due to give up his seat on June 1, so why would this have any impact at all on who takes over on June 30? The handover remains on schedule.
"I wouldn't be suprised if the U.S. did it themselves so they could keep power in Iraq for a while longer."
Pathetic, baseless, and ridiculous. You look really silly in your tinfoil hat.
"Saleem was to take the reins of power over Iraq from that U.S. governer."
Again, you're incredibly wrong.

Absolutely incorrect. Maybe certain people here are confused about the exact role of the council, I don't know.
As AYBABTU pointed out, the Governing Council existed to select the framework for the handover, not take over itself.
Saleem's time as chairman was a rotating one anyway. His successor, Ghazi al-Yawer has already filled his place.
If you want to research some specific people who will be taking over the government, look up Dr. Adnan Zurufi, among others.
These leaders are the ones selected for the actual handover.
For those who are confused, it breaks down like this:
1)Coalition occupying authority.
What Breemer is administrator is. Current caretaker of Iraq, until June 30.
2)Iraqi Governing Council.
Operates within the occupying authority, as part of the transition. Has the function of selecting members of the interim government. Saleem was a member of this.
3)Iraqi Interim Government.
This is the first body that will govern Iraq, independent of the US. Selected by the above council. This is what will take over June 30, and finalize the constitution, etc..
4)Permament Government.
Around Jan next year, popular elections will be held to determine the permament government.

There will not be elections in Iraq anytime soon.
Since 2/3rds of the population is Shiite the US fears that they will have another Iran on there hands very quickly.
The above comment about mister Othman being killed on purpose is absolutely correct. He is lucky he didn't wind up in one for the American prisons over there to be photographed naked and be sexually molested.

^ Yeah, I'm sure he'd rather have been in one of Saddaam's prisons.

Ah, so we can say that we treat people in detainment a tad better than Saddam, well that's certainly holding ourselves to a high standard!
In situations dealing with prisoners of war, at least we are not as bad as the worst!

Why do you people set yourselves up to be embarrassed? All that has to happen to utterly invalidate your assertions and prove that you're sadly clueless is for the handover to actually take place on June 30. If it does, your ludicrous accusations are exposed as the garbage that they are. Hell, I'm a gambler myself, but I don't bet on obvious losers.
As for elections happening in Iraq, after the handover of sovereignty on June 30 the US will have no role in determining how or when elections happen. You do know what sovereignty means, right

Or are you just being ironic, what with the drug-related name and the incoherent posts?

There will not be elections in Iraq anytime soon.
There was never meant to be "elections anytime soon."
The system is laid out above.
The June 30 handover was never an election. The interim government is made up of representives from the major groups within Iraq.
They will determine the framework for the election next year.
It's not really a difficult concept.
Another new nation used a similar process to determine the course of their country as well.
Maybe some people are familiar with the Continental Congress, as well as the later Constitutional Convention?

They don't teach that stuff in schools anymore. History doesn't start until the Emancipation Proclamation.

The so called United States Government has often tried what is know as "Nation Building". Would either of you two gentleman care to go into how successful that has been? Haiti, Vietnam, Afghanistan (whose Opium production is now higher than ever before thanks to the US occupation, hmmm?), and now Iraq.
As I said, one thing cannot and will not change. The Iraq population is 2/3rds Shiite, they will win any election that is ever had and immediately construct a governmental system identical to Iran and eventually merge with Iran. This will result in the US losing all it's oil which we all know they don't care about but believe me they do.
Look for the US to try to reinstall to power one of the descendants of the old king of Iraq and have him rule as long as possible, just like the puppet we have in Jordan who we even sent to Oxford to get educated.

Ah, I forgot.
I feel so stupid then, you know, by actually going out and researching the actual topic for myself.
It really makes it hard to throw out wild, unsupported claims that are based on my own opinion.

Mr.44,
You seem like an educated man, let me ask you a question.
What will happen to the Sunni's when we leave if the Shiite's are in power? Just your opinion.
